Notice the small details. Passbook automatically increases the brightness to the maximum, and disables the automatic screen lock. You don't need the Lufthansa app, just tap on the link in the e-mail. The other small detail. The boarding pass can show up as a notification according to time and geolocation.
For instance, I was flying with Lufthansa from Heathrow to Frankfurt. The boarding pass showed up when I was in Heathrow airport, a couple of hours before my flight. Handy! Come on other companies! This is actually useful! I guess there is a way to add whatever you want in Passbook, so, I'm expecting Tripit or someone to start a wrapper service for adding things to Passbook.

Τους 56 σταθμούς έφτασε το δίκτυο του Μετρό της Αθήνας μετά την παράδοση των σταθμών Περιστέρι και Ανθούπολη στο επιβατικό κοινό από το Σάββατο 6 Απριλίου. Πρόκειται για την πρώτη παράδοση επέκτασης τα τελευταία 6 χρόνια (το τμήμα Μοναστηράκι – Αιγάλεω της γραμμής 3 παραδόθηκε στις 27 Μαΐου 2007), και την πρώτη παράδοση σταθμών τα τελευταία 2 χρόνια (ο σταθμός Αγία Παρασκευή άνοιξε στις 30 Δεκεμβρίου 2010).
Ο δήμος Περιστερίου γίνεται ένας από τους λίγους δήμους της Αττικής που εξυπηρετείται από τουλάχιστον 3 σταθμούς του Μετρό (Άγιος Αντώνιος, Περιστέρι, Ανθούπολη) μετά τους δήμους Αθηναίων, Αμαρουσίου, Χαλανδρίου και Νέας Ιωνίας.
Ο σταθμόςΠεριστέρι βρίσκεται στη Λεωφόρο Παναγή Τσαλδάρη, στο ύψος του δημαρχείου Περιστερίου (Google maps). Αποτελείται από 3 επίπεδα συνολικής επιφάνειας 11.000 τ.μ. Έχει εισόδους- εξόδους στην Πλατεία Δημοκρατίας και στην Π. Τσαλδάρη και Αισώπου.
Η πλατεία Δημοκρατίας αποδόθηκε για χρήση δύο χρόνια νωρίτερα. Στη νέα ενοποιημένη μορφή της (κατά το παρελθόν ήταν δύο πλατείες που τέμνονταν από την οδό Παναγή Τσαλδάρη), καλύπτει πλέον μια ενιαία έκταση 9 στρεμμάτων, με χώρους πρασίνου και ανάπαυσης των επισκεπτών. Επιπλέον, ένα ακόμη ιδιαίτερο αρχιτεκτονικό χαρακτηριστικό της νέας πλατείας είναι ο υψηλής αισθητικής γυάλινος θόλος που επιτρέπει στο φυσικό φως να προσεγγίζει τα δύο επίπεδα του σταθμού Περιστέρι.
Ο σταθμός Ανθούπολη βρίσκεται στην οδό Αναπαύσεως, μεταξύ των οδών Αμφιλοχίας και Θηβών, με είσοδο-έξοδο επί της οδού Αναπαύσεως και επί της Θηβών (Google maps). Λόγω των ακατάλληλων εδαφολογικών συνθηκών στην αρχική θέση του Σταθμού, μετατοπίστηκε μετατοπίστηκε τελικά κατά 350 μέτρα νοτιότερα. Μελλοντικά, προβλέπεται η δημιουργία υπόγειου χώρου στάθμευσης 450 θέσεων πλησίον σταθμού.
Ο σταθμός Ανθούπολη θα είναι ο τερματικός σταθμός της γραμμής 2 προς βορρά για αρκετά χρόνια, έως ότου κατασκευαστεί η επέκταση της γραμμής προς Κηπούπολη, Πετρούπολη, και Ίλιον. Η επέκταση αυτή βρίσκεται στο στάδιο των προκαταρκτικών ερευνών και μελετών και θα είναι η επόμενη επέκταση της γραμμής 2 που θα κατασκευαστεί αλλά με τα μέχρι στιγμής δεδομένα, δεν αναμένεται πριν από το 2020.
Οι ήδη έτοιμες επεκτάσεις που αναμένεται να δοθούν στο κοινό μέσα στο 2013 είναι:
Ιούλιος 2013: Επέκταση της γραμμής 2 προς Ελληνικό (σταθμοί Ηλιούπολη, Άλιμος, Αργυρούπολη και Ελληνικό)
Σεπτέμβριος 2013: Επέκταση της γραμμής 2 προς Αγία Βαρβάρα (σταθμός Αγία Μαρίνα)
Επέκταση της γραμμής 3 προς Πειραιά
Κανονικά συνεχίζονται οι εργασίες για την επέκταση της γραμμής 3 από την Αγία Μαρίνα προς το λιμάνι και το κέντρο του Πειραιά. Σε λίγους μήνες αναμένεται και η έλευση του μηχανήματος κατασκευής σηράγγων (μετροπόντικας) ώστε να αρχίσει την εκσκαφή μέχρι το τέλος του 2013.
