just to clear up some things about pissgate

eroscestlavie:

grumpsaesthetics:

  • the golden shower bit is only a small part of a 35 page report that claims trump has close ties to russia
  • the report was done by a former british counter-intelligence official, with a long history of dealing with russia
  • this had nothing to do with the CIA
  • the former british agent was hired by a research and investigative firm in washington by none other than one of trump’s republican opponents in the primary campaign
  • however, by the time he began his research, the primary was over. the original client dropped out, but he was later hired by a new democratic client
  • by july he had collected a significant amount of material
  • the material was based on russian sources he deemed trustworthy, and unsurprisingly had nothing to do with 4chan (even if the alt-right neo nazi’s would like you to believe otherwise)
  • he delivered the report to his client, but also delivered a set to former colleagues in the FBI because of the gravity of it’s content
  • sometime this fall he asked the FBI for more information on the investigation, but he heard nothing back because instead of looking into the report, the FBI was obsessed with investigating clinton’s emails
  • so comey was well aware of the potential ties between trump and russian when he decided to fuck over clinton 11 days before the election by announcing they had found more emails
  • the british agent thought there might be a cover-up in progress
  • because of this he was persuaded to share the reports content with the washington editor of mother jones, who first reported on the existence of the report on the 31th of october [x] (this was before any of the 4chan posts were made)
  • sometime in october the report made it’s way to washington, and a summary of its content ended up in an highly classified intelligence report on russian interference that was delivered to both trump and obama in november
  • McCain got his hands on the report as well, and dispatch a trusted emissary, a former US official, to meet the source and find out more
  • on the 9th of December, McCain arranged a one-on-one meeting with comey and handed over documents given by the former british agent
  • McCain has later confirmed that the report published by buzzfeed was the same report he was in contact with [x]

sources: [x] [x] [x]

this is a great post but I really can’t believe that “just to clear up some things about pissgate” is a relevant phrase this week omfg

The Defenders Get Their Own Photo Shoot!

by Emily Asher-Perrin

The Defenders, group photo, Entertainment Weekly

The Defenders is due this this year, and with filming underway, it’s time to see the team all geared up together. Entertainment Weekly has the first set of photos with Matt Murdock, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Danny Rand!

Here are a few from the series, including the magazine upcoming cover. Everyone is basking in light the same color as their traditional uniform, it would seem, so we start with green:

The Defenders, Danny Rand, Entertainment Weekly

Then yellow!

Red! (Not quite buying the suit, though; is Matt Murdock even practicing law these days? He kinda gave up on… everything last season. Except Daredeviling. So. Maybe he should just be hanging out in comfy sweats?)

Purple! (Accompanied by a very poignant LIQUOR sign. Yes, we know Jessica has a problem, thanks for reminding us.)

This is a shot from episode two of the miniseries, and it’s hard not to be excited over the prospect of Misty Knight and Jessica meeting. Even if they argue. Especially if they argue?

And here is our crew hanging out on a taxi cab:

The Defenders, Entertainment Weekly cover

Just one thing, though… why is Jessica Jones doing “the butt pose” in both of two of the three promo photos? It doesn’t seem like the sort of thing Jessica would be excited about, and also stop with the butt pose. We’ve had this conversation before.

Head on over to Entertainment Weekly for more photos (including your first glimpse at Sigourney Weaver!)

Humans Are Literally Made of Stardust After All

by Rae Paoletta on Gizmodo, shared by Adam Clark Estes to io9

All too often, our flesh cocoons can feel like vessels of anxiety and existential dread. But take heart, because new research confirms what science popularizers like Carl Sagan have said all along: humans truly are made of “star stuff”—and we’ve got maps to prove it.

Man Breaks His Neck And Nearly Freezes To Death, But His Dog Saves His Life

by Elizabeth
ThePrettiestOne

Let's see, the boyfriend's cat would climb on top of me to take a nap, and Super ButtButt would stand in front of me and yell at me for being upset.

