3D printed prosthetic foot saves duck’s life via...

3D printed prosthetic foot saves duck’s life via Designboom

in november 2012, buttercup, a baby duckling hatched in a high school biology lab with a backward left foot. at the time, he probably wouldn’t have survived if mike garey, of feathered angels waterfowl sanctuary, didn’t recommend a proper amputation. months after the healing process, engineers at novacopy inc produced a 3D printed prototype for a mold that would be then used to create a prosthetic foot for buttercup. because ABS plastics used in the additive manufacturing process are not flexible enough for this type of exercise, the three-dimensionally modeled foot will later be used to create a mold for a permanent silicone prosthesis for the duck. taking just over 13 hours to produce, the printed part demonstrates the capabilities for rapid-prototyping technologies to be used not only for human application, but also in foreign subjects such as animals and other medical treatments.

This is amazing, I love how happy he looks!

iamagamer's first game jam focused on creating female protagonists

by Jordan Mallory
iamagamer's first game jam focused on creating female protagonists From July 12 through 14, Vancouver will play host to game jam organizer iamagamer's first event - a 48 hour jam focused on crafting original games with female protagonists.

"This unprecedented event will dispute the prevailing opinion that video games are for guys and that games with strong, female lead characters will not sell," the announcement press release reads. "Such stereotypes are not only incorrect, but have a negative impact on the industry."

The jam will take place at Vancouver's Centre for Digital Media, with all attendees commencing to jam at 6 p.m. local time on Friday, ceasing their jam-oriented activities 48 hours later on Sunday evening. Artists, designers, developers and writers are all encouraged to register and participate - so far over 150 people have signed on to take part in the event, either on-site in Vancouver or at one of several satellite events happening concurrently elsewhere.

Digg Reader open to the public with web and iOS apps

by Nathan Olivarez-Giles

It's later than Betaworks promised, but Digg Reader has finally opened up to the public and the service is integrated into Digg's iOS app too. Digg's hotly-anticipated RSS reader has been in beta for about a week, after a development period of about three months. And the new reader, on both the web and iOS, is nothing if not minimal. That's not a bad thing per se, but this is clearly a service that has plenty of evolution ahead of it.

As we noted in our hands-on with the beta release, the Digg Reader web app currently lacks the robust feature set of rivals such as Feedly or Newsblur. But, the service is simple, intuitive, and not set to be killed off anytime soon as Google Reader is as of July 1st. A Google account will be required to sign up for Digg Reader, and RSS subscriptions can be pulled in with ease. Once subscriptions are set up, uses can Digg and save stories as they like, or share links to Facebook and Twitter — and that's about it at this point.

A simple RSS reader that should improve over time

Betaworks has promised a slew of new features over the next few weeks and months, including integration with Evernote and IFTTT, search, and notifications. An Android app is under development, and eventually, a paid version of the reader will be introduced as well. Those interested in checking out Digg Reader for themselves can do so at digg.com/reader.

The Daily Show got a much-needed goose in its ratings with host Jon Stewart’s Skype appearance last night. More than 1.5 million tuned in — the show’s biggest crowd since June 10, which was the day the show’s Senior British Correspondent John Oliver jumped in to keep the anchor chair warm while Stewart went off to film his flick Rosewater. In between, Daily Show has dipped as low as 908,000 viewers, and as low as 202,000 viewers in the 18-34 demo who are the crack of Madison Avenue. “You’re doing an incredible job,” Stewart told Oliver during his cameo.

"I plan to add non-annoying ads that are removable with a modest fee to support it. If go read can pay for itself, I will be happy."

Go Read

Developer Matt Jibson has created Go Read, an open-source Google Reader clone. His goals, as detailed in a recent blog post, were to create an RSS reader with a simple design relatively similar to Google Reader with the same keyboard shortcuts, a webpage with mobile support, and the ability to easily import existing Google Reader and OPML feeds. Jibson also wanted the reader to be fast and not require users to install additional software or plugins. Go Read is now open to the public, and prospective users can sign up now.

'Bitchy resting face' is real (kind of). But there's hope - TODAY.com

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy

Anna Paquin
Jonathan Leibson / Getty Images for The British Fil
Anna Paquin told Jimmy Kimmel last week she suffers from "bitchy resting face."