Η πρόοδος των έργων της επέκτασης έχει ως εξής:
Έχουν ολοκληρωθεί οι εργασίες κατασκευής πασσάλων προσωρινής αντιστήριξης και κεφαλόδεσμου στο φρέαρ εκκίνησης του Μηχανήματος Διάνοιξης Σηράγγων (ΤΒΜ).
Ολοκληρώθηκαν οι εργασίες παράκαμψης δικτύου ΔΕΗ, ΟΤΕ καθώς και οι κυκλοφοριακές ρυθμίσεις στην οδό Ελ.Βενιζέλου στο σταθμό Αγ. Βαρβάρα.
Έχουν ολοκληρωθεί οι αρχαιολογικές εργασίες στο σταθμό Κορυδαλλό όπου δεν βρέθηκαν σημαντικά ευρήματα ενώ σύντομα θα ξεκινήσουν και οι συμπληρωματικές αρχαιολογικές τομές. Οι εργασίες αποξήλωσης στεγάστρων καταστημάτων, καθώς και η κατασκευή νέων πεζοδρομίων στον ανατολικό και νότιο τμήμα της Πλατείας Ελευθερίας έχουν ολοκληρωθεί.
Σε εξέλιξη βρίσκονται οι διερευνητικές εργασίες για τις οδεύσεις των δικτύων ακαθάρτων και ομβρίων στην πλατεία Οδησσού στο σταθμό Πειραιά. Σε εξέλιξη η μεταφορά περιπτέρων στην πλατεία Οδησσού και η αρχαιολογική διερεύνηση.
Η επέκταση της γραμμής 3 προς Πειραιά έχει μήκος 7,6 χιλιόμετρα και περιλαμβάνει 6 νέους σταθμούς: Αγία Βαρβάρα, Κορυδαλλός, Νίκαια,Μανιάτικα, Πειραιάς και Δημοτικό Θέατρο. Όταν τεθεί σε λειτουργία θα εξυπηρετεί περισσότερους από 135.000 επιβάτες σε καθημερινή βάση, ενώ με την οριστική ολοκλήρωση της γραμμής, θα είναι εφικτή η απευθείας σύνδεση του Αεροδρομίου Ελ. Βενιζέλος με το λιμάνι του Πειραιά μέσα σε λιγότερο από μία ώρα.
Γραμμή 4
Συνεχίζονται οι γεωλογικές και γεωτεχνικές έρευνες και μελέτες για την κατασκευή της γραμμής 4 του Μετρό. Τα δύο τμήματα της γραμμής στα οποία δίνεται προτεραιότητα είναι το αρχικό τμήμα Άλσος Βεΐκου – Ευαγγελισμός και ο κλάδος Ευαγγελισμός – Βύρωνας – Ηλιούπολη (που μελλοντικά θα αποτελέσει τμήμα της γραμμής 5).
Το τμήμα Άλσος Βεΐκου- Ευαγγελισμός της γραμμής 4, προϋπολογισμού 1 δις ευρώ, θα καλύπτει μια απόσταση 8,5 χλμ. με 9 νέους σταθμούς (Άλσος Βεΐκου, Γαλάτσι, Κυψέλη, Δικαστήρια, Αλεξάνδρας, Εξάρχεια, Πανεπιστήμιο, Κολωνάκι, Ευαγγελισμός). Θα εξυπηρετεί καθημερινά περισσότερους από 200.000 επιβάτες στους Δήμους Γαλατσίου και Αθηναίων.
Η γραμμή 4 θα έχει συνολικό μήκος 33 χλμ. με 29 νέους σταθμούς και σχεδιάζεται να εξυπηρετήσει ιδιαίτερα πυκνοδοµηµένες περιοχές, όπως Γαλάτσι, Κυψέλη, Εξάρχεια, Παγκράτι, Βύρωνα, Ζωγράφου, Ιλίσια, Ψυχικό, Χαλάνδρι, Μαρούσι κ.ά. Ο εκτιμώμενος προϋπολογισμός του συνόλου του έργου θα είναι 3,3 δισ. ευρώ ενώ καθημερινά θα εξυπηρετούνται περίπου 500.000 επιβάτες.
Mobile app developers have a favorite pastime: complaining about fragmentation in the world of Android. “So many screen sizes! So many version numbers! Why can’t Google be more like Apple and make it simple?”
Developers tend to be a whiny lot.
