How to break out of your own little corner of the Internet: Rewire, reviewed

by Cyrus Farivar
Ethan Zuckerman's first book was released in June 2013.

My favorite moment in Ethan Zuckerman’s new book, Rewire: Digital Cosmopolitans in the Age of Connection, comes toward the end, where he describes the way that the legendary rock band Journey discovered its new lead singer in 2007. The new singer is Arnel Pineda, a Filipino and a product of his homeland’s love of karaoke bars.

The long and complicated relationship between the United States and the Philippines ensures that American pop culture enjoys widespread exposure in Manila and that most Filipinos speak English. In addition, a style of singing called plakado—the Tagalog word for “platter” or “record”—has been popular there since it was developed in the 1960s. Filipino singers reproduce recordings as faithfully as possible, and the highest form of praise for a live vocalist is that he sounded plakado, exactly as it did on the recording. Plakado reached even greater stylistic heights as electronic karaoke machines that score vocalists on their precision became commonplace in Southeast Asia. All of that served to make the clubs and bars of Manila, in essence, a system engineered to produce vocalists who sounded exactly like Paul McCartney or Steve Perry.

. . .

In a world where the Filipino lead singer of an American rock band wows crowds in Chile, it’s the connected who shall inherit.

Pineda just might be the ultimate “bridge figure,” a term that Zuckerman uses to describe someone who can help explain one cultural background to someone from another culture. This could be a business executive who grew up in India but was raised in the United Kingdom. Or it could be an American student who has decided to settle in the Bolivian highlands.

In short, Zuckerman takes us on a journey that explores how even in our hyper-modern, over-connected, crazy-fast world, we need to take extra steps to make sure we’re exploring people, places, and stories around us that we otherwise wouldn’t know about.

NCAA searches for new low by denying Marine eligibility

by gguillotte
Steven Rhodes is a 24-year-old Marine sergeant. He finished his five-year commitment to the armed forces this summer and called up Middle Tennessee State’s football coaches and asked if they had a spot for him as a walk-on. They happily accepted the 6’ 3”, 240-pound veteran and have been using him as a tight end and defensive lineman during practice. Great story, right? Well, it would be, except Rhodes isn’t eligible to play this season because he took part in an intramural league while in the service. He received no money to play in some extremely disorganized games.

Deleting zombie photos from iPhoto

by Iljitsch van Beijnum
Not photos of zombies, but photos that just won't die off your harddrive.

Recently I noticed when I delete photos from the iPhoto trash, iPhoto doesn't necessarily delete the image files from its library. My iPhoto library is the single biggest thing on my MacBook Air's hard drive, and it's the reason I had to pay extra for a 256GB SDD rather than use the stock 128GB one. I'm in the habit of taking a bunch of shots of every subject to make sure at least one has the correct focus, exposure, and is level. All this is to say I have a lot of extra photos that I need to get rid of.

But as I noticed, sometimes iPhoto doesn't delete photos when you empty the iPhoto trash. It just removes them from its database so they're no longer visible without deleting the actual image files. Those files still use up disk space—to the tune of 10 GB, in my case.

It's not clear to me why iPhoto fails to remove unwanted images from its library, but it looks like this started to happen when I switched from downloading images off my camera using the USB cable to plugging the SD card directly into my computer (not sure if that's a relevant data point though).

Tales of Game's released the first video featuring pre-alpha gameplay for Barkley 2, the direct role-playing sequel to 2008's Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden.

The Mystical Realm of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 - Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie - Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa (the game's full title) takes place in the year 666X, where an amnesiac ball-player must find the Cyberdwarf to recover his memories. Tales of Game's calls it "a coming of age story" about love, hope, betrayal and redemption. The video, which you can watch above, features a look at the game's puzzles, battles and futuristic setting.

Barkley 2 was funded via Kickstarter last year; the campaign raised more than $120,000, overshooting its original goal of $35,000. The game is currently being developed for Windows PC and Mac.

AirCast app closes the gap between Chromecast and AirPlay

by Casey Newton
firehose

Koush is on the ClockworkMod team.

