Film: Great Job, Internet!: Start your week with a supercut of Gary Oldman freaking out

by Matt Kodner
firehose

supercuts are in decline but I cannot pass up an Oldman supercut

Though he is also a fine, fine actor, Gary Oldman will likely be remembered for all those times he went bananas in all those movies. No matter how nuanced a performance he gives, fans are all but guaranteed at least one onscreen blow up from the chameleonic actor. In celebration of his recent 55th birthday, Flavorwire helped immortalize this reputation with a compilation of the best of (read: all of) Oldman’s onscreen freak outs and raving rants. Oldman has acknowledged his reputation, so maybe next year we'll see a compilation of his finer, more reserved moments. But that wouldn’t be very supercut-y, now would it? [via Slashfilm]

Music: Newswire: Here are Limp Bizkit and Lil Wayne yelling about themselves for six long minutes

by Sean O'Neal
firehose

now that Wayne is no longer at death's door, I feel OK with saying "fuck Wayne" again

The new single from Limp Bizkit, as one might expect from a 42-year-old man, finds Fred “Freddy D.” Durst in a wistful, reflective mood. “They say that rock shit doesn’t rock anymore,” Durst laments on “Ready To Go,” acknowledging the inevitable aging of the venerable rock ’n’ roll genre he definitely represents, before reviving it with his eternally youthful promises to drink gin and pass out on the floor. But not before picking up “your bitch,” whose readiness to go somewhere with Fred Durst gives the song its title.

Still, at the same time he's looking backward on the sorry state of rock music and how Fred Durst has sold 40 million records (Draw your own conclusions!), and dropping nostalgic references to that time Britney Spears supposedly gave him a blowjob, Durst also offers a metaphorical “finger-fuck the sky,” pointing to music’s future with an obligatorily lazy ...

TV: Newswire: Cougar Town gets a fifth season

by Sean O'Neal

huh

The move to the cul-de-sac of lowered expectations has paid off handsomely for Cougar Town, as TBS has just ordered a fifth season of the salvaged ABC sitcom. That’s 13 more episodes than anyone thought they would see, on top of the fourth-season episodes currently airing that no one thought would happen. That’s a lot of positive things happening for a show about people constantly being mauled by cougars.

Games: The Gameological Society: BioShock Infinite’s greatness is held back by its love of BioShock

by John Teti
firehose

by no means a negative review, but it's nice to see some skepticism on the storytelling front

"The takeaway is that anyone who seeks power is a scoundrel, a moral steeped in the easy cynicism of false equivalence. (I expect this sort of Nihilism Lite from Rockstar Games, but not from Levine.) The intellectual dodge of calling everyone a loser excuses Infinite from having a meaningful political point of view. The game’s politics hide behind its metaphysics—if everything is just a matter of perspective, why bother holding any ideals?

...

Levine seems blind to the moments in which BioShock’s bones are a poor fit for Infinite. Likewise, he doesn’t account for the discordance that results from a piecemeal approach to game creation."

Review: BioShock Infinite

By and large, Tokyo Disneyland is the same as Disneyland. The monorail makes the same stops, and the animatronic pirates pillage the same faux-Caribbean. The unapologetic cut-and-paste approach makes sense when you’re building a theme park on the other side of the world. It’s less appealing as the basis for a video game sequel, which is what makes BioShock Infinite so vexing. It brings players to a wonderful new place, teases them with new ideas, and then takes them on much the same ride as BioShock did six years ago. It’s a small world after all.

When it was released in 2007, BioShock was a revelation. Written by Ken Levine, (who directed Infinite but was not associated with the 2010 cash-in BioShock 2) the first-person shooter interrogated the philosophy of Ayn Rand by putting an objectivist tyrant at the heart of an underwater dystopia. Your were left ...