Yet, it can be hard to keep track of the ever-evolving Android platform. Since 2008, there have been 39 updates to Android among nine major system versions. From Cupcake version 1.5 to Jelly bean version 4.2.2, there have been thousands of design changes, feature additions, security updates and general improvements to Android. Only the most dedicated of developers can tell you precisely what is different in each version of Android. Add all of the major and minor tweaks Google has added to Android with devices from the likes of Samsung, HTC, Motorola, LG and others and it becomes a complicated environment in which to build an app.
Boston-based mobile cloud services company Kinvey understands developers’ pain. It has created a handy infographic that maps the major changes to Android from inception to the latest build and even speculates on what might be coming next with the so-called Android 5.0, Key Lime Pie, which Google will likely announce at its I/O developers conference in May. But The Wall Street Journal has examined whether these free meals should be taxed as fringe benefits. According to lawyers who spoke to the Journal, the IRS has been considering the question of whether Google's cafeterias are more like a necessary amenity or a company car, and the legal ground for either case is still shaky.

Χτες, κατά τη διάρκεια μιας μικρής εκδρομής στη Φωκίδα, είχα την ευκαιρία να επισκεφτώ δύο μουσεία: το Μουσείο Δελφικών Γιορτών Άγγελου και Εύας Σικελιανού στους Δελφούς, και το Ναυτικό και Ιστορικό Μουσείο Γαλαξειδίου.
Βέβαια, ήδη υπερβάλω χρησιμοποιώντας το ‘επισκεφτώ’ μιας και στο Μουσείο Σικελιανού δεν μπορέσαμε (: η γυναίκα μου κι εγώ) να περάσουμε την σιδερένια και κλειδωμένη αυλόπορτα.
Ο λόγος;
Το μουσείο δεν φαίνεται να έχει συγκεκριμένες ώρες που είναι ανοιχτό. Κανονίζεις την επίσκεψη με τηλεφωνικό ραντεβού. Πράγμα που μπορώ να καταλάβω για ένα μικρό περιφερειακό μουσείο. Αλλά στο τηλεφώνημα που κάναμε για να μας ανοίξουν πήραμε την απάντηση ότι … δεν δουλεύουν τα Σαββατοκύριακα (sic). Προφανώς, οι ανά τον κόσμο φίλοι του Σικελιανού γνωρίζουν διαισθητικά ότι πρέπει να πάνε μόνο καθημερινή και μάλιστα πρωινές ώρες.
Μικρό το κακό θα μου πείτε με όσα ζούμε αυτόν τον καιρό. Μικρό; Εξαρτάται. Αν το καλοκοιτάξεις, διακρίνεις ότι συνοψίζει πολλά απ’ όσα ζούμε αυτό τον καιρό.
Λίγη ιστορία: το μουσείο ήταν το σπίτι που έχτισε το 1927 ο Άγγελος κι η Εύα Σικελιανού (που έχτισε η Εύα Πάλμερ δηλαδή, μιας κι αυτή έβαζε τα λεφτά) όταν ξεκινούσαν την προσπάθεια τους για την αναβίωση των Δελφικών γιορτών. Τι ήταν αυτή η αναβίωση; Με σύγχρονους όρους και χωρίς περιστροφές, μια παλαβομάρα. Αλλά χάρις σ’ αυτή την παλαβομάρα ξανάρχισε να παρασταίνεται σκηνικά το αρχαίο δράμα. Η εικόνα των πούλμαν που αδειάζουν θεατές και τουρίστες κατά εκατοντάδες στην Επίδαυρο είναι απότοκο αυτής της παλαβομάρας. Και γι αυτό οι παλαβομάρες δεν πρέπει να κρίνονται από τον στόχο τους αλλά από τις συνέπειες τους. Και κατ’ αυτό τουλάχιστον η παλαβομάρα του Σικελιανού είχε μια τεράστια θετική συνέπεια.
Πέραν όμως του δράματος, η ρομαντική αυτή προσπάθεια είναι μια ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία. Κι οι ενδιαφέρουσες ιστορίες μπορούν να τραβήξουν ενδιαφέροντα κόσμο. Το σε τι έχουμε ανάγκη τον κόσμο τώρα, στην εποχή των ισχών αγελάδων, ελπίζω να μην χρειάζεται να το εξηγήσω.
Μια άλλη πτυχή της ιστορίας του μουσείου είναι πως το σπίτι είχε μείνει ερείπιο για περίπου 70 χρόνια. Και πως το αρχείο του Σικελιανού είχε καταστραφεί, καεί και κλαπεί σε μεγάλο μέρος. Αναρωτιέται κανείς γιατί. Γιατί χρειάστηκαν 70 χρόνια για να ενδιαφερθεί κάποιος. Και μόνο ωφελιμιστικά να το δεις, η θέση της έπαυλης (γιατί περί αυτού πρόκειται) είναι ικανή να τραβήξει από μόνη της επισκέπτες. Είναι στο ψηλότερο σημείο του χωριού των Δελφών, με απίστευτη θέα στον κάμπο της Άμφισας και δίπλα στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο στο ύψος του Σταδίου.
