Have A Gander At The First Footage From Studio Ghibli’s Ronia The Robber’s Daughter - Everything I've ever wanted.
Studio Ghibli and Astrid Lingren are big, big deals in my house, so I have a powerful need to see this show. Announced earlier this year, Studio Ghibli is adapting one of the best children’s books of all time, ever Ronia the Robber’s Daughter into an animated series. Directed by Goro Miyazaki, this will be the studio’s first foray into TV series territory.
For those unfamiliar with the book, Ronia (or Ronja, as she is known in my Icelandic home) is the daughter of a robber chief, who befriends the son of a rival and has amazing foresty adventures. It’s wonderful stuff, and I can’t think of anybody better suited to bring it to the screen than Studio Ghibli.
The series will kick off in Japan this October, under the title of Sanzoku no Musume Ronia. Sadly, those of us in the Western world can only wait and hope for a release in our neck of the woods.

Plans show tallest residential building on earth coming to Manhattan
One World Trade Center is just settling into New York's skyline, but a number of competing supertall structures — including the tallest residential building in the world — will soon pop up in midtown. One of those skyscrapers, Nordstrom Tower, will top out at 1,775 feet (541m), according to plans leaked to New York development blog YIMBY. That's just one foot shorter than One World Trade, if you count the spire. Without the spires, Nordstrom Tower will beat the symbolic office building: according to the plans, its roof (including the parapet) will reach 1,479 feet, 78 feet higher than 1 WTC.
That mighty height will make Nordstrom Tower the tallest residential building in the world, beating out Mumbai's One World Tower (1,450 feet) and 432 Park Ave (1,398 feet) in Manhattan, both of which are under construction. The tower, true to its name, will house a gigantic Nordstrom department store on its first seven floors. A hotel and ultra-expensive condominiums will fill the rest of the building.

Taller than 1 WTC, depending on how you measure
News of the tower itself isn't new: it has already been approved under different plans that would have seen it hit just 1,423 feet. The modified plans leaked to YIMBY show a slightly taller roof and an added spire. Those updated specifications also reduced the size of the building's distinctive — and hotly debated — cantilever, which extends almost thirty stories above a neighboring historic building for additional floor space.
It's worth noting that the updated plans for Nordstrom Tower aren't official yet, and plans can change at any time before construction is completed. It's currently expected to be finished in 2018. Nevertheless, there's no question that the landscape of midtown is about to significantly change — no matter what comes of Nordstrom Tower. In addition to nearby 432 Park Ave, other 1,000-foot-plus towers such as One57, 111 W. 57th Street, and Tower Verre are all set to mark the skyline in the coming years.

Hey, gamers? Don’t worry. Developers are not going to stop making shitty games just because critics call them out on it. Some of them will, and I look forward to that, but there will always be people out there making games where you play as a forgettable white guy shooting people in the face and rescuing babes in bikinis. Nobody is going to take that Dionysian joy away from you, except yourself, when you grow up.
The rise of mature games that don’t feature shitty characters and situations does not diminish your supply of immature shit in any way. It caters to a growing market of consumers who have just as much of a right to play a fucking videogame as you do, and doesn’t harm you at all.

BIZARRO BACK ISSUES: SAILOR VENUS KICKS MISOGYNY INTO A COMA AT HER LOCAL ARCADE (1992)
By Chris Sims
We’re only a few weeks away from the debut of a brand-new Sailor Moon Crystal animated series, and folks, I could not be more excited. I love Sailor Moon, ever since I saw the original anime during its run on Cartoon Network when I was a kid, and I’ve been looking forward to the debut of Crystal from the moment it was announced. In fact, in order to prepare for the debut, I’ve even gone back and started reading through the manga.
The thing is, while I’ve read a lot of Sailor Moon, there’s one piece of the franchise that I’ve never been all that familair with: Naoko Takeuchi’s Codename: Sailor V, which I only picked up recently. And it is fantastic, if only for the story where Sailor Venus beats the living crap out of some MRA gamer dork at the local arcade.
heh:
Sailor V’s strength is meant to be fighting actual monsters bent on the destruction of the human race, and not just spindly Reddit bros who hang out at arcades harassing people. That’s kind of an important distinction, if only because one of classifications can take a V-Kick to the face without being rendered comatose in the middle of an arcade, and the other cannot.