The concept of “bitchy resting face” may have started off as a joke, but ever since the fake PSA went live – garnering more than 2 million hits on the comedy site Funny or Die and YouTube – scores of women have come forward to own up to the “disorder.”

Actress Anna Paquin of True Blood bemoaned her “BRF” during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live last week, saying that despite being happy and satisfied with her life, her default face makes her look like she “wants to kill people.” Jezebel’s Kristine Gutierrez, on the other hand, celebrated her “chronic bitch face,” proclaiming “it’s not my responsibility to be everyone’s sunshine.”

“I need to print this on business cards so I can hand it out to people who stop me and ask why I’m unhappy or angry or tell me to smile on a daily basis,” one commenter wrote in response to the video.

Written by journalist and comedian Taylor Orci, the short video was created as a parody of commercials for seemingly pseudo medical disorders. But does bitchy resting face – and its male equivalent, “a**hole resting face” -- actually exist?

Absolutely, says Michigan-based plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn.

“Bitchy resting face is a definite phenomenon that plastic surgeons like myself have described, just never with that term,” he says. “Basically many of us have features that we inherit and/or develop with age that can make us look unpleasant, grumpy, or even, yes, bitchy.”

Youn says many plastic surgeons perform what he calls “expression surgeries,” procedures meant to improve resting facial expressions.

“One procedure I perform in the grin lift, used to turn a permanent frown upside down,” he says. “As we age, some of us – myself included – find that the corners of our mouths droop, giving us a grumpy look. This is usually present with a resting face.”

Aside from a downturned mouth, what makes a face look angry or bitchy?

Youn quickly points to the deep vertical lines between eyebrows (often referred to as 11s) as another culprit that can produce an angry or unhappy vibe. Droopy or overly arched eyebrows can also work to create a wrong impression.

He estimates that he performs about 20 “grin lifts” in a year as well as 100 filler procedures to turn up the corners of the mouth. Botox injections to relax those vertical “11s” are much more prevalent. “I probably do 1,500 of those Botox procedures a year,” he says. “We do a lot. We’re very busy with that.”

While age can enhance our grumpy features, Youn says genetics also play a role in a person’s “resting face."

Julianne Barclay, a 47-year-old stay-at-home mom from Vancouver, Wash., readily admits to having a “bitchy resting face” – which she attributes to her Norwegian roots – and says she’s passed it along to her daughter.

“We’ve always joked about our resting faces looking like bitchy faces,” she says. “Sometimes it works in our favor as a natural deterrent to people we’d rather not deal with. But most of the time we laugh, thinking of all the potential friends who got away because we had ‘bitch’ written all over our faces.”

Youn says fillers, Botox and procedures like grin lifts can all help people counteract a bad case of BRF.

But simply training yourself to smile more also works.

Ann-Marie Stillion, a communication strategist and artist from Seattle, says she’s recently made an effort to wear a smile when in public after having her resting face repeatedly misinterpreted by strangers, friends, and colleagues.

“I look mad when I am thinking which has gotten me in a whole lot of trouble,” she says. “So, I smile a lot now, not because I’m so happy but because I know it makes people more comfortable. It’s good for your face, too.”

Stillion says part of her hates having to paste on a grin whenever she leaves the house because of the deeper cultural implications.

“Culturally, women are not allowed to be thoughtful and serious,” she says. “And it’s also a cultural imperative that women are expected to smile and make men happy. It’s like our ‘job’.”

Despite the annoyance of appeasing creepy dudes who expect women to “Smile!” on command, she admits the way we present ourselves to others is crucial.

“I feel like I have a stupid smile,” she says. “But I do employ it now, especially when I’m engaged with new people. If I think they may be intimidated, I slap on a smile and it makes a whole lot of difference. It’s good to be mindful of what you’re projecting to other people. And it’s good to smile, to give other people warmth.”

Just don’t go too far. You might end up with the same condition Anna Paquin says her husband and co-star Stephen Moyer suffers from: “happy resting face."

