Students gleefully teach admins that mobile device management is hard

by Lee Hutchinson

"send a school-provided iPad home from school with that teenager and there's a good chance it will come back with its security restrictions blown wide open"

Put an iPad in a teenager's hands and the adolescent will quickly try to figure out the limits of what can and can't be done with it; send a school-provided iPad home from school with that teenager and there's a good chance it will come back with its security restrictions blown wide open. This is what has happened with students at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles, which, according to the LA Times, has suspended its school-wide rollout of iPads after nearly 300 students "hacked" their school-provided devices to remove app and browser limitations.

Based on the information provided in the LA Times article, it appears that the Los Angeles Unified School District relied on simple ActiveSync profile restrictions in order to apply security policies to the students' iPads:

Roosevelt students matter-of-factly explained their technique Tuesday outside school. The trick, they said, was to delete their personal profile information. With the profile deleted, a student was free to surf.

ActiveSync profiles are one of several ways to manage security policies on iOS devices—with them, system administrators can provide not just a connection to an organization's Microsoft Exchange infrastructure, but also enforce passcode and remote wipe standards, limit Web browsing, and enforce remote installation of apps, as well as many other parameters. An ActiveSync profile is easily installed—and it's also easily removed.

Lit Professor Who Doesn't Teach Books by Women Is Surprised That Offends People

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy

David Gilmour, a Canadian author and professor at the University of Toronto, said in an interview published Wednesday that he "teach[es] only the best" writers. The best writers, by his estimation, do not include women. Or, he specifies, the Chinese. Nor does it include "much on the Canadian front." Predictably, these comments were not well-received. So Gilmour decided to explain himself in a second interview on Wednesday: "I'm absolutely surprised, but I’m also extremely sorry to hear that there are people who are really offended by it," he said. Gilmour also instructed his students to find another professor if they want to learn about female authors. "If you want women writers, you go down the hall," he said.

Gilmour has a new novel out called Extraordinary, and it's up for the Giller prize. In his apology, Gilmour notes that the book's protagonist is a woman, and that he hopes his apology will help smooth over any hard feelings between him and the potential readers of that book who were offended. But if Twitter is any judge, the response to his defense may have had the opposite effect:

"It was a careless choice of words. I’m not a politician, I’m a writer" HAHA WAIT WHAT DOES A WRITER DO AGAIN http://t.co/22pLVhon3f

— Silvia Killingsworth (@silviakillings) September 26, 2013

David Gilmour: ‘There isn’t a racist or a sexist bone in my body’ http://t.co/LVoaKK15mV ...et voila, he is presented with some rope.

— rachelsklar (@rachelsklar) September 26, 2013

For reference, here are Gilmour's original comments, the ones that caused trouble for him in the first place:

I’m not interested in teaching books by women. Virginia Woolf is the only writer that interests me as a woman writer, so I do teach one of her short stories. But once again, when I was given this job I said I would only teach the people that I truly, truly love. Unfortunately, none of those happen to be Chinese, or women. Except for Virginia Woolf. And when I tried to teach Virginia Woolf, she’s too sophisticated, even for a third-year class. Usually at the beginning of the semester a hand shoots up and someone asks why there aren’t any women writers in the course. I say I don’t love women writers enough to teach them, if you want women writers go down the hall. What I teach is guys. Serious heterosexual guys. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Chekhov, Tolstoy. Real guy-guys. Henry Miller. Philip Roth.

In the National Post's follow-up interview with the author, given to the publication's skeptical books editor, Gillman provides several excuses for his remarks, which he also believes were misinterpreted.. "It’s got nothing to do with any nationality, or racism, or heterosexuality," Gilmour says of his author choices. Here are some of the other reasons given:

He was speaking in French at the same time. "This was an interview I gave sort of over the shoulder. I was having a conversation, in French, with a colleague while this young woman was doing this interview. So these were very much tossed-off remarks," he said. He added that at the time, he probably got careless with his words because he was "more concerned about [his] French accent than [he was] in actuality what [he was] saying to her."

He teaches Truman Capote: "I’m the only guy in North America who teaches Truman Capote, and Truman Capote was not what you’d exactly call a real heterosexual guy. So I really don’t know what this is about." Later, Gilmour adds: "I think anybody who teaches Truman Capote cannot be attacked for being an anti-anything."