A Golden Retriever named Kelsey just saved his owner’s life after he slipped and fell, breaking his neck on New Year’s Eve. “I was screaming for help but my nearest neighbor is about a quarter mile away and it was 10:30 p.m., but my Kelsey came,” stated dog’s owner Bob. “By morning my voice was gone and I couldn’t yell for help, but Kelsey didn’t stop barking.”

The accident happened just 15 feet from Bob’s house. The man was in his long johns, slippers and a shirt as he just wanted to get a log for his fireplace. For the next 20 hours, Bob was laying paralyzed in the snow. The temperatures that night were as low as 24 degrees. Thankfully, Bob had his loyal doggie by his side.

“She kept barking for help but never left my side,” said Bob. “She kept me warm and alert. I knew I had to persevere through this and that it was my choice to stay alive.” After 19 hours, Bob lost his consciousness, but Kelsey didn’t give up. “She was letting out this screeching howl that alerted my neighbor. He found me at 6:30 p.m. on New Year’s Day.”

The man was immediately taken to a hospital where he has undergone a surgery. Bob is on his way to recovery and says his dog is a “hero” to whom the man will be forever grateful to for saving his life.

Republicans threaten to subpoena ethics director for daring to criticize Trump

by rss@dailykos.com (Mark Sumner)

Following Donald Trump’s flaming circus tent/press conference at which he announced his boys would be keeping his chair warm at the company he would continue to own and continue to profit from while he was gilding the White House, the head of the government ethics office had a few comments.

The idea of limiting direct communication about the business is wholly inadequate. That’s not how a blind trust works. …

the plan does not comport with the tradition of our Presidents over the past 40 years. This isn’t the way the Presidency has worked since Congress passed the Ethics in Government Act in 1978 in the immediate aftermath of the Watergate scandal.

But in the era of Donald Trump, you don’t criticize the president for a failure of ethics. You criticize the ethics office for not praising Trump.

House Republicans have found a subject for their opening review of conflicts of interest under Donald Trump: the federal official in charge of investigating conflicts of interest.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, the head of the House Oversight Committee, criticized the director of the federal Office of Government Ethics on Thursday over his criticism of Donald Trump’s plan to address conflicts of interest. And he threatened to subpoena the official, Walter Shaub, if he refuses to participate in an official interview.

That’s right. The way they plan to resolve any issue around Trump’s conflict of interest is by eliminating anyone who brings it up.

finjico: This Is Not OK Disclaimer: We would not normally use...

finjico:

This Is Not OK

Disclaimer: We would not normally use any part of our entertainment company to make a political statement, but we do not believe these are normal times. And a part of us is wondering if dividing these things was ever the right choice. Even if you are a registered republican we hope that you will take the time to consider this statement.

We are deeply disturbed by the events of the last few days. Nothing like this has ever happened in our lifetimes, nor our parents’ lifetimes. We are scared, and sad, and angry.

For example, the incoming President-Elect just held a press conference that was attended by as many applauding and paid staff (Business Insider) as it was actual press. The Russian Law Firm of the Year (Fortune) took over halfway through, and filled a table with folders of blank paper (The Independent) in lieu of an actual ethics review (Washington Post). The President-Elect refused to divest their business interests (Vanity Fair), and laid out a plan to launder foreign bribes through the state department (LA Times) instead.

That was just yesterday. This is not OK.

At 1am this morning, after enacting certain procedures that allow parties to pass votes without a supermajority, and the House banning the Congressional Budget Office from investigating the real costs (Salon) of these changes, the Senate voted 51-48 in favor of repealing Affordable Care Act protections (Wall Street Journal) for pre-existing conditions, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, keeping kids on their parents insurance until age 26, and contraceptive access for women. While this was “just” a procedural measure, and does not yet affect the law, it bodes poorly for the millions of US citizens, including our company, our collaborators, our friends, and our family, that have come to rely on these rights. Rights acknowledged by every industrialized nation in the world except the United States, who still lags in quality of care, access to care, and cost of care.

This is not OK.

America is a plural democratic republic - the only one in the world. We are unique in some ways. We have some unique challenges. We have some unique struggles. We have a plurality of perspectives. Finji’s co-founders grew up in rural Michigan, in tiny towns, but we also lived in some big cities. We’ve seen a lot of things and known a lot of different brilliant folks from all walks of life. We respect a healthy debate, and understand that compromise is not just a necessary reality but the way progress happens.

