Το SolEol είναι μια εφαρμογή που είχαμε ξαναδεί στο παρελθόν αλλά καλό είναι να ξαναγράψουμε για αυτήν μιας και μπορεί να διαφεύγει από αρκετό κόσμο .

Πρόκειται για μια εφαρμογή που αυτοματοποιεί την διαδικασία αναζήτησης υπότιτλων .

Απλά κάνεις ένα drag n drop το αρχείο ή ακόμη και το folder που θέλεις στην εφαρμογή και αυτή αναλαμβάνει να σου βρει τους υπότιτλους .

Τόσο απλά. Πολλές φορές εάν όχι πάντα, τα αποτελέσματα είναι σωστά.

The delete key on a Mac keyboard functions like a backspace key on a Windows/PC keyboard, deleting a character a time backwards from where the cursor is located. Pretty straightforward, but many newcomers to the Mac platform are confused as to why there isn’t a forward delete key… well it turns out there is forward delete and it’s actually the same button, flipped to remove characters forward by holding a modifier key. While super easy to use, we’ll also show you how to add a physical forward DEL button which won’t require the modifier key, and we’ll also cover a couple extra common Mac delete key functions too.

Forward Delete in Mac OS X, like the Windows “DEL” Key

• Hold down the “fn” (function) key then press the “delete” key

Relatively unknown to many OS X users, this ranks among the most commonly asked questions for Windows & PC converts that have come to the Mac platform.

If you’d rather not use a modifier shortcut and would prefer a dedicated forward delete key on the Mac, you can use a free tool to remap the seldom used Power button on Mac keyboards to function as a PC style DEL button.

Remap the Power Key to Become a Delete Key

Rather have a physical DEL key? A free third party utility called “PowerKey” lets you reassign the Power key on Macs to function as a forward delete button, just like how the DEL key works in the PC world. Technically PowerKey has other options and can remap the key to perform other functions too, but the Delete option is the most relevant to our needs here.

Uncompress the folder, open the “Release” directory as the other folders contain source code, then right-click on the Powerkey.app and choose “Open” to get around the Gatekeeper ‘unidentified developer’ limitation (assuming it’s enabled to be restrictive). Choose to run at login or in the background, and enjoy your new forward delete key. The power functions are still accessible either by holding down the power key to shut down the Mac without warning, or by hitting Function+Power to access the power options menu for sleep, restart, and shut down as would be normally summoned by just tapping the key itself.

While we’re on the topic of delete functions, let’s cover two other helpful tricks:

Delete Entire Words

• Press and hold the Option key while hitting the Delete key

Delete an Entire Line of Text

• Press and hold the Command while hitting the Delete key

These two functions will work in just about every Mac OS X app, whether it’s a word processor, text editor, browser, terminal, or whatever else you’re using. Take the time to memorize all these simple delete functions and your workflow is sure to improve.

Optionally: Use a Full-Sized Apple Keyboard for a Physical DEL Key

Though this won’t be applicable to all users, if you’d rather not remap a key or use a special function to forward DEL, you can always use a full sized Apple keyboard instead. The full sized keyboards feature the “DEL” button along with page up/page down, and many other buttons that are not present on the Apple Wireless Keyboard or the MacBook keyboards.

Volkswagen is taking iPhone compatibility to new level, with plans to unveil next week the iBeetle, a version of its iconic brand with a built-in docking station and specialized app.

We've received direct word and noted on Twitter that that Mike Culbert, a longtime Apple hardware engineer, has passed away after battling cancer. According to his friends, he was a "brilliant engineer, a wonderful human being." He will be missed.

Culbert began working at Apple over 25 years ago, ending up as VP of Architecture. His contributions include numerous patents for many iPhone and iPad innovations, we now take for granted. These include iOS video screen rotation, power saving patents, the ambient light sensor, digital content escrow for iTunes purchases, and more. He was also a key player on the Newton development team.

Many older Macs lost out on the ability to run OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3!), but some hard working fellows have created a free third party tool called MLPostFactor that allows for the newest version of OS X to be installed on older, officially unsupported Macs. The process used to be quite complicated, but with MLPostFactor it’s easier than ever and can now be done by creating a partition, running the MLPF app, installing OS X as usual, then using the MLPostFactor app again to patch the ‘failed’ installation. Reboot and automagically OS X Mountain Lion will be running on the older Macs, breathing new life into older hardware.