Απ’ ότι μάθαμε τώρα ανήκει (;) στο Δήμο Δελφών. Κι η αναστήλωση που έχει γίνει, εξωτερικά τουλάχιστον δείχνει υποδειγματική. Που σημαίνει ότι πρέπει να δαπανήθηκε ικανός αριθμός χρημάτων. Προς τι; Για να μισθοδοτείται κάποιος υπάλληλος να είναι stand by τις ώρες που δεν πατάει κανείς;
Στο δεύτερο μουσείο η εμπειρία ήταν πολύ καλύτερη: και ανοιχτό το βρήκαμε, και σε πολύ καλή κατάσταση και με περιποιημένο το ενδιαφέρον εκθεσιακό υλικό. Μια πινακίδα στην είσοδο μας πληροφορούσε ότι η ανακαίνιση έγινε με την αρωγή του ιδρύματος Νιάρχου.
Το αρχαιολογικό κομμάτι του μουσείου είναι σίγουρα ενδιαφέρον αλλά όχι κάτι μοναδικό. Η Ελλάδα βρίθει αρχαιολογικών μουσείων. Το ναυτικό μέρος όμως είναι μοναδικό μιας και σκιαγραφεί την ναυτική ιστορία και τις επιδόσεις της πόλης στο τέλος του 19ου αιώνα. Μιας πόλης που αποτελούσε το δεύτερο μεγαλύτερο λιμάνι της Ελλάδας μετά τη Σύρα κι ένα από τα μεγάλα της Μεσογείου.
Παρακολουθώντας και μόνο τις υδατογραφίες των καραβιών του Γαλαξειδιού έμαθα να ξεχωρίζω το μπρίκι από τη σκούνα, το μπάρκο από το μπάρκο-μπέστια και το λόβερ από τη μπρατσέρα.
Κοιτάζοντας τους χάρτες με τα λιμάνια που προσέγγιζαν οι Γαλαξειδιώτες καπετάνιοι θαύμασα κι απόρησα συγκρίνοντας με το σήμερα και την εσωστρέφεια που μας τρώει: Αζοφική και Κριμαία, Οδησσός και Βατούμ, Κωνσταντινούπολη, Σμύρνη, Αλεξάνδρεια, Μάλτα, Βενετία, Λιβόρνο, Μασαλία, Γιβραλτάρ κι ως πάνω στο Κάρντιφ και το Λίβερπουλ.
Κι εύλογα αναρωτιέσαι γιατί παρήκμασε; Το αίτιο είναι γνωστό: δεν προσαρμόστηκαν στον ατμό. Αλλά γιατί; Τι τους εμπόδισε; Δεν ξέρω, δεν έχω ιστορική γνώση για το θέμα όμως βλέποντας τα όργανα των καραβιών (πυξίδες, ρολόγια, ταχύμετρα, βυθόμετρα, διαβήτες για χάραξη πορείας κτλ) και τους χάρτες, πρόσεξα ότι δεν υπήρχε τίποτα ελληνικής προέλευσης. Τα αντικείμενα που ενσωμάτωναν πολλή γνώση πάντα τα προμηθεύονταν από τη Δύση. Κι επειδή από το πανί στον ατμό είναι ένα άλμα σε γνώση, αυτό το παλαιό ντεφώ, της επίδοσης σε δραστηριότητες χαμηλής έντασης σε γνώση, αποδείχτηκε μοιραίο.
Το μουσείο όμως έκρυβε κι άλλες εκπλήξεις, πιο ‘μοντέρνες’: οι τουαλέτες δεν διέθεταν χαρτί γιατί δεν είχαν να το αγοράσουν (sic) και τα βιβλία στης προθήκες στην είσοδο δεν επωλούντο γιατί τους το απαγόρευε η εφορία (sic). Για ποιό λόγο; Σε έλεγχο είχε διαπιστωθεί ότι δεν έκοβαν αποδείξεις (sic).
Αυτό το τελευταίο όταν το άκουσα αφενός άρχισα να βγάζω ατμούς αφετέρου σκέφτηκα “κι εσύ αναρωτιέσαι για τον ατμό ηλίθιε”…
As reported earlier today, Moonshot servers are small, cartridge-like miniservers that take up only about 6% of the same space that a current, full-fledged server does. These cartridges can be slotted into enclosures, known as the Moonshot 1500 chassis, which will hold 45 of the microserver units. A standard server rack can presumably hold anywhere from 10-40 enclosures, similar in look and feel to the Project Redstone development server configuration pictured below.
This miniserver configuration will use 89% less power than a standard server, according to early reports. From a cost standpoint, that's huge. Not only are you knocking down your electric bill by nearly 90% per server, but low-power chips mean far less heat energy is created from voltage leakage and alway-on processors. Less heat means less money spent on cooling.
