Sony terminates FIFA sponsorship amid ongoing corruption probe

by Owen S. Good

Sony has ended a 10-year sponsorship with FIFA that had put PlayStation's name on the pitch for the previous two World Cups.

The console maker says it opted out because of anticipated rising sponsorship costs. Still, the abandoned partnership comes as football's world governing body is under attack for the bribed awarding of World Cup bids to Russia for 2018 and Qatar in 2022.

Earlier this month. FIFA released an abridged report of an investigation into the bribery surrounding the Russian and Qatari World Cup bids, which formally cleared FIFA, Qatari and Russian officials while chastising England's bid committee. The lead investigator himself then challenged FIFA's version of his report as "incomplete and erroneous." FIFA later asked Switzerland's attorney general to open a criminal investigation into the matter.

Even more problematic for FIFA and its affiliates is the fact that Qatar is using slave labor from South Asia, and even from North Korean prisons, to build its venues, and that the death toll from that construction is expected to exceed 3,000 by the time the event is staged.

Sony's sponsorship of FIFA was estimated at $277 million, according to Nikkei, and was a sponsor representing "digital life," one of six "major fields" from which FIFA had sought a partnership. Samsung is rumored as a possible successor.

FIFA has exclusively licensed Electronic Arts' globally dominant, award-winning football video game simulation since 1993.

Someone Made a Video of The Count Counting Pi to 10,000 Decimal Places

Here's a weird little corner of the internet for you to devour. YouTube user Crysknife007 is well-known for hours-long sci-fi marathons of idling starship engines or the silent ambience of Rick Deckard's apartment . But this time, we get our favorite numbers-addicted Muppet counting Pi up to 10,000 decimal places.

Odell Beckham Jr. can kick ball-spinning trick field goals

by James Dator

Is there anything Odell Beckham Jr. can't do? A week hasn't passed since he made one of the best catches of all time, now he's showing up kickers around the league by spinning to the football on its end and driving it through. By the end of the season Beckham Jr. will be playing every position for the Giants.

Watch out Eli.

Sometimes I see parents riding the subway with kids on leashes. I guess it's so the kids don't run away and get lost. And I guess the Patriots are worried Tom Brady will run away and get lost:

Can't be too careful out there.

The Millennium Falcon Satellite Dish

nerdology:

Here’s a thing I noticed while watching the Star Wars trailer yesterday. The Falcon has a new satellite dish. Below you can see what it used to look like (taken from A New Hope) and what it looks like in The Force Awakens.

It’s completely different. At first I thought “that’s a weird thing to change, but OK, the Falcon got an upgrade since Return of the Jedi.” And then I remembered:

Oh right. It needed a new satellite dish.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Star John Boyega Dismissed Critics Of Black Stormtroopers The Way They Should Be Dismissed - Get used to it.

by Alanna Bennett

Ian quote

Screen Shot 2014-11-30 at 8.55.36 AM

We didn’t start out in a super stellar place with The Force Awakens. When J.J. Abrams & Co. first announced the casting for Star Wars: Episode VII (as it was referred to back then), the glaring whiteness of it all grated on many who are understandably tired of spaces which could be so easily not-white being so heavily, and often nonsensically, whitewashed. Which is why it was a pretty pleasant surprise when, upon the release of The Force Awakens‘ first trailer, literally everyone we saw the face of was either a female or a person of color. In the words of Michael Scott, “oh, how the turntables.”

And so of course people are already complaining.

More specifically, people are complaining about there being a black stormtrooper. Oh, and also that there are women and people of color present because EGADS, it can only go downhill from here if we haven’t seen the white dudes yet:

I have a feeling the new Star Wars is going to be filled with PC, SJW trash.

— Reactionary Radec (@T_S_Blackwell) November 28, 2014

Interesting that the first characters revealed in that trailer are a black man and a woman. Some of the comments are calling JJ an “SJW”. — Ian Miles Cheong (@stillgray) November 28, 2014

“SJW” here standing for, of course, “social justice warrior.” “Social justice warrior,” of course, standing for people who care about people.

The black stormtrooper complaints seem to be mainly coming through via Youtube comments, which means we should all continue that Internet survival tradition of avoiding Youtube comments at all costs. Instead, let us focus on John Boyega’s A+ response to something he should never have had to deal with in the first place:

With love xxx

A photo posted by @jboyega on

Let us also allow this man to shut down the ugh of it all:

Stormtroopers were all clones of a Maori dude, and Luke and Han wore the outfit once. You’re worried about a “black stormtrooper,” why?

— Jamil Smith (@JamilSmith) November 28, 2014

The “black stormtrooper” is likely not one at all. I’d actually guess that John Boyega is likely the main protagonist. Let that sink in.

— Jamil Smith (@JamilSmith) November 28, 2014

Can you hear that? That is my complete inability to wait for Boyega to become one of the biggest stars in the world.

