"The Game Cube can be hit with a sledgehammer and work just fine. The Nintendo DS was specifically..."

The Game Cube can be hit with a sledgehammer and work just fine. The Nintendo DS was specifically designed to be able to survive a 1.5 meter (five foot) drop onto solid concrete without breaking, and one of the company’s bigwigs wouldn’t let it go past the design phase until the design team could guarantee it could survive the drop at least 10 times. In fact, Nintendo products have such a reputation for being impossible to break through normal means that they spawned the term “Nintendium”—an all-purpose phrase given to pieces of technology that survive extreme punishment. For example, take the Gulf War Game Boy, an original Game Boy console that survived having a freaking bomb dropped on it.

Nintendo never advertises their products as being durable, they don’t brag about their Game Boys being bomb-proof or their consoles being tough enough to survive being hit by a car. They just expect their customers to be human and include features to prepare for that humanity. While other companies decide that they’re nice by including a cover to protect the screen of the $600 phone you just bought in case you drop it, Nintendo just builds a device that can survive being dropped in the first place and doesn’t make a big deal about it. Because that’s how a real company does business.

How To Fix The Shortage of K-5 Scholastic Chess Facilitators

by samzenpus
theodp writes The good news, writes Michael Thomas, is that wired kids are learning chess at an unprecedented rate. Young children learning chess from tablets can quickly become more knowledgeable than their parents. But the bad news, laments Thomas, is there is so much demand for scholastic chess that there are not enough experienced chess facilitators to go around. Could technology like RFID-tagged chess pieces or services like ChessStream.com be employed to referee second-grader chess matches, Thomas wonders, or are more well-meaning-but-not-necessarily-expert human facilitators — a la T-ball coaches — the answer?

Debunking the 'FIFA Corruption' Twitter account

by James Dator

It's surprisingly easy to make it look like you knew something you never did.

Gplf6em_medium

This series of tweets is making the rounds following Germany's win in the World Cup final. It's supposed to try and make you think that FIFA is corrupt and the tournament is rigged. Heck, when you take a quick glance it looks very legitimate and convincing -- especially after an emotionally draining game.

There's one problem: It's all fake.

That might be hard to believe. After all, the tweets are time-stamped and you can't travel back to tweet something in the past, but a simple trick can make it appear like you did.

1. Create a protected account

This part is simple. Sign up for a new Twitter account and lock it so people can't read your tweets.

2. Tweet every possible outcome you can think of

A user sits behind their protected account and tweets out every possible score, each outcome. Maybe it's just that Germany will win 1-0, perhaps you go more in depth and list every player scoring. It doesn't matter that you're flooding a timeline, no one will see it.

3. Wait for the result and delete your bad tweets

Now it's all about cleaning up your work to leave a few incriminating tweets. In this case it was easy: Germany will win in extra time, they'll win 1-0, Goetze will score. Get rid of "Messi will score" and "Argentina will win" and the rest of your bad tweets and you're set to execute your plan.

4. Make the account public

Suddenly those carefully crafted comments look like prescience. "Whoa... how did they know?! FIFA must be corrupt!" Nope, it's just one individual with an ax to grind and too much time.

Update:

Ha, someone took a screencap of the account beforehand:

firehose

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

rapacityinblue:

bokhyllen:

dezlet:

maxistentialist:

This is a blog post that’s incredibly confusing and painful for me to write.

Yesterday morning, Josh forwarded me a tweet that said:

TIL: Max Temkin, co-creator of Cards Against Humanity, raped a friend of my friend while attending Goucher College. I don’t support CAH.

Having gone to college with both of these people I cannot understand why he thinks this is something she would make up. All she’s asked for is people to know that this happened.

I’m standing with my friend against her rapist.

Please, please, before you reblog this, read Max Temkin’s response. Read it again, and keep reading it until you see all the things he’s saying. Read it until you see all the things he’s not saying.

Notice how he never apologizes. The word “if” has to be inserted into every sentence. “IF she felt I did something wrong,” “IF any part of that was traumatic for her.” Notice how he bandies about words like “feminism” and “rape culture”, and how he uses them to divert blame from himself.

“Part of rape culture that hurts everyone is that it makes it difficult to talk about what is and is not consent, and makes it incredibly scary for people to speak up when their boundaries are crossed. It is entirely possible she read something completely different than I did into an awkward college hookup.”

It’s not his fault. It’s rape culture’s fault. Rape culture muddles boundaries. How was he supposed to know that he crossed one? Don’t forget, a huge part of rape culture is the presumption of consent.

I will continue to be a feminist and an advocate for women’s rights to the best of my capacity. Cards Against Humanity will continue to hire amazing, talented women.

We removed all of the “rape” jokes from Cards Against Humanity years ago. We’ll continue to use the game as best we can to “punch up” and not “punch down.”

