The Smallest Horse in Britain Acts More Like a Dog Than A Horse

by Lori Dorn

A tiny dwarf horse named Acer, believed to be the smallest steed in Britain, acts more like a dog than a horse. Aside from the fact that his best friend is canine, Acer has full run of the house at the farm where he lives and goes for daily walks on a leash with his human Maureen O’Sullivan around his Corringham, England neighborhood.

The three-year-old sleeps in a small stable, plays in the field and even wanders around the family home. The little equine is best friends with a Labrador called Demon, who stands inches taller than the tiny horse. Acer was born with a rare condition called dwarfism, which means he didn’t grow properly in the womb.

The most popular university major in the US leads to the least fulfilling work

by Max Nisen

College students flock to business, by far the most popular undergraduate major in the US, and after graduating, the MBA is the most popular advanced degree. It’s not hard to see why: Business training helps students finding jobs right out of school and higher salaries.

But a lot of those business majors also seem to be pretty miserable in those jobs, according to a new poll from Gallup and Purdue. When Gallup asked whether business majors were “interested” in their careers, far fewer than half said they were:

Share
Tap image to zoom

They also come in last—and under 50%—in Gallup’s measure of “purpose well-being,” defined as “people liking what they do each day and being motivated to achieve their goals.” Relatively recent graduates are even worse off:

Share
Tap image to zoom

Even those with postgraduate business degrees (which usually means an MBA) report substantially less career interest and “purpose well-being” than their peers who chose a different field. The poll is a reminder that while a job might be easier to find with a business degree, that job might be one where you’re trudging through the day just for a paycheck.

And business majors actually weren’t even the ones that reported feeling most financially secure: More science and engineering majors reported that they were thriving financially. But there is some good news for business majors: While computer scientists may make the most money right out of school, business is a more lucrative path in the long run. The 95th percentile of business majors (including graduate degrees) in terms of salary make $4.23 million over a lifetime, compared to $3.93 million for computer science majors, according to data collected by The Hamilton Project.

You're Probably Paying an Unfair Amount of Property Tax. Here's a Helpful Map!

by Dirk VanderHart
firehose

"In order to provide some tax relief, the measure largely decoupled your property tax bill from current market values. Instead, it set your bill at 90 percent of your home's market value in 1995-96, and made it so it could only rise at a maximum of 3 percent a year—twee beer bars or no.

And it worked! Oregonians were paying less tax. But Measure 50 created some serious problems too. One biggie, March says, is that the market value on the books for 1995-96 wasn't always a true reflection of the property's value. Whole swaths of the state may have been locked in at values under their actual worth—with a big limit on how quickly they could increase. It's complicated, and there's a lot more, but the upshot is that progressive Oregon is doing a very bad job of fairly spreading the property tax burden. "
...
"Our property tax system is horribly inequitable, with people in some of the county's poorest areas paying taxes vastly out of step with people in more well-to-do areas. What's that look like? Check out this map in the new report, which examines how property taxes for homes might change if they were anchored in a property's market value (which is not how it works now; I'll get to that in a second).

So if homeowners' property taxes were tied strictly to market value, folks in the well-gentrified areas in inner NE/SE would expect to see their taxes rise—in some cases considerably. And people in Gresham and Fairview, where the gelato shops and twee beer bars have been slower to proliferate, would see some pretty solid relief (as would people in East Portland and the West Hills)."

If property taxes were based on real values, more than 140,000 residential properties would see a tax decrease of at least 5%, while more than 43,000 properties would see an increase of at least 15%. More than 10,000 commercial properties and 1,500 multifamily properties would see an increase of at least 15%. Nearly 90% of industrial properties would see a decrease of more than 15%. In the 5 ZIP codes with the lowest income, 93% of residential properties would decrease. But also, in the 5 ZIP codes with the HIGHEST incomes, 73% of residential properties WOULD STILL SEE A TAX DECREASE.

The biggest residential increases (and smallest commercial increases) would be in the inner SE (specifically north of SE Powell and west of SE 52nd) and the heavily gentrified parts of the NE (north of NE Broadway and west of NE 42nd). The biggest decreases would be about 90% of Gresham, all of Fairview and Wood Village, and western Troutdale.