Apple Files Patent For New Proprietary Port

The port is described as a 'Combined Input Port,' where two different interfaces could be in one port. The input port includes an outer wall defining a receiving aperture, a substrate positioned within the receiving aperture. One set of contacts is configured to communicate with a first connector and the second set of contacts is configured to communicate with a second connector. Looks like another addition to the special Apple cable lineup."

this hole keeps getting deeper

Ken McCulloch of Precursor Games arrested on child pornography charges Precursor Games writer, game designer and artist Ken McCulloch has been arrested by Niagara Regional Police on child pornography possession and distribution charges, Bullet News Niagara reports. Police confiscated a "significant" amount of computer hardware after exercising a search warrant on a home in St. Catharines yesterday.

"Having just learned of these disturbing charges today and based on the serious nature of them, Ken McCulloch is no longer affiliated in any way with Precursor Games," CEO Paul Caporicci said in a statement on the developer's official forums. McCulloch's employee profile has been removed the site, and now directs to a 404 error.

McCulloch is currently in custody while he awaits a bail hearing, Bullet News Niagara reports.

Contracts: Amy's Baking Co. Makes Employees Sign a Crazy Contract

by Erin DeJesus

via Russian Sledges: "can't look away"

America's favorite restaurateurs Samy and Amy Bouzaglo of Amy's Baking Company — whose infamous appearance on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares resulted in a notorious Facebook freakout, hacking claims, deportation threats, and general shitshowiness — are at it again. The duo behind the Scottsdale, Arizona restaurant are now allegedly making employees sign a legally binding work contract, complete with "possible monetary penalties" for any breech in the employment agreement.

RadarOnline has an exclusive look at a document purporting to originate from Amy's Baking Company. The four-page document includes a non-compete clause ("[you] shall not work for any competitor within a 50 mile radius of ABC within one year of termination or voluntary resignation"). There's a $250 penalty for not showing up to work on holidays and weekends. There is a rule against "unnecessary talking." If you break something or burn food "due to direct negligence," expense "will be taken from your pay check at ABC's cost."

Signatories of the 20-item "mutual agreement" agree to the following ([sic] to everything, where applicable):

1). No Cell Phones allowed while working.

2). No outside Food or Beverages may be brought inside ABC.

3). If you fail to show up for your scheduled shift we may penalize you monetarily.

4). When you show up for work you must be dressed appropriately, and properly covered. And you must be ready to work with your hair pulled back, and hands washed by no later than 5minutes before your scheduled shift begins.

5). Any type of attitude will result in immediate termination.

6). You must leave the premise immediately after your scheduled shift, and no family or friends may come to see you while working.

7). You must remain in your designated working area.

8). No purses or bags are allowed inside ABC, (exceptions may be made) however upon leaving a designated employee of ABC has the legal right and consent to inspect any and all packages that you may have brought with you.

9). At no point is any food or any type of open beverage allowed in the kitchen. This is a direct Health Code Violation.

10). ABC has multiple security cameras and any type of theft will be punished by the fullest extent of the Law.

11). No visiting or unnecessary talking is allowed during your work shift. This causes distractions and results in loss of product. Any may result in possible harm to you, or to others.

12). Workers must keep their hair pulled back in a bun and no facial hair is allowed (unless for religious beliefs).

13). Any product such as food or plates that are broken or burned due to direct negligence will be taken from your pay check at ABC's cost.

14). Respect and distance must be given to all fellow employees. No harassment or bulling of any type will be tolerated and will be cause for immediate termination. If such and event happens you must report the incident immediately to Samy or Amy Bouzaglo.

15) You must treat the equipment and all property of ABC with respect .Equipment should be cleaned and maintained nightly as part of your scheduled shifts responsibilities.

16) Holidays and Weekends are Mandatory, by signing this contract you are accepting that you will be required to work all Holidays, and Weekends. Due to the nature of our Industry this is a necessity and any No-Show will be monetarily penalized with a fee of $250.00.

17) The recipes and techniques that have been developed by Amy at ABC are exclusive and shall remain confidential. Any removal of recipes will be considered theft.

18) You must possess a current Maricopa County Food Handlers Card.

