Lightweight James Bond Can’t Seem to Handle His Alcohol in This Comedy Sketch

by Justin Page

I’m a big boy and I can do what I please. Give me a vodka martini with cheese.

Lightweight James Bond” can’t seem to handle his alcohol in this comedy sketch by Pete Holmes. 007 becomes increasingly incoherent while filming as he drinks “real martinis in each take.”

James Bond goes from smooth to sloppy.

Rob Ford's lawyer: Mayor might not have been smoking 'crack’ in video | Toronto Star

by gguillotte
“We have a gentleman who spoke to Toronto Star reporters. And if you were that gentleman, would it better to be saying we have the mayor smoking something like crack cocaine, or cigarettes or marijuana? Which do you think the press would be interested in? How much money can you get if someone said ‘I’m smoking marijuana or cigarettes’ as opposed to smoking crack cocaine?” Morris said to AM640 host John Oakley.

School Removes Wrecking Ball After Students Imitate Miley | TIME.com

by OnlyMrGodKnowsWhy

At Grand Valley State University, the former campus landmark was a pendulum statue that looked just like the wrecking ball from Miley Cyrus’s latest music video. Students at the Michigan school had been riding it for years, but school officials say problems escalated after the release of “Wrecking Ball,” with students recreating Miley’s naked moves. The installation has been removed for safety reasons, according to school officials. In response, students are protesting in various ways, including gathering around the empty installation space, singing “Wrecking Ball,” and speaking out using the Twitter hashtag #ReinstallTheBall.

Taiwan's New Special Forces Uniforms Are Wearable Nightmare Fuel

Taiwan's New Special Forces Uniforms Are Wearable Nightmare Fuel:

familycarlyle:

Like the Samurai’s mempo, the uniforms of many of today’s Special Forces units play dual roles. Not only do they protect the wearer’s face and conceal his identity, they terrify the pants off of the enemy. Take the newly unveiled uniforms of Taiwan’s Special Forces for example. They look like something out of Army of Two.

Carlyle soldiers protect their identity to better protect you…

Boston Red Sox victory heals psychic wounds of marathon attacks - CNN.com

slop

Now the Boston Red Sox have won their third title in nine years -- at Fenway, no less -- but this victory seems to hold deeper meaning than just winning a sporting crown. It's being compared to a divine balm to heal one of the darkest recent memories in America: the terror bombings at the Boston Marathon last April.

**5 THINGS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SLUT SHAME THIS...

firehose

via Danniel.schulz

**5 THINGS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SLUT SHAME THIS HALLOWEEN**

1. Calling women sluts/whores/skanks is a form of sexism.
When it comes to costumes, clothing, and sexual behavior, women are judged by a very different rubric than men.  When a guy has a lot of sex, he’s a stud.  If a woman behaves the same way, she’s a “whore”, “dirty”, “used up”, and doesn’t deserve to be treated with respect.  While people may use terms like “manslut” or “manwhore”, the consequences for the “manwhore” are not nearly as extreme.  People don’t see him as unworthy of respect.  He won’t be degraded, bullied, or have lies and rumors spread about him.  His reputation won’t be destroyed.  Being a “manwhore” is dismissed as him *~just being a guy~*.

Because slut shame is a result of sexist ideas about what a woman “should” be or is allowed to do/be in the first place, women slut-shaming each other is a form of internalized sexism.  This is where a woman believes sexist things about herself and other women.  It can be very disruptive and harmful to women’s relationships with each other.

These are some of the ways slut shame is entrenched in sexism.

2. Slut shame limits women’s freedom.
Calling women names and degrading them when they *break the rules* about how a woman is SUPPOSED to dress or behave ensures that women don’t have the same freedom men do.  They are not allowed to dress or do what they like…unless they want to pay the price of being bullied or dehumanized for it.

3. Slut shame is one of the ways women compete with each other for male approval.
Slut-shaming creates a divide between women.  There are the “slutty stupid ones” with “no self respect” and there are the “proper ladies” who deserve to be treated as human.  Instead of building women up and cultivating healthy friendships, slut shame turns women against each other so that the slut-shamer can prove she’s “not like that” and therefore worthy of respect.  It puts women into harmful categories based on nothing more than how someone dresses or is perceived by others.

4. Slut shame is a form of bullying.
Girls who break outside the mold of what they are supposed to do/be sexually and are thusly labeled sluts are at a higher risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide.  There have been many suicides that started with bullying in the form of slut shame. RIP Felicia Garcia, Amanda Todd, Phoebe Prince, Hope Witsell, Stacey Rambold’s unnamed victim, and all the other young women who have tragically taken their own lives because of the heartlessness and sexism of their peers.

5. Slut shame leads to rape, sexual assault, and sexual violence.
Because people see “sluts” as unworthy of respect, she is therefore not entitled to say no.  In this mentality, “sluts” become a target of harassment, assault, and even rape.  After the violence, she is then blamed for it.  After all, she was just a dumb slut….she asked for it, right?

This Halloween (and always) be a good person.  Respect women, respect their choices, and check yourself when you find yourself thinking or saying someone is a slut.  It’s a deeply held attitude about women that we all learn from our sexist culture, and it is vital that we all take the time to unlearn it.  These attitudes are more vicious and dangerous than they might appear.

xx

meanwhile, in Portland

Today I donated $1,150 to Planned Parenthood from the funds Lucy Knisley and I raised by selling the original artwork and limited edition prints of our Party With Planned Parenthood illustration. More details about our project can be read here.

