NCBI ROFL: Left-handed people avoid using exact numbers.

If you're ever engineering a nuclear power plant with a lefty, beware: apparently, the same features of their brain that make them left-handed might also make them avoid using exact numbers.  Even more surprising, just having a left-handed relative makes people more prone to rounding. Maybe this is why the Romans didn't trust them, and "sinister" comes from the Latin word for "on the left side." Apple and Yahoo reportedly in talks to build a deeper iOS partnership

by Nathan Ingraham

Apple is in talks with Yahoo to bring more of the search company's data to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, reports The Wall Street Journal. Yahoo has long been one of the data providers for iOS devices — the default stocks and weather apps pull data from Yahoo, and Siri uses the company for things like sports statistics as well. Now, the companies are discussing ways to get more Yahoo data, including expanded sports data and content from Yahoo News onto iOS, presumably through Siri or other built-in apps.

It's not a huge surprise to see Yahoo attempt to forge a deeper partnership with Apple — CEO Marissa Mayer has made it clear that mobile is a major part of her strategy for improving the company's fortunes, and the iPhone is a logical place to start. Given Google's own vast array of data, Yahoo likely holds little interest for the other dominant mobile OS. But last year, Apple finally severed all its ties with Google by removing the default Google Maps and YouTube apps that lived on iOS since its introduction in 2007.

Despite that change, Google's position on iOS is arguably stronger than ever — the company has released a string of excellent iOS apps that vastly improve on the older default options. Yahoo may have a tough road to achieving mobile dominance, but it has to start somewhere. As for now, the WSJ's sources say that no deal is imminent, so it may be a while before we see what Yahoo and Apple are planning.

BitCoin Value Collapses, Possibly Due To DDoS

by Soulskill

lol

hydrofix writes "The Bitcoin-to-USD exchange rate had been climbing steadily since January 2013, from around 30 USD to over 250 USD only 24 hours ago. Now, the value bubble seems to have burst, at least partially. The primary trading site MtGox reported a drop in value all the way down to 140 USD today, a loss of almost half in real value. With many sites unreachable or slow, there are also news of a possible DDoS attack on MtGox: 'Attackers wait until the price of Bitcoins reaches a certain value, sell, destabilize the exchange, wait for everybody to panic-sell their Bitcoins, wait for the price to drop to a certain amount, then stop the attack and start buying as much as they can. Repeat this two or three times like we saw over the past few days and they profit.'"

Laika Believes preview: The robot space dog with a heart of gold

by Jordan Mallory

SPACE DOG

Believing in Laika Believes Minicore Studios is a small indie developer in Austin, TX, and it's making an alternate history game about the first dog in space. The game is called Laika Believes, but unlike the legitimately terrible fate that befell the real Laika, Minicore's version of history represents something a bit more hopeful, despite its dystopian overtones.

In this universe, Laika survived her trip into orbit and returned to Earth with robotic augmentations, somehow transformed into a capable canine war machine. Why exactly this happened remains uncertain, though her mysterious metamorphosis hasn't changed her into a mindless killing machine. If anything, Laika's conversational skills are just as important as the various weapons mounted on her back.

Iran Plans To Launch an 'Islamic Google Earth'

by Soulskill
Shipwack sends this quote from the Guardian: "The Iranian authorities have long accused Google Earth of being a tool for western spy agencies, but now they have taken their attacks on the 3D mapping service one step further — by planning the launch of an 'Islamic' competitor. ... The minister, however, gave little information on what he meant by an Islamic 3D map. 'We are developing this service with the Islamic views we have in Iran and we will put a kind of information on our website that would take people of the world towards reality Our values in Iran are the values of God and this would be the difference between Basir and the Google Earth, which belongs to the ominous triangle of the U.S., England and the Zionists [a reference to Israel].' Experts, however, have serious doubts about the project. An IT consultant who has worked on Iran's national internet project in the past said the announcement was merely an excuse to obtain funds and secure working contracts for the future. 'They have claimed to run their service in four months and said their data centre capacity will reach Google's size in three years,' he said. 'Three-year project, no business model and only relying on government funding, a piece of cake indeed To have a data centre with such capacity and security level they need power stations, cooler systems, bandwidth, etc, which will require billions of dollars of investment that doesn't fit with Iran's sanctions-hit economy.'"

What Were the Top-Selling Breweries of 2012?

by Chris Schonberger

Mid-April means taxes (did you remember?!), but it also means the release of the previous year’s beer sales figures, helpfully compiled by the Brewers Association. We already know that craft breweries continued to grow in 2012, accounting for 6.5% of total beer sales (up from 5.7%), but it’s always interesting to see who’s really moving product on a large scale. If you compare the numbers below with those from 2011, there wasn’t a huge amount of movement, except for Lagunitas, which moved up to sixth place. Brooklyn Brewery also hopped two places up to 11 after expanding its Williamsburg facility.

Did you realize all of the breweries below were so big?