In what way is Max Temkin an advocate for women’s rights? Because he removed the date rape card from CaH? Because he hires women? That’s a pretty low bar for advocacy. Google “Max Temkin women’s rights” and the very first hit is this post. There are no records that I found of any activism on his part.

Even if he were, how does A equal B? What does his hiring practices or the cards in CaH have to do with an accusation of assault? Max Temkin can’t have hurt a woman, because he’s a feminist? Hey, I heard that person isn’t racist because he has a black friend.

Notice how bad we’re supposed to feel for him.

I have made a career on the incredible power of social media, and the radical new ability that we all have to say whatever we want to a mass audience. Today I can’t help but feel hurt by those same tools that I love.

He feels hurt! He needs a hug! Never mind that he states outright he’s harassed his victim, sending her at least two messages (one via email, one via FB message) that he’ll admit to. No where in the text does he acknowledge the harm done to his victim, and while he tells his fans not to harass her further, he doesn’t acknowledge that this harassment is taking place, nor apologize for it. Because, remember, this isn’t a post about her assault. It’s a post about how “This is just baseless gossip that will now haunt me for the rest of my life.” Like those poor Steubenville kids with their bright futures.

But the point where this gets truly disgusting is here:

I spoke with my lawyer, and she thinks I have a clear case to sue this woman for libel and get a restraining order, but I have no desire to bully or harm her. Additionally, I’m not wild about the precedent that sets for other women to come forward in cases of actual sexual assault.

Part of this paragraph, like the rest of the post, is crafted to earn our sympathy. He could seek legal action, but he won’t, because he’s such a good guy. Look at him taking the high ground (and flaunting it.) Look at him protecting “other women.”

The truth is, he almost certainly could win a libel suit against his victim. The crime wasn’t reported at the time, and there’s no physical evidence. We all know our courts will go to any lengths to avoid prosecuting and convicting rapists, even in recent cases with clear and unambiguous evidence. What chance does a victim shamed into silence for ten years have?

But the second, more sinister part of this is the way he throws shade on his victim. Don’t miss the implicit threat. He never says he won’t sue, he says “he has no desire to bully or harm her”. (More than he already has, presumably.) He doesn’t want to hurt her, but again, she’s forcing his hand. If he sues, it will be because she made him. And there’s that subtle dig at the end, too. “Cases of actual sexual assault”. He’s minimizing her experiences to make himself look better.

All in all this is an epic piece of mansplaining. It’s also super gross.

OnePlus One review: Big, fast, cheap, open, efficient, and unlocked

by Sam Machkovech
firehose

best recorded smartphone battery performance (36 hours under heavy use at max display brightness), 2nd best Android processor performance, $300 unlocked, no bloatware, open non-Google ROM

The OnePlus One may be giant in most hands, but perhaps less so in a T-Rex's!
Sam Machkovech
Specs at a glance: OnePlus One
Screen 1920×1080 5.5"(401 ppi) IPS
OS Cyanogenmod 11S (based on Android KitKat 4.4.2)
CPU 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801
RAM 3GB
GPU Adreno 330
Storage 16GB or 64GB, no MicroSD slot
Networking GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz, LTE bands 1/3/4/7/17/38/40, Dual Band 802.11b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS
Ports MicroUSB 2.0, headphones
Camera 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera
Size 152.9 mm x 75.9 mm x 8.9 mm
Weight 162g
Battery 3100 mAh
Starting price $300 unlocked
Other perks RBG notification LED, NFC

In our time using the new OnePlus One smartphone, we tried our best to ignore its cost. We wanted to focus on its remarkable traits—its quality 5.5-inch screen, magnificent battery life, Cyanogenmod functionality, quad-core processor, 13MP backward-facing camera, unnecessarily nice front-facing camera, handsome design—and judge them in a vacuum. "Focus solely on how it stacked up to the best-selling modern Android sets"—that was our mantra.

But it's hard to ignore the magical, mystical fact that we actually had a OnePlus One in hand. Months after the phone’s public reveal, and at the beginnings of its odd, invite-only shopping process, the notoriously hard-to-buy phone arrived. And once the price came up, all bias was completely overtaken: $300 for the 16GB model, $350 for 64GB, completely unlocked, no contract necessary.

Google and LG's Nexus 5 is the only other smartphone that comes close to matching OnePlus’ smartphone-to-price ratio, and OnePlus is hitting this price without the benefit of Google's deep pockets. It’s tempting to pin that detail as the headline of any review. Yet the truly remarkable “how’d they do that” part of this phone isn’t its cost, but its quality.

Newswire: NBC casts telenovela star for its upcoming Constantine

by Sonia Saraiya

NBC announced today that its upcoming series Constantine will star Angélica Celaya, a Latina telenovela star (who is currently on the cover of People En Español!). Celaya will play Zed, a character from the comic books that was not in the show’s pilot.

