Newswire: GWAR’s restaurant will serve house-made hot dogs, not semen

by Marah Eakin

Like blood and spooge shot from a cannon, more details have come spewing forward about GWAR’s impending restaurant. GWARbar opens later this year in Richmond, Virginia, and promises to serve its patrons “intergalactic junk food” like “house-made hot dogs, freshly ground burgers, and ‘nuggets’ marrying duck and chicken meat,” according to the Washington Post. That should come as a pleasant surprise to patrons, who might have expected the band to force them to eat bull testicles or drink bowls of duck guts. Chef and GWAR guitarist Mike Derks—also known as Balsac The Jaws Of Death—says he’s “making foodie food for people who aren’t foodies,” and was inspired to open the restaurant by his relationship with fellow D.C. chefs Bryan Voltaggio and Mike Isabella (who have both appeared on Top Chef). Voltaggio also turned up, alongside other D.C. chefs, in a mock interview clip ...

Parking spot auction app caves under pressure, halts in San Francisco

by Cyrus Farivar

MonkeyParking, the Italian startup that allows iPhone users to auction off public parking spaces via its smartphone app, announced that it is temporarily suspending operations in San Francisco.

The move comes just one day before the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office said it would sue the firm if it did not stop its activities in the city. Last month, the city sent the firm a cease-and-desist letter informing the company that what it was doing violated local law.

The company insisted that what it was doing was legal and that it would not shut down. But in a statement Thursday, MonkeyParking said it was altering course.

Two of the exoplanets closest to Earth don’t actually exist

by Ars Staff
The Gliese 581 system, as it looked before the recent paper.

Two exoplanets, once considered excellent candidates in the search for life elsewhere in the Universe, do not exist, according to a new study in the journal Science. Both non-planets, Gliese 581d and 581g, were thought to be part of the Gliese 581 star system, located only 20 light-years away.

To those familiar with the history of the Gliese 581 system, the news comes as little surprise. Claims have been repeatedly made regarding the likelihood of habitability for some planet in the system, only to see that likelihood vanish upon closer scrutiny.

Excitement about Gliese 581 first peaked in 2007 when planet c was discovered. As one of the first exoplanets found in its star’s habitable zone (the region around a star where the temperature is ‘just right’ for liquid water to exist), planet c seemed a good candidate for life. So good that, in 2008, a high-powered digital radio signal, dubbed “A Message From Earth,” was sent in the direction of planet c. (It will arrive there in 2029, and, if anyone’s there to respond, we can expect a reply 20 years after that).

Update: Bus co. owner who threatened redditor with lawsuit arrested for cyberstalking

by Sean Gallagher
Suburban Express CEO Dennis Toeppen's mug shot at his booking at the Champaign County Sheriff on July 9.
Champaign County Sheriff

Dennis Toeppen, infamous former cyber squatter and current owner of the Illinois shuttle bus service Suburban Express, rose to further notoriety last year for his attempts to silence social media critics on reddit and Yelp through legal threats and alleged online intimidation. Those critics were responding to Suburban Express's policy of suing students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in an out-of-county court to coerce them into paying penalties when they didn't follow draconian passenger policies. Unsurprisingly, the situation didn't work out well for Toeppen, resulting in a massive Streisand Effect (including drawing attention from Ken “Popehat” White, who offered pro bono legal help to a redditor threatened with a lawsuit).

Yesterday, Toeppen added another chapter to his strange story when he was arrested in Champaign, Illinois on two counts of "Harassment through electronic communications," a class B misdemeanor in Illinois, according to a spokesperson for the Lake County State's Attorney's Office. By this morning, he had posted the $10,000 bond and was free awaiting arraignment, according to a spokesperson for the Champaign County Sheriff's Office where Toeppen was booked.

Toeppen frequently posts “dirt” about his competitors and detractors on his company’s website, and he actively defends his reputation on Yelp and reddit by engaging posters of negative reviews. In last year's public incident, Toeppen eventually dropped his legal threats against a redditor and then had over 100 lawsuits against students that he filed in Ford County dismissed. (Toeppen later filed to vacate their dismissal, however, so that he could re-file them elsewhere.) He has continued to aggressively go after people who express negative opinions since, as Na’ame Firestone of Oakland, California recently experienced on Yelp:

No I will not award Clerics with bonus actions to keep allies alive.

That is one thing I specifically asked. I asked for a higher starting hit point variant. ..was denied.

Update: Details on Microsoft Takeover

Microsoft suspected some of our customers were abusing our service for malicious purposes. However, instead of reporting the malicious activity to our abuse department or law enforcement, Microsoft decided to secretly sue us in civil court.

By filing an ex parte temporary restraining order (TRO), No-IP was prevented from having any knowledge of the case or offering any support in stopping malicious activity. Had Microsoft submitted evidence of abuse at any time, No-IP would have taken swift action to validate the claims and ban any accounts that were proven to be malicious. Instead, Microsoft wasted many months while malicious activity continued.

To state this as emphatically as possible — this entire situation could have been avoided if only Microsoft had followed industry standards. A quick email or call to the No-IP abuse team would have removed the abusive hostnames from the No-IP network.

