Critical XSS Flaws Patched In WordPress and Popular Plug-In

by timothy
itwbennett writes The WordPress development team on Thursday released critical security updates that address an XSS vulnerability in the comment boxes of WordPress posts and pages. An attacker could exploit this flaw to create comments with malicious JavaScript code embedded in them that would get executed by the browsers of users seeing those comments. 'In the most obvious scenario the attacker leaves a comment containing the JavaScript and some links in order to put the comment in the moderation queue,' said Jouko Pynnonen, the security researcher who found the flaw.

Google's Project Loon Can Now Launch Up To 20 Balloons Per Day, Fly 10x Longer

by timothy
An anonymous reader writes Google [Thursday] shared an update from Project Loon, the company's initiative to bring high-speed Internet access to remote areas of the world via hot air balloons. Google says it now has the ability to launch up to 20 of these balloons per day. This is in part possible because the company has improved its autofill equipment to a point where it can fill a balloon in under five minutes. This is a major achievement, given that Google says filling a Project Loon balloon with enough air so that it is ready for flight is the equivalent of inflating 7,000 party balloons.

Why Nikola Tesla Is A Hero To Men's Rights Activists

firehose

'"Our civilization will sink to a state like that which is found among the bees, ants and other insects—a state wherein the male is ruthlessly killed off," Tesla said. "In this matriarchal empire which will be established the female rules. As the female predominates, the males are at her mercy. The male is considered important only as a factor in the general scheme of the continuity of life."

Today, websites like the infamously terrible Return of Kings describe Tesla's predictions about the subjugation of men as "disturbingly accurate," while some men on Reddit call him a prophet — a vindication of their warped worldview where women dominate and oppress men in all aspects of society.'

Nikola Tesla is celebrated as a genius who had an amazing ability to envision the future. He predicted cellphones, television, and even elements of the internet long before any of these things existed. But he also had some weird ideas about the social issues of tomorrow. Which is why he's become an unlikely hero in the so-called Men's Rights community of today.

Jennifer Gable, an Idaho customer service coordinator for Wells Fargo, died suddenly Oct. 9 on the job at age 32. An aneurysm, according to stunned friends. Just as shocking, they say, when they went to Gable’s funeral in Twin Falls, Idaho, and saw her in an open casket — hair cut short, dressed in a suit and presented as a man.

ESPN Suspends Keith Law From Twitter For Defending Evolution [UPDATE]

by gguillotte

'ESPN has responded with a statement:

Keith's Twitter suspension had absolutely nothing to do with his opinions on the subject.'

Heavy-tweetin' ESPN baseball writer Keith Law has been noticeably silent for the last couple of days. That's no coincidence—he's been given a Twitter timeout by ESPN, and we're told that it's for loudly and repeatedly defending Charles Darwin from transitional fossil Curt Schilling, his Bristol colleague. Schilling, the former pitcher who rejoined ESPN as a baseball analyst in September after eight months away to deal with mouth cancer, took to Twitter on Nov. 12 to rail against evolution and in favor of creationism.

Double Fine lays off staff as unannounced project falls through

by Colin Campbell

Double Fine today laid off a dozen staff members, blaming the loss of a deal for an unannounced project, according to GamesIndustry.

"One of our unannounced projects was unexpectedly cancelled by its publisher, forcing us to reduce our staff by 12 people," said company founder Tim Schafer. "Our remaining projects, Broken Age (pictured), Massive Chalice, and Grim Fandango Remastered, were unaffected."

San Francisco-based Double Fine is best known for the likes of Costume Quest and The Cave, released through traditional publishers, but also self-published and crowd-financed projects like Broken Age and Massive Chalice.

Flight 93 Seedpod Memorial, Shanksville, Pennsylvania

by hodad

Lost in the media glare surrounding the nearby Flight 93 National Memorial is this oddity, unveiled only eight months after the crash in front of Shanksville-Stoneycreek School. It's a 7.5-foot-tall cluster of metal seedpods-on-stalks that have human hands bulging out of them -- a pleasing blend of Alien and Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

The unnamed memorial was the brainstorm of Cornell Companies Inc., a Texas-based builder and operator of private prisons (At the time, Cornell was trying to get permission from Pennsylvania to build a federal prison in Clearfield County). According to a company press release, the memorial was meant to honor all of the students and adults at Shanksville-Stoneycreek School who pitched in and helped in the aftermath of the crash, which happened just a mile away. "Cornell could not let this display of heroism become a mere footnote to the history of the larger event."

