It’s been estimated that as many as 880 billion photos will be taken by the close of this year. I’m not quite sure how that statistic could ever be properly calculated, but I think it’s safe to say that with the rise of the digital medium, human beings are taking a s**tload more pictures than ever before.

With all those photos being taken, chances are you and I have at one point accidentally wandered into someone else’s frame. It’s likely, however, that you’ll never really know you’ve photo-bombed someones shot. That’s why I was surprised by a Twitter message that I received out of the blue from a photographer I’ve never met.

Here’s what I received from photographer Anthony Kurtz:

Varanasi, India is an epicenter for pilgrimages for people of many walks of life. Locals from all over the subcontinent make religious journeys to the ancient city; monks of a variety of religious beliefs seek refuge in the many temples along the Ganges River; and not to mention: photographers, travelers and tourists flock to the region to seek inspiration in what I consider one of the most photogenic places on Earth.

Looking at the photo from the tiny Twitter preview, it seemed like it could be me but how could I be certain? I’m not quite sure how Anthony recognized me, as we are only are aware of each other via social media. I asked him to send me the high-resolution version of the photo, and asked if he had any others taken in the batch. He then sent the following:

After zooming in to the photo I discovered that without question it was me. Looking at Anthony’s image EXIF data, I saw the image was taken on October 18th, 2007. I am 24 years old now, so I was 17 in the photo. I also noticed in one of the photographs, it appears I am taking a photo of something. So, I looked through my own images captured that day, and found the exact exposure I had taken within seconds of his:

And the big kicker: in the background of my picture there are the boats of people photographing from the river. Which one is Anthony?

When something like this happens, it’s hard not to evoke the tired cliché that the world is an incredibly small place. The world is shrinking even further with our growing level of interconnectedness on the Internet and social media, and this occurrence is an example of that.

I’m sure people have always been on paths that quietly and unknowingly intersect. Now, with people sharing their passions and experiences more than ever, we can be sure that we’ll meet yet again — or sometime in the future — whether we know it or not.

You’re safe for now, Netflix! Actually, since Microsoft is abandoning their Xbox TV content arm that only just got started last month, you’ve probably been safe the whole time. I can’t imagine it’s gone incredibly well for them given this information. Unfortunately, this comes as part of Microsoft’s massive layoff of 18,000 jobs over the next year.

It’s all part of Microsoft’s restructuring under new CEO Satya Nadella. All of the content on the recently released list of Xbox Originals is now canceled with the exception of the Halo digital feature and TV series, as well as the tech documentary Signal to Noise. These projects that are already mid-production will be handled by a few members of Xbox Entertainment Studios who will stay on to oversee them, and the Halo content will continue as planned from 343 Industries and Amblin.

This comes on the heels of news today that Microsoft has seen sales of the Xbox One double since they dropped the mandatory Kinect bundle and $100 from the price tag to match the PS4. That change made sense to bring Microsoft’s console into closer competition with Sony’s machine, but Sony is still pushing ahead with its console-centric TV content in the form of Powers, their TV series that will be out later this year.

At least the more streamlined, games-focused approach is working so far with the Kinect change, so maybe this will be good news for the Xbox One in the long run.

The first cases of locally acquired chikungunya fever have occurred in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, making it the first time the severely painful virus has been spread by a mosquito in the United States, Florida health officials said Thursday.

Health department officials said they believe persons in both cases were bitten by an infected mosquito in South Florida that had bitten someone who had acquired the disease in another country.

In this blog entry I will present the mmapGpio class that provides basic access to all the GPIO’s on the RPI’s 26-pin header using direct register access. The advantage of this approach to GPIO control is that one can bypass Linux and talk directly with the GPIO registers which enables much faster GPIO toggling speeds. Using this approach I was able to get GPIO toggling speeds that exceed 25MHz!!!! That’s much faster than the toggling speeds that can be achieved using the safer but slower SYSFS approach to GPIO control.

The mmapGpio class is intentionally designed to be simple but useful. A great feature of this class is that a single instance can be used to control the all the RPI’s GPIOs. The mmapGpio class with two examples and makefiles can be downloaded from here.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry released a video purporting to show a truck carrying the Buk missile launcher it said was used to fire on the plane with one of its four missiles apparently missing. The ministry said the footage was filmed by a police surveillance squad at dawn Friday as the truck was heading to the city of Krasnodon toward the Russian border.

