The Singing Ringing Tree, A Landmark Musical Sculpture in England

by mikl-em

The Singing Ringing Tree” is a musical sculpture near Burnley in the North West of England built by architects Tonkin Liu. It was designed in 2004 and completed at the end of 2006. It is one of four landmark art projects called “Panopticons” built in the early 2000′s in Lancashire. The film above was directed by Zsolt Sándor with sound by A Man Called Adam.

The tree is constructed of stacked pipes of varying lengths, orientated to lean into the directions of the prevailing wind. As the wind passes through the different lengths of pipe, it plays different chords. Each time you sit under the tree, looking out through the wind, you will hear a different song.

The tree won a 2007 award for architectural excellence from the Royal Institute of British Architects. As part of the project’s launch local kids and young adults wrote fanciful stories inspired by the sculpture.

French artist Armelle Caron  has taken it upon herself to tidy up several of the world’s great cities (as well as Tamarac, Florida) in what she calls graphical anagrams. Can you guess which city is represented here? See the original after the jump, and see her gallery of tidied cities for more.

A great city, all tidied up

What other city would I pick than New York?

drones beat

This week’s issue of The Magazine is special: instead of running five articles of our typical length (about 1,500 words), we published two regular-length articles and an amazing, 7,500-word feature article by Pulitzer-winner (!) Eli Sanders, with illustrations by Tom Tomorrow, on the status and future of domestic drones — from hobbyist to government uses — and the potential ramifications to our society.

Since the app experience isn’t ideal for articles this long, we’ve split it into three parts. Here’s part one. Highly recommended.

amordragon:

Since her death in 1979, the woman who discovered what the universe is made of has not so much as received a memorial plaque. Her newspaper obituaries do not mention her greatest discovery. […] Every high school student knows that Isaac Newton discovered gravity, that Charles Darwin discovered evolution, and that Albert Einstein discovered the relativity of time. But when it comes to the composition of our universe, the textbooks simply say that the most abundant atom in the universe is hydrogen. And no one ever wonders how we know.

Made in Chian

by Victor Mair

From theChive:

At first I thought that might have been a unique slip-up, but it turns out that "Made in Chian" is common. There has been at least one essay on the subject, and images documenting this spelling are legion.  Here are just a few.

From RCGroups:

From TranslatorsCafé:

The plastic liner of a gift flower basket:

Among the things from various companies I've seen that are labeled as "Made in Chian" are cell phones, computers, furniture, filters, rubber washers, birthday candles, foodstuffs, sports equipment, clothing — just about anything you'd expect to be made in China. "Chian" was not one of the spellings that I covered in my post  "The transcription of the name 'China' in Chinese characters", 6/17/2012.

Wondering what might have triggered this misspelling over and over again, I'm guessing that it may have something to do with the fact that "Chian" has the appearance of a common Chinese syllable: Pinyin "qian", Wade-Giles "ch'ien", Yale "chyan". That's just a guess, but there must some reason why this same spelling mistake is made over and over again.

Swansea library cat causes controversy

by Steven M. Cohen

“A cat in Swansea that lives at the town’s public library is causing controversy. It’s front page news in southeastern Massachusetts. A quiet, unassuming cat is causing big problems for at least one person in Swansea. “It’s a continuation of the handicapped accessibility platform I started in 2007,” said Patrick Higgins, a Swansea resident. Patrick Higgins says the library needs to make big changes to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act; changes like adding a ramp to the front entrance and taking down a fence in front of the gazebo in back — but removing a cat?” (via WHDH-TV)

Yes, dogs can eat carbohydrates, and here’s why

by Marion

When Mal Nesheim and I were writing our book about the pet food industry, Feed Your Pet Right, we were constantly challenged to defend our contention that dogs can eat pretty much anything, including commercial food products made with grains.

Our reasoning: dogs are not wolves.  They evolved to take full advantage of the leftovers from human food consumption.

Now a study published in Nature Magazine, “The genomic signature of dog domestication reveals adaptation to a starch-rich diet,” explains how this happened.

The investigators sequenced the entire genomes of dogs and wolves.  They identified 3.8 million genetic variants, and used them to identify 36 genomic regions that appeared related to dog domestication.  Many of these gene regions appear to be associated with the behavioral changes needed to domesticate wolves.