This makes for an excellent weekend project, and if you’re interested in trying this out yourself, review the compatible older Mac list to see if the machine you want to install is supported.

MLPostFactor Compatible Macs

• Mac released from 2006 to 2008 with Core 2 Duo CPU and Lion installed – PPC, Core Duo, and Core Solo chips are not supported
• MacBook late 2006, 2007, and 2008
• MacBook Air, mid 2007
• MacBook Pro late 2007 and mid 2007
• iMac 2006
• Mac Mini 2006
• Mac Pro 2006, 2007
• Xserve 2006, and early 2008

The requirements are basically such that if it supports Lion, it will now support Mountain Lion. Do note that some of the older Mac Pro and Xserve models have specific GPU requirements as well, so be sure to read the full MLPostFactor tutorial before beginning in order to determine if there is anything incompatible with the specific Mac model you are looking to install this on.

If you meet the requirements, you’ll need to download the MLPostFactor app (link here), re-download Mountain Lion from the App Store, and, ideally, create a installer drive as if you were going to perform a clean install on a regular compatible Mac.

If your older Mac doesn’t fit the compatibility list, don’t feel too bad, but try out some tips to speed it up instead to breathe some new life into it. It won’t be running a new OS, but at least it’ll be a bit quicker.

Ο ήχος των μηχανών ακούγεται και πάλι στο εργοστάσιο υποδημάτων των αδελφών Τσακίρη, στο Παλατάκι. Το 100% χειροποίητο, ελληνικό παπούτσι ξαναβρίσκει τη θέση του στα ράφια του πρατηρίου του εργοστασίου, αλλά και των καταστηματαρχών που γνωρίζουν καλά την αξία της φίρμας, η οποία μέχρι το 2004 εφοδίαζε με την παραγωγή της πολλά μαγαζιά σε όλη την Ελλάδα, αλλά και στο εξωτερικό. Το πρόσωπο του κ. Θοδωρή, που από 14 χρονών ράβει παπούτσια, λάμπει από χαρά μπροστά στον πάγκο με τη μηχανή του. 

Ο κ. Σταύρος Τσακίρης, εκ των ιδιοκτητών τής επιχείρησης, φωτογραφίζεται με τον κ. Θοδωρή, που εργάζεται στον τομέα του παπουτσιού εδώ και 50 χρόνια!

Το Χαϊδάρι μέχρι τη δεκαετία του ΄80 θα μπορούσε να χαρακτηριστεί "πρωτεύουσα του παπουτσιού". Ίσως είναι άγνωστο στους νεότερους ότι πολλές βιοτεχνίες και βιομηχανίες κατασκεύαζαν εδώ παπούτσια, συντηρώντας εκατοντάδες θέσεις εξειδικευμένης εργασίας, πετυχαίνοντας μάλιστα και καλές εξαγωγές στην Ευρώπη και την Αμερική. Όμως στη δεκαετία του '90 έπεσε η λαίλαπα της αποβιομηχάνισης, ενώ την ταφόπλακα έριξε το "σκληρό" ευρώ, που έκανε ακριβές τις εξαγωγές και φτηνές τις εισαγωγές. Οι μηχανές στους χώρους παραγωγής σίγησαν και οι εργάτες βρέθηκαν χωρίς δουλειά. Όμως η σημερινή κατάσταση της οικονομίας οδηγεί, δειλά έστω, σε αντιστροφή της πορείας.
Μάς ξεναγεί στο εργοστάσιο "Ι. Τσακίρης ΑΕΒΕ" ο κ. Σταύρος Τσακίρης, ένας από τους ιδιοκτήτες της επιχείρησης, και μάς μιλάει για το "ξύπνημα" της παραγωγής, τις επιχειρηματικές δυσκολίες, αλλά και τις μελλοντικές προοπτικές.

Επιτέλους! Καλοδουλεμένα παπούτσια με ελληνικό σηματάκι, στις προθήκες του πρατηρίου του "Τσακίρη" στο Παλατάκι.