There are plenty of things you can stream to your Chromecast, but thanks to copyright worries, locally stored video isn't one of them. At least one developer is hoping to change that, though, with an app that streams video files from your device's Gallery, Dropbox, or Google Drive to your television using Google's $35 dongle.

Developer Koushik Dutta posted to his Google+ page today with a link to an early beta of an application he's calling AllCast. After installing it, you select a locally stored video, tap "share," and stream the video to your Chromecast using AllCast. You can then control video playback using your mobile device.

The app will self-destruct in two days

The app is an early beta, and the current APK will "self-destruct" in two days, Dutta said in his post. It seems likely that Google would try to block apps like AllCast, which could upset its relationships with content providers by make it easier for users to play pirated movies on their TVs. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Still, the enthusiastic response to Dutta's post indicates that the market for apps like AllCast will be strong. Chromecast's inability to support local video streaming is currently the glaring difference between it and Apple's AirPlay standard. The existence of AllCast suggests that gap is about to be closed, whether Google is ready for it or not.

Disney Infinity review: Imagination land

by Brian Crecente
firehose

"the game relies on luck to grant players full access to that virtual toy box of goodies. But where I found frustration, Tristan found enjoyment in the surprise, like the Toy Box rewards were loot drops in an MMO or RPG."

That's the crux of this: this game is geared entirely to addict kids. Fun gameplay is an obligation, not the goal; it's just fun enough to keep this game parked in the console for _infinity_. Adults should be able to see through it quickly, if not immediately. (I gather many won't see through it, though, either for lack of effort or resignation to their fate.)

A starter kit costs $80-$100. You'll be $200 deep just to get the family playing.

I saw my neighbor's kid's box of Skylanders a week ago. Infinity wants to do that, but more profitably and with less effort.

I stole pigs from my son. We had slapfights. We raced helicopters and talking cars. We tossed each other into the infinite more times than I can remember. We played, we created, we giggled.

Disney Infinity, powered by a treasure trove of characters, settings, stories and childhood memories, manages to deliver a game that isn't about any of those things.

Instead, Disney Infinity is about you. It is a toy box dumped onto your living room floor, brought to life by imagination, both your’s and Disney’s. That those precious items, packed away in the game, take so much effort, time and ultimately luck to unlock, is the game’s one major stumbling block.

"if you want to play with a child or friend, you’re going to have to plunk down some cash"

Infinity hopes to live up to its name. A play set brings with it two meticulously detailed plastic figures and a set piece. To access the content, a player places the figures and set piece on the Disney Infinity base and they are brought into the game. In-game, the play sets deliver two sorts of content: a fully-themed open world packed with a campaign and quests, and new items for use in the game’s player-created toy box worlds. While your own toy box creations can mash-up settings and characters, these play sets are designed to be pure experiences. That means you can only use the characters from those play sets in their campaigns. Not a big deal unless you want to play multiplayer. The starter kit only has one character from each set, so if you want to play with a child or friend, you’re going to have to plunk down some cash for new toys before you even get started.

Violet-transMs-incredible-trans

New play sets don't just bring new settings, characters and items, they also include new mechanics. The starter kit comes with three play sets. Pirates of the Caribbean introduces with it swordplay and ship battles. Monsters University delivers pranks, and The Incredibles brings super powers and melee combat. Each of these play set campaigns took my son and I four to five hours to play through.

While the play sets are all essentially add-ons to a single game, we were surprised to find they offered completely different sorts of experiences. There is an underlying similarity to Disney Infinity's play set content, in the way the mechanics behave on a very basic level, along with the game’s general aesthetic. But the play sets quickly took on their own flavor over the course of the campaign.

Infinity-screen-2

Pirates of the Caribbean’s ship-to-ship battles are absolutely stunning — with two players, one can assume control of the ship and the broadside cannons, and the other can run from cannon to cannon blasting away at enemies with more precision. The Incredible’s Metro City was a playground of roof running and super power attacks. Monsters University brings scares and pranks.

But the novelty of all the new things to do or see offered by each additional playset is undermined by their lack of depth. While all three of the starter play sets include campaigns, none of them were very memorable, bar the Pirates of the Caribbean quest, which ended with an epic battle and some amazing loot. They were all light on story and heavy on instruction, and the missions devolved into overly repetitive bunches of tasks and objectives. We could only change someone’s costume, scare the freshmen or blow up robots so many times before we wanted to move on.