Ten of the genes turned out to have roles in starch digestion; three of these genes promote digestion.

The investigators identified mutations in key wolf genes that allowed this to happen.  The study provides evidence that dogs “thrive on a diet rich in starch, relative to the carnivorous diet of wolves.”

This, they say, constitutes a crucial step in the early domestication of dogs.

In conclusion, we have presented evidence that dog domestication was accompanied by selection at three genes with key roles in starch digestion: AMY2BMGAM and SGLT1. Our results show that adaptations that allowed the early ancestors of modern dogs to thrive on a diet rich in starch, relative to the carnivorous diet of wolves, constituted a crucial step in early dog domestication…In light of previous results describing the timing and location of dog domestication, our findings may suggest that the development of agriculture catalysed the domestication of dogs.

If your dog is domesticated, it will love those carbs just as you do.  But keep it away from the pizza and cookies.  We seem to have co-evolved to put on the pounds together too.

“A tradition in the cafés of Naples is to order a caffè sospeso – literally, a coffee “in suspense” (aka. caffè pagato, or “paid coffee”) – as a sign of your good fortune. When a sospeso is ordered, the customer pays for two coffees, but only receives one. That way, when a person who is homeless or otherwise down on their luck walks into the café, the person can ask if there are any coffees held in suspense, and can have one as a courtesy of the first customer. Though the custom has been a part of Neapolitan society for many years, it is somewhat less common today.”

Doctor Who really does need more female writers

by Charlie Jane Anders
firehose

Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/tvandradioblog/2013/mar/27/doctor-who-female-writers

"There must surely be women capable of writing a good Doctor Who episode. But this problem of male-dominated script credits isn't just the good Doctor's. The writers' rooms of fantasy and science-fiction shows in the UK seem to be notable for their domination by men. Of 65 episodes of the recently axed Merlin, for example, only four were written by a woman. And the show bowed out with a series in which no women writers credited at all.

Other shows can't even reach the giddy heights of one woman writer on the team. And in cases when a show comes from one just one writer, it tends to be a man who is behind the script, from The Fades to Outcasts to Misfits, which began with Howard Overman at the helm and then brought on board other male writers. (Overman will also write new BBC1 show Atlantis.) On CBBC, The Sarah Jane Adventures, a show rightly lauded for it's sixtysomething female lead, employed no female writers whatsoever. And the new Wizards vs Aliens? None there either."

Anders: "I asked Moffat why the Doctor doesn't just listen to the host of people who keep telling him he shouldn't travel alone, and instead struggles against taking on another companion. Moffat responded that the Doctor doesn't want to put anyone in harm's way, and also that he's headstrong and believes he's always right. Just like a man, in other words, Moffat added.

So in Moffat's own view, the Doctor is an archetypally male character -- but the show rests on an ever-changing series of female characters, who actually carry the bulk of the emotion and character development. You can see why it might be advantageous to have some female writers in the mix, right?"

Stella Duffy: "We can knock and knock, but if they won't let us in, we'll never get to see how big the Tardis really might be inside. Right now, the Tardis only holds men, so maybe it's not that big, after all."

Who novelist JT Colgan: "I think producers and commissioners should sometimes be a bit bolder about trusting girls with their toys. I mean, come on: Margaret Atwood, Ursula le Guin, Madeleine L'Engel, Audrey Niffenegger, JK Rowling, Suzanne Collins, Stephanie Meyer ... it's hardly as if women don't have a proven track record."

There hasn't been a woman writing for Doctor Who in several years -- and you can make a strong argument the BBC's famous time-travel show has suffered as a result. Over at the Guardian, there's a pretty compelling article about the lack of women writing for Who, and why this matters.

"Firefox OS is as much a project to improve the Web as it is a project to build a new mobile..."

Firefox OS is as much a project to improve the Web as it is a project to build a new mobile operating system. Every Firefox OS API Mozilla can get adopted by other major browsers makes it easier for developers to convert vanilla Web apps into “native” Firefox OS apps, and vice versa. Even if Mozilla’s OS never gains significant market share, the effort to flesh out a complete set of Web standards for mobile computing will help to push the Web forward.

HERE’s designers don’t seem to have paid much attention to the detailed user interface guidelines Mozilla has developed.

And the story is much the same for other apps in the Marketplace. Each app seems to use its own style for user interface elements.