"Ξεκινήσαμε και πάλι μετά από 8 χρόνια, τον Αύγουστο του 2012. Ο βασικός εξοπλισμός υπήρχε, όπως και οι εξειδικευμένοι εργάτες, τους οποίους αναζητήσαμε μόλις πήραμε την απόφαση να βάλουμε μπρος", σημειώνει ο κ. Τσακίρης περπατώντας με εμφανή ικανοποίηση στον χώρο παραγωγής, ανάμεσα σε δέρματα, σόλες και γαζωτικές μηχανές. Σε πρώτη φάση,"άνοιξαν" 10 θέσεις εξειδικευμένου προσωπικού, με γνώση του αντικειμένου από παλιά -και έπεται συνέχεια.

Βέβαια η κατάσταση δεν είναι ίδια με τη "χρυσή εποχή" του ελληνικού παπουτσιού, όταν όλη αλυσίδα παραγωγής τροφοδοτούνταν από ελληνικές επιχειρήσεις, ήταν δηλαδή εγχώριας παραγωγής τα δέρματα, οι σόλες, οι φόδρες... Τώρα οι πρώτες ύλες έρχονται αναγκαστικά από την Ιταλία και μένει μέγα ζητούμενο η ανασύσταση όλου αυτού του μηχανισμού, που θα μπορούσε να ξαναζωντανέψει χιλιάδες θέσεις εργασίας.

Όλα τα υποδήματα είναι χειροποίητα..

Εδώ και μερικούς μήνες, λοιπόν, η "Ι. Τσακίρης ΑΕΒΕ" παράγει ένα μέρος από τα παπούτσια που εμπορεύεται. Συγκεκριμένα κατασκευάζει αντρικά και γυναικεία μοκασίνια, καθώς και γυναικεία πέδιλα, όλα εξαιρετικής ποιότητας και σε σχέδια by Tsakiris, εμπνευσμένα από τις διεθνής τάσεις της μόδας. Τι ώθησε την εταιρεία σ' αυτή την κατεύθυνση; Παίζει ρόλο η κρίση; Ο κ. Σ. Τσακίρης απαντά: "Η απόφασή μας συνδέεται ασφαλώς με την γενικότερη οικονομική κατάσταση και κυρίως με την έλλειψη χρηματοδότησης από τις τράπεζες. Αυτό καθιστά πια πολύ δύσκολες τις εισαγωγές. Από την άλλη όμως, έχουμε τον πλήρη έλεγχο τής ποιότητας του παραγόμενου προϊόντος!".

Νέα προϊόντα, ελληνικής σχεδίασης και παραγωγής.

Η επιχείρηση σχεδιάζει την επέκταση της παραγωγής και σε άλλους τύπους δερμάτινων υποδημάτων,  που θα προκαλέσει αύξηση των θέσεων εργασίας. Ρωτάμε τον κ. Τσακίρη αν προσπαθεί η εταιρεία του να προχωρήσει και σε εξαγωγές. "Κάποτε η υποδηματοποιία ήταν κατεξοχήν εξαγωγικός κλάδος της ελληνικής βιομηχανίας", μάς απαντά, και συνεχίζει: "Έχουμε ήδη στείλει δείγματα στο εξωτερικό (Γαλλία) και φιλοδοξούμε να ξαναζωντανέψουμε έναν κορυφαίο κλάδο για την Ελλάδα και την πόλη μας, ωστόσο χρειαζόμαστε τη βοήθεια της Πολιτείας -ή τουλάχιστον να μην μπαίνει εμπόδιο".

Τι χρειάζεται για να γίνει η ο κλάδος του παπουτσιού και πάλι ανταγωνιστικός διεθνώς; "Οι υπουργοί στηρίζουν τα πάντα στη μείωση του μεροκάματου, ενώ δεν είναι αυτό το βασικό για την ανταγωνιστικότητα, υποστηρίζει ο συνομιλητής μας, τη στιγμή που υπάρχουν τόσα άλλα σοβαρά αντικίνητρα και εμπόδια. Ενδεικτικά, έχουμε ανάγκη από χαμηλότοκα δάνεια για να αγοράσουμε νέο μηχανολογικό εξοπλισμό, ώστε να προχωρήσουμε μερικά βήματα πιο μακριά. Παράλληλα, την ανταγωνιστικότητά μας τραυματίζει το ίδιο το κράτος με τον υψηλό ΦΠΑ που πλήττει την εσωτερική ζήτηση, την υπερβολική φορολογία, τις απαγορευτικές ασφαλιστικές εισφορές, το ακριβό ρεύμα, τα υπέρογκα δημοτικά τέλη (εμείς πληρώνουμε στο Δήμο 1.000 το μήνα!). Αυτά, για παράδειγμα, δεν τα έχει στον ίδιο βαθμό η Πορτογαλία και πετυχαίνει καλές εξαγωγικές επιδόσεις στο υπόδημα".