This plays into one of Disney Infinity’s biggest problems: Unlocking item for its Toy Box.

The Toy Box in Disney Infinity is a blank slate, a massive field designed to be filled up with your imagination, or pre-loaded with the creations that come with the game. It is the most significant element of the game, the most fun and certainly the best reason to buy Disney Infinity. But after nearly 20 hours of play, beating three campaigns and then some, I still can’t access the best bits of the Toy Box.

After 20 hours of play, I still can't access the best bits of Toy Box

This is partly because I’m unlucky and because the game relies on luck to grant players full access to that virtual toy box of goodies. But where I found frustration, Tristan found enjoyment in the surprise, like the Toy Box rewards were loot drops in an MMO or RPG.

He also enjoyed the Disney Toy Box Vault's "spins." While players can unlock some items by playing through the campaigns, the bulk of those items, including the most powerful gadgets, have to be unlocked through "spins" in the Disney Toy Box Vault. Spins are earned when you level up characters, complete a campaign, complete an adventure, or finding them in capsules spread throughout the toy box.

Infinity-sidebar-2

Bugs

Over the course of our play, mostly in the Toy Box it seemed, we ran into a few basic bugs. A character dropped half-way through the scenery once, though removing the figurine and replacing him on the base fixed the issue. The game chugs sometimes as you ramp up your design work and on three occasions the game completely froze while transitioning either between scenes or play sets.

Some of this felt like a game that was pushing the console to its limits. In particular, you could occasionally feel the strain when trying to drop mammoth items into the Toy Box, like Cinderella's massive castle.

Once a spin is unlocked, you can go into the vault, pull up a page of 16 items and press the spin button. The vault then randomly awards you with one of the items shown. If you have enough spins you can, in theory, unlock everything on a page. But playing through all three play sets won’t grant you enough to unlock everything.

Barring those locked-away items, Disney Infinity's Toy Box is an amazingly fun experience. The Toy Box manages to strike the perfect balance between user and developer-generated content, giving gamers a place to create that is so full of distraction that the line between playing and creating is completely blurred.

Within minutes of playing in the Toy Box, Tristan and I were creating our own games, not deliberately, but accidentally. We were seeing if I could knock him off of his TRON recognizer with a massive slingshot, or if I could steal all of the pigs he had locked away within his walled fortress.

Infinity-screen-3Infinity-screen-4

Infinity feels like it's pushing you to buy more play sets

Creating is fairly simple. You flick through pages of categories and items with button presses via Disney Infinity's Spark mode; once selected you can rotate and place the item, stacking them up to build your own creations or, in some cases, just using their creations as playing fields. That means you can flip through basic building blocks, enemies and villagers, decorative plants and items like signs, or use pieces from themed play sets, like racetracks, castles or towns. You can also unlock items that change the sky, spawn monsters or drop toy capsules.

On top of those many basic items, costumes and characters Disney Infinity includes powerful objects that have pre-assigned simple, selectable behaviors. Players can connect these special items together and give them basic rules, like when someone steps on this tar trap, play music from that boom box, or when someone kicks that soccer ball into that goal, change the score on the scoreboard. There are also cameras you can unlock that will allow you to fix a perspective to create side-scrolling games or top-down games.

It feels like this is tied to a push to get gamers to buy more play sets, unfortunate if true. That Disney Infinity also supports power discs and item discs — add-ons that can be placed under a character’s base to give them buffs or unlock new things — only strengthens that feeling when you have to buy them in blind packs. Either by bad luck or design, I was only able to unlock a few of these special items 20 or so hours into the game. That’s a lot of spins, and a lot of bad luck.

Wrap Up:

Disney Infinity nails the feeling of play

Disney Infinity is a wonderful game that mashes together the best of collectables, cherished childhood memories of playing with toys and Minecraft-esque creation into a beautiful package, and then locks it up behind what I found to be an aggravatingly vague system of luck and grinding — and what my son found an exciting and rewarding game of chance.