Music: MusicalWork Review: Depeche Mode: Delta Machine

by Annie Zaleski

After spending much of the ’80s and ’90s churning out one synthpop jam after another, Depeche Mode has spent much of the last 15 years exploring more subdued vistas. Save for a few notable exceptions—mainly the scorched singles of 2005’s Playing The Angel—the band opted for sparse beats and meandering electronic sprawls instead of concise pop. For fans, this could be frustrating. Martin Gore’s tart hooks always kept Depeche Mode relevant and evolving; without their influence, the band’s music often sounded stagnant.

“Heaven,” Delta Machine’s interminable first single, certainly suffers from this malaise. Despite Gore’s lovely choirboy harmonies, the song feels like electro-soul dragged through quicksand. Thankfully, the rest of the album staves off such dullness with a potent combination of moody programming, focused songwriting, and subtle velocity. That last characteristic is perhaps most crucial to Delta Machine’s intrigue: Urgency permeates the ...

Film: Newswire: Producers of Atlas Shrugged stand up for self-interest by making another film for themselves

by Sean O'Neal

In keeping with the fundament of self-interest that underscores its source material, the producers of the Atlas Shrugged movies have confirmed that a third film will be made—a film that will, again, primarily interest themselves. Both previous installments in Ayn Rand’s vision of a world righted by corporate shit-fits have earned far less than they cost, taking in a combined $8 million at the box office for the approximately $30 million that was spent on them. Such numbers would lead most filmmakers to see this as an edict from the free market to just yield their work to some other’s control already, were they not still subscribed to Rand’s definition of objective thinking as “harboring hate-filled petulance for things that get in your way.”

Also, this is about more than just money, even though this whole thing is about money: “We are ultimately confident that we ...

Music: Newswire: Someone sent Jared Leto a severed ear that he made into a necklace, because whatever, that's just part of being Jared Leto

by Sean O'Neal

In news that makes that collage you sent him look totally lame, Jared Leto has posted the below photo of what he—rather nonchalantly, we might add—says is the severed ear a 30 Seconds To Mars fan once sent him. "You get all kinds of wonderful things. Someone cut their ear off once and sent it to me. That was very strange. A whole ear. The Van Gogh move,” Leto recently told a British radio show, comparing it to the time the famous painter, incensed after a fight with Paul Gauguin, gave his severed ear to a prostitute. Which is, indeed, just like this. "It's eerie!" he did not add, regrettably.

“The note just said, 'Are you listening?' I never knew who it was, who's missing their ear out there,” he added. And rather than looking into it or, say, alerting the authorities, Leto did what all ...

Marlon Brando was famous for his furious intensity and Method-actor brooding, but he was equally famous for his sensitivity. Behind the stormy exterior and famous rages was the soulful, vulnerable soul of a man who, say, might enjoy the company of adorable cats. It turns out Marlon Brando was exactly that sort of soulful, brooding cat lover, as evidenced by this assortment of photographs of the legendary Academy Award winner frolicking with felines from the good folks over at Retronaut. Super Mario Spacetime Organ, An Instrument That Creates Music From a Video Game’s RAM State

by Justin Page

The Super Mario Spacetime Organ by Chris Novello (aka “Paper Kettle“) is a “codebending” video game instrument that allows him to manipulate and create music from the RAM state of Nintendo’s classic video game, Super Mario Bros. Chris does so with the use of both his custom built illucia instrument and a Soundplane multi-touch music controller made by Madrona Labs. The technology and results seen in this demonstration video are quite amazing.

Mario’s universe is held in RAM, which the NES uses to draw his world for each frame of the game. By recording the entire state of the NES memory for every frame, I’m able to go back to any moment in Mario’s life.

So then I use the X-axis of the Soundplane to sweep through the timeline of Mario’s universe.

Not only that, but the Soundplane is multitouch, so I use a second finger to specify start and endpoints in a playback loop. Technically, this is similar to the way samplers and granular synths work in audio.. but with the entire memory state of the NES. Conceptually, it is like Super Mario meets Groundhog Day. Mario’s universe computer/time machine gets caught in hellish loops.