Information Security Engineer Parisa Tabriz Interview

by adafruit

“Security Princess” is Parisa Tabriz’s official title at Google. Seriously. And yes, you can google that. “‘Information Security Engineer’ is just completely dry and boring and horrible,” she says of the HR-speak title, which indeed whitewashes what Tabriz does all day, which is to hack her employer—the single most recognizable entity of the Internet age—bad-guy-in-basement style. She came up with the moniker before a trip to Japan because she needed business cards to hand out during the elaborate professional introductions traditional in that country. “A couple of people had ‘hired hacker,’” she says. “But I like to one-up people. I thought it was cute.”

"In the world of hacking, Tabriz is basically the equivalent of Glinda the Good Witch—all of the power and skills, none of the evil inclinations or armies of marauding monkeys (just the coder ones). Leading a crew of hacker engineers, she is paid to think like a criminal, to suss out weaknesses in Google Chrome—the world’s most-used Internet browser—that could be exploited by ne’er-do-wells, then ensure that they’re fixed before that can happen. It’s a daily preemptive strike against online identity theft that protects millions of people around the world. Add to that that she’s only 31, one of the rare women in hacking circles, and the furthest thing from the antisocial tech-whiz stereotype, and it’s easy to see why Tabriz is on a rapid upward trajectory."

they then talk about her clothes

A class of pesticides linked to colony collapse disorder in bee colonies has now been linked to a dramatic decline in insectivorous bird populations. Disturbingly, this could also mean that other animals along the food chain are at risk as well.

Security guard: I was fired after bosses saw me on TV buying pot in Washington

Boyer — who camped outside the Green Leaf dispensary for 19 hours in order to be the first person to legally purchase recreational pot in Spokane — says his employer requested he take a drug test within 24 hours.

The 30-year-old, who says he's worked as a security guard "on and off for 12 years," had signed an agreement several years ago agreeing to the drug ban. (It's unclear which security firm had requested the drug test; Boyer did not immediately return a request seeking clarification.)

Goonies/Gremlins Writer Chris Columbus Reportedly Producing Sequels to Both Movies - Do `80s movies multiply when you get them wet?

by Dan Van Winkle

gremlins1

It looks like Goonies rumors never say die. Goonies director Richard Donner has been vocal about a sequel lately, and it looks like he might not have been just playing with our emotions. Now there are rumors that Chris Columbus, who wrote both The Goonies and Gremlins, is on board to produce sequels to both of the `80s classics.

It originally looked like Gremlins would be a remake of the original, but new information says that both movies will be sequels.

According to /Film, the Gremlins sequel will follow the “30 years later” story continuation format that’s been rumored for the Goonies sequel. The Gremlins sequel has been in the works for a while, and when Columbus was asked about it a few years ago, he said:

I think it’s impossible to recreate in a CGI environment. I think it will inevitably lose some of its charm. Those are edgy Muppets in a sense and you don’t want to lose that sense of anarchy that those gremlins had, because behind the scenes are 25 puppeteers making them to come to life.

So hopefully we won’t have any CGI gremlins to worry about, because CGI Yoda really doesn’t give me great confidence about how that would come off. If that’s really the case, a Gremlins sequel could probably work pretty well. It can’t be any worse than the rest of the horror genre.

Goonies, on the other hand… I loved The Goonies, but some things are better left in the past. I might be in the minority in that opinion, though, so feel free to start practicing your happy dance.

Ridiculous Rumor Time: Gus Van Sant Might Direct the American Death Note - Uh... okay?

by Victoria McNally
firehose

meanwhile, in Portland?

LL

Geez, what is up with Japanese  franchises getting turned into Hollywood movies by Academy Award nominated directors lately? First we had Spike Lee and Oldboy (the 2003 Park Chan-wook was inspired by a late ’90s manga of the same name), and now according to rumors, Gus Van Sant is going to do Death Note. Huh. How do you like them apples, Ryuk?

For those who aren’t in the know, Death Note was a mid ’00s manga about a high school student who finds a notebook that, if you write a person’s name on it, will kill that person. Naturally, he decides to become a vigilante serial killer, which prompts Interpol to bring in a super-genius mystery detective to stop him, and it becomes a very intense Holmes vs. Moriarty-style showdown. While the story gets a bit convoluted in the second half if you ask me, the concept and characters were compelling enough to sell 25 million copies and warrant an anime adaptation (fun fact! In the English dub, L’s voice is done by the actor who played Gaeta in Battlestar Galactica), an abridged movie, two live-action Japanese films, and even a video game.

An American adaptation of the series has been in the works for a while now, but according to a website called The Tracking Board (which I had never heard of before now, so take this rumor with a serious grain of salt), the acclaimed director has been asked to take over for Iron Man 3′s Shane Black. Black has been attached to the project since 2013 and wrote the most recent iteration of the script, along with Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry.

If this rumor turns out to be true, then it won’t be Van Sant’s first foray into thriller territory: he also directed  To Die For, about a news anchor who manipulates teenagers into committing murder to get ahead in her career, and Paranoid Park, the story of high school student who covers up an accidental manslaughter to keep from facing the consequences. If you combine the two, it all sounds pretty Death Note-y. Oh, and I guess there was that Psycho remake, too. Let’s just… not talk about that.
