IGF grand prize winner gives his booth away to 'Howling Dogs'

by Jessica Conditt

LOL YES

IGF grand prize winner gives his booth away to 'Howling Dogs' IGF Seumas McNally grand prize winner Richard Hofmeier, the man behind Cart Life, vandalized his own booth on the GDC show floor and handed it over to Porpentine, the developer behind text adventure Howling Dogs.

Hofmeier hit up Porpentine on Twitter on Thursday morning, to kindly request he show Howling Dogs at his "booth thing." Oh, you know, just that booth for the awards that Cart Life totally swept last night. No big deal. Porpentine responded in the affirmative, and Hofmeier got to work tagging his own sign.

"IM REALLY EXCITED ABOUT HOWLING DOGS WINNING THE IGF," Porpentine later tweeted. For those at GDC, check out Howling Dogs in the IGF booth roundup in Moscone South. You can't miss it. Everyone else, play it here.

You can totally 3D print your own Ouya case

by JC Fletcher
You can totally 3D print your own Ouya caseIf you're from the future and have your own 3D printer, you can customize your Ouya console with a 3D-printed case.

Ouya posted a 3D model for the console on Thingiverse, allowing 3D printer users to customize the box with whatever materials and colors they have, and print their very own. You could even try to edit the model to add features to the thing. The designs are "optimized" for the MakerBot Replicator 2, a device that really exists and that people can buy.

If you're at GDC this week, you can see the results of this art project for yourself. Meanwhile, Ouyas will begin shipping out to Kickstarter backers tomorrow.

IGF 2013: And the awards go to... Cart Life!

by Jessica Conditt
IGF 2013 And the awards go to Cart Life The 2013 IGF awards have wrapped up at GDC in San Francisco, with Richard Hofmeier and Cart Life taking home the Seumas McNally Grand Prize of $30,000, the Nuovo Award for innovation, which snags $5,000, and the Excellence in Narrative award for $3,000. Cart Life is a simulation game about the hard times facing food cart vendors in small-town, USA, and as demonstrated by the screenshot above, it's more dramatic than you may expect.

If you want to brag to your friends about playing the latest in hot indie games, you can pick it up on Steam now for a sale price of $3.50.

Subset Games' space-based strategy game FTL: Faster Than Light picked up two awards at IGF 2013, Excellence in Design and the Audience award. Kentucky Route Zero and Cardboard Computer grabbed the Excellence in Visual Art award, 140 got the Audio prize and Little Inferno is Technically Excellent, according to the IGF.

Check out the entire list of winners below. Congrats to all the winners!

Google rescinds some 'If I Had Glass' offers after it actually reads applicants' ideas

by Jeff Blagdon

Le Queen. @wutabril
#IfIHadGlass, I'd throw it at your face. ._.

Nikki Graziano @Nikki__Graziano
#ifihadglass I'd cut a bitch!

It looks like Google is backtracking on some of the Glass Explorer invitations it’s sent out over the past few days. Back in February, the company gave people the opportunity to pay $1,500 for early access to the headset by telling the company what they would do with the device, either by posting to Google+ or tweeting with the hashtag #ifihadglass. Now, after starting to announce winners, the Glass team is taking a step back, saying that while it needs "honest feedback" from people who are "skeptical and critical" of Glass, a few of the applications it’s received don’t jibe with the program’s terms and conditions.

With #ifihadglass we set out to find a truly diverse group of Explorers, and that’s certainly what we’ve gotten. We need honest feedback from people who are not only enthralled and excited by Glass, but also people who are skeptical and critical of it. That said, it’s become clear that a few applications that don’t comply with our terms have slipped through the cracks, and we’re going to have to disqualify applications like these. As for the rest of you, please keep that feedback coming – it’s all in the Explorer program spirit!

So what kinds of applications are being disqualified after being accepted? So far, the Glass team has only posted two to Twitter:

They definitely do seem to contravene Google's guidelines:

"It must not be derogatory, offensive, threatening, defamatory, disparaging, libelous or contain any content that is inappropriate, indecent, sexual, profane, indecent, tortuous, slanderous, discriminatory in any way, or that promotes hatred or harm against any group or person, or otherwise does not comply with the theme and spirit of #ifihadglass."

In hindsight, it might have been a better idea to vet these in advance.

Parting Shot: Batwoman & The Question and Other Geeky Marriage Equality Memes

by Andy Khouri

Mar 27th 2013 By: Andy Khouri

This week, as the Supreme Court of the United States deliberates on the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act -- which defines marriage for federal purposes as between a man and a woman -- Americans and friends from around the world have been expressing their support for marriage equality by adopting the Human Rights Campaign's logo as their temporary social media icons. It didn't take long for people to get creative with the highly Photoshoppable image, and what's resulted is an endless series of remixes that, as you might expect, contains more than a few versions that appeal to our tastes here at ComicsAlliance.

ComicsAlliance Senior Editor Andy Khouri used the artwork of JH Williams III and Cully Hamner to produce the HRC logo above, referencing the relationship between lesbian superheroes Batwoman and The Question. You can check out some more of our favorites below.

Take your first, singular look at the greenery of Legend of Grimrock 2

by Sinan Kubba
firehose

GRIMMMMROCCCCKKKKK

Take your first, singular look at Legends of Grimrock 2 Developer Almost Human released the first screenshot of Legend of Grimrock 2 this week, and it's a lot greener, less dungeon-y then expected. In announcing the follow-up to the 2012 action-RPG last month, Almost Human's Petri Häkkinen mentioned a "big engine update," and that looks to have gone into something very outdoorsy. Check out a larger 1080p sample here.

Last week, Häkkinen revealed some of the rejected ideas for Legend of Grimrock 2, namely a roguelike amalgamated with the first game's ethos, and, more pertinently, a much more exploration-based game in the outside of the Northern Realms. Grimrock's world. However, Häkkinen noted that Almost Human believes the charm of Grimrock is "compactness, tight focus and emphasis on fun core gameplay."

Based on that, it sounds like Grimrock 2 isn't going to deviate too far from the first game's style, but it looks like it may offer a bit more fresh air.

MySQL's Creator On Why the Future Belongs To MariaDB

by samzenpus
angry tapir writes "When Oracle purchased Sun, many in the open source community were bleak about the future of MySQL. According to MySQL co-creator Michael "Monty" Widenius, these fears have been proven by Oracle's attitude to MySQL and its community. In the wake of the Sun takeover, Monty forked MySQL to create MariaDB, which has picked up momentum (being included by default in Fedora, Open SUSE and, most recently, Slackware). I recently interviewed Monty about what he learned from the MySQL experience and the current state of MariaDB."
