…Not like to ours, for our isles, as they note,
Are living things that fly about at night,
And soar above and cling, throughout the day,
Like bats, beneath the bent sills of the skies…

Beats reportedly looking to end fruitless HTC partnership
The popular headphone maker Beats is reportedly attempting buy back HTC's 25 percent stake in the company. The news comes from a Wall Street Journal report that cites "people familiar with the matter" as claiming Beats is looking to bring in a new investor to provide "fresh funds for growth," and plans on buying back HTC's stake at the same time. Although HTC bought a $300 million, 50.1 percent stake in Beats back in 2011, the headphone maker paid $150 million to take half of that stake back last year.
A tale of two companies
The two companies have had dramatically different fortunes over the past few years. Although both are in buoyant segments of the market, Beats' revenue was reportedly "roughly $1 billion" last year, up five-fold from 2010, and in June statisticians at NPD claimed Beats had 59 percent of the US market for premium headphones. In contrast, HTC has crashed to quarter upon quarter of dwindling profits, although the company believes it will return to form towards the end of this financial year. All of HTC's high-end handsets are branded with the Beats logo and claim to have enhanced sound thanks to Beats integration. It's not immediately clear what would happen to the two companies' branding partnership should Beats be successful in severing its financial ties with HTC.
Wasteland Kings Is Vlambeer’s All-Star Roguelike
By Nathan Grayson on August 19th, 2013 at 9:00 am.

VLAMBEER NEVER STOPS. I know. They told me so. Seriously though, Luftrausers isn’t even off the launchpad yet, and the Super Crate Box developer is already making admirable progress on a very impressive-looking action-roguelike called Wasteland Kings. I actually had the chance to play it and discuss its various ins-and-outs with Vlambeer recently, so expect impressions very soon. But until then, know this: it’s a rapid-fire, deliciously crunchy randomized romp starring a cavalcade of characters from Vlambeer’s past. And the craziest part? The arcade action maestros are going to stream a very large portion of its development – with you playing along at home via Steam Early Access.
Here’s the basic gist, straight from the flaming bear monster silhouette thing’s mouth:
“Wasteland Kings is Vlambeers latest action roguelike-like about mutants that spend their workdays trying to fight for the throne in a post-apocalyptic world. The radioactive waste in the world allows mutants to get ahead by mutating new limbs on the fly and the abundant availability of powerful weaponry make the quest to become Wasteland King one fraught with peril. All of this is really just an excuse for us to make a fun action game.”
You can watch the entire development process unfold on Vlambeer’s Twitch channel, and the game will apparently hit Steam Early Access very, very soon. So basically, you’ll be along for the whole ride. Some of it probably won’t be pretty, but I can almost guarantee that it’ll be eye-opening.
On the upside, the few rounds I recently played already felt quite nice, with Vlambeer’s love of tightly tuned twitch-action antics on full display. I was reminded quite a bit of Binding of Isaac, only without all the kludgy movement and general awfulness of its Java-based engine (which is not to say BoI itself is bad; I love that game). Basically, this is one to keep an eye on.
Impressions/interview soon. But for now, what do you think of Wasteland Kings?

Huawei wishes Pakistan happy independence with map that gets its borders wrong

Whether it’s British pornography or US national security, the Chinese technology and telecoms giant Huawei seems to have a knack for getting itself embroiled in politics. Last week the company managed to offend Pakistan with a PR reach-out wishing it happy independence.
As Tech in Asia points out, the map of the country used in its Facebook page graphic omitted part of the disputed Kashmir territory that Pakistan claims, next to the tagline “smart ideas can alter the course of history.” Given that Indian and Pakistani troops have been exchanging fire over the border in recent weeks, the timing could have been better.

Huawei, which swiftly deleted the image, seems to be learning about PR sensitivities the hard way. Google Maps—Huawei’s choice of mapping tool—is extremely careful to account for border disputes, tailoring its services to each country’s audience and indicating how careful global tech companies have to be when dealing with political sensitivities. Google Maps India, for instance, clearly shows the Kashmir territory as part of India, whereas the global “.com” mapping service does not. China’s version includes the country’s controversial 10-dash line claiming territory in the South China Sea.
Huawei is pushing aggressively for market share in Pakistan and has just agreed to lay a fibre-optic cable to connect the country to China, a project worth $44 million.

Dr. Drang:
How, I wondered, is Musk going to solve the thermal expansion problem?
The answer turned out to be simple: he didn’t. There’s some hand waving and, possibly, a complete misunderstanding of how thermal expansion acts, but no actual solution.
Shockingly, an important part of the Hyperloop concept has been poorly thought out.
Sansa Stark's actress adopted her real-life direwolf

In Game of Thrones, Sansa Stark's dire wolf Lady met an untimely end as a sacrifice to mollify the queen's anger after Arya's dire wolf Nymeria bit Prince Joffrey (and then ran away). In real life, however, Lady's doing much better — especially after actress Sophie Turner adopted the Mahlek Northern Inuit Dog who played her.