19) The wait staff understands that any and all "tips" are property of the "house." By signing this contract, you agree that you willingly accept a payment of $8.00 to $12.00 per hour to ensure that you will receive some type of payment. Due to the volatile nature of any retail business we are unable to predict when we will have buissness.By signing this contact you agree that you are willfully accepting a payment of $___ per hour instead of tips.

20) It takes a great deal of time, energy and patience on the part of Samy & Amy (the owners) to train and teach our employees. We are investing in you as a new employer, and we are paying you to teach you. By signing this contract you are hereby accepting that you will be employed exclusively by ABC Amy's Baking Co. LLC. And shall not work for any competitor within a 50 mile radius of ABC within one year of temination or voluntary Resignation, without prior authorization from ABC. Amy's Baking Co LLC. Nor shall you be allowed to open your own business of the same type, within the above mentioned radius.

Though the document is undated, should it be recent, provision #19 — that "that any and all 'tips' are property of the 'house'" — contradicts co-owner Samy Bouzaglo's May claim that future servers would be paid $5 an hour and "get all their tips." Not mentioned in the contract: rights to appear on an upcoming Amy's Baking reality show, which the Bouzaglos might or might not be shopping around.

Yahoo shutting down AltaVista, Axis search tool, and other services in coming days

by Adi Robertson
firehose

"RSS alerts (which will be replaced by email alerts on July 1st)"

As part of an ongoing attempt to streamline and reinvent the company, Yahoo has announced that it will be shutting down 12 products in the coming days and months. Among other things, that means that once-popular search engine AltaVista will be shutting down for good on July 8th. AltaVista, which became part of Yahoo nearly a decade into its life in 2003, was a major search destination before Google rose to dominance. Now, Yahoo asks users to "please visit Yahoo! Search for all of your searching needs."

Besides AltaVista, Yahoo is shutting down a number of services that never quite caught on. That includes Yahoo WebPlayer (which won't work after June 30th), RSS alerts (which will be replaced by email alerts on July 1st), and Axis, a search app and plugin that was just launched last year. Axis came out shortly before Marissa Mayer stepped up as Yahoo CEO, so it's not surprising to see the company cleaning house under her direction. "We're shutting down a few products so we can continue to focus on creating beautiful products that are essential to you every day," reads a post announcing the news.

When Google announced its "spring cleaning" shutdown of Google Reader, millions despaired. Most of these services won't inspire much grief — several of them, including sports and celebrity sites, were superseded by similar Yahoo offerings already. Anyone who remembers a pre-Google web, though, will likely shed a tear for AltaVista. Sure, Yahoo acquired Tumblr as part of its new direction. But does that really make up for our loss?

Sesame Workshop, creators of children’s television show Sesame Street, laid off about 10 percent of their employees Tuesday.

“Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization behind Sesame Street, is constantly assessing where we must invest for the future in response to today's rapidly changing digital environment,” the company said in a statement obtained by Reuters. “After careful review, we have concluded that we must reduce our workforce by approximately 10 percent to strategically focus our resources.”

Thirty employees were laid off, while the company’s Sesame Learning program and Global Education departments are to be absorbed into other parts of the company.

Google+ catches up to competition, lets you follow favorite websites with new button

amazing innovation

It's hard to believe, but while Google+ has had share buttons and +1 buttons, its has never had a follow button that users could embed on their own webpages until today. Facebook and Twitter introduced their respective follow buttons in 2011 — Facebook's was once called a subscribe button. As one would expect, the Google+ follow button works pretty much the same as buttons from rival social networks. It's a simple javascript plugin for web developers that allows visitors to follow them on Google+ without ever having to leave the site they're visiting.

The button displays the number of followers the Google+ profile tied to the button has, and when clicked, provides a dropdown menu that lets users specify which circle they'd like to use. In addition, Google also rolled out new badges for Google+ communities, and it updated badges for pages and profiles with the ability to add accounts to your circles. The new plugins arrive on the same day that Google+ was introduced to the public two years ago, they all focus on letting users interact with the social network without visiting the website for it.

More and more of the things that set the internet on fire are of that species of charmingly moronic pairing of text and image that allows even the post-literate to feel like they have partaken of a shared cultural moment. And now, scientists are beginning to study them.