So What's The Damage?
When you first hear the $61,875 starting price tag for the Moonshot 1500 chassis, it doesn't sound cheap. Granted, there's more hardware in there, such as 8 GB of memory plus management, networking, storage, power cords, cooling components, direct attached disk drives and network switches. But still, that's not exactly bargain basement.
Until, that is, you read the claims from HP that estimate the cost of one of these machines is 77% less expensive than the equivalent computing power of a standard server configuration. In other words, you would theoretically have to cough up $269,021 to get the same computing oomph.
Sure, that's a sales pitch. But it's an attention-getting one.
Houston, We May Have a Problem
Of course, no launch goes off without a hitch, and the first one was readily apparent just off the launchpad. Despite early reports that HP Moonshot miniservers would be configurable with a variety of different processors, such as 32- and 64-bit ARM chips, the initial release is shipping with only Intel Atom 1200 chips.
That's actually not too surprising, unfortunately. ARM-based servers still suffer from the enormous amount of forking and fragmentation in the ARM universe, and so haven't yet grabbed the attention of the development community. HP has done the right thing in being cautious about something the market may not yet be ready for. But it would have been nice if one major vendor had started the ball rolling with a significant ARM server release.
Despite the turbulence, if the hardware and performance specs hold up to real-world use, then it's likely that HP has a real hit here. Expect HP to tout the energy savings aspects of these machines, hard in order to attract IT managers with promises of lower electric bills and operating costs. If customers bite, HP may reach the moon after all.
It’s certainly been an eventful few days for smash-hit TV show Game of Thrones.
On Sunday and just before the premiere of the new season, HBO programming president Michael Lombardo went further than almost anyone expected by admitting that piracy does have an upside.
He described massive downloading of the show as “a compliment” and added that it does nothing to damage DVD revenues. A good thing, considering what followed next.
In their own inimitable way, on Monday at least a million file-sharers paid even more compliments to the show by setting a new BitTorrent swarm record.
But just when you thought Game of Thrones news and controversy was coming to an end, another influential industry player has thrown his hat into the ring.
Timo Vuorensola is a Finnish director and actor who recently directed the 2012 Disney movie Iron Sky. Like millions of others, Vuorensola is also a Game of Thrones fan but he’s hugely disappointed with the service being offered by the local arm of HBO.
“Your service sucks. I bought it because I wanted to be able to pay and watch legally some of my favorite TV-series, namely Game of Thrones,” he told the cable and satellite network in an open complaint.
“First, the quality you are claiming to be HD is far from HD; yes, resolution matches, but the picture looks rotten and crappy thanks to bad compression rates. The image snaps off and the buffering sucks on HD so badly that it renders the service practically unusable,” he continues.
HBO have been accused before of promoting piracy by failing to offer their product in a timely fashion in various countries around the world, but Vuorensola is unhappy with everything – timing, quality and price – all of which are driving people to torrents.
“In Finland we have a saying: ‘Pitäkää tunkkinne’. It means: I fucking tried to pay for this, but your service only promotes piracy through rather expensive pricing, shitty image quality — and, well, unfortunately also your programs are unnecessarily late,” he complains.
“[The] latest episode of GOT was already *everywhere* but on HBO Nordic, and I can’t see *any* reason you are putting a one-to-two day window to releasing stuff that’s going to explode on the Internet the moment it’s released,” he accurately adds.
And Vuorensola knows his stuff when it comes to the world of files and sharing. In addition to Iron Sky he’s also the director of two of the Star Wreck movies, a series of eight films available for free download under a Creative Commons license.
“You think fans are going to sit on their asses and wait obediently for when you finally grant your grace and decide to let the stuff float to the backwater countries like Finland and whatnot. I mean we live in 2013, not in 1993, there’s absolutely no motivation for such behavior,” he notes.
In what must be the final insult, Vuorensola tells HBO that while he will continue to grace the company with his money, he will shun their delivery service and begin obtaining Game of Thrones from the most notorious file-sharing site of all.
“So, here’s what I’m going to do: I will continue paying your monthly fee for the service because I support your taste in content, but the actual content I’m unfortunately forced to grab from Pirate Bay, because your service is atrocious,” he concludes.

Developers who are salivating at the chance to create apps for Google Glass were thrown a (small) bone today. Google released a video presentation of its Google Mirror API, which allows you to build “experiences” for the highly anticipated eyewear.
Google Glass is a headset that projects images into your line of sight, including text messages, photos, and other information. It can also take video and photos from your perspective.
The presentation, called “Building new experiences with Glass,” was first given at the SXSW conference on March 11 by Timothy Jordan, a Google developer advocate. The Google Mirror API is an application programming interface that allows developers to create apps on Google Glass. The company says that you’ll be able to code in any language of your choosing and that if you’ve already developed for YouTube, Drive, or Google+, you should “feel right at home.”