Από την παραγωγή στην κατανάλωση λοιπόν!

Να θυμίσουμε πως στην πόλη μας λειτουργεί μεγάλο πρατήριο της εταιρείας (πίσω από το Παλατάκι), όπου μπορείτε να βρείτε  υποδήματα τελευταίας σεζόν και outlet και φυσικά τα νέα δικά τους χειροποίητα ελληνικά παπούτσια!

Business networking site LinkedIn continues its push toward an encompassing connected product tailored to professionals with its newest mobile offerings, which brings a news stream and redesigned look that directs users to content-driven features.

Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities expects Apple's fifth-generation iPad to be substantially smaller than the current model, while still managing to carry a GF2 touch panel, A7X processor and other improvements over its predecessor.

Throughout your career you'll need to negotiate important matters, such as your salary and work benefits.

New research is saying you'll have a better chance of getting what you want if you negotiate through a virtual medium.

Michael Taylor, a Ph. D student at Imperial College London, led a study examining negotiation strategies and concluded that face-to-face interactions tend to benefit the more powerful person, whereas the ones with less power fared better in virtual negotiations.

In the first part of the study — recently presented at the Annual Conference of the British Psychological Society — 74 people paired up to take part in a "two-sided negotiation in which one party had more power than the other."

A second part of the study was conducted with 63 people who took part in "a three-sided negotiation where they were playing the part of people at different levels in a hierarchy."

Taylor and his team of researchers found that people with less power performed better in both parts of the study when negotiating virtually, and it didn't matter how many people were involved in the interaction.

"When people negotiate from farther apart, it affects their whole way of thinking. This can mean the contextual details of the negotiations, such as power hierarchies, have less impact on the outcome," Taylor said at the conference. "This has implications for team negotiation and shared decision-making in the workplace."

Basically, the more powerful you are, the more you'll get out of in-person meetings. This could also possibly be the reason why employees won't speak up in meetings with their bosses or why brainstorming sessions result in a list full of ideas from only the leader.

Phone conversations were not mentioned in the research.

