In Spring Semester, I'm running a reading group -- which seems to be a formal variant of a study group -- at Harvard Law School on "Security, Power, and the Internet. I would like a good mix of people, so non law students and non Harvard students are both welcome to sign up.

This is from 2006 -- I blogged it here -- but it's even more true today.
Under a top secret program initiated by the Bush Administration after the Sept. 11 attacks, the [name of agency (FBI, CIA, NSA, etc.)] have been gathering a vast database of [type of records] involving United States citizens."This program is a vital tool in the fight against terrorism," [Bush Administration official] said. "Without it, we would be dangerously unsafe, and the terrorists would have probably killed you and every other American citizen." The Bush Administration stated that the revelation of this program has severely compromised national security.
We've changed administrations -- we've changed political parties -- but nothing has changed.

Switcheroo is an ongoing portrait project by Canadian photographer Hana Pesut where fashionably dressed couples are asked to swap clothing for a pair of portraits sent against an identical backdrop. While the premise is pretty simple, the results are often highly amusing because of all the subtle details and unusual juxtapositions. Giant feet crammed into tiny high heeled shoes, the seemingly nervous faces of cross-dressing in public, or even the genuine grins of subjects who clearly enjoy the project as much as the photographer.
The portraits shown here are among the most recent from a trip to Japan, and you can see many more on her Tumblr. Pesut also gathered many of the best portraits into a book. (via My Modern Met)

NFL fines roundup: Golden Tate draws $7,875 penalty for taunt

A 30-yard wave at the Rams defense that earned a 15-yard penalty for Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate also earned the fourth-year player a $7,875 fine from the league, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
The biggest fine of the week, though, went to Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who earned a $21,000 fine for striking Jets wide receiver Stephen Hill with the crown of his helmet, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. The fine is the third of the season for Burfict, who has already racked up a $52,000 bill in 2013.
Three Broncos players earned fines, according to Florio, as defensive linemen Kevin Vickerson and Malik Jackson each drew $7,875 fines for late hits, and linebacker Wesley Woodyard was charged $15,750 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Similar $15,750 fines for helmet-to-helmet hits were dished out to Falcons defensive back William Moore and defensive end Osi Umenyiora, according to Rapoport. Rounding out the Week 8 fines were $7,875 charges for Bills defensive end Mario Williams, Browns cornerback Joe Haden, Jets wide receiver David Nelson and Lions tight end Joseph Fauria.

Blizzard revives Blackthorne, offers it free on Battle.net
firehosehuh
Those itching to relive the mid-90s will be happy to hear that Blizzard has re-released its cult classic action-platformer Blackthorne. Even better? It's absolutely free.Having been developed before Blizzard decided to focus exclusively on the Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo franchises, Blackthorne is unlike anything else from the developer. It drops you into the boots of Kyle, a denim-clad cliché of everything teenaged boys imagined to be "cool" circa 1994, as he traverses an alien planet hoping to rescue hostages and look especially rad while blasting enemies to bits. While the story only exists to support the action, most won't care once they discover the "no look, behind the back" shotgun attack.
If any of this piqued your interest, why not download the game? Anyone with a Battle.net account is now able to pick up Blackthorne from Blizzard for the very attractive price of totally free. There are no caveats here; once you've downloaded the game, it's yours to keep.

Reilly. The L.A. Philharmonic—conducted by Beck’s father, David Campbell—will accompany them. Eyeglass company Warby Parker, for which Beck recently designed a pair of frames, is presenting the show. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, Nov. 2.

The problem was even bigger at first as founder Dave Gilbert discovered that, after issuing a press release to the media about the giveaway earlier this week, the generated keys unlocked Wadjet Eye Games' entire catalog. After sorting that issue out, Gilbert discovered that buyers were "ordering multiple copies of the game - hundreds at a time. And collecting Steam keys for reselling later," he told Red Door Blue Key. Gilbert asked his sales provider, BMT, to create an IP-detecting Steam code generator page, though it didn't stop resellers from masking their IPs to continue their thieving efforts.
After removing the link to the Steam key generator, Gilbert returned today to find that because the generator itself still existed, some 30,000 keys had been stolen. He announced via Twitter that Steam has disabled the keys generated after midnight and that, per his request, no bans will be issued to those that redeemed the Steam codes.
Blackwell Deception is the fourth game in the Blackwell adventure series, and was first made available on Steam in January 2012. The game can be purchased for $10, though Wadjet Eye Games is also offering a four-game bundle of the series to date for $20.
