Magnetie, The Reversible Magnetic Necktie

by EDW Lynch

The Magnetie is a clever necktie that keeps the tail end tucked out of sight with the help of rare earth magnets in the head and tail of the tie. Because the magnets keep the tail and head aligned, the Magnetie does not have a keeper (the loop that is usually on the backside of a tie). This has two added benefits—the tie is reversible, and it is one size fits all.

How to be a Cool Person, A Guide by a Second Grader

by Rusty Blazenhoff

How to be a Cool Person

don’t do your homework on the weekends or on friday…

I’d like to share with you a funny little guide my second grade daughter made which outlines her thoughts on “How to be a Cool Person.” Some of the tips seems to fly in the face of some of the rules I’ve set around here, except, naturally, the ones about frog leaping around the house and doing acrostics.

Sal Gastronomica in São Paulo

Sal Gastronomica in São Paulo

Sick of working in a bank, Henrique Fogaça quit his job and got a burger trailer. After that, he opened a cafe within the courtyard of an art gallery near Paulista Avenue, which is one of the most important thoroughfares of the city of São Paulo. It quickly became a charming and exclusive restaurant called Sal Gastronomia, with haute cuisine from appetizers like the octopus bruschetta to the seared tuna teriyaki with black rice and pupunha palmetto and the skull cake with sauce of berries. In 2012, he created the Mercado, a gastronomic event which happens once a month, bringing together chefs to cook food at affordable prices.

Scripting News: Email with Max Levchin.

A picture named salute.gifA discussion began on Twitter about Google Reader between myself and Max Levchin, and at my request moved over to email. This is the discussion so far.

Max wrote:

  • RSS has a decentralized pub/sub model; the format has been open and stable for a long time; the addressing scheme has no reliance on a specific client. How does the death of one, particularly good even, client, carry with it a threat to the whole ecosystem?

I responded:

  • They weren't just "one client" -- they dominated, in the way that MSIE dominated the browser space. And they did what MSIE did, once they gained dominance they froze development (that might have happened through competition) and stopped moving. Everything that was broken in GR became a feature of RSS. And all the things that should have happened, to mature the market, couldn't happen.
  • Now maybe that's about to change for the better. I hope so. But I'm not encouraged. This is a market where, in order for it to flourish, there HAS to be cooperation among vendors. That's what Twitter proved. Because they control the whole user experience they were able to solve problems that the RSS market couldn't. First, because the vendors wouldn't cooperate, and then because Google took the whole market. So we are now locked into a single vendor -- Twitter.
  • So the way it looks to me is that there are three possible outcomes:
  • 1. GR's demise is also the end of RSS (which seems to me is Google's desired outcome, based on other things they did).
  • 2. A market develops, but we're unable to get the new features into it that simplify the subscription process, so it has a chance re Twitter.
  • 3. A new dominant reader comes about, and if they're good then maybe something good happens.
  • I don't think there's the slightest possibility of #3. People in tech are just too insular, they don't study prior art, or even study their competition enough to know where the problems are, much less what the potential solutions are.
  • I think more likely is a mix between #1 and #2. A continued decline for RSS as an activity and more and more reliance on big companies that don't give a fuck.

Cristina Cordova: How to Hire More Women at Your Startup

firehose

tl;dr:
1) Don’t look for ninjas.
Language such as “rockstar”, “ninja” or even “hacker” will result in fewer female applicants.

2) Make your workplace one that women will enjoy being in.
Don’t be surprised when a woman visits your dirty hacker house and ends up turning down your job offer.

3) Care about culture beyond free beer and chips. Talk about values before freebies: transparency, communication, autonomy, how people interact outside of work, how you decide what you work on and growth within the company.

4) Have women interview women. If your startup is able, have every candidate, regardless of gender, interviewed by a woman on your team — it will help guard against bad hires.

5) Hire well. I’ve heard more than a few bad stories about women that interview at a startup full of men and end up running into your token startup douchebag. You know, the one that says his time is more valuable than others on the team. The one that asks your female engineering candidate if she’d be happier in more of a PM role because she isn’t really a hacker. “He’s just a little aspergersy”, you say. Just one of these guys can make it difficult to hire or retain women at your company.

6) Be conscious of gender differences. Be conscious of how men and women may speak about their work and don’t pass up a resume just because the language used is less results-oriented.