Daley Blind makes it 2-0, Brazil getting stomped again?
Could we be in for beatdown No. 2 for Brazil? They're down 2-0 to the Netherlands after just 16 minutes. The first was a penalty -- and should have been a red card, but the Selecao got off lucky there -- and the second came from a half-volley by Daley Blind.
That's Blind's first ever international goal, and yet again, some truly amateurish defending from some of the best defenders on the planet.
Olympian Ian Thorpe Comes Out
firehosevia Ibstopher
After years of dismissing speculation about his sexuality, Ian Thorpe has revealed he is gay. Thorpe made the admission in a tell-all interview with Sir Michael Parkinson, News Corp reports. The interview, which will air on Sunday night on Channel Ten, has been described by Sir Michael as one he had wanted to do for a long time. “Ian Thorpe has always been near the top of my list to interview. The reasons are obvious. Not many athletes can claim to be the best of all time. Ian can."Before he retired for the first time at the age of 24, Thorpe broke 22 world records and won five gold and three silver medals and one bronze medal at the Olympic Games. In his 2012 autobiography, Thorpe wrote, "For the record, I am not gay and all my sexual experiences have been straight. I'm attracted to women, I love children and aspire to have a family one day. I know what it's like to grow up and be told what your sexuality is, then realising that it's not the full reality. I was accused of being gay before I knew who I was.''

Paleo Ultra, ‘Barefoot’ Running Shoes Made From Stainless Steel Chainmail
firehosevia Rosalind
Paleo Ultra is a line of shoes by German footwear maker Gost-Barefoots designed to embrace the natural running trend. The shoes are built from a thin layer of stainless steel chainmail. The “virtually indestructible” shoes are designed to embrace the movement that has led to the popularity of shoes like the Vibram FiveFingers while keeping harmful elements away from the bottom of the foot. The Paleo Ultras are built for natural surfaces like soil and grass, not asphalt and concrete.

Via Gizmodo: Aerosmith made more money on Guitar Hero than from any of their albums
Back in 2008, first week sales for the game topped 567,000 copies and by 2010 more than 3.6 million copies had been sold. On top of the money they made from licensing to Activision, the band saw a huge uptick in sales from their back catalog as well. The game was a great advertising tool, driving more attention for album sales, and continued popularity of the band which expanded further licensing opportunities — the great circle of life in the music business.
"Honestly, should you? Is sex, gender, and sexual behavior intended to be a key point of dungeon..."
”Honestly, should you? Is sex, gender, and sexual behavior intended to be a key point of dungeon crawling, killing monsters, and taking their shit? I cannot think of any other game that has a section implying that you should take your character’s notion of gender roles and sexuality into consideration, much less even mentioning it. I can see some groups wanting to flesh that sort of thing out on a case by case basis, but it seems strange to imply that it should be a standard part of character generation.
Some people think this is a big deal, while others are offended by it. Not necessarily that it exists, though I am sure they are out there, but that the wording is off or whatever (not that I think any one phrasing will appease everyone). Anyway, I have no idea why this is a big deal…well, I have an idea why, it just seems strange to laud 5th Edition as being “forward thinking”, when given the tone and feel of the game it really just comes across out of place (and as far as I know no one is trying to claim that other games without a block of text giving you the “okay” are being conservative or exclusive).
As for myself I do not think it is a big deal. Similarly I also did not think it was a big deal when people were talking about how there is a black adventurer on the inside of the Player’s Handbook. I honestly find it kind of counter intuitive, if the ultimate goal is to treat everyone—no matter your gender or sexuality—as a person, to keep blatantly pointing stuff like this out. I guess that is part of my thinking on treating everyone as equal: I try my best not to notice, nor care about your gender identity, sexuality, or skin color, and I am so confused why people claiming to be for equality insist on pointing these things out, as if it is some meaningful, even defining trait.

"This Pseudo-activism Swinery even lets them go to war with the remnants of the gaming forums in..."
This Pseudo-activism Swinery even lets them go to war with the remnants of the gaming forums in their own midst. Witness the recent volleys they let loose in the subject of sexism in RPGs, where the Modclique just arbitrarily banned an entire side of the argument: on that site you can now freely talk about how horribly sexist RPGs are, but you are NO LONGER ALLOWED to actually even attempt to make the argument that they aren’t! If you do, you’re by definition engaging in sexism (since denying any accusation of sexism, no matter how absurd, is itself an act of sexism to these people, don’t you know!).
Its perfect too, for the people who live in the kind of reality bubble Tangency.net’s moderation policy fosters; a place where one poster can very seriously and straight-facedly tell someone who is trying to claim that in fact RPGs are not sexist that “you don’t get to define the consensus”. Dude, you really wouldn’t like what the REAL consensus of the hobby looks like. I’ll give you a hint: it looks nothing like what you assholes are peddling. You are not the majority, you are a group of demented non-gamers who’ve decided to go on a crusade against a hobby some of you once loved and most of you never did.

New York yuppification — 30 storefronts that used to be cool but now sell…frozen yogurt
Since April, someone has been posting Google Streetview shots from over the last several years on Tumblr to document the locations in New York City that have been turned into frozen yogurt shops. The title of the Tumblr, “…and now it’s a f***ing froyo place,” leaves little doubt about the opinion the Tumblr’s author has of this trend.
More importantly, though, the images serve as a fascinating documentation of the constant changes being made to New York City’s storefronts…