Google Glass most recently made headlines when the company started accepting people into its “Explorer Program.” People in the program can purchase Google Glass for $1,500, to be picked up at, thus far, undisclosed events around the country.
Developers accepted into the program are undoubtedly excited to get their hands on the headset and will be looking for ways to get started on creating for this device.
Google is reportedly working on a successor to the Nexus 7, one aimed at taking the fight back to both Apple's iPad mini and Amazon's Kindle Fire by shrinking the bezel to accommodate a larger and higher-resolution display.
Google announced today that the company is forking the WebKit rendering engine to create its own web rendering engine called 'Blink'. Google had been the using Apple-initiated WebKit project to power its Chrome web browser. Future versions, however, will now be based on this new system.
Google is now free to make changes to its rendering engine with less complexity and bureaucracy than when it was saving its changes to Webkit. The company posted this on its FAQ explaining why it wanted to create a new engine:
The main reason is that Chromium uses a different multi-process architecture than other WebKit-based browsers. So, over the years, supporting multiple architectures has led to increasing complexity for both the WebKit and Chromium communities, slowing down the collective pace of innovation.
With the change, Google has set Chrome and Apple's Safari on their own paths. Webkit was originally created by Apple as a fork to the KHTML rendering engine. Apple took interest in developing it when launching Safari for the Mac, and it now powers Safari for iOS, as well.
WebKit has been heavily adopted by other companies as well with over 20 companies now contributing to the project. Google and Apple, however, have remained the most active contributors to the open-source project.
In fact, Google has been the most active contributor of WebKit in the recent years. This graph from Bitergia (above) shows Google's increasing number of "commits" to WebKit over the years. Google's efforts will now be directed at 'Blink'. Apple has made no public comments about the news.
Originally launched in October 2010 as an iPhone exclusive, Instagram quickly became a runaway success. The photo sharing app was a personal favorite of Apple's Phil Schiller and was chosen as Apple's 2011 iPhone app of the year. Rather quickly, the app amassed millions of users and was held up by Apple enthusiasts as an example of why the iOS ecosystem was superior to Android's.
Instagram's iOS exclusivity, however, wasn't destined to last. After 17 months as an iOS-only application, the Instagram team finally released Instagram for Android on April 3, 2012.
One year later, close to half of Instagram's now 100 million+ users are on Android.
In a blog post detailing the achievements of Instagram for Android over the past 12 months, Instagram team member Philip McAllister wrote:
One year ago today we launched Instagram for Android. In less than a day, over a million people downloaded the app, and now nearly half of all Instagrammers use the Android app to share photos with friends, family and the world.
That's quite an impressive feat.
As for Schiller, you might remember that he deleted his Instagram account shortly after the app hit Android. For what it's worth, Schiller subsequently explained that his decision had nothing to do with Android per se, but was rather the result of Instagram getting a bit too big for his liking.
Instagram is a great app and community. That hasn't changed.
But one of the things I really liked about Instagram was that it was a small community of early adopters sharing their photographs.
Now that it has grow(n) much larger the signal to noise ratio is different. That isn't necessarily good or bad, it's just not what I originally had fun with.
Going forward, it'll be interesting to see if and when the number of active Instagram users on Android surpasses the number of Instagram users on iOS. For those keeping score at home, iOS amassed a 30 million user head start during the 17 months it was an iOS exclusive.

Apple is set to start production of the next iPhone soon, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal. The new iPhone is said to be “similar in size and shape to its current one”, which is consistent with rumors that have indicated the next iPhone release will be a “5S” model rather than a complete ground-up redesign.
Summer Release Possible
The report from the Wall Street Journal suggests the next iPhone may launch as soon as this summer. Summer 2013 officially begins on June 21 and ends on September 21, providing a fairly wide range for a possible release that is consistent with several past iPhone launches.
iPhone 5S Features?
Little is known about the next iPhone, but it’s likely the model will follow the same trajectory of the iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S transition. Thus, a theoretical “iPhone 5S” would be likely to include significant internal component upgrades from the existing iPhone 5 model, including a faster processor with improved graphics handling, a better battery life, and a better camera offering sharper images at an increased megapixel size. The device is also likely to ship with iOS 7.
Color iPhone Models at Lower Cost?
Apple is also said to be working on a lower cost iPhone that may be released this year as well, according to the WSJ. The report indicates the cheaper iPhone model will probably use a different casing material than the existing higher end models built with aluminum unibody and glass, and the shell of the “less expensive” model may even include different colors.
Though not directly mentioned, multiple case colors on a lower-cost iPhone could be similar to that offered by the current iPod touch lineup, which is available in a rainbow of offerings.