Nearly every part of the Portland metro would see the largest commercial tax increases except for the parts along the Columbia River closest to the bridge to Vancouver.

Our house would probably increase by at least 5% (about $270/year) but could increase more than 15% (at least $810/year). There's a slim chance it could change less than 5% or even decrease by as much as 5%, but no houses on our street qualify to decrease by any more than 5%.

As the Multnomah County auditor, Steve March mostly concerns himself, understandably, with county business. He's looked at the sheriff's troubles with overtime and the county's overspending on cell phones. And he even created a helpful tool to let you know whether anyone in county government was taking those recommendations seriously.

Now March has widened his lens rather significantly. The interactive report the Multnomah County Auditor's Office released yesterday isn't concerned with misspending in the Multnomah Building—it's taking on the state constitution. March is preaching the woes of Oregon's oft-maligned property tax structure. More importantly, his staff has waded through mounds of data to give you an idea why you should care.

The short answer: Our property tax system is horribly inequitable, with people in some of the county's poorest areas paying taxes vastly out of step with people in more well-to-do areas. What's that look like? Check out this map in the new report, which examines how property taxes for homes might change if they were anchored in a property's market value (which is not how it works now; I'll get to that in a second).

And here's what all those colors mean.

So if homeowners' property taxes were tied strictly to market value, folks in the well-gentrified areas in inner NE/SE would expect to see their taxes rise—in some cases considerably. And people in Gresham and Fairview, where the gelato shops and twee beer bars have been slower to proliferate, would see some pretty solid relief (as would people in East Portland and the West Hills).

"This is gonna change at some point," March said yesterday as we went over the report in his office. "It's gotten so inequitable I believe it violates the equal protection clause of the federal constitution."

The fault, in March and many other people's eyes, lies largely in Measure 50, the 1997 switch that fundamentally changed how Oregon properties are taxed.

In order to provide some tax relief, the measure largely decoupled your property tax bill from current market values.

It's not just homeowners, obviously. By March's estimation, the bulk of industrial properties in the county should be paying less property tax. And most commercial property owners should be paying far more. Apartment buildings, too.

Go to the report if you're curious how your neighborhood—even your street—stacks up.

It's not clear how these scenarios play out in other parts of the state, and March makes clear he's not advocating any specific tax plan. But he says our system needs to be tied more-closely to a piece of land's actual value on the market. And he felt he should say something, even if it is a touch out of step with the usual duties of a county auditor.

"When a state issue impacts county residents so significantly, it's important to speak up," he says. "And, more importantly, to show data."

Geeking Out on Early Apple Prototypes

by Wm.™ Steven Humphrey
firehose

meanwhile, in Portland

PORTLANDER JIM ABELES is the proud owner of "the world's largest collection of Apple prototypes"—many of which will be on display for Design Week in an exhibit appropriately called Apple Prototype Collection: An Exhibit of Unreleased Apple Products. While the name might come off as a bit clinical, for those who grew up on Apple products, it's an entertaining trip down memory lane, as well as a very interesting peek at "what might have been." The former owner of a small Mac-based software company here in Portland, Abeles has been collecting the prototypes since 2002, and has built a collection 200 pieces strong. He was nice enough to geek out with us on the subject.

MERCURY: Is your collection really "the world's largest" collection of Apple prototypes?

JIM ABELES: It's the largest I know of. There's one guy in Japan and another in Russia who are rumored to have epic Apple collections, including rare prototypes. I've made contact with the guy in Japan, but he wasn't very communicative. And the Russian guy is pretty secretive. That all sounds way more intriguing than the reality of three nerds competing with each other to collect as many Apple rarities as possible.

What got you interested in collecting Apple prototypes?

When I started collecting, it was kind of a nostalgia thing. The first computer I used regularly was a Macintosh Plus. And the first one I owned was an SE—which was a college graduation gift from my parents. Over the years, I regretted selling it. Well, one of the guys I worked with knew I was looking for an old SE and one day he walked into the office with one and handed it to me. He told me it was for sale for one dollar at a Macintosh swap meet. The best part was how he proudly told me he waited until the end of the night and the seller accepted his offer of 50 cents.