But what we’re seeing now is not that. This is not compromise. An unpopular President-Elect is about to take office and preside over a single-party government that has no concern for the health and welfare of their constituents. A party that just demonstrated they unequivocally value tax cuts for the hyper-rich over the survival of the poor. A party that came to and maintains power through abusing the Voting Rights Act, gerrymandering districts into oblivion, legislating against incoming lawmakers, and leveraging the slave-state-favoring power of the Electoral College. By establishing a majority in all three branches of government, they now have the power to legislate without opposition.

This is not OK.

The last 48 hours have shown what they intend to do with their power, and that they’re capable of following through. Our official statement is below. Please consider though that we understand that there are nuances and subtlety to governance that are hard to address in a single press release. We have serious problems ourselves with the Affordable Care Act. We understand that corruption is widespread in both parties, and that much of the harm that has come to pass this week is directly attributable to the passivity, weakness, and greed of the Democratic Party. We acknowledge all these things, but still feel it is important to make this statement:

We condemn the actions of this new government.

We condemn the actions of the President-Elect.

We condemn the President-Elect’s cabinet appointments.

We question the legitimacy of the methods by which they have gained control of our former democratic republic.

Thank you and good luck.

Note: some folks have rightly expressed concern with Finji being both a company and publicly expressing a “political opinion.” It may surprise the reader to discover that we too believe that it is wrong for business and politics to mix. Unfortunately, that is the status quo in the US. We ardently hope for a time when we do not have to speak up, but as it stands, this post is a grain of sand next to millions of dollars in deeply corrupt lobbying and campaign finance and billions of dollars in government subsidies to factory farms, fossil fuel megacorporations, and other industries. This post is next to nothing, but we will still be proud to delete it when it is no longer necessary.

Honestly I agree with the theory that Kyle’s birth name is Ben Organa and that Han took Leia’s last name but I disagree that it’s just because Alderaan is matriarchal, like, A. you’d better believe Han would’ve taken Leia’s last name no matter how patriarchal her culture was, and 2. Solo is the name of a notorious criminal with all sorts of bounties on his head, but Organa is a name associated with royalty, meaning Han could show up in sweatpants at any restaurant in the republic and get a table for Han and Chewie Organa without a reservation

Every human being inherently deserves safe food, clean water, and adequate medical care.

The greatest moral failure of capitalism is that it turned these necessities into commodities.

The greatest moral failure of capitalists is finding ways to justify withholding what we need to live while it is in abundance for the sake of profit.

Every human being inherently deserves safe food, clean water, and adequate medical care.

Excuse me maybe it’s just cultural different or the environment I grew up in but I think everyone from 18 to 65 MUST work to have food and water and lodging and medical care (except those who are disabled or unable to work because of their health)? And they must pay tax so their children can go to school for free and they themselves are taken care of when they retire?

I’m not talking about economic crisis when hundreds of people compete for a job, I’m talking about when there’re jobs out there and this healthy 30-year-old person just sits all day at home, then no one owe them food or water or anything.

Consider: A persons inability or unwillingness to produce an arbitrary amount of profit for corporations with their labor should not dictate whether they live or die.

Like, maybe it can dictate whether or not they can buy a new iphone or a macbook.

But WATER? Water shouldn’t be withheld from people because of their economic output.

I think everyone from 18 to 65 MUST work to have food and water and lodging and medical care (except those who are disabled or unable to work because of their health)

As I have said, if a person is unable to work, then they do not have to work. But if if they are UNWILLING to work (like they are lazy) then how can they expect to have food for free???

Because not fucking starving to death in a community with an abundance of food is a human right?

Even when they are able to but still refuse to work?

ITS A HUMAN RIGHT. So, YES.

hu·man right noun

  1. a right that is believed to belong justifiably to every person.

In fact, Article 25 of the UN’s Universal declaration of Human Rights reads “ (1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.
(2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.”

So yes. You don’t revoke a person’s human rights because they don’t have a job.
