Once upon a time in America, college in many states actually used to be free, or so affordable as to be virtually free. In fact, for many years — dating back to the 19th century — California schools did not even charge tuition. Rather, students would be required to pay a few small student fees at most

That all changed when the Republican governor of California (someone by the name of Ronald Reagan) decided to make college more like a for-profit business. In fact, as governor, Reagan insisted on imposing a new “fee” and that would later become synonymous with tuition, thus ending California’s tradition of providing virtually free education to qualified college students (related article from 1982 here)

Reagan once said, “The state should not subsidize intellectual curiosity" and, more to the point, Reagan is alleged to have once said:  "Why should I continue to pay for their (anti-war protesters) education when they’re just going to turn around and vote against me?"

So in summary, no more tuition free education, because fuck you

In case you haven’t noticed, there is one party advocating things like free, universal pre-k education, and advocating for making the first two years of college tuition free…and on the other hand, there’s another party that’s fighting to obliterate all of that. People can sit there and claim that both parties are the same all they want, but for at least the last 50yrs, it’s always the same “Grand Old Party” that stays sticking to the little guy

Al Sharpton Doesnt Think Younger Activists Have a Movement

by Jamilah King
Al Sharpton Doesn't Think Younger Activists Have a Movement

Al Sharpton had some terribly patronizing and unfortunate things to say about young activists recently in a Washington Post profile. Like this comment in response to his national youth director, Mary-Pat Hector, 17:

"The issue with my generation is we're more about the Occupy organizing model," she told Sharpton now. "You know, everyone can be a leader, that kind of thing."

"I hear them saying that," Sharpton said. " 'We don't want Al Sharpton taking over our movement.' But my question is: What movement? Y'all ain't got nothing to take over."

"They want everything to rise from the ground up," Hector said.

"Fine, okay, but then tell me your strategy," Sharpton said. "You burned the building down. Great. Now what?"

And this:

Is there anyone else who can do all of this? Anyone other than me? Seriously, I'm talking about anyone else?"

This is what Sharpton was asking the next day, back in the hotel conference room, meeting again with the 25 community leaders from his National Action Network. The issue at hand was one Sharpton thought about often: Who, if anyone, was in place to become the next Al Sharpton? He wanted to invite some younger national leaders to join his vigil with the Garners on King Day, but he didn't know whom to invite. "What ever happened to Ben Jealous?" Sharpton asked, referencing the former leader of the NAACP. "How about talented leadership in Chicago? Anyone good coming up behind Jesse in Chicago?"

Naturally, Sharpton's comments have sparked outrage among younger generations of activists.

I. Don't. Hate. Al. Sharpton. The way he performs justice work, however, is dangerous.

Noted: New Logo for Seattle Police Department by DEI Creative

by Armin

Makin' it Rain on the Bad Boys

New Logo for Seattle Police Department by DEI Creative

(Est. 1886) "The Seattle Police Department is the largest Municipal law enforcement agency in Washington State. Seattle Police Department Staffing: 1,820 (approx.)"

Design by: DEI Creative

Opinion/Notes: It's no Studio Dumbar Dutch Police-level work, but it's a certain improvement. At least in functionality. The previous logo was only missing Shawn Kemp from it to be a full picture of what Seattle is. The new logo starts out good with a nice drawing profile of Chief Seattle but it then deteriorates from there with fairly generic typographic that hasn't been fully resolved on how it sits on a curve and the shape of the shield is pretty aleatory. The striped texture could have been cool if it were less subtle and more scalable. Overall, a change in the right direction but it could have used 3 or 5 more rounds of finessing in every aspect.

Related Links: Seattle Police News and Events

Select Quote: SPD's patch and shield were designed 42 years ago. They're based on a design taken from a 1939 Marching Drill team flag. It's meant to represent Seattle and includes the Space Needle, and a nod to Boeing. While it's served us well, the shield is very detailed and is hard to see clearly when scaled down. The color scheme also clashed with the new uniform.

With the change to a new uniform and patrol vehicle, it just made sense to reconsider the entire look of the department.

The new design emphasizes simplicity and improved readability for quick identification, as well as bringing back the symbol of the City of Seattle, the Chief Seattle seal. The new patch keeps our current motto "Service, Pride, Dedication (SPD)."