Google reportedly tried to buy Cyanogen

by Ron Amadeo
firehose

"Cyanogen Inc. declined the offer, saying that it was still growing"

A report from The Information (subscription required) claims that Google tried to buy Cyanogen, Inc, the maker of the custom Android ROM CyanogenMod. According to the report, Cyanogen's chief executive told shareholders that Sundar Pichai, the head of Chrome and Android at Google, met with the company and "expressed interest in acquiring the firm." The report says Cyanogen Inc. declined the offer, saying that it was still growing.

It's unclear what Google would want to do with Cyanogen. The company basically does the same software work any other OEM does: it takes AOSP, customizes it, and ports it to devices. It doesn't have a ton of features that replicate Google services, so without a Google Play license, it's just as poor as any other AOSP-derived Android distribution. Buying Cyanogen would give Google an in-house Android distribution and a team of engineers, both of which it already has in abundance. We suppose the plan could be to buy it and shut it down, but we're not sure what that would accomplish, either.

The primary feature of CyanogenMod is that it's close to stock Android and ported to tons of devices. There's no special sauce there that Google would need, and CyanogenMod is "barely generating any revenue," according to the report.

End of an Era: After a 30 Year Run, IBM Drops Support For Lotus 1-2-3

by timothy
klubar writes Although it has been fading for years, the final death knell came recently for the iconic Lotus 1-2-3. In many ways, Lotus 1-2-3 launched the PC era (and ensured the Apple II success), and once was a serious competitor for Excel (and prior to that Multiplan and VisiCalc). Although I doubt if anyone is creating new Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets, I'm sure there are spreadsheets still being used who trace their origin to Lotus 1-2-3, and even Office 2013 still has some functions and key compatibility with Lotus 1-2-3. Oh, how far the mighty have fallen.

New OS X Backdoor Malware Roping Macs Into Botnet

by timothy

"it gets the IP address of a valid command and control (C&C) server from a post on popular news site Reddit"

An anonymous reader writes New malware targeting Mac machines, opening backdoors on them and roping them into a botnet currently numbering around 17,000 zombies has been spotted. The malware, dubbed Mac.BackDoor.iWorm, targets computers running OS X and makes extensive use of encryption in its routines, Dr. Web researchers noted. What's even more interesting is that it gets the IP address of a valid command and control (C&C) server from a post on popular news site Reddit. The malware is capable of discovering what other software is installed on the machine, opening a port on it, and sending a query to a web server to acquire the addresses of the C&C servers.

all carriers suck forever

SEATTLE—On Friday night, I showed up at the predetermined location just a few blocks from a Seattle pier. I hopped some shrubs, showed up at the keypad-locked door, and waited for my insider, Dave, to grant me access, all the while remembering our agreed-upon story: I was a paralegal, and we had recently met playing pick-up basketball. "Let's keep it simple," he'd told me over the phone earlier that day.

This all seemed like overkill, just to sneak me into an apartment pizza party, but my anonymous source was a little nervous. The party was being hosted by Comcast. Was he overdue on his bill or something?

"My building is a little weird about these residents-only events," Dave explained as he let me in. Then he added, "I don't use Comcast, anyway."

After Dallas Ebola Diagnosis, CDC Raises Estimate of Patient's Possible Contacts

by timothy

Texas

As reported by Bloomberg News, The Washington Post, and other outlets, the Liberian patient whose diagnosis of Ebola infection marks him as the first such case to have been first diagnosed within the United States may have had contact with more people than previously estimated, and 80 people in the Dallas area are now believed to have come into contact with him. While Bloomberg reports that this larger group of potential contacts is "being monitored for symptoms," the Washington Post's slightly later story says that, in keeping with the best current knowledge about Ebola's spread, "Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Zachary Thompson said that these [newly identified contacts] are not being watched or monitored and are not showing any symptoms of the illness. Only the immediate family members of the victim are being regularly monitored for Ebola symptoms; they've been ordered to stay at home and avoid contact with others."