Though product rumors should always be viewed with a certain degree of suspicion, The Wall Street Journal has a very strong track record with Apple reporting, rumors, and release schedules.
After months of waiting, Google has finally released a version of its Quickoffice app that is compatible with Apple's iPhone, allowing Apps for Business customers to collaborate with colleagues who haven't made the switch to Google Docs.

Μου αρέσει το μη επιτηδευμένο στυλ του, μου αρέσουν οι συνταγές του και κάθε Κυριακή μεσημέρι στήνομαι μπροστά στην τηλεόραση για να παρακολουθήσω την εκπομπή του (εννοείται βέβαια στη συνέχεια θα τσεκάρω και το site του για να διαβάσω με την ησυχία μου τα υλικά της συνταγής). Τρεις στις τέσσερις συνταγές τουλάχιστον που θα φτιάξει, θα με κάνουν να θέλω να σηκωθώ επιτόπου να αρχίσω να μαγειρεύω ότι βλέπω εκείνη τη στιγμή. Και η αλήθεια είναι ότι έχω φτιάξει αρκετές από αυτές.
Πριν λίγους μήνες έλαβα ως δώρο για τη γιορτή μου ένα από τα πιο πρωτότυπα και ενδιαφέροντα δώρα, μια συμμετοχή σε σεμινάριο μαγειρικής του chef Βαγγέλη Δρίσκα, στο Driskas Test Kitchen σε ένα πολύ όμορφο και προσεγμένο χώρο που βρίσκεται πολύ κοντά στη στάση μετρό Πανόρμου. Το σεμινάριο είχε θέμα την Ασιατική Κουζίνα και δεδομένου την απόλυτη εμπιστοσύνη για το τελικό γευστικό αποτέλεσμα που δείχνω σε συνταγές που έχω κάνει από τον Δρίσκα, τις γνώσεις του πάνω στην Ασιατική Κουζίνα αλλά και την πρόσφατη εμμονή μου να δοκιμάζω συνεχώς νέες συνταγές της συγκεκριμένης ηπείρου, δεν έβλεπα την ώρα και τη στιγμή να πάω να παρακολουθήσω το σεμινάριο.
Στο χώρο μας υποδέχτηκαν με καφεδάκι της προτίμησης μας, γευστικότατα μπισκοτάκια ενώ εξοπλιστήκαμε με στυλό με την επωνυμία των σεμιναρίων, ντοσιέ, μπλοκάκι για σημειώσεις και τις 4 συνταγές που θα παρακολουθούσαμε. Ναι, είναι όλες αυτές οι λεπτομέρειες που κάνουν τη διαφορά. Το σεμινάριο δεν ήταν hands-on οπότε εμείς, τα οχτώ άτομα που βρισκόμασταν εκεί να πάρουμε λίγες από τις γνώσεις του Δρίσκα, τον παρακολουθούσαμε να μαγειρεύει, να δίνει tips και μυστικά για την κάθε συνταγή, για τα υλικά και τα ειδικά προϊόντα που χρειάζεται να διαθέτουμε (σόγια σος, φις σος, σησαμέλαιο, ριζόξιδο, μαύρη ζάχαρη, κάρυ και φυσικά λάιμς και φρέσκο κόλιανδρο) εάν μας αρέσει να μαγειρεύουμε φαγητά ασιατικής προελεύσεως. Τον Δρίσκα αν τον βλέπεις να μαγειρεύει είναι μια σκέτη απόλαυση. Χαμογελαστός, και πολύ ευχάριστος, απαντούσε με χαρά σε όλες μας τις ερωτήσεις ενώ δεν σταματούσε στιγμή να δείχνει πόσο απολαμβάνει ο ίδιος το φαγητό με το να δοκιμάζει συνεχώς και να αφήνει επιφωνήματα ευχαρίστησης.
Στο τέλος της κάθε συνταγής περιμέναμε με εμφανέστατη ανυπομονησία να δοκιμάσουμε και εμείς τα φαγητά τα οποία ήταν όλα μα όλα καταπληκτικά. Είναι αυτό το κάτι στα φαγητά της Ασιατικής κουζίνας που συνδυάζουν τις ελαφριές γεύσεις με την ενδιαφέρουσα πολυπλοκότητα στα υλικά να δίνουν ένα υπέροχα ισορροπημένο γευστικό αποτέλεσμα. Όπως συμβαίνει και με τις εκπομπές του Δρίσκα στην τηλεόραση έτσι έφτιαξα και εγώ στο σπίτι 3 από τις 4 συνταγές που μας παρουσίασε και τη μια από αυτές (με μικρές αποκλίσεις/παρεμβάσεις από εμένα της αρχικής αναλογίας των υλικών) σας παρουσιάζω και εδώ σήμερα. Γιαπωνέζικο κάτσου κάρυ, ή αλλιώς θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε μικρά σνιτσελάκια/παναρισμένες φετούλες από στήθος κοτόπουλο στις οποίες αντί για γαλέτα θα χρησιμοποιήσουμε τριμμένο ψωμί του τοστ (και ελαφρώς μπαγιάτικο αν έχουμε ακόμα καλύτερα) το οποίο θα δώσει μια υπέροχη τραγανή και συγχρόνως αφράτη κρούστα, θα συνοδεύσουμε με ρύζι μπασμάτι και την υπέροχη σάλτσα κάτσου κάρυ. Κάντε αυτή τη συνταγή και θα ενθουσιαστείτε.
