Well, looky here: Mike Pence wants to block public access to his emails

by rss@dailykos.com (Kerry Eleveld)
ThePrettiestOne

WHAT IS HE HIDING HE'S SO CORRUPT

After the Trump-Pence ticket exploited the issue of Hillary Clinton's emails at every turn, Mike Pence is working to block public access to the contents of his emails as governor of Indiana.

His lawyers are now fighting to deny disclosure of records showing how many taxpayer dollars he spent to hire outside attorneys to join an anti-immigration case. If Pence succeeds in keeping those records hidden from public view, it would set a precedent in which the judicial branch in Indiana sacrifices its ability to properly serve as a check on the state’s executive branch. Pence is clearly in favor of the executive having unfettered control without that check. Fatima Hussein writes:

"It comes down to this — the court is giving up its ability to check another branch of government, and that should worry people," said Gerry Lanosga, an Indiana University media professor specializing in public records law.

In the case, Indianapolis attorney William Groth is appealing a decision handed down by Marion Superior Court in April, which decided that redactions the administration made to a public record could not be second-guessed by the court.

The focal point in the case is a political “white paper” that had been excluded from Groth’s public records request.

Pence’s legal defense team claims the white paper is attorney work product protected by Indiana’s Access to Public Records Act — and at the end of the day, matters of public records are not for a court to decide.

A Message from Tammy

It’s November 9th, 2016 here in the United States of America, and our household stayed up late to try to sleep with the knowledge that Donald Trump is our next president.  I had already asked my assistant, Julie, who is even more shattered than my husband and me, to check to see what are the regulations for emigrating to Canada.  I had threatened to do so before, if I felt the election had gone badly awry, but money usually prohibited my doing so. But last night I swore I’d pull it off somehow, and persuade the Canadian government to take Tim, me, Julie, our two parakeets, and who knows how many rescued and stray cats into their saner nation.

This has been a long, hard day.  Little writing work has gotten done.  Mostly I have been numbing my brain with the simple iBook game I play or checking Facebook online or my e-mail to see how others are reacting.

A lot of my readers wanted to know what I thought when I came online this morning.  I already knew friends of LBGTQA sexuality and Islamic, Muslim, and Latino roots are very, very frightened, and we are frightened for them.  Many of those online who sought me out told me the steps they were taking for themselves, their friends, their relatives, classmates, and the organizations they believe in, and they asked me what I thought.  I had to reply in the voice of my books: that no, things don’t look good.  But we can’t let that get in the way.  They are doing the right thing, organizing and supporting each other, hanging onto their belief that they can work to make things better, that they don’t have to give in to things they believe are wrong.  What they see is not the end.  What they see is a battle, and their determination is what matters.

And I felt like a shmuck, because I realized I couldn’t talk to them like that, I couldn’t write my books like I want to, and then say blithely, “Okay, so long, I’m off to Canada!  `Bye!”  I can’t do it.  I can’t desert them; I can’t let them down; I can’t leave them in the middle of the fight.  So I told Julie not to bother checking into emigration to Canada.  She just grinned at me.

So I’m in for the fight.  Because Trump and the Republican Party and those who put them into office are not going to go after women’s hard-won rights over their bodies, and our Muslim and Latino and Black and Asian and Native American populations are not going to lose their rights as citizens of this country, and the people whose sexuality does not match the straight white straitjacket are not going to live in fear of beatings in the street without all of us who spent this morning as shattered citizens putting up one helluva fight.  We believe in forward motion, even if it’s across a battlefield.

Trump reportedly surprised at 'scope' of new presidential duties

by rss@dailykos.com (Hunter)

It turns out nobody on Trump's transition staff knows how presidential transitions work. Upon getting the White House tour last week they were alarmed to find out that yikes—they have to replace all those people themselves.

During their private White House meeting on Thursday, Mr. Obama walked his successor through the duties of running the country, and Mr. Trump seemed surprised by the scope, said people familiar with the meeting. Trump aides were described by those people as unaware that the entire presidential staff working in the West Wing had to be replaced at the end of Mr. Obama’s term.

After meeting with Mr. Trump, the only person to be elected president without having held a government or military position, Mr. Obama realized the Republican needs more guidance. He plans to spend more time with his successor than presidents typically do, people familiar with the matter said.

So Barack Obama will be spending "more time" with Trump's team in an effort to teach them the most basic aspects of running the nation. We should probably be grateful at the implication that Trump is willing to be taught such things by the "stupid" people in Washington, whose roles he insisted he could easily fill with his enormous gargantuan brain. But here's also a decent chance that Trump will see this report of his apparent incompetence and refuse to let Obama tutor him any further.

Because he's just that dumb. You know it, I know it, Obama knows it, and all the members of the press who have been covering him for the last year-and-a-half know it, too.