Celaya somewhat replaces Lucy Griffiths’ Liv, who played the female lead in the pilot (and is the pale, dark-haired girl who is featured prominently in the trailer). That character was not in the original Hellblazer comics, which was part of the show’s decision to write her out in early in the first season.

In the world of English-language television, Celaya recently had guest spots on Dallas and Burn Notice.

Grandma repeatedly protested drones at base, now faces a year in jail

by Nathan Mattise

Mary Anne Grady-Flores, a 58-year-old Ithaca, New York, grandmother of three, faces a one-year county jail sentence after being charged with second-degree criminal contempt. The punishment comes after her repeated participation in peaceful anti-drone protests at the Hancock Air Base in DeWitt, New York.

In October 2012, Grady-Flores was taken into custody after a drone protest. According to the Syracuse Post-Standard, 16 people from the Upstate Coalition to Ground the Drones and End the Wars (UCGDEW) blocked three gates at the New York National Guard Hancock Field during the demonstration. They were charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct, and a protection order was eventually issued to prevent Grady-Flores from going near Col. Earl Evans, the mission support group commander at the 174th Attack Wing of the New York Air National Guard. Boing Boing notes that protection orders are at times given to non-violent stalkers, and this one was valid for one year, according to the paper.

Timing was not on Grady-Flores' side. In February 2013, Grady-Flores and 11 other UCGDEW members were being sentenced (this time to 15 days at a local penitentiary following new disorderly conduct charges; trespassing charges were dismissed). According an account Ellen Grady (Grady-Flores' sister) gave the Post-Standard, Grady-Flores was in attendance at the base to photograph the events this time rather than protest herself. But in the initial sentencing hearing, DeWitt Town Justice David Gideon said her intent was "completely irrelevant" to her additional criminal contempt charge since Grady-Flores admitted to being on base property. Grady told the Post-Standard that Grady-Flores "was not a threat to Evans and... unaware that her actions in February violated the protection order." Grady-Flores eventually went to trial for criminal contempt in May and was found guilty. Her sentencing took place this week.

A terrifying precedent: Woman to be tried for murder for giving birth to stillborn

firehose

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

"Rennie Gibbs’s daughter, Samiya, was a month premature when she simultaneously entered the world and left it, never taking a breath. To experts who later examined the medical record, the stillborn infant’s most likely cause of death was also the most obvious: the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck.

But within days of Samiya’s delivery in November 2006, Steven Hayne, Mississippi’s de facto medical examiner at the time, came to a different conclusion. Autopsy tests had turned up traces of a cocaine byproduct in Samiya’s blood, and Hayne declared her death a homicide, caused by “cocaine toxicity.”

In early 2007, a Lowndes County grand jury indicted Gibbs, a 16-year-old black teen, for “depraved heart murder” — defined under Mississippi law as an act “eminently dangerous to others…regardless of human life.” By smoking crack during her pregnancy, the indictment said, Gibbs had “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously” caused the death of her baby. The maximum sentence: life in prison.

Seven years and much legal wrangling later, Gibbs could finally go on trial this spring — part of a wave of “fetal harm” cases across the country in recent years that pit the rights of the mother against what lawmakers, health care workers, prosecutors, judges, jurors, and others view as the rights of the unborn child.

A judge is said to be likely to decide this week if the case should move forward or be dismissed. Assuming it continues, whether Gibbs becomes the first woman ever convicted by a Mississippi jury for the loss of her pregnancy could turn on a fundamental question that has received surprisingly little scrutiny so far by the courts: Is there scientific proof that cocaine can cause lasting damage to a child exposed in the womb, or are the conclusions reached by Hayne and prosecutors based on faulty analysis and junk science?"

Courtney shared this story from Super Opinionated.

A terrifying precedent: Woman to be tried for murder for giving birth to stillborn:

A new “fetal harm” case could open door for women to be prosecuted for everything from miscarriage to abortion

OMG…this is really happening and the mother is a black teen.

Meet the tycoon who is trying to save Detroit by taking it over

by Carl Franzen

Dan Gilbert is 52 years old. He owns Quicken Loans, America's largest online mortgage lender, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He also now owns 60 buildings in Detroit totaling 9 million square feet, a staggering private takeover of the city's infrastructure that he began just over three years ago. The New York Times Magazine looks at Gilbert and the other Detroit optimists, who believe that the Motor City's hard fall as one of America's most-populous and economically prosperous cities over the past two decades has finally reached its bottom. The piece is packed with riveting facts not only about these individuals and their auspices, but the city itself: only 35,000 of Detroit's 88,000 total streetlights work right now, for example — but citizens are installing their own to replace them. Through it, we find that Detroit has become a fascinating test bed for a new kind of radical privatization. For those who call the city home, the stakes couldn't be higher.