Γιαπωνέζικο κάτσου κάρυ με φιλετάκια κοτόπουλου
υλικά για 4 άτομα – απαιτούμενος χρόνος: 1 ώρα
Υλικά:
700 γρ. φιλέτα από στήθος κοτόπουλου
8 φέτες ψωμί του τοστ τριμμένο
3 αυγά
1/2 φλ. τσαγιού αλεύρι για όλες τις χρήσεις
σπορέλαιο για το τηγάνισμα
αλάτι
φρεσκοτριμμένο πιπέρι
για τη συνοδευτική σάλτσα κάτσου κάρυ:
2 κ. σούπας ψιλοκομμένο κρεμμύδι
2 σκελίδες σκόρδο τριμμένες
2 καρότα
2 κ. σούπας σπορέλαιο
1 κ. σούπας κάρυ
2 φλ. ζωμό κοτόπουλο ή λαχανικών
2 κ. σούπας σόγια σος
2 κ. σούπας μέλι
1 κ. σούπας κορν φλάουρ
Εκτέλεση:
Κόβουμε τα φιλέτα του κοτόπουλου σε λεπτές λωρίδες και αλατοπιπερώνουμε.
Τρίβουμε (σταδιακά αν δε χωράνε όλες) τις φέτες του τοστ στο μούλτι και ρίχνουμε το τριμμένο ψωμί σε ένα μπολ.
Χτυπάμε ελαφρά με ένα πιρούνι ή με τον αυγοδάρτη τα αυγά και σε ένα άλλο πιάτο ρίχνουμε το αλεύρι.
Πανάρουμε τις φέτες του κοτόπουλου περνώντας τις διαδοχικά πρώτα από το αλεύρι, μετά από τα αυγά και τέλος από το τριμμένο ψωμί του τοστ.
Ζεσταίνουμε το σπορέλαιο σε ένα μεγάλο αντικολλητικό τηγάνι και τηγανίζουμε τα παναρισμένα κομμάτια του κοτόπουλου. Μόλις ροδίσουν και από τις δύο πλευρές τα αφήνουμε πάνω σε χαρτί κουζίνας για να στραγγίσουν.
Τρίβουμε τα καρότα στον τρίφτη.
Σε ένα κατσαρολάκι ζεσταίνουμε το σπορέλαιο για τη σάλτσα και σωτάρουμε το κρεμμύδι και το σκόρδο για 1-2 λεπτά. Προσθέτουμε τα καρότα και το κάρυ και συνεχίζουμε το σωτάρισμα για 2 λεπτά ακόμα.
Ρίχνουμε τον ζωμό, τη σόγια σος και το μέλι, ανακατεύουμε να αναμειχθούν τα υλικά και βράζουμε τη σάλτσα σε μέτρια φωτιά για 7-8 λεπτά.
Ρίχνουμε τη σάλτσα στο μούλτι να γίνει σαν πολτός και τη ξαναρίχνουμε στο κατσαρολάκι.
Σε ένα ποτήρι ρίχνουμε 3 κ. σούπας κρύο νερό, προσθέτουμε το κορν φλάουρ και ανακατεύουμε. Προσθέτουμε το μείγμα κορν φλάουρ-νερό στη σάλτσα και αφήνουμε για 1-2 λεπτά σε μέτρια φωτιά μέχρι να πήξει ελαφρά.
Μοιράζουμε τα φιλέτα του κοτόπουλου στα πιάτα, περιχύνουμε με τη σάλτσα και συνοδεύουμε με ρύζι μπασμάτι.
Ακόμα και όταν φτιάχνετε το κλασικό σνίτσελ, χοιρινό ή μοσχαρίσιο μπορείτε αφού βάλετε το αλεύρι και το αυγό, αντί να πανάρετε με γαλέτα (ή τριμμένη φρυγανιά) να χρησιμοποιήσετε φέτες του τοστ που θα τρίψετε στο μούλτι να γίνουν ψίχουλα. Εάν έχετε ελαφρώς μπαγιάτικο ψωμί του τοστ είναι ακόμα καλύτερα. Με αυτό το πανάρισμα θα φτιάξετε μια υπέροχη τραγανή και συγχρόνως αφράτη κρούστα όλο νοστιμιά.