Cowboys DB C.J. Spillman under investigation for sexual assault, per report

by Jason Hirschhorn

this fucking league

"Spillman's alleged assault occurred on Sept. 20 at the the hotel the Cowboys were staying at. That was one day after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's heavily criticized press conference regarding its discipline of Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson. Spillman was allowed to suit up for the Cowboys the following day in a game against the St. Louis Rams, although it's not made clear if Dallas knew of the allegations at that time."

Another NFL player is accused of assaulting a woman.

Dallas Cowboys defensive back C.J. Spillman is under police investigation for an alleged sexual assault, according to a report by NY Daily News.

"We have a sexual assault report we are investigating at this time, and it does involve C.J. Spillman," said Sgt. Robert Eberling, a police spokesman via the NY Daily News. "He is involved in the investigation. We are looking into the matter."

According to the report, Spillman's alleged assault occurred on Sept. Louis Rams, although it's not made clear if Dallas knew of the allegations at that time.

The NY Daily News noted that civil rights attorney Gloria Allred sent a letter to Goodell on Sept. 26 stating she represented a woman who alleged a NFL player had raped her. The letter to the NFL and the report from the NY Daily News does not confirm whether Spillman was the NFL player involved. Allred declined comment. In the letter she said the player and a team official met with police on the day of the alleged incident and the player played the next day.

Goodell has stated that "the same mistakes can never be repeated," promising that the league will get its "house in order." The National Organization for Women has called for the commissioner to resign, a demand that others have echoed. As part of its attempt to correct its issues, the NFL hired former FBI Director Robert Mueller to investigate its handling of the Rice controversy.

The 28-year-old Spillman is in his first season with the Cowboys after spending the last four years in San Francisco.

Riot Games was established in 2006 by entrepreneurial gamers who believe that player-focused game development can result in great games. In 2009, Riot released its debut title League of Legends to critical and player acclaim. As the most played video game in the world, over 67 million play every month. Players form the foundation of our community and it’s for them that we continue to evolve and improve the League of Legends experience.

We’re looking for humble but ambitious, razor-sharp professionals who can teach us a thing or two. We promise to return the favor. Like us, you take play seriously; you’re passionate about games. We embrace those who see things differently, aren’t afraid to experiment, and who have a healthy disregard for constraints.

That’s where you come in.

As Lead User Experience Designer, you’ll work with other senior leaders to shape Riot’s overall UX strategy, building best practices backed by meticulous research and guiding UX Designers on interdisciplinary projects to establish a holistic, consistent user experience. You’ll use your collaboration and interpersonal skills to build relationships with stakeholders, establishing a strong UX vision and evangelizing user experience design. You’ll also push the boundaries of your craft by exploring the latest emerging trends and concepting solutions hand-tailored to player and business needs.

YOU ARE:

  •  A UX veteran: you’ve racked up at least seven years’ UX experience, preferably in a mix of enterprise and start-up environments; you’re a seasoned design strategy veteran with a strong awareness of emerging trends and how they apply to brand and product planning
  • A design maverick: you’re fluent in UXD best practices and have the critical thinking skills to know when it’s time to defenestrate them in favor of something unorthodox; in other words, you know the rules and know when to break them
  • A prudent planner: you’ve built a strong design portfolio by applying user-centered design practices to product discovery, design, and development; you’ve demonstrated experience successfully scoping, planning and executing projects as part of an agile dev team
  • A thought leader: you’re a proven leader with experience developing and managing significant user experience design projects and coaching other UX designers; you’re a thought-leader inside and outside your discipline, and when you’re not facilitating design efforts, you’re evangelizing them
  • Data-driven: you build UX strategies based on a strong foundation of data, and use quantitative analytics and user research to inform designs principles
  • Player-focused: you use a combination of research and your understanding of game culture to empathize with players and develop strategies and best practices tailored to their needs; major bonus points if you’re already a summoner in the League of Legends community

YOU WILL:

  • Work with UX Directors to define and develop UX strategy and experiential quality standards for multi-disciplinary product teams; guide UX Designers across multiple product teams to ensure holistic UX quality and consistency are carried throughout every aspect of the product
  • Collaborate with other Lead UX Designers and UX Directors to share knowledge, set realistic goals and seek out challenges and experimental opportunities; mentor and grow less experienced UX Designers, helping them tackle new challenges that level up their skills
  • Establish collaborative relationships with product management partners and other key team members; you know UX can't succeed in isolation, especially in a highly collaborative, cross-functional Agile environment like Riot
  • Lead by example, diving in to get your hands dirty executing deliverables that demonstrate experience strategy when needed (experience models, prototypes, wireframes, whiteboard sketches, etc.)