And Mulch More: Plants vs Zombies 2 Mere Months Away

by Alec Meer

By Alec Meer on March 27th, 2013 at 10:00 am.

Please don't make Tallnut a microtransaction

Happy face: PopCap’s Plants vs Zombies 2 will apparently arrive this Summer.
Worried face: PopCap now belong to EA, who want to put microtransactions in everything they can. I’m crossing fingers, toes, unmentionables and internal organs that PvZ2 can somehow escape this disease and just be a lovely, complete little game of its own.

Release date news comes via an official press release, which sadly holds no detail on the as-yet unseen casual tower defence sequel beyond “Plants vs. Zombies 2, the sequel to the original blockbuster
game, is slated to launch in early summer.”

In addition to that is PvZ Adventures, a Facebook thing. I’m not going to lie and pretend I feel anything other than contempt for the prospect, but there’s the summary anyway: “PvZ Adventures will present players with a wild and humorous series of “road-trips,” traveling near and far to thwart the zombie invasion in a variety of settings. Players will also be able to send hordes of zombies to their Facebook friends, a thoughtful gesture sure to be appreciated (and reciprocated). New zombie and plant types, new ways of obtaining, cultivating and deploying plant defenses, and leaderboards are among the other new features in PvZ Adventures.” Also, “We like to think we’re creating a brand new twist on the classic Plants vs. Zombies that is the most social, shareable and expansive Plants vs. Zombies experience ever.”

So yeah, it’ll work in exactly the same waiting/fleecing/nagging way as every other shitting Facebook game under the sun, then.

Why yes, I am in an absolutely foul mood today. Thanks for noticing.

First Look: Space Hulk

by Jim Rossignol

By Jim Rossignol on March 27th, 2013 at 2:46 am.

I am on the show floor at GDC, standing next to an unflappable and smiling Thomas Lund of Full Control Studios. He is pleased. He is showing me Space Hulk. He is so excited about it that I can’t help get caught up in his enthusiasm and start feeling giddy, even though I have been taking all of my cynicism medication. He’s been gesticulating and enthusing and SPACE HULK.

It looks pretty great.

Let’s get this straight: Those screenshots pretty much do convey what the Full Control team are doing, and as I watch Lund fill a corridor intersection with fire to hold back swarms of genestealer blips, I know that something special could await us. This is a game of relatively small ambition – to convert a familiar and beloved boardgame – but it’s an ambition that is so perfectly formed that no one should be in any doubt about its value. Yes, Full Control could fumble this new videogame version of the game, no I don’t think they’re going to.

Lund is executing his tactics for “Suicide Mission”, the first Space Hulk mission, and telling me about how he’s had to tweak things to make the boardgame flow as a videogame. Perhaps the hardcore will yell at him, he says, but he’s okay with that, because he’s confident that Full Control are making both a solid turn-based strategy as well as a game that is faithful to the Games Workshop board-classic. Visually it’s impeccable. It also allows you to do a few things that you can’t do in the boardgame, like coming back and using up the last bit of action on a unit before you close your turn.

He’s deployed his team, and blocked off one corridor with an overwatched space marine captain. If he can hold off the worst of the blips with the flamer, then getting to the control room via the remaining corridor should be possible. The AI, he explains, has two layers. One will attempt to react to overall strategy, bunching up genestealers in groups so that they can attempt to overwhelm the player’s terminators with a torrent of claws and tongues, and the other manages the individual beasts rushing and engaging the steely Blood Angels.

Lund’s captain opens up on a corridor full of flinching purple gurners, revealing a close-up action shot between turns, much like XCOM’s fancy action camera. This in turn reveals the gorgeous hi-fidelity terminator model and the detailed spaceship interiors. It’s quite the thing to watch, but also seems to chime with some of what’s happening in turn-based strategy right now: the mechanics are skimmed straight from the boardgame, but the Space Hulk we’re going to get to play is also aglow with electronic fancies and burning particle effects.