7) Go find them. One day, in about two hours, I put together a list of about 50 prospective female candidates. If you can’t find potential female candidates, you’re just being lazy.

Cristina Cordova: How to Hire More Women at Your Startup:

cristinacordova:

I’ve been asked “How can I hire more women at my startup?” a number of times and while I’ve always had concrete thoughts, I’ve generally wavered on the topic. Most people understand why it’s important to have more women in the workplace (and more diversity in general beyond gender). Yet, most…

Curiosity rover snaps panorama of massive Mars mountain

by Amar Toor
Mars_large

NASA this week released new high-resolution panoramic images of Mars' Mount Sharp, captured by its Mars Rover Curiosity. Named after late geologist Robert Sharp, the massive Martian mountain is a gently sloping formation that sits at the center of the Gale Crater, where Curiosity recently uncovered evidence that the Red Planet may have supported microbial life forms. According to NASA, Mount Sharp rises three miles above the surface of the crater, making it higher than any point within the 48 contiguous United States.

"Simple point: just because Google couldn’t make a business out of a free RSS reader, it does..."

“Simple point: just because Google couldn’t make a business out of a free RSS reader, it does not mean that business models that have a free component do not work, since, obviously, much of the rest of Google’s business is based on offering stuff for free, and monetizing elsewhere. And, similarly, just because you have a paid app, it does not mean that enough people will pay to make a viable business out of it. In both cases, the situations are basically the same: whatever you do, you need to be able to bring in enough revenue, and that usually needs to involve offering a good product with plenty of benefits. The business model discussion that goes on top of that is interesting, but not defining in the way some people seem to want it to be.”

Google's Turn to the Dark Side

Google's Turn to the Dark Side:

The subtext of the furor over Google Reader’s shutdown is that Google no longer considers publishers its primary customers. Google folk (particularly Marissa Mayer) used to talk quite eloquently about how best way to ensure someone would return to the site was to send them away quickly. Google Plus doesn’t even have an open API (yet), there is nothing you will get from Google Plus without driving into the horrendous cul-de-sac that is plus.google.com. Just last week, I was reminiscing about the fury when Google launched a toolbar update that allowed Google to offer user’s features on top of the pages they were browsing. This was also the guiding philosophy of Google’s unfairly-maligned OpenSocial product. These products represent a philosophy turned 180 degrees relative to Google Plus; to use google’s software you never even had to navigate to Google.com.

Google’s shuttering of Reader, as well as their doubling down on the dual debacles of Google Plus and Glass, represent the complete rejection of the “send them away so they will return philosophy” which was the primary reason that nerds (like me) fell in love with Google in the first place. Google is replacing a strategy that was easily understood and straightforward with one that is nearly Orwellian in scope. They’re already quite far down this road, but the shuttering of Google Reader makes it clear for all to see. Google is a different company than it used to be, but the dramatic turn feels like a turn to ‘evil,’ and that’s quite sad for me.

“Laura talks about it being for someone who wants to, “…keep track of what’s going on at the roots of my beat” or to “…really geek out” on some subject or other. It solves a very deep Search problem by facilitating a connection between the consumers of the information who want to get it in as dense and pure a form as possible, uncut on the street with the baby laxative the various aggregators use to define what will be popular. It is information curation in its purest form. If we once manage to find the true experts in the subjects we thrive on, the very wellsprings from which the best ideas flow, how could we not want to establish a permanent pipeline into those cognitive reservoirs? How else to do so than by use of a tool like Google Reader. This is the Super High Octane driven by true Human Intelligence alternative to Page Rank. It’s Quora done more deeply than a single question at a time. It’s more deeply Social than anything seen since for those who genuinely want to be a part of a select community of Thinkers. It is Ernest Hemingway and all of the others in Paris. It’s plugging directly into particular cyber-cognitive neighborhoods the way only Gibson and Stephenson could imagine before it came along. And Google wants to burn it down.”

Dust mites show evolution in reverse

by Jim Erickson-Michigan

U. MICHIGAN (US) — A genetic study of tiny dust mites appears to offer evidence supporting the controversial idea of reversible evolution.

The hypothesis that evolution is unidirectional and irreversible—not reversible—is known as Dollo’s law. The concept is a topic of heated debate among biologists.