Το Ελληνικό αρχιτεκτονικό γραφείο Fluid Architects και το Βρετανικό Pringle Brandon Perkins + Will συνεργάστηκαν για το σχεδιασμό των κεντρικών γραφείων της Google στην Αθήνα. Ακολουθώντας το πρόγραμμα σχεδιασμού που ζητούσε έναν οικιακό βιομηχανικό χώρο, που να αντικατοπτρίζει τις τοπικές αξίες και παραδόσεις της πόλης, από τα 550m² χώρων γραφείων στο Μαρούσι κρατήθηκε μόνο ο δομικός σκελετός και ο σχεδιασμός βασίστηκε στην ιδέα της "Οικίας μακριά από την Οικία".
Με την άφιξή του στα γραφεία, ο επισκέπτης αντιλαμβάνεται άμεσα αυτή την ιδέα, μπαίνοντας στο βιομηχανικό χώρο με οροφές εμφανούς σκυροδέματος, μηχανικούς αγωγούς, κρεμαστά φωτιστικά και πατώματα από τσιμεντοκονία. Αντί για υπάλληλο υποδοχής, ένα μέλος της ομάδας της Google τον καλωσορίζει σε μια "περιοχή παιχνιδιού" με τραπέζια μπιλιάρδου κι ένα κεντρικό τραπέζι πινγκ πονγκ, όπου λαμβάνουν χώρα ομαδικοί αγώνες μεταξύ των μελών, με τους θεατές να παρακολουθούν από την απέναντι πλευρά καθισμένοι σε πεζούλες από ξύλινα καφάσια. Ένας τοίχος επενδεδυμένος με μοριοσανίδες και καλυμμένος από ξύλινες κορνίζες με οικογενειακές φωτογραφίες των μελών, περιβάλλει τον χώρο υποδοχής και τις αίθουσες σύσκεψης από πίσω. Ακολουθώντας τον τοίχο, ο επισκέπτης οδηγείται στον διάδρομο της αίθουσας συσκέψεων, φωτισμένο από τα βιομηχανικά κρεμαστά φωτιστικά, που εδώ έχουν εφαρμοστεί στους τοίχους.  
Ο φυσικός φωτισμός και οι λειτουργίες κατεύθυναν την σχεδιαστική χωροθέτηση, έχοντας ως αποτέλεσμα αίθουσες συσκέψεως ποικίλων μεγεθών και μία μεγαλύτερη αίθουσα για εκδηλώσεις και πάρτι, η οποία ανοίγει προς την κουζινούλα με φαρδιά δίφυλλη πόρτα, στο πίσω μέρος του γραφείου όπου το απευθείας ηλιόφως φιλτράρεται από τα γειτονικά κτήρια. Ο συνδυασμός βιομηχανικής και τοπικής αίσθησης είναι εμφανής στις αίθουσες αυτές, με οροφές εμφανούς σκυροδέματος και βιομηχανικά φωτιστικά στους τοίχους, δίπλα σε μεγεθυμένες αφίσες παλιού Ελληνικού κινηματογράφου. 
Ο τεχνητός φωτισμός πραγματοποιείται κυρίως από γραμμικά φωτιστικά σώματα με κατά παραγγελία κρεμαστά φωτιστικά -"κλουβιά" στα 4 βασικά χρώματα της Google. Για τη μείωση αντηχήσεων στις αίθουσες συσκέψεως, έχουν κρεμαστεί ηχοαπορροφητικά πανέλα από τις οροφές εμφανούς σκυροδέματος και έχουν τοποθετηθεί τάπητες σε διάταξη μωσαϊκού. 
Η βιομηχανική αίσθηση του χώρου είναι περισσότερη εμφανής στον ενοποιημένο χώρο με 24 θέσεις προσωπικού και το γραφείο διεύθυνσης από μονό υαλοπέτασμα. Διάφορα ανεπίσημα καθιστικά προσφέρουν ιδιωτικούς ή ομαδικούς χώρους εργασίας στα μέλη, ενώ τοίχοι με μαγνητικές επιφάνειες ή μαυροπίνακες για τις παρουσιάσεις, τοποθετήθηκαν προσεχτικά τριγύρω για να συμπληρώσουν το εργασιακό περιβάλλον. Ο ενοποιημένος χώρος διασπάται από χαμηλά καθίσματα πίσω από ευέλικτους χάρτινους τοίχους που προσφέρουν σχετική ιδιωτικότητα και μετακινούνται ώστε να χωρέσουν μικρές ή μεγαλύτερες ομάδες εργασίας, και από ψηλότερα σκαμπό για τα πλεονάζοντα μέλη, στο τραπέζι της περιοχής «προσγείωσης» όπου παίζονται και επιτραπέζια παιχνίδια. Ένας εγγράψιμης επιφάνειας τοίχος χωρίζει την περιοχή αυτή από τον χώρο εκτύπωσης/αντιγραφής, με βιομηχανικά πλαστικά κουτιά αποθήκευσης γραφικής ύλης και φυλλαδίων, ενώ ένας τοίχος από μαυροπίνακα κρύβει μια καρέκλα - μασάζ. Κλασικά περίπτερα με κρεμασμένες εφημερίδες λειτουργούν ως ήσυχοι τηλεφωνικοί θάλαμοι. 
Τέλος, το εντευκτήριο σχεδιάστηκε σαν παραδοσιακός χώρος σύναξης ελληνικής οικογένειας, με τραπεζαρία και απλές καρέκλες. Η τοπική και "βιομηχανικό-οικιακή" αίσθηση εδώ επιτυγχάνεται με τους εμφανείς αγωγούς στην οροφή εμφανούς σκυροδέματος, και το παραδοσιακό πάτωμα από τσιμεντοκονία με τα χειροποίητα πλακάκια. Γίνονται όλο και μικρότερα: 19 γραμμάρια!