Just as Lund is mid-way through his assault on this small, early hulk, a voice from behind us cries. “Is THAT what I THINK it is?” A man in a bowler hat thrusts himself toward the screen with eyes open wide. ‘Space Hulk!” he breathes. Clearly this man does not read RPS. The news of Space Hulk reaching our computerised shores has not reached him. “This is INCREDIBLE,” he announces, and then he launches into a torrent of Wouldn’t It Be Cool Ifs which encompass Marine vs Marine combat, Necromunda, Grey Knights, daemons, why Warhammer has so few robots, something about angry men, and everything else 40k besides. During the exchange Lund talks about the versus mode that currently works in a hotseat on the same machine, which everyone nods about. “THIS IS VERY COOL,” says our new friend. “THQ breaking apart is totally for the best.”

Lund does not flinch. “We’re pleased with Games Workshop’s new licensing strategy,” he admits. Then hat man is gone, and Lund shows me the level editor, which will be a standalone modular level-building kit. He’s not going to provide tools that allow players to customise the game out of canon, he says, but with things like this the community will be able to upload its creations, and to vote up good builds for others to download and play. It’s a perfect use of the PC platform: giving us the game to play, and the tools to continue the pleasure.

And so players are going to be able to challenge each other once the campaign is done, which might not be all that long, says Lund, but it will be tough. “You will fail three out of four times,” he says. “We want you to [fist pumps] when you get through that level. Space Hulk is not about making things easy. Games like this…” Lund savours the thought for a moment. “Games like this should challenge us. Space Hulk is about failing.”

It looks like Space Hulk should do precisely the opposite of that.

Space Hulk is due in “Maybe Fall” 2013.

BioShock Infinite: A Few Essential Tweaks

by Craig Pearson

By Craig Pearson on March 27th, 2013 at 11:00 am.

Hello down there. My FOV is now this big.
Hello. I am not at GDC, but I am at my desk with my lips on the RPS post horn, and I’m prepared to blow. My first honk on the Grand Parper of Postage today concerns my first few moments in BioShock Infinite. All those intro videos, that squeezed FOV, and an overly sensitive mouse . I’m used to having to drop out of games so I can go INI file wrestling, and Levine’s latest is no exception. I’ve been forum lurking and come up with a few fixes for the most common issues.

All the INI files are found in this folder.

Yourname\My Documents\My Games\BioShock Infinite\XGame\Config\

Make sure you edit them in something like Notepad++, to make you feel all cool and hackery. If you mess up, all you need to do is delete the whole file. The game will generate a new, default one when it next loads up.

FOV
There is an FOV slider in the menu screen, but it’s capped off at 85%. I’m a 95-110% kind of guy. I have no reasoning for this, other than a love for Kubrick movies. That slider’s function can be altered easily enough.

The file you’ll want to alter is XUserOptions.

CTRL-F to find MaxUserFOVOffsetPercent=15.000000 and change the value to something higher. It works on percentages, so 28.570000 would mean the maximum the slider goes to is 90 degrees. I’d whack it to 40, or higher, because it alters the top end of in-game FOV slider. In-game, adjust the slider until you’re comfortable.

Disable Intro Vids
I don’t dislike AMD, 2k, or any of the other fine companies represented in the opening videos, but I don’t like them enough to want to hear about them all the time. Begone!

Open the XEngine.ini. CTRL-F to [FullScreenMovie].

These lines are scattered within.

StartupMovies=2KLogoSweep720p2997
StartupMovies=IrrationalLogoTest
StartupMovies=UE3AnimatedLogo_ProRes
StartupMovies=AMDLogo720p

Change them to

;StartupMovies=2KLogoSweep720p2997
;StartupMovies=IrrationalLogoTest
;StartupMovies=UE3AnimatedLogo_ProRes
;StartupMovies=AMDLogo720p

And the intrusive adverts are BioGone.