But we both loved what Disney Infinity provides: a place to play, to create, to giggle ... and yes, maybe swear. While the play sets feel a little light in content, their inclusion in the Toy Box extends the experience well, infinitely. The game doesn't quite nail those moments of carefree child's play found in every real world toy box, but it gets closer than any other game we've played.

Disney Infinity was reviewed using a pre-release Xbox 360 copy and play sets provided by Disney. You can find additional information about Polygon's ethic's policy here.

Notch shelves space game 0x10c, but its legacy lives on in fan project

by Sophie Prell
Markus "Notch" Persson, creator of the legendarily successful Minecraft, has shelved his spaceship management/space exploration/space-y stuff game 0x10c, but a group of dedicated fans wants to bring it back... kind of. 0x10c was put on ice back in April due to a "creative block," but Persson told viewers of a Team Fortress 2 livestream this week that it would never be coming off said metaphorical ice, as he had no future aspirations for it. Naturally, some fans were upset. Others took it upon themselves to make sure the game was made, even if they had to do it themselves.

Shane Dalton, Project Lead of the 0x10c revival, told USGamer that he and his team "didn't really look into" why Notch cancelled the game. "We just sort of looked at the project and were like, 'Okay. This is a community project now.' We're not using any of his old code, his name or anything," he said. Dalton's team also isn't using the game's name, and instead will be referring to it as "Project Trillek" for now. Dalton and his team also have no plans to monetize the game once it's released.

All that seems to be staying the same between 0x10c and Project Trillek is Persson's core gameplay concept, where humans must navigate space and manage their spaceship, which features a fully-functional 16-bit CPU.

Update: It has come to our attention that the team behind Project Trillek does not plan on using 0x10c's original story concept. The text of this article has been updated accordingly.

Here Are All the Different Ways People Die Behind Bars

by Michael Riggs
firehose

"Between 2000 and 2011, about half of suicides (48 percent) and a third (32 percent) of heart disease deaths occurred within the first week of detention. More than a fifth of AIDS-related deaths (22 percent) and more than a third of cancer deaths (38 percent) occurred after 6 months of detention."

On the HBO show Oz, set in a fictional state prison, the leading cause of death is homicide. In real life, the leading killer of state prison inmates is cancer, followed closely by heart disease and then liver disease. Homicide doesn't even crack the top 10. The same is mostly true for local jails, except instead of heart disease or cancer, suicide makes up the plurality of deaths.

The infrequency of homicide behind bars is one takeaway from the Bureau of Justice Statistics' new report, "Mortality in Local Jails and State Prisons, 2000-2011." Here are some other noteworthy facts about dying while incarcerated ...

... in jails:

  • From 2000 to 2010, the suicide rate for white inmates was at least three times higher than the rate for inmates of other races or Hispanic origin.
  • Between 2000 and 2011, about half of suicides (48 percent) and a third (32 percent) of heart disease deaths occurred within the first week of detention. More than a fifth of AIDS-related deaths (22 percent) and more than a third of cancer deaths (38 percent) occurred after 6 months of detention.
  • Between 2000 and 2011, male jail inmates were 1.6 times more likely to commit suicide than female inmates. Female jail inmates were nearly twice as likely as males to die of drug or alcohol intoxication.
... and in state prisons:

  • White prisoners accounted for about half of prison inmate deaths in any single year between 2001 and 2010, and for 57 percent of deaths in 2011. Black inmates accounted for about a third of prisoner deaths in any single year between 2001 and 2011, and for 31 percent of deaths in 2011.
  • Between 2001 and 2011, the female prisoner mortality rate fluctuated from 127 to 172 deaths per 100,000 female prisoners. In 2011, the male prisoner mortality rate was 1.6 times higher than the female prisoner mortality rate.
  • Mortality rates for cancer, heart disease, liver disease, and accidents were about twice the rates for male prisoners than for female prisoners
  • Between 2001 and 2011, black state prisoners (8 per 100,000) committed suicide at about a third of the rate of white state prisoners (25 per 100,000).
  • The homicide rate among prisoners age 55 or older was 2 to 3 times higher than for prisoners ages 18 to 44. The accident-related mortality rate for prisoners age 55 or older was at least 2.5 times higher than for younger inmates.