Πριν το ΕΟΠΥΥ ήμουν στο ΤΣΜΕΔΕ. Το ΤΣΜΕΔΕ ήταν ένα απαράδεκτο ταμείο άλλα τουλάχιστον είχες τη δυνατότητα να πας σε όποιον γιατρό ήθελες, να εξεταστείς και μετά να πας την απόδειξη στο ταμείο να πάρεις μέρος των χρημάτων πίσω. Κάτι που ήταν στο πλαίσιο της λογικής.

Πρόσφατα το ΤΣΜΕΔΕ (όπως και όλα τα ταμεία) εντάχθηκε στο ΕΟΠΥΥ.

Όπως και εγώ, έτσι και η κόρη μου έχει μια μικρή δυσκολία στο γράμμα ‘σ’. Εγώ δυστυχώς την κουβάλησα όλα αυτά τα χρόνια και μερικές λέξεις δυσκολεύομαι να τις πω, κάτι που μου δημιουργεί ένα μικρό τρακ πριν μιλήσω σε κοινό. Αυτό δεν ήθελα να το έχει και η κόρη μου. Έτσι αποφάσισα να την πάω σε κάποιο λογοθεραπευτικό κέντρο τώρα που είναι μικρή για να μάθει να μιλάει σωστά. Περιγράφω τη διαδικασία ακριβώς όπως είναι με απλά(;) βήματα.

1. Τηλέφωνο στο 1535. Αναμονή μερικούς μήνες.

2. Αναμονή 2-3 ώρες στο νοσοκομείο παρόλο το ραντεβού. Λαμβάνω ιατρική γνωμάτευση (πρέπει να περαστεί πρώτα από πρωτόκολλο και μητρώο, όμως. Σφραγίδες)

3. Στο τοπικό ΙΚΑ για σφραγίδα από ελεγκτή ΕΟΠΥΥ (γιατί μια σφραγίδα παραπάνω πάντα χρειάζεται)

4. Φάκελος από το λογοθεραπευτικό κέντρο ο οποίος μεταξύ άλλων περιέχει φωτοτυπίες από τα πτυχία των λογοθεραπευτών (!)

5. Κατάθεση φακέλου και σφραγισμένης γνωμάτευσης  στο ΥΠΑΔ (Αιγάλεω)

6. Μηνιαία κατάθεση αποδείξεων από το λογοθεραπευτικό κέντρο στο ΥΠΑΔ στο Αιγάλεω.

7. Δεν περιγράφω άλλο!!

Και τώρα ας απαντήσει κάποιος στην ερώτηση: Αν το κράτος δεν μπορεί να αναθέσει σε κάποια εταιρεία να αναλάβει να φτιάξει το πληροφοριακό σύστημα που θα συνδέει γιατρούς, κέντρα, νοσοκομεία, ασφαλιστικά ταμεία, φαρμακεία ώστε να μη χρειάζεται να δαπανά ο κάθε πολίτης δεκάδες ώρες σε ουρές και αναμονές και μάλιστα χωρίς κανένα όφελος για κανέναν, ας το αναθέσει σε μένα και μάλιστα δωρεάν. Ναι, αυτοπροσφέρομαι, εδώ είμαι… για σας!!

The Internet went crazy when Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer decided to ban remote working at the company, a decision that drastically affected more than 500 employees. Debate raged over the merits of remote working. Many thought Mayer's move was uncalled for and archaic, and predicted it would end up backfiring, while other saw her move as a last-resort attempt to re-focus Yahoo after a decade of falling behind its competitors.

A Deeper Look: No One’s “Right”

Statistics are being offered left and right, and it’s becoming difficult to keep track of what’s “correct.” The fact of the matter is, there’s no one “right” answer. It’s more a process of deciding your own company's values, priorities and strategy.

On average, based on many studies, most people are actually more productive working independently from home. However, further study identifies certain types of workers who may be much more productive working in the office. It's important to look not only at the average statistics, but also at how the numbers break down.   According to a study done by economist E. Glenn Dutcher, summarised in The Wall Street Journal, mechanical and repetitive tasks were performed better in the office, whereas creative tasks had a higher success rate when employees were outside of the office.  