We’re not done yet, though!

We haven’t sold out of all the prints yet, so we can still raise more funds for Planned Parenthood.

If we sell another seven prints, we’ll have raised $1,500!

And if we sell out, that number will be raised to $1,650

Party With Planned Parenthood
I will continue to make a lump sum donation at the end of each month until we sell completely out.

Want to see some of the work that went into creating this illustration? Lucy and I have a high-speed video to give you a taste of how this artwork came to be:

Party With Planned Parenthood from Erika Moen on Vimeo.

Thank you so much to everyone who’s bought a print or the original artwork. I’m so excited we can all pitch in to help an invaluable organization and make the world a little more beautiful through the arts– at the same time ;)

Apple Turning to Samsung as Low Display Yields for Retina iPad Mini Continue

by Richard Padilla

"Apple would be returning to Samsung as a display supplier due to its technological advantages and production capacity."

A new report from Japanese business newspaper Nikkei [Google Translation] (via CNET) has shed light on the production issues surrounding the forthcoming Retina iPad Mini, with Apple now turning to rival Samsung as suppliers Sharp and LG Display have failed to produce an adequate supply of displays for the new tablet.

Apple CEO Tim Cook stated earlier this week during the company's fourth quarter earnings call that that it was “unclear whether we will have enough for the quarter or not,” with a report on Wednesday stating that Sharp’s low yield of displays was reportedly tied to the shortage. ipadminispacegray
It was notably reported back in August that Samsung had become the primary iPad display supplier, as the Korean company along with LG and Japan Display was said to be supplying 7.9-inch panels for the next-generation iPad mini. The Wall Street Journal also commented in July that the Retina iPad mini would use screens from Samsung, LG, and Sharp.

Apple has been reported to be seeking to reduce its reliance on Samsung as a component supplier due to continuing tensions between the two companies as they have increasingly become top competitors in the mobile device market. However, it has been reported for several months now that Apple would be returning to Samsung as a display supplier due to its technological advantages and production capacity.

While supplies of the Retina iPad mini will be constrained, supplies of the iPad Air are expected to be more plentiful, with the company will offer same day in-store pickup for orders of the new full-sized tablet. As noted by Apple during the introduction of the second-generation iPad mini, a Retina display has been one of the most requested features for the smaller iPad since its release last year.

Western Digital Warns External Hard Drive Customers Over Mavericks Data Loss

by Jordan Golson

NewImageWestern Digital has emailed customers warning them about possible data loss when connecting external hard drives to Macs with OS X Mavericks installed.

The MacRumors Forums, Western Digital's forums, and Apple's Support Communities all have threads about lost data after connecting Western Digital external hard drives to computers after updating to Mavericks.

In an email to customers, Western Digital warned about using its WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager, and WD SmartWare software products with Mavericks and suggests customers uninstall those applications before upgrading to Mavericks, or, if they already have upgraded, to uninstall those applications immediately.
Dear WD Registered Customer,

As a valued WD customer we want to make you aware of new reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to Apple's OS X Mavericks (10.9). WD is urgently investigating these reports and the possible connection to the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and WD SmartWare software applications. Until the issue is understood and the cause identified, WD strongly urges our customers to uninstall these software applications before updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9), or delay upgrading. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks, WD recommends that you remove these applications and restart your computer.

The WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager, and WD SmartWare software applications are not new and have been available from WD for many years, however solely as a precaution WD has removed these applications from our website as we investigate this issue.

Sincerely,
Western Digital
Most of the complaints seem to center around Western Digital drives, but the company does say other drives could have issues as well.

Thanks Jackie!

Apple Inserting Entries for Its Own Stock iOS Apps and Services Into App Store Search Results

by Eric Slivka
firehose

rofl

Apple has begun inserting special entries for some of its own stock iOS apps and services into search results for users on the iOS App Store, notes MacStories, which first picked up on the addition from a Tweet by Lukas Burgstaller.

safari_messages_app_store_results
The results attempt to steer users searching for apps related to certain topics toward Apple's built-in offerings, perhaps reminding users that their needs may already be met without needing to resort to App Store apps. The special results can be seen with a variety of search terms, including exact matches for Apple's offerings such as "safari" and "siri" but also with more general terms such as "SMS" or "movies".
If you search for common terms like “web”, “SMS”, or “movies” in the iOS 7 App Store you’ll see special search results for Apple apps like Safari, Messages, and iTunes with a large icon, a description, and a link to learn more or open an app (such as Safari). These results appear on the App Store for iOS 7 devices (I wasn’t able to display them on a Mac using iTunes) and, in my tests, they also worked for queries like “browser”, “messages”, “cloud”, “internet”, “Siri”, and “text”. I’ve tried several other queries, but I couldn’t see results for other apps like Reminders, Calendars, Mail, Photos, Music, or Notes.
Depending on the app or service showing up as the result, users can either directly open the app or be directed to pages on Apple's site to learn more.

MacStories notes that while the new feature is a good way for Apple to share information with new users who may be unfamiliar with all of the apps and services included on iOS devices, it could cause concern for third-party developers who might see it as Apple trying to discourage users from downloading their apps.