Chuck Cowdery: The best kept secrets in bourbon

by John Hansell

Yes, I know. I’m overdue for a blog post. I’m just back from vacation and diving head first into putting together the next issue of Whisky Advocate magazine.

To keep you entertained in the interim, I’d like to draw your attention to a great blog post by Whisky Advocate contributor Chuck Cowdery. Good bourbon isn’t expensive, nor is it hard to find. I agree with every one of his recommendations. Have a look.

Nicely done, Chuck. It’s a valuable resource for anyone looking for a nice, versatile bourbon at a fair price.

UNIFORM | Pocket Squares

by Lizzie

Photo via Alterations Needed.

I've been noticing (but only barely) that women's blazers are being increasingly designed with functional breast pockets. This is good news because one of the biggest head-scratchers when it comes to women's suiting is that they never have a breast pocket (or interior pockets, but that's another post for another day). No breast pocket means no pocket squares, and that just feels like giant missed opportunity. Why exclude the option for an added color pop—especially since we don't wear ties? Plus, the flamboyance and frill of a pocket square, to me, seems much more suited to a women's ensemble. On the higher end, Hermes, Ralph Lauren, Paul Smith and Paul Stuart have all been known to add working breast pockets on jackets for ladies, but I'd love to know if you guys know of any other designers, it'd be great to compile a list. Would you wear a pocket square?

In the mean time, here are some springy men's pocket squares I'm really liking: Clockwise from top left: Ikat pocket square ($19); Polka Dot Penny Bun square ($32); Floral pocket qquare ($50); Two-tone Linen pocket square ($35); Sid Mashburn pocket square ($55); Buzzy square ($12).

The NYPD Declares Martial Law in Brooklyn

Thursday, March 14, 2013 20:11

(Before It’s News) On the heels of three nights of protests over the police slaying of 16 year old Kimani Gray, the NYPD has turned the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn into a State of Exception, claiming emergency powers to suspend the constitutional guarantees of the citizenry.

The people regularly targeted by police harassment and violence, overwhelmingly the city’s poor and minority populations, have taken to the streets to speak out against the NYPD’s draconian tactics. The police have in turn responded with even further harsh measures by suppressing the right of the people to voice dissatisfaction with that very same police force.

Cops kettled protesters at Wednesday night’s candlelight vigil, resulting in 46 arrests. Police even arrested Kimani Gray’s distraught sister, Mahnefeh.

The NYPD euphemistically calls the public spaces in which the Constitutional rights of the people are suspended “frozen zones.”

Allison Kilkenny wrote about the NYPD’s so-called “frozen zones” in December 2011:

“The ‘frozen zone’ is an arbitrary, official police business-sounding title that has absolutely zero legal merit. It’s something the NYPD made up, just as the ‘First Amendment zone’ is something [Los Angeles Mayor Antonio] Villaraigosa made up to suppress media coverage of the Occupy raids.”

According to FIERCE, the “frozen zone” in East Flatbush is being used to prevent media from covering the protests and arrests. Meanwhile, people inside the “frozen zone” can be subjected to arrest merely by exercising their constitutional rights.

“It basically means the area is under temporary martial law,” writes FIERCE. “The last times the NYPD declared a Frozen Zone was on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and during the beginning of OWS.”

An arbitrary dictate that arrests protest and free speech, set forth by the institution that is itself the target of the protests, creates a potentially dangerous precedent of placing the NYPD beyond reproach.

Occupy Austin reposted this poignant summary of events by Jen Roesch as they were unfolding in Brooklyn last night:

“East Flatbush, Brooklyn is under martial law as the NYPD declares it a ‘frozen zone’. Media are being monitored and kept from moving and reporting freely. Dozens of arrests and much brutality. Kimani was shot in the back seven times; a witness is sure he was unarmed; multiple reports are coming out that the police had been waging a campaign of harassment against the young man (including taunting him about a friend who had died in a car accident and threatening to shoot him when he tried to leave). This is just blocks from where Shantel Davis was shot, dragged from her car and left to bleed to death in the street last summer. After that shooting, police went to all the surrounding delis and confiscated their surveillance videos. Residents in the neighborhood live in a state of terror. Heartbreaking, enraging, the stuff that riots are made of. This city is at a breaking point.”

Kimani Gray’s parents are scheduled to hold a press conference this evening to address the March 9 police slaying of their young son.