Marissa Mayer’s Argument: Favoring The Office

Mayer’s stated rationale for stopping remote working at Yahoo was that if everyone is to work as a team, they have to be in the same physical space. It’s clear that there are obvious benefits to a unified working environment – brainstorming with colleagues, random conversations that spark valuable idea, even simple teambuilding and camaraderie. This is what Yahoo management sent to employees:  

To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices. Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings. Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.

Yahoo seems to think impromptu team meetings in a shared environment will bring the company closer together, and that the increased social interactions will stimulate new ideas that will benefit the company. That remains to be seen, but over the 8 months that Mayer has been in charge, Yahoo stock has risen 50%, and has continued to rise since the announcement in February. But the new policy doesn't kick in till June, so it's too early to measure its true impact.

The Case For Remote Working

Over the past few years, many studies have brought to light various benefits of working from home. Let's look at a few of those benefits.

Many studies have shown that remote work leads to happier, more productive employees. Remote employees tend to work longer hours and are on average much healthier, taking fewer sick days (which saves money in variety of ways).

A Standford study followed a Chinese travel agency with more than 12,000 employees that experimented by having 200 employees telecommute. The findings showed the telecommuting employees had better working statistics than their office-bound colleagues. They took more calls, worked more hours and needed fewer less sick days.   Interestingly, though, only half of these 200 successful telecommuters expressed the desire to continue telecommuting once the experiment concluded, preferring the social interactions of the office.   In another study, British telecom giant O2 experimented by instructing 3,000 of its employees to try working from home for a day. More than a third (36%) of them reported being more productive from home. The employees nabbed an extra 1,000 hours of sleep, and 14% said they saw more than their families.

In addition, 1,000 hours usually spent commuting was instead spent working, saving 2.2 tons of CO2 emissions (equivalent to about 42,000 miles of diesel-car driving).

Remote working can be especially beneficial for young parents, and can be a great way for company's to burnish an image as an accepting and flexible organization looking to bridge the gender gap.     Remote working also makes it easier for employers to shop the global talent pool, and to hire physically disabled workers who might find it difficult to make it into the office every day.    What's best for your company? That depends on the company's culture, type of work, location and many other factors. But despite Marissa Mayer's best efforts, it's clear that remote working remains a growing trend supported by increasingly powerful technology solutions.

There's no better way to start off the afternoon than coming to terms with your mortality, which you'll need to do if you want to take advantage of Google's new Inactive Account Manager. Google launched the service on its account settings page to give users options with their account should it remain inactive for an extended period of time.

It's simple to set up: choose a timeout period—three, six, nine, or twelve months of inactivity—and from there you can direct Google on what to do with your Gmail messages, Blogger posts, Contacts, Google+ account, Google Voice, and YouTube accounts. (Basically, any Google services you've used in the past.) After that time period of inactivity, Google will send out a text message and e-mail the secondary address you provide. If you don't respond, it will assume... well, the worst. "We hope that this new feature will enable you to plan your digital afterlife," Google concluded in the blog post.

If you have intentions of allowing a friend or family member to have access to that data, you can set up the service to notify up to 10 people that your account has been inactive for the time you've specified. Google will then ask for verification details for the listed people, like a phone number and e-mail address. When you're ready, you can send out an e-mail to those people you've entrusted with your data should anything happen to you.

Foursquare has checked in as the mayor of Debt Town today after announcing $41 million in loans from new and current investors. Which really puts the pressure on the company to generate real revenue as it shifts its focus away from simple social check-ins and tries to recoup lost ground in the battle over local search.

No investors plunked down cash for new Foursquare shares. Instead, new investor Silver Lake Waterman led the financing with what other reports are calling a multiyear loan, while existing Foursquare investors — Andreessen Horowitz, O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures — offered loans that will convert to equity if Foursquare's valuation rises.

In other words, Foursquare just put itself into the hole in a high-risk gamble. The Silver Lake loan will most likely force the startup to make regular interest and principal payments lest it risk default — creating a steady cash drain that most startups try hard to avoid. We've reached out to Foursquare for more information on that investment, and I'll update when and if I hear back.