Pay Attention, Marvel, Selma‘s Ava DuVernay is Open to Doing a Superhero Film - Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes yes.

by Susana Polo

Ava DuVernay admits she’s not expecting a call from Marvel, and even if she got one she’d have to start by even figuring out who Marvel’s characters are. But which would you rather have: someone who loves examining heroes and myths and can admit they have things to learn, or somebody who is totally fine with being the world builder of a superhero universe while seeming dismissive of nerds, confused about character origins, and puzzled by the idea of self-sacrificing heroes?

If Marvel actually made that phone call, DuVernay would be the first woman to direct a feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and she’d be the first director of color to helm a film in its continuity since Ang Lee in 2003. After Selma, the obvious choice from Marvel’s confirmed lineup would be Black Panther, but Captain Marvel and Inhumans are also upcoming origin stories without attached directors that we’d be happy to see DuVernay take. But since she mentioned an origin story, how about Ms. Marvel Kamala Khan?

Actor Michael Keaton and Jimmy Fallon Read Scenes Written by Young Kids Who Were Only Given the Title ‘Birdman’

by Lori Dorn

In the latest episode of The Tonight Show‘s “Kid Theater”, host Jimmy Fallon and actor Michael Keaton, the Oscar-nominated star of the breakout film Birdman, read adorably written scenes by elementary school children who were only given the title “Birdman” and nothing else.

The scenes that you’ll be reading are not from the actual movie. They’re all written by elementary school kids. We gave them no direction, we just gave them the title and we asked them to write a scene based on what they think a movie called “Birdman” would be about.

During a commercial break, the two men talk about trucks and have fun with local station promos.

Of All Things, Netflix is Coming to Cuba Today - Well, at least they beat out McDonalds?

by Victoria McNally

Bienvenida Cuba! Netflix is now available pic.twitter.com/rMocX4Bk73

— Netflix US (@netflix) February 9, 2015

See, this is how to spread democracy or whatever, America—through binge watching Orange is The New Black. Take note, Obama.

As part of their initiative to roll out on a global scale over the next two years, Netflix has announced today they’ll be launching streaming service in Cuba, thus becoming one of the first companies to take advantage of the recently relaxed trade restrictions between Cuba and the United States.

Netflix will offer the same $7.99 monthly rate they do in the United States, though it will still be considered an international purchase and will require a credit or debit card as the payment method. They will be sure to offer all of their original content such as the aforementioned OITNBHouse of Cards, and Marco Polo, family programming like King Julien and The Adventures of Puss in Boots, and Netflix documentaries. Beyond that, their catalog will most likely differ from that of the U.S. and Canada, with a possible focus on Cuban content creators.

“We are delighted to finally be able to offer Netflix to the people of Cuba, connecting them with stories they will love from all over the world,” Netflix co-founder and CEO deed Hastings said in a statement today. “Cuba has great filmmakers and a robust arts culture and one day we hope to be able to bring their work to our global audience of over 57 million members.”

Netflix has been offering services to Lain American viewers since 2011 and now has almost 5 million subscribers there; they also hope to expand to Japan in the fall, and in 2016, to every territory in the world with high speed Internet service.

Wifi Enabled Sheep, Reindeer Could Bring Internet Access to Rural Areas - Real talk: I didn't realize that this picture was sad until I'd already embedded it, I'm so sorry.

by Susana Polo

zzblumsznaptbig

Get with the times Wallace. With that many sheep around you could be reading about Gromit’s life sentence on a tablet. Much less palatable to hungry (and sad) sheep.

The Atlantic has covered an interesting trend in technology professionals and scientists who are trying to extend the networked world further into rural communities, and it involves some of the greatest dreams of android-kind: electric sheep.

Here is an actual quote from a professor from Lancaster University, who specializes in distributed systems: “Sheep can be connected to the Internet or a portion of a river or a tree.”

Okay, so what he means is that sheep collars can easily be made into wifi hotspots, or into small sensors that, in a distributed network across the herd, could monitor pollution for environmental scientists, weather for meteorologists, or herd movements for farmers who want an alert if a dog attacks. But that’s still an amazing sentence.

