Ace Hotel Co-Founder Alex Calderwood Dead

by Marjorie Skinner

I found out late last night that Ace Hotel group co-founder Alex Calderwood has died. The hotel put up a statement on its blog, which is as simple as they come:

Yesterday Alex Calderwood passed away.

Alex was our teacher, mentor, guru and most importantly our dear friend.

We will miss him.

Cause of death has not been officially disclosed, but there's talk that drug or alcohol use may have been a factor (Calderwood, who was 47, was open about the fact that he'd struggled with substance abuse, including having spent time in rehab). I am not positive that I ever met Calderwood, but the Ace has certainly been an important force and source of support for the city's creative community, as it is/will be in Seattle, New York, L.A., Palm Springs, London, Panama, and wherever else it chooses to expand. It's always been so much more than a hotel, and I credit its arrival with turning an under-used corner of downtown Portland around, spurring along what's now a vibrant enough neighborhood to warrant a silly name like "the West End."

Lead Contractor On Health-Care Web Site Led By Execs From Troubled IT Company

by timothy
thomst writes "The Washington Post's Jerry Markon and Alice Crites report that 'The lead contractor on the dysfunctional Web site for the Affordable Care Act is filled with executives from a company that mishandled at least 20 other government IT projects, including a flawed effort to automate retirement benefits for millions of federal workers, documents and interviews show. CGI Federal, the main Web site developer, entered the U.S. government market a decade ago when its parent company purchased American Management Systems, a Fairfax County contractor that was coming off a series of troubled projects. CGI moved into AMS's custom-made building off Interstate 66, changed the sign outside and kept the core of employees, who now populate the upper ranks of CGI Federal.'"

Adobe's colossal password leak becomes a playable crossword puzzle

by Bryan Bishop

Adobe's been embarrassed over the past few weeks after it was revealed that some 150 million customer records were leaked online — and that Adobe had been using some questionable methods to protect that information in the first place. In a clever spin, some of that information has been turned into a playable crossword puzzle that helps remind people just how insecure common password choices can be.

Ben Falconer put together the project, called simply Adobe Crossword, after being inspired by the web comic XKCD. The collection of 10 crossword puzzles use the most common 1,000 passwords found in the leak as its answers, with up to 50 user-supplied clues serving as the questions. There's a heavy dose of the obvious — "adobereader," "password1," and even "0123456789" all make appearances — though there's also a mixture of car and pop culture references.

Adobe came under fire because although the passwords themselves had been encrypted the user emails and password hints had been stored as text. Falconer writes that he can't be absolutely certain that the answers in his puzzles are correct, but given the hints and the general tendency for people to be less than careful when it comes to picking passwords his choices appear to be quite clearly correct. In either case, the crossword serves as a gamified reminder of the importance of picking unique — and secure — passwords for every online account you use.

If you happen to notice your own password in the puzzle, Falconer writes, you should stop using it immediately. "The current best practice for passwords," he writes, "is to generate a unique random password for every login and use a password management service such as KeePass, RoboForm, or LastPass."

AMC may finally be bringing Preacher to television

What is going to fill the television-viewing hole left by Breaking Bad? It may very well be a TV adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's foul-mouthed, blasphemous, supernatural road comic Preacher.

Auction House Sells Fascinating Album of Over 1500 Vintage Mugshots

by Lori Dorn

Swann Auction Galleries in Manhattan recently sold a fantastic album of mugshots from the early 20th century. Among the over 1500 convicts whose records are documented in this book, were members of the International Workers of the World aka “Wobblies“.

A spectacular mugshot album with nearly 1500 entries, including several depicting members of the International Workers of the World (“Wobblies”), in addition to a cross-section of crimes from across the country, including California, Oregon, Iowa, Arkansas, and New York (and Canada), likely assembled for surveillance and perp identification.

Based in New York, the team is compromised of a group of bikers along with an amazing group of volunteers including local police, private investigators, and lawyers. Rescue Ink is all about zero tolerance when it comes to animal abuse – and they’re not afraid to get a little in-your-face to prove it. This group of seemingly tough guys have a soft spot for all creatures and will stop at nothing, within the bounds of the law, to save animals from dire and desperate situations; they rescue fighting dogs, confront animal abusers, work to find abandoned and neglected animals loving homes, and investigate stolen animals.

Not qualifying for the World Cup can cost a country hundreds of millions of dollars

by Roberto A. Ferdman
Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal

Teams around the world vying to get into the World Cup aren’t just gunning for the limelight; they’re also competing for financial boosts worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Portugal’s national soccer team is set to face off against Sweden’s today, in what will be an especially momentous World Cup qualifying match. A series of under-performances by both teams has left no margin for error for either team—whichever one wins will compete in Brazil next summer; whichever one loses will not. Of course, not every team with a high international ranking makes the cut; the 32 teams chosen are selected based on geographic groupings. But missing the World Cup would be a big professional disappointment for whichever squad fails. And it would be especially embarrassing for a country like Portugal, which is currently ranked 14th in the world.