The convertible debt, meanwhile, represents a hedge of sorts for the company's existing investors. They get to sidestep the question of Foursquare's actual valuation — which obviously suggests it's not doing that great — and, should things go south, may stand a better chance of recouping some of their investment than if they held nothing but equity.

A Foursquare In Flatland

This means Foursquare, which has increasingly found itself in trouble with the entry of Google+ and Facebook into local search, is under a lot more pressure to demonstrate that it can make money. Investors like Union Square's Albert Wenger claim they see opportunities for Foursquare to take off, with the explosion of smartphones and abatement of couponing services like Groupon.

Wenger highlights what Foursquare really wants you to do with its app: Don't just check in, but identify retailers and businesses more actively so that your data in turn can drive better local searches. It's a tough nut to crack, particularly since Android users are more easily tied to Google to do the same thing, and many smartphone users of any platform are apt to use Facebook.

This may be the key problem for Foursquare: it's too specialized. Users may be more likely to share information on Facebook, for example, because they're already using it to socialize. I don't use either service regularly, but if I did, I'd rather share a review with my more well-developed network of Facebook friends.

Foursquare is going to have to turn itself around and get more money coming in the door. If it can't do get positive cash flow through its services, it may have to resort to other methods, such as raise equity privately or publicly to pay off debt holders.

There's also the option my former colleague Jon Mitchell has put forth: Fourquare could sell itself to Apple. Or any bigger company, for that matter. Given Apple's need for better local data, Mitchell's argument makes a whole heck of a lot of sense.

However it does it, Foursquare now has to make money fast to work off this new debt in a very competitive market. If it doesn't get traction soon, Foursquare won't be mayor of anything.

[Ruben van der Vleuten] wanted to get a look at the adventure a package experiences when shipped from one place to another. So he threw together this mishmash of components to record the experience. We certainly enjoyed watching the fast motion video found after the break. We wonder what the shipping agency thinks about this sort of thing?

Camera, digital storage, and battery technology have gotten to the point that it’s both cheap and easy to do this sort of surveillance. But there are a few logistical things that [Ruben] took into account to make this work quite well. First off, he need to hide the camera in a way that would ensure the package didn’t look suspicious. He ended up writing his name on the side of the box and boring a hole through one of the black letters which is smaller than a pea and very hard to spot. To make sure he wasn’t recording a ton of empty (dark) frames he also included electronics to sense motion. When the package is moving the video is always rolling. when not moving the hardware wakes for just 3 seconds every minute to shoot video.

Hoping that it can put the launch issues of the PC version behind it, EA has announced the availability of SimCity for Mac. The company says that from June 11th, you'll will be able to purchase a copy of SimCity on its Origin games distribution platform and receive a copy playable on both the Mac and PC. That means if you have already purchased the PC version, you'll now be able to download it and play on the Mac for no extra charge.

Δημοσίευμα της Wall Street Journal αναφέρει ότι Apple και Yahoo βρίσκονται σε συζητήσεις για μια βαθύτερη ενσωμάτωση των υπηρεσιών της εταιρείας στο λειτουργικό σύστημα iOS μέσω Siri ή άλλων εφαρμογών. Ήδη η Apple κάνει ευρεία χρήση δεδομένων της Yahoo στο iPhone και iPad για παράδειγμα στις εφαρμογές καιρού και μετοχών και στα αθλητικά στατιστικά που προσφέρει το Siri.

Μια τέτοια συνεργασία θα μπορούσε ενδεχομένως να αποβεί κερδοφόρα και για τις δύο πλευρές. Για τη Yahoo μια δυναμική επανείσοδος στην αγορά των smartphones και tablets περιλαμβάνει αδιαμφισβήτητα το iPhone ως ένα πολύ καλό έναυσμα ενώ για την Apple η απαγκίστρωση από την Google είναι κάτι παραπάνω από ευπρόσδεκτη. Μέχρι στιγμής φαίνεται πάντως ότι δεν έχει ολοκληρωθεί κάποια συμφωνία αλλά αν έπρεπε να μαντέψουμε θα λέγαμε ότι είναι ένα πολύ εφικτό σενάριο και αναμένουμε να δούμε τι καρπούς θα αποφέρει η συνεργασία αυτή.