Mouse Sensitivity Slider
If your mouse is particularly sensitive, the ranges of the sensitivity slider might too wide for you to subtly alter.

These fixes are for XUserOptions.

CTRL-F: MinMouseLookSensitivity. It’ll be at 0.100000. Change it to about 0.05. Below it MaxMouseLookSensitivity is at 4.000000. Change the higher value to something lower. Aim for 1.0, but you can go up or down to help with the range.

Enable 1999 mode right away.

The hardest game mode is hidden away, waiting for you to complete the game. If you feel like you want a challenge right way, here’s how.

No INI hacking. On the main menu press: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Esc, Enter.

I spent all night looking for these, but it turns out PCGamingWIKI has them and a few more besides. I’ve not tried the others.

Digitally Remastered Screenshot From the Video Game ‘Super Metroid’

by Justin Page

Super Metroid - Depths of Tourian

Photoshop artist TJ Townsend has digitally remastered a screenshot taken from the 1994 16-bit game, Super Metroid (here is a larger version). TJ has also released a terrific time-lapse video that shows his entire design process.

In order to give the screenshot a 16×9 aspect ratio this is not an actual screenshot from the game, but made up of several screenshots and sprite sets. Included in this scene is a metroid, which is not accurate to the game, but believable since there wouldn’t be a logical reason that one could not wander into Mother Brain’s room (And I really wanted to remake the metroid).

Largest DDoS In History Reaches 300 Billion Bits Per Second

by Unknown Lamer
An anonymous reader writes "The NYT is reporting that the Largest DDoS in history reached 300 Gbps. The dispute started when the spam-fighting group Spamhaus added the Dutch company Cyberbunker to its blacklist, which is used by e-mail providers to weed out spam. Millions of ordinary Internet users have experienced delays in services like Netflix or could not reach a particular Web site for a short time. Dutch authorities and the police have made several attempts to enter the bunker by force but failed to do so. The attacks were first mentioned publicly last week by Cloudflare, an Internet security firm in Silicon Valley that was trying to defend against the attacks and as a result became a target."

Netflix signs up The Matrix, Babylon 5 creators to develop a new sci-fi series: Sense8

by Richard Lawler

Continuing its quest to sate subscribers' appetites with a flow of original content, Netflix has announced a new original series, Sense8. Due in late 2014, it's being developed by the Wachowskis of The Matrix, V for Vendetta, Cloud Atlas and Speed Racer fame, as well as J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5. Details are thin, but the press release promises a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted with a ten episode run for its first season.

As it did with House of Cards, Arrested Development and other productions, Netflix is relying heavily on data from viewers to decide which programs to support. According to chief content officer Ted Sarandos, "Andy and Lana Wachowski and Joe Straczynski are among the most imaginative writers and gifted visual storytellers of our time," whose creations are very frequently viewed on the service. According to the creators themselves, they've sought to work together for a decade, and this idea started from a late night conversation about "the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us." If that's not enough for now, then there are a few more details and quotes in the press release, which is included after the break.

UNIFORM | Lapel Pins

Stella McCartney wearing a Remembrance Poppy lapel pin.

Wes Anderson, Nick Wooster, and cool street style dudes have been steadily reclaiming lapel pins from the boxy suits of politicians and placing them on their own blended wool, silk, tweed, and corduroy lapels. We talked pocket squares last week as the perfect opportunity for women to bring a subtle pop of color to their blazer or jacket, and I feel the same way about lapel pins. Why the hell not, right? If your lapel has a buttonhole (that's the English term for boutonnière), a silk knot is a cheap and easy way to go. If not, there's plenty of options out there.

Clockwise from top left: Pewter Whale lapel pin ($5); Vintage bow tie lapel pin (similar version $89); Wm. Spear vintage Land Rover lapel pin ($12); Thomas Pink silk knot ($10 for pair); Arrow and Chain lapel pin ($17); Orvis feather brooch ($14-$39); Super Pop boutonniere ($22).