Blame the journalist: Gilmour was interviewed by a woman, and he brings into question her motivations here, claiming that the remarks above were, mostly or partially, a joke. "This is a young woman who kind of wanted to make a little name for herself, or something," he says. "I assumed that the journalist in charge knew when I was joking, and knew when I wasn’t."

"Almost all my students are girls." But Gilmour says that this experience won't make him reconsider his syllabus. "If someone wants a course on Margaret Atwood or Alice Munro, I could put it on my curriculum, but I won’t teach it as well and as passionately as some of the teachers down the hall." Meanwhile, someone has responded as Gilmour's woman down the hall. She's not interested in teaching books by David Gilmour. Gilmour, when pressed, names exactly two female authors he likes: Alice Munro and Virginia Woolf (notably, that omits fellow Canadian Margaret Atwood).

Like some other high-profile professionals who have said careless or sensitive things in a public forum, Gilmour would just like us to get to know him better before judging. "There isn’t a racist or a sexist bone in my body, and everyone who knows me knows it," he explains. The intent of his words, he emphasizes again and again, were misunderstood. But there's little room for Gilmour to talk around his very direct remarks on the value of female writers, and what that says to his apparently woman-filled classrooms. His comments touch a nerve, in his industry and outside of it, one that his call for understanding here will likely do little to correct.

New Kinect can understand two people talking at once

by Sinan Kubba

everything is always listening beat
every technological advance made with kinect now just sounds creepy

The new Kinect for Xbox One can pick up two people speaking at once and discern what each one is saying. Kinect Sports Rivals studio Rare sounded off on the sensor's features via a new video, as shown by Microsoft Corporate VP Phil Harrison to the audience at the Eurogamer Expo in London today.

"It can not only hear two people speaking at once and understand two people speaking at once," said New Technology Lead Developer Nick Burton, "It can also see if their mouths are moving in a completely dark room. And that allows us to do crazy levels of detail."

Included with every Xbox One, this Kinect is certainly a significant upgrade from its predecessor. The new sensor can detect 25 various joints for 6 different people, recognize which player is using which controller, estimate players' heart rates, map faces to 1,400 points, and tell you if you're too fat. Wait, one of those is the Balance Board... we bet the new Kinect can do that too, but we probably shouldn't give it any more ideas.

Nokia’s outgoing CEO has a great excuse for not returning his €19 million bonus

by Leo Mirani
firehose

'Nokia’s CEO explained he is in the middle of a divorce. According to Helsingin Sanomat, Finland’s largest subscription-based newspaper, Finnish law states that “the property that a couple had at the moment that the divorce proceedings are initiated must be shared equally.”

"If one of the two gives away property or, e.g. renounces the right to money that he or she is entitled to, that partner can be required to pay the spouse half of the property that was relinquished."

It is unclear when Elop initiated divorce proceeding and how that might affect the bonus. Moreover, Elop’s family lives in the United States, so Finnish law may not apply anyway, and we don’t know the details of any pre-nuptial agreement he and his wife may have had. All of which is simply to say that Elop’s excuse seems more like a polite way of saying to Nokia: “So sue me.” '

Stephen Elop has had enough of people trying to deprive him of his bonus.

The Finns are not happy with the €18.8 million ($25.5 million) bonus being handed out to Nokia CEO Stephen Elop as a result of the sale to Microsoft of Nokia’s devices business. In fact, they’re pretty mad. Trade union leaders are aghast (paywall), newspapers are outraged, and even the prime minister thinks it’s “quite outrageous.”

Worse, it turns out that Risto Siilasmaa, Nokia’s chairman, misled the press when he said Elop got the same deal as his predecessors, when that was not in fact the case. Anger boiled over. Siilasmaa’s protestations that 70% of the bonus is being paid by Microsoft, to which Elop is returning, have made no dent.

Something had to give. Over the weekend, Nokia asked Elop if he would return the money or at least consider accepting a smaller amount. Elop declined. The reason? Nokia’s CEO explained he is in the middle of a divorce. According to Helsingin Sanomat, Finland’s largest subscription-based newspaper, Finnish law states that “the property that a couple had at the moment that the divorce proceedings are initiated must be shared equally.”