Flight 93 Seedpod Memorial.

The corporation picked Jan Loney, a local metal artist, to build the sculpture. She in turn enlisted students, faculty, and even janitors and lunch ladies from the school to press their hands into modeling clay, then transferred the handprints onto the seedpods.

The completed memorial was dedicated with much fanfare on May 17, 2002. Shanksville-Stoneycreek School invited President George W. Bush to attend; he didn't, but the Pennsyvania Director of Homeland Security did.

The memorial was supposed to be surrounded by nine large stones, each inscribed with an inspiring quote, including the then-ubiquitous "Let's Roll!" and one from President Bush. If they were ever set in place, they're gone now. The only stone that remains is one crediting the sculpture to Cornell Companies Inc.

meanwhile, in Portland

Lewis & Clark College administrators have launched an investigation and are restricting students' access to campus dorms after discovering racially charged anonymous comments on social media. The comments on Yik Yak, an online app that works like an anonymous message board, came in response to another user who posted a reminder Nov. 14 about a campus conversation about race planned for that night. One respondent posted an image of a gun. Another wrote "you're letting coloreds in the chapel now?" It's the latest in a string of threatening Yik Yak posts that have resulted in school disciplinary actions or criminal cases since the app launched last year.

“By early Friday morning Handler expanded that to a bigger admission: “My remarks on Wednesday night at #NBAwards were monstrously inappropriate and yes, racist.” He added, “It would be heartbreaking for the #NBAwards conversation to focus on my behavior instead of great books. So can we do this?” Handler pledged a minimum gift of $10,000 to the Indie GoGo Campaign for #WeNeedDiverseBooks, and said he will match contributions over the next 24 hours up to $100,000. (“I’m in for $10,000, and matching your money for 24 hours up to $100,000.”) Within the first couple of hours, that pledge drew over $10,000 in individual donations towards the matching goal.”

After Jacqueline Woodson accepted the National Book Award in young people’s literature for her memoir Brown Girl Dreaming last night, host Daniel Handler shared a “joke” about her with the audience: she’s allergic to watermelon. Get it? Because she’s black. You can feel the tension in the room through your screen.

fuck your racist ass fave

WHAT

I looked up the source link and then went to Handler’s twitter! He’s apologized, admitted the jokes were racist, and is now donating money to We Need Diverse Books.

WHAT THE FUCK tho I’m still pissed

Mary:

So am I but at least he’s admitted to it unlike most celebrities…still mad though.

ETA: He’s donated $10,000 AND is matching donations up to $100,000!!! SO if you were planning on donating to WNDB this is the time to do it because every dollar you put in will be doubled by Handler.

Netflix picks up Tina Fey's first show since '30 Rock'

by Ross Miller
firehose

huh

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Tina Fey and Robert Carlock's first show since they made 30 Rock together, was supposed to be coming to NBC this Spring. That is, until tonight: Netflix just announced that it has picked up the show for two seasons and will premiere the 13-episode season this March in all Netflix territories. Kimmy Schmidt stars Ellie Kemper as the survivor of a doomsday cult who starts over in New York (Fey, notably, is not billed a regular cast member).

Somewhat surprisingly, NBC seems very supportive of the move. This is NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt:

"When the opportunity arose for Tina Fey and Robert Carlock to premiere their new show on Netflix with a two-season commitment, we decided this was the best possible scenario to launch this captivating new series. While it was originally developed for NBC, we have a very drama-heavy mid-season schedule so we're thrilled about this Netflix opportunity; it's an instant win-win for everyone, including Tina, Robert, and Universal Television. We're already talking to these extraordinary creators about new development for NBC, but meanwhile, everyone here from Universal Television will do everything possible to see that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt becomes a long-running hit on Netflix."