Additionally, a group of internet-enabled herd animals could be a means of connection to the outside world for nomadic herders. Such solutions have actually been tested with the cooperation of the native Sámi women who make their living herding reindeer in Northern Scandinavia, where the remote, mountainous, environmentally protected terrain makes it difficult to, for example, establish and maintain cell towers.

Five Men Build a Beautiful ‘Icehenge’ Ice Sculpture of Stonehenge on a Frozen Lake in Wisconsin

by E.D.W. Lynch

Icehenge Stonehenge Ice Sculpture in Wisconsin

A group of five Wisconsin men recently built a beautiful ice sculpture of Stonehenge on a frozen lake near the small town of Lake Mills. The sculpture, entitled Icehenge, was built of ice blocks that each weighed about 300 pounds. The group cut the blocks out of the lake with ice saws. It’s not their first attempt at Icehenge–they partially built the sculpture last year but were stymied by subzero temperatures.

Unfortunately it is too late to see Icehenge, as it was taken down due to warm temperatures and safety issues. However Lake Mills-based photographer Eli Wedel took some wonderful photos of the sculpture during its brief existence. The Icehenge group consisted of Lake Mills-area residents Drew McHenry, Kevin Lehner, Quinn Williams, Alec Seamars, and Patrick Shields.

A Series of Illustrations Featuring Every Single Branch of the Toronto Public Library

by Rebecca Escamilla

All the Libraries Toronto

Artist and urban geographer Daniel Rotsztain has visited and drawn every single branch of the Toronto Public Library in a project combining “his love of Toronto, geography, architecture and exploring the city by bike, foot and TTC.” Drawings are regularly posted in the ongoing series All the Libraries Toronto. He also created a handy map of each branch he’s posted.

Rotsztain wrote about why he chose to take on the project.

A lot of people talk about how Toronto is divided, ignoring the things that unify us, like our library system. No matter where I am in this city – Scarborough, Etobicoke, East York, North York, York or the old city of Toronto – I feel at home at the libraries I visit.

Every branch, though familiar, takes on the special characteristics of its neighbourhood. Toronto’s libraries can be found in heritage buildings, storefronts, malls, strip malls and community centres.

Prints are available to purchase on his website and at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival pop-up shop in the Toronto Reference Library.

Yellow Lab Shows His Brother How to Remove His Leash From the Closing Trunk Door So They Can Get to the Park

by Lori Dorn

A clever yellow Lab named Baxter shows his brother Pluto how to get his leash out of the way of the closing trunk door so that they can be on their way to the dog park. According to their human, Baxter figured out how to do this all on his own.

Baxter loves going to the dog park and realized one day that I couldn’t close the trunk with his leash hanging out. One day, he casually pulled it in and my jaw dropped. Obviously, he isn’t willing to wait for Pluto to come to the same realization.

‘Eye of the Waterfall’, A Photo of an Oregon Waterfall That Looks Like a Giant Reptilian Eye

by E.D.W. Lynch

Eye of the Waterfall

Portland, Oregon-based photographer Jarred Decker shot a photo of a waterfall in Oregon’s Silver Falls State Park that looks uncannily like a reptilian eye. He says the eye effect was achieved quite by accident. The photo–which he has entitled “Eye of the Waterfall”–was shot back in November 2014, and prints are available for purchase online.

Canadian court finds Toronto newspaper has libeled a climate scientist

by John Timmer

A Canadian court has found that Toronto's National Post libeled a climate scientist named Andrew Weaver. The paper and several of its writers and editors will be responsible for paying Weaver C$50,000 (about US$39,500) and removing all the libelous pieces from its site, as well as notifying anyone who has republished them. But by quickly removing further libelous comments left by its readers in response to the article, the National Post avoided being held responsible for those as well.

In contrast to US law, the Canadian legal standard for libel is simply that statements must be inaccurate (not "based on facts truly stated"), and they must "tend to lower the plaintiff’s reputation in the eyes of a reasonable person." Put another way by the judge in this case, "While the Supreme Court of Canada is clear about the critical importance of free speech, as noted earlier, this does not provide a roadmap to the individual’s reputation as a 'regrettable but unavoidable road kill on the highway of public controversy.'"