Inside the International House of Prayer

by Josh Marshall
firehose

via overbey

Today we're publishing a fascinating, troubling investigation into something called the "International House of Prayer", the center of a charismatic Christian movement located just outside of Kansas City. It is a hive of young believers with branches across the world and a theology with a world-leaders-murdering Jesus which many evangelicals claim is distorting Christianity or even heretical. The movement has admirers and severe detractors within the broader charismatic and evangelical movements. And it has thrived on reputation for a less "muted", more radical and heroic version of the Christian message. One sermon, since removed from the group's website, speaks of the power of members' prayers which will soon bring a day "when every head of state in the United Nations will be killed by the prayers of the saints answered in person by Jesus."

The founder and leader is "prophet" Mike Bickle. And despite the extreme views on virtually everything, Bickle's movement put deep roots down into the right-wing of the Republican party, with ties to top leaders like Govs. Sam Brownback, Rick Perry, Mike Huckabee and many others. AIPAC has also partnered with one of the group's key members, despite a theology which claims Jews are consumed with hatred of Jesus which will soon change on a dime as the Israeli Knesset embraces Jesus as the world hurtles toward its end.

Reporter Sarah Posner looks at IHOP's activities in Kansas City, Uganda, Jerusalem and other global locales and the internal strain of authoritarianism which gives IHOP many of the characterized many of us would associate with a cult. The organization 'prayer warriors' are made up of idealistic young people who serve as "interns" at the Kansas City headquarters and are often convinced to forego college and other planning for the future in light of imminent end of the world.

The piece is part of our TPMPrime longform series, so it's published for Prime members only. But we've put a sizable chunk of the piece available to all readers. So even if you're not a Prime subscriber there's enough to read which you'll find fascinating and likely appalling. Click here to read "A TPM Investigation: The International House of Prayer."

Further down, Pebble advertises the seven day battery life of its smart watches. "Why measure battery life in days? 'Cuz we can." This is a reference to the poor battery life seen in other smart watches, including Samsung's Galaxy Gear and the Moto 360, both of which last less than a day before requiring a charge.

Though Apple has not announced battery life of the Apple Watch, rumors have suggested that it will last for about a day, requiring nightly charging. It is likely, however, that the company is continuing to make tweaks to improve battery as much as it can, which is why no specific information on battery has been released.

Pebble also touts its customizability and its relatively low cost while poking a bit of fun at some of Apple's Apple Watch statements. "Overpriced trophy watch wasn't on our to-do list," reads the site. "Pebble is made by real people, for real people keeping it real," it says, wrapping up with the following statement: "Just to recap, we made a watch. We didn't solve global warming."

In addition to highlighting the capabilities of the product with sly references to the Apple Watch, Pebble has also announced plans to cut the prices of both the Pebble and the Pebble Steel. The standard Pebble watch now retails for $99, while the more recently introduced Pebble Steel retails for $199. Both options are quite a bit more affordable than the Apple Watch, which is said to start at a price of $349.

Pebble has also introduced new health and fitness capabilities for Pebble devices. Following an update, Pebble users are now able to track activity non-stop and monitor their sleep habits. Additionally, Pebble watches will be available in more retail locations, including Sam's Club, Fry's Electronics, and more.

Intel buckles to anti-feminist campaign by pulling ads from gaming site
Intel has pulled an advertising campaign from video gaming website Gamasutra after it reportedly received a number of complaints from self-identified gamers upset that the site was championing fair gender representation in video games. The decision by the world’s largest chipmaker to remove its advertising from the site comes as a result of a coordinated campaign called Operation Disrespectful Nod, apparently orchestrated by supporters of the #GamerGate hashtag, who rail against so-called “social justice warrior” writers, journalists, and developers.