→ The Micron M500: a 960 GB SSD for about $600

AnandTech:

To put the drive’s excellent price in perspective, the 960GB M500 has roughly the same MSRP as Intel’s 80GB X25-M had back in 2008. That’s an order of magnitude more storage capacity at the same price in 5 years time. Moore’s Law makes me happy.

After AnandTech’s usual barrage of tests and solid analysis, this sounds like a great SSD for a lot of people: it’s not the fastest, but it has more consistent performance than most, and it’s the cheapest by far among other 1 TB-class SSDs.

Julie Taymor settles ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’ lawsuit

by Kevin Melrose

spiderman musical

Ending more than a year of intermittent negotiations and aborted deals that left even the presiding judge frustrated, the producers of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and ousted director Julie Taymor announced today they have reached a settlement in their legal battle over copyright, royalties and credit for the most expensive show in Broadway history.

“I’m pleased to have reached an agreement and hope for the continued success of Spider-Man, both on Broadway and beyond,” Taymor said in a statement. Lead producers of Michael Cohl and Jeremiah Harris offered: “We’re happy to put all this behind us. We are now looking forward to spreading Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark in new and exciting ways around the world.”

Terms of the settlement weren’t released.

Best known for her stage adaptation of Disney’s The Lion King, Taymor was fired from Spider-Man in March 2011 following her resistance to making any major changes in the wake of a series of blistering reviews. A new creative team was brought in to overhaul Spider-Manmany of Taymor’s signature elements were stripped in the process — transforming it into one of the most successful, if also most expensive, productions on Broadway.

Taymor sued Cohl and Harris in November 2011, alleging they violated her copyrights and deprived her of future royalties; they responded in kind, insisting Taymor “could not and would not do the jobs that she was contracted to do,” and therefore didn’t deserve additional royalties.

Apple Cleared of Blame, ‘Censored’ Comic Will Be Sold on iOS Devices After All

by Evan Narcisse
firehose

"As a partner of Apple, we have an obligation to respect its policies for apps and the books offered in apps. Based on our understanding of those policies, we believed that Saga #12 could not be made available in our app, and so we did not release it today.

After hearing from Apple this morning, we can say that our interpretation of its policies was mistaken. You’ll be glad to know that Saga #12 will be available on our App Store app soon."

Yesterday, all of the internet was ablaze with the news that Saga #12—Image Comics' sci-fi adventure drama by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples—was being blocked from iPads and iPhones by Apple. A new announcement from digital comics purveyor Comixology indicates that they, not Apple, were to blame. It also says that the comic will be available later today.

To our customers -

In the last 24 hours there has been a lot of chatter about Apple banning Saga #12 from our Comics App on the Apple App Store due to depictions of gay sex. This is simply not true, and we’d like to clarify.

As a partner of Apple, we have an obligation to respect its policies for apps and the books offered in apps. Based on our understanding of those policies, we believed that Saga #12 could not be made available in our app, and so we did not release it today.

We did not interpret the content in question as involving any particular sexual orientation, and frankly that would have been a completely irrelevant consideration under any circumstance.

Given this, it should be clear that Apple did not reject Saga #12.

After hearing from Apple this morning, we can say that our interpretation of its policies was mistaken. You’ll be glad to know that Saga #12 will be available on our App Store app soon.

We apologize to Saga creator Brian K. Vaughn and Image Comics for any confusion this may have caused.

All the best,

'Batgirl' #19 Features First Openly Transgender Character In Mainstream Superhero Comics

by Matt D. Wilson

Apr 10th 2013 By: Matt D. Wilson

The sibling conflict teased on the cover of Batgirl #19 may be the hook that pulls readers in, but it will be another reveal in the issue that will occupy a spot in comics history, as one of the book's characters will reveal she is transgender, the first time a character has done so in a mainstream superhero comic.

Wired reports that writer Gail Simone was inspired to create a transgender character by a conversation with Batwoman co-creator Greg Rucka at Wondercon a few years ago. Simone asked why there seem to be fewer gay male comics characters than lesbian heroes (such as Batwoman). Rucka replied it would be a huge sign of progress for a gay male character to appear on a comic cover. It'd be even bigger if the character was transgender.

Find out just who will be revealing her transgender status in the book, as well as have a look at the full cover to Batgirl #19, after the jump.

Alysia Yeoh, the young woman dating Barbara Gordon's psychopathic brother James Jr., reveals she's transgender in a conversation in which Barbara opens up and discusses her former status as a paraplegic.

Simone said DC Comics Co-Publisher Dan DiDio didn't take much convincing to give the character the go-ahead in a lunch meeting. "He just paused for a moment, asked how this would affect Barbara's story, and immediately approved it," Simone said. The writer said she plans to add another transgender character to a different comic she's writing, though she couldn't say which one.

Yeoh is also bisexual, Simone said.

Simone acknowledged that characters in independent and mature-readers titles have been transgender, and some superhero comics characters have changed their gender characteristics through magical and science-fictional means.

"Those characters exist [and] that's great, but I wanted to have trans characters who aren't fantasy-based," she said.

For the full interview and full pages from the issue, head over to Wired. Batgirl #19 is available in comic shops and on ComiXology today.