Young Grocery Shoppers Have No Idea Who This ‘Paul Newman’ Guy Is

by Laura Northrup
ThePrettiestOne

There's kids out there who haven't watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, or The Sting? That's a shame.

Paul Newman was a very famous movie star. This will seem obvious to readers above a certain age and fans of classic films, but it is apparently not that obvious to grocery shoppers. While you’d think that the late star’s Newman’s Own line of organic food that turns over profits to charity would be a hit with civic-minded foodies, that guy on the label may as well be Duncan Hines or Chef Boyardee to younger shoppers.

Well… maybe not that obscure, since many people don’t know whether those two men were real people or marketing department creations. Still, when Newman’s Own did some market research, the company discovered that relatively few younger shoppers knew that the company’s profits go to a charitable foundation.

In an article about the rebranding and ad initiative, the New York Times uses the “M” word: “millennials.” Suddenly, that makes sense: if you don’t know where the brand came from, it wouldn’t be obvious that it was started as a fundraiser.

Product packages now emphasize a banner that explains all profits go to charity, something that theoretically should please millennial do-gooders. They retain the drawing of a grinning Paul Newman, the same logo that the company has used since the ’80s.

Yet Newman’s Own isn’t used to advertising much at all. This ad campaign isn’t so much about the products themselves, but getting the message out about the company’s charitable mission. New TV spots for the brand discuss where the money raised goes, not necessarily the actual products.

This Grid Shows You How Long It Will Take to Retire, Based on Your Spending

Retire, right. Like I'm some kind of baby boomer...

Retirement is pretty far away for some of us. And it’s better to set smaller milestones for your savings now than to focus on the big, lump sum amount you’ll need to retire. However, it’s also interesting to look at the numbers, and this early retirement grid shows you how long it will take.

fun story time

queenelizabrooke:

This is at my school because we are v artsy and our walls are basically all paint and i am so proud to be at the school im at. So lady gaga posted it on instragram and we were v excited because lady gaga is queen. im not gonna lie, we’re a pretty liberal school and this was obviously salt at trump’s victory but honestly???

so right it went pretty viral and the superintendent calls our principal and is like ‘your sign is making a political statement take it down’ and like what??? do you want us to promote a culture of acceptance? because kids were terrified at my school on wed and still our. our gsa was in tears and that not even the worst of it.

do you want a sign that says ‘undocumented students there are walls…female students men can grab you…muslim students you are all isis…black students..all lives matter…mexican students you are all pretty sus so hand the drugs over…lgbtq+ we dont accept you’?

honestly the fact trump won means that these simple statements of acceptance are now ‘political statements’ and im disgusted. im fine if you voted for trump bc of his economic politics (even if i dont agree) or policy matters but this is a matter of respect and love for each other and the fact that respect is controversial is so disgusting

if i come back to school on monday and this is changed or painted over im going to be so disgusted at this world

thanks for your time-

there’s nothing wrong with drawing naked women but it’s a little odd that so many people and by people i mean men draw naked women and only naked women and spend years of their life experimenting with new art forms and finding thousands of new ways to create images of naked women

and by naked women i mean young, beautiful naked women. usually white, usually skinny.

like it’s cool that you spent years compiling this 3D crayon sculpture with only your feet but surely you could give her a dress or something. maybe you could have made an image of a man instead. or a child. or a nice tree.

man i want this to hit the tens of thousands so badly because it’s barely 1k and there’s already people missing the point and swearing at me in the notes imagine how much worse it’ll get it’ll be hilarious

Tangential but the men drawing naked women thing always reminds me of that John Berger quote, “You painted a naked woman because you enjoyed looking at her, put a mirror in her hand and you called the painting “Vanity,” thus morally condemning the woman whose nakedness you had depicted for you own pleasure.”

manicbucket:

bagelarms:

a lot of ppl seem confused on what cultural appropriation is so lemme break it down

IT IS NOT: enjoying food from another culture, enjoying music from another culture, learning about another culture, or learning another language

IT IS: using another culture as a costume, wearing religious articles as accessories when you are not a follower of that religion, using a race as a mascot, disrespecting religious or cultural practices.

I had Some Thoughts on this…

as a South Asian poc, my immigrant family has always loved and WILL always love:

1. cooking traditional food for you and watching you try it, pointing out which ones might be too spicy, laughing at the faces you make.

2. DRESSING YOU UP! especially anyone female-identifying. A sari is the most complicated garment ever and there is an art to dressing someone, my mom and aunties are so stinkin’ proud of themselves whenever they get the honour of wrapping and pleating any young woman’s First Sari.