NBA Jam lead designer tweaked code against Chicago Bulls

The lead designer of Midway's basketball arcade game, NBA Jam, Mark Turmell tweaked the game's code so close matches against the Chicago Bulls would favor his Detroit Pistons team, according to an interview with ESPN Magazine.

"It's true, but only when the Bulls played the Pistons," Turmell told ESPN, when asked if the ratings of Scottie Pippen slipped under certain conditions. "If there was a close game and anyone on the Bulls took a last second shot, we wrote special code in the game so that they would average out to be bricks. There was the big competition back in the day between the Pistons and the Bulls, and since I was always a big Pistons fan, that was my opportunity to level the playing field."

NBA Jam was developed in 1993 and saw releases across numerous platforms, including arcades, SNES, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Game Boy and Sega Game Gear during its lifetime. Gameplay consisted of 2-on-2 basketball and was one of the first sports games to feature NBA-licensed teams and players.

Study says five percent of Americans find the internet pointless

by Amar Toor
firehose

The great big middle finger of usability

The majority of Americans use the internet with at least some regularity, but according to a new study from the Pew Research Center, there are still many who see no use for it in their everyday life. Pew's survey, released earlier this week, finds that 15 percent of American adults don't use email or the internet at all. Among this offline population, 34 percent say the internet is simply "not relevant" to their lives, while another 32 percent say they find the web too complicated, risky, or cumbersome to use. An additional 19 percent of non-internet users said they couldn't afford to own a computer or connect to the internet.

As with previous Pew studies, internet use varies significantly across demographic groups, and age brackets, in particular. Among Americans aged 65 and older, 44 percent do not use the internet, compared to 17 percent of adults aged 50 to 64. Income and education levels play a role, as well; 41 percent of people without a high school diploma are offline, as are 24 percent of people with a household income under $30,000.

Internet use is the same across urban and suburban areas, where just 14 percent of adults are offline, but slightly more adults (20 percent) go without the internet in rural areas. Rural coverage has been a focus of internet service providers and the Obama administration, which launched a program earlier this year focused on expanding broadband access to schools nationwide and to rural areas, in particular.

F9371e955dca47cba9195c25f65a80e0

The reasons for which people choose to abstain from the internet have fluctuated over recent years. In 2010, nearly 50 percent of offline adults said the web had no relevance to their lives — far higher than any other reason for not using the internet. This year, nearly the same percentage of respondents cited relevance and usability as primary reasons for staying offline, while slightly less blamed their absence on price levels.

Yet even offline adults admit that the internet plays at least a tangential role in their lives; 44 percent of non-internet users say they've asked a friend or family member to look something up for them online, while 23 percent live in a household where other family members use the web. Overall, 33 percent say they've had at least some exposure to the web, but very few offline adults have a desire to make the internet a part of their lives; 92 percent of those surveyed said they have no interest in going online or using email.

A Cut Above: Surgeon Simulator Adds SPACE SURGERY

by Nathan Grayson

By Nathan Grayson on September 26th, 2013 at 1:00 pm.

Hah, medical school? What's that? No seriously what is it

In space, no one can hear you scream. Typically, that’s very bad news seeing as games, TV shows, and movies have incontrovertibly proven that the universe is crawling with slavering teeth monsters that want to replace our insides with their writhing, gelatinous young. However, if you’re an implausibly incompetent space surgeon, I believe you can actually make a solid case for the silence of the vacuum working in your favor. After all, who’s going to find out? Plus, do medial malpractice rules even apply outside the jurisdiction of, well, Earth? It’s perfect! Thus, Surgeon Simulator 2013‘s new outer-space DLC makes complete, absolute, 100 percent non-absurd sense. Oh, but there’s more to it than that. Developer Bossa’s latest nip and tuck also kicks off a new ARG that apparently hides “Top Secret World-Stopping Secret Content™”.”

Here’s the meat of the DLC, per Bossa’s announcement:

“Bossa Studios announced today that an update for Surgeon Simulator 2013 will send bungling amateur surgeon Nigel into the orbital operating theatre for more zero-gravity mayhem. Players will now be able to perform Brain Surgery and Kidney Surgery in space, and have the chance to earn a total of 18 new Steam Achievements along the way.”