Nora McInerny and Aaron Purmort lived a very public love story. Buccaneers, Rays took advantage of free homeless labor

by James Brady

The Buccaneers and Rays are just two of the local teams currently taking advantage of free homeless labor, a report from the Tampa Bay Times reveals.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Lightning and Rays are among the local Tampa organizations currently benefiting from free homeless labor, according to a report from Will Hobson of the Tampa Bay Times. New Beginnings is an organization that offers food and shelter to local homeless people, but also uses them on work crews in various situations, none of which they are paid for, according to the report.

These unpaid labor crews are sent to stadiums and arenas for local sports teams and events, where they operate concession stands serving beer and food to fans. At the end of the day, New Beginnings takes the full share of the profits from the work and pays the workers with nothing but the aforementioned shelter and food.

New Beginnings founder and CEO Tom Atchison refers to this as "work therapy," while homeless advocates believe the actions are exploitative, and "possibly illegal." But the issues with the organization extend far beyond the "work therapy," given that these homeless are often working at places that can certainly afford to pay them, according to Hobson's report.

There are accusations that Atchison took the Social Security checks and food stamps of those in his program, even if the total net of those benefits exceeded that of what they owe to be in the program -- typically, $150 a week or $600 a month. Other allegations against Atchison include a lack of actual trained counselors on staff to overbilling the state in grant money.

It's unclear how much the Tampa sports franchises know about New Beginnings or the way a minister close to Atchison referred to its residents "our property." But as much profit as those organizations make, they're still using homeless people for free labor and there's no excuse for that.

'she's dual-wielding her hand cannon, which isn't canon'

Barely a week after Nintendo launched its amiibo lineup, the Samus figure figures to be remembered as one of the weirdest and most coveted on the roster.

First, this video cropped up on Thursday showing Samus' NFC (near field communication) chip messing with the gates on the Moscow metro.

Eurogamer reports that, while the video shows a light turning green as a loud thunk, presumably of a gate, is heard, Samus doesn’t actually mean a free ride on the Moscow tube. In the metro there, the gates appear to be open all the time. A metro card validates it and allows the bearer to pass through. Without the card, the gates slam shut, which could be very uncomfortable for a fast moving fare-beater.

Why else is Samus such a hot toy? Well, get a load of this. Spot anything weird?

That's right, she's dual-wielding her hand cannon, which isn't canon. The production error, reports Nintendo Life, has sent gray market bids soaring as high as $950, currently. These toys start out at $12.99, remember.

Amiibo launched in North America on Nov. 21, and officially launched in Europe on Nov. 28.

Nashville Handles Blocked Roads, Freeways Differently than Portland: Hot Chocolate, Bottled Water, No Arrests

by Denis C. Theriault

It's worth pointing out the experience Nashville has had with Ferguson protesters who were determined to take the streets and even block freeways—even while keeping away from scandalous actions like looting and vandalism, just like in Portland.

A national blog run by a former (and apparently decorated) TV journalist posted a local TV station's footage of a press conference with Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson from a few days ago.

The post summed up the nine-minute interview if you don't want to watch. Essentially, Nashville police didn't challenge protesters who set out to block Interstate 24—even though it was inconvenient for drivers—because Anderson decided a heavy-handed cure would be worse than the illness. The march in Nashville moved on after 25 minutes, instead of hanging around for a longer, tenser standoff with riot cops.

They also handed out hot chocolate and bottled water.

In Portland, police have been blocking off bridges and on-ramps pre-emptively—keeping protesters off of them, denying marchers the satisfaction of claiming infrastructure, but still inconveniencing drivers and achieving protesters' central aim of disruption. Police here on Tuesday also arrested a handful of marchers who surged past mounted patrol officers and riot cops on their way over a barrier onto freeway ramps.

Nashville's chief said he'd been phoned by someone complaining about being delayed, but he said that didn't trump First Amendment expression and suggested the person who complained was overreacting.

Chief Anderson’s police force met protesters with hot chocolate and bottled water, rather than tear gas, marched alongside them, and ran the type of security that one might expect in a civic parade, communicating on an ongoing basis with protest leaders. At one point, protesters charged up an on-ramp and took over Interstate 24 over the objections of Nashville police. Chief Anderson made a controversial real-time decision, opting not to arrest protesters, and ordered officers to shut down I-24 temporarily, allowing demonstrators to make their statement by lying down on the roadway while drivers waited. Consequently, protesters were cleared off the roadway within twenty to twenty-five minutes. Anderson acknowledged that the incident did inconvenience Nashville drivers, but no more so than a car accident or other situation in which police sometimes block the roadway to protect citizens’ safety.

“We could have moved in and made arrests, but to do that you have to do that one by one in a very careful manner… We would have been there two to three hours,” said Chief Anderson, explaining his decision not to arrest protesters for taking over I-24 in comments to WKRN-TV 2. “Last night’s event went very well and I hope that all of Nashville is proud of not only the law enforcement response, but the response of the citizens involved and that we have set an example for the nation.”