It would also be a big financial blow. According to marketing school IPAM (link in Portuguese), which calculated the impact a World Cup qualification would have for Portugal, missing the tournament would mean foregoing an estimated €200 million ($269 million) for national industries like retail, restaurants and bars, airlines, and marketing and public relations. Portugal not making it into next year’s World Cup would also mean no Cristiano Ronaldo on the big stage, one of the world’s best and most marketable players who is sponsored by companies like Nike and Herbalife.

Mexico, whose national team effectively secured a bid to the World Cup on Nov. 13, nearly fell victim to this fate. A loss to New Zealand in their do-or-die match would have meant missing the tournament—along with hundreds of millions of dollars in forgone profits. “If I summed up all of the factors, both direct and indirect, macro and micro, without exaggerating the loss for the entire industry, the loss would be about $600 million,” a director at Mexican sports marketing firm Rogelio Roa told ESPN (link in Spanish). In Mexico’s case, not qualifying for the tournament would have weighed more on the country’s lucrative sports broadcasting business whose payouts for TV rights (sometimes these are owned by teams, sometimes by media companies or regional soccer governing bodies) depend on the size of the audience, Roa explained.

For its part, England could lose more than £100 million ($161 million) in missed sponsorship deals and other revenues.

Soccer jersey sales, beer consumption, marketing revenues and internet usage all tend to jump during the World Cup, but without a national team to root for, there’s less incentive for a country’s soccer fans to splurge. These sales don’t just affect the revenues flowing to teams and their national industries, they affect multinational players, too. Adidas, the official jersey maker for the World Cup, is highly dependent on the sales success of specific team jerseys. Had Mexico failed to qualify, for example, the company would have had to forfeit a sizable chunk of its soccer jersey sales, since the Mexican team’s outfit is Adidas’s best selling international jersey. Companies like Coca-Cola, Visa and Anheuser-Busch all invest millions of dollars in ad campaigns and sponsorship deals, and often with specific teams and regions in mind. Forfeiting sizable chunks of those national and region-specific audiences could wipe out big advertising and investment opportunities.

Wonderland | Stanley Wong

Abortive building projects are the ‘fruits’ of two to three decades of fruitless chase after a future, an opportunity, desires and dreams in a liberated society, at a time of seemingly limitless economic expansion. Buildings can be aborted, so can projects. Plans may be aborted. so may hopes. Ties between people could be aborted, so could relationships. Life, i guess should not be aborted.

class-struggle-anarchism: It’s true what he says though - there...

class-struggle-anarchism:

It’s true what he says though - there is no subject position from which it’s ok to talk about inequality - if you’re poor you are doing it out of jealously, if you’re not poor you’re doing it out of guilt/saviour complex, if you are young it’s just a phase, if you’re old you are hankering for times long gone and trying to recapture your youth, if you’re not well educated you just don’t understand the complexity of the situation, if you are well educated you’re in an academic bubble divorced from reality, if your politically apathetic you’re not allowed to complain, if you’re politically active you’re just trying to push your own sectarian agenda…

For every possible type of person there’s an established reason why your opinions on inequality are invalid. That’s not an accident.

Anonymous has reportedly been hacking US government computers for almost a year

by Bryan Bishop

According to Reuters, a recent FBI memo admits that hacking collective Anonymous has been accessing multiple US government computer systems and stolen information over the past year. The alleged memo is said to have been distributed yesterday, and calls the intrusions a "widespread problem that should be addressed." The Department of Energy, the US Army, and the Department of Health and Human Services are all mentioned as targets.

The attacks started last December

The attacks are said to have started last December, using an exploit present in Adobe's ColdFusion software. After gaining access, the perpetrators reportedly installed back doors in the systems so they could regain access at a later date; Reuters states that many of the compromised computers were still being accessed as of last month. The FBI memo tell IT personnel how to evaluate whether their systems have been compromised.

As for the stolen information, an October 11th email from Kevin Knobloch, the Energy Secretary's chief of staff, reportedly states that information on at least 104,000 DOE employees, family members, and contractors had been pilfered. The email also warns that details on nearly 2,000 bank accounts had also been stolen.

The Anonymous attacks are said to be tied to the case of Lauri Love. Love is the alleged UK hacker that was charged in October of having compromised computer systems for NASA and the State Department, to name just a few. According to the report, some of the attacks have been mentioned publicly before as part of the Anonymous Operation Last Resort campaign — though the FBI memo reportedly cautions that "the majority of the intrusions have not yet been made publicly known."