But if you dig a little deeper – yeah, just toss out that lung; it’s probably not doing anything important – you’ll find a brand new alternate reality game titled Codename: Trisha. Surgeon Simulator’s Steam community has already put together a trail of VCR tapes and telephone numbers, but apparently that’s only just the beginning. So yes, probably get on that. Whatever lies at the end of the wonderfully convoluted tunnel is sure to be very, very silly.

Also, it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Surgeon Simulator’s gone to space. Thus, I leave you with this very amusing video of the organ-obliterating sim’s secret space mission.

Could Wonder Woman make her movie debut in the Man of Steel sequel?

by Alasdair Wilkins
firehose

'A top-secret, incredibly vague casting call has reportedly been sent out to agencies, looking for an actress who appears to be physically strong and somewhere between 25 and 35. While Warner Bros. and the movie’s production team is keeping mum about… well, about everything, the reported chatter at some of the agencies is that this casting call is actually for the part of Wonder Woman.

Now, we only have industry scuttlebutt to go on here – and, technically speaking, not even insider industry scuttlebutt – but Bleeding Cool argues that the secrecy surrounding the casting call means that the character must be very important, and Wonder Woman would fit the bill, most likely in some sort of small role that would set up a spin-off movie.

Of course, the more likely interpretation, assuming the actual casting call is even legit, is that the part is actually a villain of some sort. Still, I guess it’s officially not impossible that this movie will introduce not just the latest incarnation of Batman but also the third member of DC Comics’ core trinity. But “not impossible” is as far as I’m prepared to go with this one, for now.'

Could Wonder Woman make her movie debut in the Man of Steel sequel? The final Hunger Games movies add a bunch of new castmembers. Thor 2 director Alan Taylor explains why Tom Hiddleston and Christopher Eccleston make the perfect villains. Orphan Black begins filming its new season. Will Fox's Commissioner Gordon show Gotham actually have anything to do with the Gotham Central comic? Spoilers!

"What we see through social media is a generation of ignorant social activists. Young men and women..."

firehose

"Blogs relaying damaging misinformation written by individuals who can’t seem to be bothered to read a newspaper"

lol u funie

What we see through social media is a generation of ignorant social activists. Young men and women all too willing to care about and defend something they don’t truly understand and refuse to educate themselves further on because they assume the limited information they receive has been vetted by someone more knowledgeable than themselves. This happens on both sides of the fence, with both conservatives and liberals.

I’ve seen arguably intelligent young men and women stand up at banquets and rallies, demanding answers about things like healthcare, DOMA, federal military actions. Asking questions about things they’ve seen on Facebook, on twitter, things that they’ve taken little to no time to research for themselves, and they look like fools. No matter their age, they paint themselves with a red mark that announces ‘I’m not mature enough to be here, to discuss these issues’.

But even so, it isn’t truly about age. It’s about social awareness. You are not discounted until you make a mistake. Say the wrong thing or quote the wrong statistic. Until then, your legitimacy remains intact.

Tumblr is like this.

I’ve seen people furious over gay rights legislation that doesn’t actually exist. Wars that haven’t happened. Most recently text posts with tens of thousands of notes alleging that China and Russia are going to go to war with the US over Syria.

Blogs relaying damaging misinformation written by individuals who can’t seem to be bothered to read a newspaper or use google properly. This is a crippling trend, and no one sees it.

These people get untold attention and affirmation until one person with a large enough follower count points out the flaw in their argument. Corrects the mistake, and shifts the tide. But this doesn’t fix the thousands of people who liked and reblogged the original post. The damage is done.

If there is one thing I’ve learned from working on political campaigns, very little is more damaging than an activist who argues only one side of the story without recognizing the existence of the other; because your opinion, no matter how solid and seemingly factually based, is invalid the second your audience realizes they know more than you.

And the result of all of this is a generation of young activists who don’t understand why they aren’t being taken seriously.

Shellie Zimmerman, 26, also said she stands by her account of a Sept. 9 altercation with her husband at the house they shared in Lake Mary. She told a 911 dispatcher that her husband was threatening her with a gun.

The dispute took place just days after she filed for divorce. Shellie Zimmerman, her father and a friend were removing items from the home when her husband showed up and began taking photos.

"I didn't see a gun, but I know my husband," she said. "I saw him in a stance and a look in his eyes that I've never seen before. His shirt was half-way unbuttoned and he was putting his hand in his shirt and saying, 'Please step closer, please step closer.' So I think that just logically I assumed he had a gun on him."