You don’t need to be SA (south asian). Our hospitality treats a guest as an honorary family member. They’ll fawn over you, they’ll take pictures. You arms and neck will be laden with bangles and gold. You’ll smell like jasmine when you walk into a room because there will be fresh jasmine in your hair. Everyone will call you beautiful.

The difference is, WE will put the bindhi on your foreheard. Not you. (I mean this as nicely as possible: you did not get yourself here on your own.)

You are here because we INVITED you in to celebrate diversity with us and its delightful kaleidoscope of colours and flavours…

I am glad that we are now educating ourselves on cultural appropriation, but I hope it doesn’t stop you from accept such invitations. I hope fear of being “politically incorrect’ doesn’t turn into “fear of interaction.” If you’re so worried about the way you look “politically” then you miss the whole point.

Cultural appropriation is declining to interact with us as people, as friends. Failing to acknowledge us as families. And instead waltzing in to our homes to eat our food, wear our clothes, don our hairstyles and walk away without a backwards glance–claiming all the while that the moment we step out of the small privacy of our homes we must reject it all and conform to “Your World.”

A healthier diversity is acknowledging the shared space and boundaries between us. It is when you wait until you are invited in before you graciously accept. Its letting us place the bindhi for you. and its taking off your goddamn shoes before you step inside.

Kellyanne Conway to Trump critics: Be careful what you say

by rss@dailykos.com (Hunter)

That didn't take long. Not even a week has passed, and the president elect's team is already warning Trump critics to be "careful" about the way they criticize Trump.

[Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid] on Friday had said that "the election of Donald Trump has emboldened the forces of hate and bigotry in America" and that "white nationalists, Vladimir Putin and ISIS are celebrating Donald Trump's victory, while innocent, law-abiding Americans are wracked with fear." [...]

Then, she added: "He should be very careful about characterizing somebody in a legal sense. He thinks -- he thinks he's just being some kind of political pundit there, but I would say be very careful about the way you characterize it."

Donald Trump's minions seem to be confused about this, so let's fill them in on something they're going to need to know going forward: The President of the United States has the least legal protection against criticism or libel of anyone in the country. As the ultimate public figure, courts are obliged to grant public citizens wide leeway. This is why, for example, elected public officials, private citizens, and the Fox News channel have been repeatedly able to peddle 100% false information about Barack Obama for a decade with absolutely no repercussions.

To demonstrate how this works, I could, for example, say something like "President Donald Trump is a small-penised sex-obsessed pervert who stands accused of raping a 13 year old girl and who, given his temperament, has in all likelihood sexually abused at least one of his own children. He is mentally unstable and among the dumbest individuals ever to hold any public office anywhere, is quite probably colluding with Russia to undermine American interests, and spends his evenings aggressively masturbating to National Geographic footage of burrowing meerkats. His sole aim in acquiring the presidency is to convert the Lincoln Bedroom into a Rape Room, and he will sell an American nuclear weapon to ISIS for fifteen dollars and change if he thinks he'd make two dollars worth of profit on it."

Welcome to the big leagues, President Summer Squash. You're going to have quite the adventure from here on in.

where’s the interview w/ andy samberg where the interviewer asks about why there’s no jokes made around holt being gay and andy’s face twitches like “don’t do it.” and the interviewer goes on like “we live in such a weird PC culture though!” and andy laughs so uncomfortably i need it for science

The ironic thing is, there are plenty of jokes which involve him being gay. But it just doesn’t register as humor to those people if it’s not making fun of him for it, or using his sexuality as the actual punchline. A show actually respects its characters (for the most part) while still managing to provide top-notch humor and all a lot of people have to say is complaining about “pc culture”

here’s a link to the video if anyone’s interested

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idQsYQfkR5o

i don’t understand how anyone who’s watched the episodes where ray holt pretends to be a hetero would ever believe that there are “no jokes about him being gay.”

because that’s not the problem. the problem is that the jokes about him being gay are specifically for an lgbtq audience. they’re jokes that heteros don’t understand because for once, we’re not the punchline like we usually are. we’re not being made fun of in a way that tears us down. they’re jokes about the absurdity of our existence. of having to fake being straight, even though a lot of us are actually really bad at it, and having straight people actually believe you.

the other really great example is that one joke ray holt makes in the first season, about how the hardest thing about being a gay black police officer in the nypd is the discrimination. that joke was funny for so many reasons, and yet, not a single straight person really got it when i watched it with them. it feels like there are no jokes because the jokes aren’t intended for straight/homophobic people, where the punchline isn’t all about how they relate to us. it’s about how we relate to them for once, and that’s the greatest thing.

other show’s lgbt jokes are “loltranswomen” or “lol flamboyant gay men”

brooklyn nine nine’s lgbt jokes are “we got married as quickly as we could bc we were worried they’d repeal it” and then footage of Kevin and Raymond not letting the officient finish his sentence before they say “I do”
