Daniel Boria had a simple dream. He just wanted to promote his line of cleaning products. Sure, he COULD have taken his product to trade shows and state fairs, perhaps he could have pitched it to QVC -- but no. He was thinking bigger, and higher. Boria strapped himself to a lawn chair full of balloons and voyaged across the Calgary skyline. Now he's in trouble, according to CBC News.
Calgary Police have charged him with one count for mischief causing danger to life and one count for mischief to property under $5000.
The lawn chair pilot, who says he's a skydiver, intended to parachute himself into the Calgary Stampede.
There might be more than one Daniel Boria online trying to sell his own cleaning products, but this video from May could be the man himself.
'Oregon ranks as the No. 2 worst state to make a living, plummeting 11 spots from the prior year. The state's cost of living index is nearly 30% above the national average at 128.5. The average income is $46,850. In addition to high unemployment, Oregon has one of the highest rates of workplace safety incidents in the nation (4.2 workplace incidents per 100 workers). In March 2015, Oregon noted that there was a slight rise in worker fatalities in 2014 from the previous year. The estimated state tax on average income is $3,981.50.'

State and local taxes don't get covered as much as federal ones, but they're still very, very important. Indeed, a new study finds that they can have significant effects on income inequality. Fed researchers Daniel Cooper, Byron Lutz, and Michael Palumbo estimate how major state taxes — sales taxes, income taxes, and motor fuel taxes — have affected inequality from 1984 to 2011. The differences are striking: while in some states, like Oregon, state taxes cut inequality significantly, in many southern states like Tennessee, they actually exacerbated it.
The states in dark red did the most to increase inequality through their tax systems, and the ones in dark green did the most to decrease it. Overall, though, state tax systems increased inequality in the US over the period in question. Unsurprisingly, the authors found that states doing the most to fight inequality tended to have progressive income taxes, whereas states without income taxes tended to make inequality worse. Motor fuel taxes made inequality moderately worse, they find, while exempting food and/or clothing from sales taxation, and providing a state-level Earned Income Tax Credit, can cut inequality significantly.

Portland police are looking for a suspected thief they say has an unusual mode of operation: Slipping into health clubs, working out, then raiding the lockers rooms of valuables.
So far, police say the man -- Daniel Leroy Turner, 51 -- has stolen from six health clubs and community centers:
Lloyd Athletic Club, 815 N.E. Halsey Street
Mt. Scott Community Center, 5530 S.E. 72nd Avenue
Nautilus Health Club, 10466 S.E. Main Street, Milwaukie
East Portland Community Center, 740 S.E. 106th Avenue
Eastside Athletic Club, 9100 S.E. Sunnyside Road

Police believe that Turner gains entry to health clubs by either sneaking in or buying a guest pass. Police say that on occasion, Turner has exercised at the clubs before breaking into lockers and stealing credit cards and cash.
According to a probable-cause affidavit filed by a Multnomah County prosecutor, a man told Portland police on Jan. 23, 2015, that his wallet, cell phone and keys were stolen from the Lloyd Athletic Club. His truck also was missing from the club's parking lot. Several hours later, police found the truck and spotted Turner crouching next to the tire, according to the affidavit.
An officer grabbed hold of Turner's hand and tried to handcuff him, but Turner turned and ran -- pulling the officer along with him for "a number of" steps, according to the affidavit. After a struggle, police were able to handcuff Turner, the affidavit states. (Permalink)

Why would he have worried about a backlash against his anti-Mexican racism, when corporate America and the Republican Party let him get away with ugly racist birtherism regarding President Obama for years? Maryland police are responding to a report of a shot fired at the Walter Reed Medical Center campus in Bethesda. Naval support activity in Bethesda is currently in lockdown mode though there has been no official confirmation of a shooting.
Through a series of tweets, Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks said officers were asked to assist federal partners at Walter Reed after reports of a single gunshot.

The Red Sox induced just two ground ball outs during the contest. Ortiz was involved in one of them, but flipped the ball to pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez for the putout. The second came when the next batter, Jake Marisnick, was called out on a bunt attempt due to batter interference.
Amazingly, every other out against the Red Sox was either a flyball or line drive to a position other than first base. That is pretty amazing!

The company I work at just got acquired by a bigger company earlier this month. As a result, we had a big celebration party at a restaurant nearby. I was chatting with some new people at the company, asking them what attracted them to work here. Most of the answers were the same generally — people wanted to work at a place that cared a lot about the quality of their software. One guy started naming off all the company culture buzz words like “TDD”, “agile”, “continuous integration”, etc. After he finished listing it off though, he said apologized to me for using all the big words and big concepts that I wouldn’t understand. (Assumption #1: I wouldn’t understand technical jargon.) Usually, I feel compelled to tell someone that I’m a software developer, and I get what they’re saying, especially since I’ve been around the company for over two years. This time, I decided to take a different approach and see how far this would go. It was equally hilarious and horrific.
I didn’t particularly make it obvious that I understood what he was talking about, but I didn’t play into not knowing any of it either: “The company is a big agile shop, and everyone really does care about good software.” For some whatever reason, he responded by telling me that it was “nice that even the secretaries knew the lingo.” (Assumption #2: I was a secretary.) I had a noncommittal response saying that they hired a lot of smart people.
We talked about college a little bit, and I told him how I went to school at MSU and U of Washington. He “nicely” told me that he heard that they promoted secretaries to quality assurance roles, and that one day, in a couple of years, I could work hard and take extra classes to finish my degree and get to that position myself. (Assumption #3: I was unhappy in my current role. Assumption #4: I didn’t finish college.) I told him that I had finished college because I’m so gosh darned proud of it that I forgot that I was trying to see how far he’d take the assumptions. He added that he bet that I regretted my humanities degree because he was making a lot of money with his engineering degree. (Assumption #5: I had a humanities degree)
After a little bit, another friend of mine joined the conversation, and we chatted about my team. Somewhere in that, his face fell when he realized that I was a software developer. He interrupted our conversation and asked why I let him embarrass himself for so long. Note — he never apologized. However, he was so uncomfortable with being wrong that I hope he’ll remember that next time when he starts talking to a female coworker.
My hope is that the shame from being wrong will stay with him. It doesn’t seem to phase people when you instantly correct them on their assumptions. I’m not entirely sure if this was the best approach for this, but I get so many similar conversations all the time, I think I’ll have plenty of opportunities to try new approaches.

In the early afternoon on the 4th of July, as most Americans were on the verge of slipping into a food-induced nap, the New Horizons space probe went into a nap of its own. According to scientists, the probe’s onboard computer “detected an anomaly,” and it went into safe mode, resorting to using its backup computer to report back to its concerned earthling watchers.
NASA says it could take up to “one to several days” to get New Horizons back to full capability. Until then, its scientific data gathering abilities are scuttled. The probe is still on track to perform its flyby of Pluto, but if the folks back here on Earth can’t figure out how to pull it out of safe mode, then it won’t be able to gather any data as it speeds past the celestial body into the darkness of the beyond. Combine that pressure with the up to nine hour communication latency with the 3 billion mile-away probe, and you’ve got an engineering problem for the books. Best of luck, NASA.