Compared to the statements that prompted a US libel suit by climate scientist Mike Mann, the National Post's articles are quite mild (Mann was compared to a convicted child molester). And the material is standard fare on a variety of sites rum by people skeptical of the scientific establishment, claiming that he manipulated data to make a case for climate change, that he was profiting from the resulting grants, that he was jumping from the sinking ship that is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), that he saw fossil-fuel-industry conspiracies everywhere, and so on.

Nintendo reportedly wanted to make Harry Potter games back in 1998

by Andrew Webster

If Nintendo had its way, Harry Potter might just have been added to its huge cast of iconic video game characters. According to a new report from Unseen64 — a site dedicated to uncovering cancelled, lost, and otherwise unreleased games — at one point Nintendo was itching to secure the exclusive video game rights to the Harry Potter franchise. And in 1998, just a year after the first book was released, Nintendo's American division reportedly put together a pitch in hopes of securing them.

"A week of insanely furious scribbling."

There were apparently two pitches in the works: one based on a fairly standard third-person action game, and another involving the fictional sport of quidditch. The ideas never got past the pitch phase, however. "All together it was only a week of insanely furious scribbling things to the digital artists to create animations for mock game demos," an unnamed artist who worked on the project told Unseen64. That same artist claims that there was some conflict over the art style of the game, with some members of the team wanting to emulate the look of the original book covers, and others striving for a manga-inspired art style more in line with Nintendo's games.

The games never moved beyond that concept phase, and ultimately Warner Bros. won out on the rights to the franchise, with Electronic Arts handling development duties on the earliest Harry Potter games. And while it wasn't made by Nintendo, a quidditch game did eventually launch in 2003. While Nintendo's vision of the Harry Potter universe never materialized, we at least have some early concept art to imagine what it might have been like — and we can now dream about how amazing a Hogwarts-themed Super Smash Bros. level could've been.

The Onion imagines Uber's next luxury service: hijacking

by Lizzie Plaugic

Uber has made its fair share of questionable decisions — from threatening journalists to sabotaging Lyft to launching in cities illegally — but it has yet to go as far as The Onion imagines it could.

Any ride, whenever you want it

In the video above, The Onion does what it does best: takes a plausible occurence about two steps too far and lands on ridiculous comedic gold. The clip's faux newscast introduces Uber's newest high-end car service, Uber Seize, as a luxury option that allows users to stop and hijack nearby vehicles.

An actor playing a senior developer at Uber sounds like he could be the real thing: "Our mission at Uber is to let you take complete control of your transportation." Until he doesn't: "We make sure every one of our drivers can be carjacked at any time, without warning."

“HIFI TUNING DISC DEMAGNETIZER at Music Direct” @musicdirect

by adafruit
firehose

lol

Ahftdd

Oh god, HIFI TUNING DISC DEMAGNETIZER at Music Direct.

Improves Digital Playback, Both Audio and Video

After months of hands-on testing by dedicated audiophiles, HiFi-Tuning has created this latest version of the Disc Demagnetizer, adding a second demagnetization cycle at a different frequency. This makes the HFT Disc Demagnetizermuch more effective than other demagnetizers, yet it costs less, too!
Very Fast, Very Effective

Each demagnetizing cycle on the Disc Demagnetizer takes about 8 seconds. For best results, after the first cycle, flip the disc over and run a second cycle. You will hear greater clarity, focus and a substantially lower noise floor. On video discs, the improvement can be profound, offering stunning improvements to video playback.

Demagnetize a Disc?
We are frequently asked how it’s possible for an aluminum disc to magnetize. The important thing to remember is that just because a disc is nominally made from polycarbonate and aluminum, this does not mean these are the only ingredients. Inks used on the disc label and even the aluminum substrate itself may contain materials that can pick up and store a magnetic charge. This can happen as the disc is moved in and out of the case or even in the CD transport itself as the disc is spun at high speeds. The benefits of demagnetization can be heard on all discs from brand new CD’s to CD-Rs, even DVDs, Blu-Ray and other formats will benefit.

Post in the comments, you know what to do :)