There was no way to independently verify the video.

After major urban disasters, there are always stories about the stubborn people who refused to evacuate. They've survived incredible danger, or worse, they haven't survived at all. But this isn't because they're foolhardy. There are good reasons that people stay in their homes, to protect their property at all costs.

According to data from the Motion Picture Association of America, the young male demographic that most big Hollywood movies are aimed at is making fewer trips to the theater and hurting box-office totals. Who is spending money at the movies? Women, and movies aimed at women are reaping the benefits. So, you know, any time you want to get on that Black Widow movie, Marvel…

Not only does the data show that young people in general are going to the theater less with the largest drop (17%) occurring in the sought-after 18 to 25 demographic, but it indicates that movies that skew toward a male audience are performing worse than ever. That’s a big problem for Hollywood, considering that their male-oriented franchises seem to be garnering less female viewers than ever, too.

Could they be tired of seeing white dudes save the world? It certainly seems like it, as over time from Spider-Man 3 to Amazing Spider-Man 2, the webhead audience has gone from 54 to 61% male, and the Transformers movies have been following that trend with a now 64% male audience. In the old wisdom, that would’ve been great news, because those demographics were thought of as an endless fountain of money and numbers like those would’ve been seen as evidence that “girls don’t like sci-fi/comic book/[insert genre here] movies.”

But with both of the most recent entries in those franchises also hitting franchise-low domestic gross numbers, it’s well past time to rethink that and work on bringing back the female audience. The male audience isn’t cutting it, and women are getting tired of movies that don’t speak to them or accurately represent them.

This all might seem like a no-brainer in the year that Frozen (technically 2013, but still) made a staggering $1.27 billion worldwide and $400 million domestically, and Maleficent made $224 million domestically—more than Amazing Spider-Man 2. Not to mention The Fault in Our Stars, which had an 82% female audience at opening and has made $120 million on a much smaller budget: only $12 million as compared to $150 million and up for Frozen and the rest.

Hopefully this all means that Hollywood will realize they need to turn the trend around with more movies aimed at women and better representation of women in movies that aren’t.

One of the most visible leaders of the Donetsk People's Republic, Denis Pushilin, has resigned his post during a visit to Moscow, Shaun Walker (@shaunwalker7) reports, citing Russian agencies. No reason for the decision was given

According to Interfax, Pushilin is in Moscow and sent a letter of resignation from his position as speaker of the DPR's parliamentary body.

NEW YORK -- CNN has removed correspondent Diana Magnay from covering the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after she tweeted that Israelis who were cheering the bombing of Gaza, and who had allegedly threatened her, were “scum.”

“After being threatened and harassed before and during a liveshot, Diana reacted angrily on Twitter,” a CNN spokeswoman said in a statement to The Huffington Post.

“She deeply regrets the language used, which was aimed directly at those who had been targeting our crew," the spokeswoman continued. "She certainly meant no offense to anyone beyond that group, and she and CNN apologize for any offense that may have been taken.”

The spokeswoman said Magnay has been assigned to Moscow.

Magnay appeared on CNN Thursday from a hill overlooking the Israel-Gaza border. While she reported, Israelis could be heard near her cheering as missiles were fired at Gaza.

After the liveshot, Magnay tweeted: “Israelis on hill above Sderot cheer as bombs land on #gaza; threaten to ‘destroy our car if I say a word wrong’. Scum.” The tweet was quickly removed, but not before it had been retweeted more than 200 times.

The removal of Magnay comes a day after NBC News pulled Ayman Mohyeldin from Gaza.

NBC's decision to remove the widely praised Mohyeldin, and unwillingness to explain why, has been met with anger and frustration from journalists inside and outside the network.

A source with knowledge of the decision told The Huffington Post that NBC executives cited security concerns. But at the same time Moyheldin was pulled, NBC assigned chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel to Gaza.

One of Mohyeldin's tweets and Facebook posts were recently deleted, a move that has fueled speculation that his social media use could have been the cause for his removal. But the source said the reason given internally by network executives was security.
