One Shot Makes a Single Cup of Miso Soup in One Minute at the Push of a Button

by Kimber Streams

One Shot

Japanese online retailer Marukome has created One Shot, a machine that makes a single serving cup of miso soup in one minute — similar to a Keurig coffee maker, but for soup. It makes up to 75 cups, and users can choose the strength of their soup and add various mixes of dehydrated vegetables for flavor. The One Shot will go on sale at the end of January.

This time, 24′s Jack Bauer only needs 12 hours to save the world

by Commentary
Jack Bauer is on the run from the CIA and Chloe O'Brien has turned into an Edward Snowden-esque character.

PASADENA, California—Jack Bauer has run out of locations in America to wreak havoc on, so the star of 24 is headed to London.

The former Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) agent, last seen in 2010 when 24 ended its run after eight seasons (each of which covered 24 chaotic hours of his life, in real time), will return to FOX this spring. 24: Live Another Day, debuting May 5, is a 12-episode “limited series” that will still play out in real time and encompass a 24-hour day. Executive producers says they’ll skip time in between episodes.

The production starts shooting in London in a couple weeks, and star Kiefer Sutherland admits that things could get ugly for commuters during filming. “I’m anxious about it. Traffic there is difficult. We plan to be shooting outside. Things will be blowing up,” said Sutherland, speaking at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. “I’m sure we’ll be hated by a large portion of London for snarling up their traffic. I apologize in advance.”

While 24 faked previous locations like New York City and Washington, DC, still shooting those seasons from its home base Los Angeles, it was essential to shoot Live Another Day in London, executive producer Howard Gordon told Quartz. “It’s harder to fake London. …Nothing beats being there and ultimately we really wanted to shoot the city. The other ones we were able to cheat. Washington was cheatable, New York was less easy to cheat and I think maybe a little less successful. Between that, tax breaks and the fun of it, we said ‘let’s do it.’”

Live Another Day will pick up four years after the events of season 8, where Jack is still “a fugitive of high order,” said executive producer Manny Coto, and is being hunted by a CIA agent, played by Chuck’s Yvonne Strahovski. Meanwhile, his longtime CTU ally Chloe O’Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub) has “turned against the government and has turned into a radical, Snowden-like character,” said Coto, meaning that Jack and Chloe are now pitted against each other.

Yet despite Bauer’s significant backstory, “you can pick this series up without having seen season 8, or the show at all,” said executive producer Manny Coto. That said, it’s not just you: Not even the producers can keep track of all the show’s various twists and turns over the years. “Sometimes we have to check Wikipedia” to see if the characters are still alive, says Coto.

While Sutherland and the producers spent the years after 24’s conclusion trying to launch a feature film, those plans has been backburned in favor of the “limited series,” which follows a different script than the movie, Sutherland said. Live Another Day is conceived as a standalone limited series,  but “if this ends up rebooting the show and causes a film to be made, so be it,” said Sutherland.

And if that happens, no major city will be safe from explosions and snarled traffic.

The Post-Mortem, Divisional round: Andrew Luck's dirty little secret

by Celebrity Hot Tub
firehose

'I believe not scoring through 75% of the game is a bad strategy. ... My "we will score before the fourth quarter" offensive approach is going to revolutionize the game.'

If we can just reorganize the playoffs so the Colts only play AFC South teams, they'll definitely win the Super Bowl!

Finally, you can rest easy, Steelers fans. Those cheating Chargers, who clearly conspired with inept and corrupt officials to steal your playoff spot, have been eliminated. (You still have to be depressed, Chiefs fans. I don't really know what to do about that.)

New Orleans 15, Seattle 23

Time of Death: Don't worry, Marques Colston. I still think you can win the starting QB job in Minnesota this offseason.

Cause of Death:

1. Before this weekend, 60 other teams had been shut out in a playoff game through three quarters. Only two went on to win that game: the 1978 Falcons beat the Eagles 14-13, and the 1948 Eagles beat the Chicago Cardinals 7-0. The Saints, who hadn't entered the fourth quarter of any game with zero points since 2002, became team 61. It's a bold stance, I know, but I believe not scoring through 75% of the game is a bad strategy.

2. Through those first three quarters, the Saints went one-for-seven on third down and averaged a near-meaningless 0.86 yards per play. That's a major failure when you consider New Orleans ranked fifth in the league this year in third down conversions and second in yards per third down play.

3. Yes, Marshawn Lynch is a nightmare personified, but we shouldn't ignore the contributions of one of Seattle's less intimidating players - kicker Steven Hauschka, who hit all three of his field goal attempts in less than ideal weather conditions and has only missed two kicks all year, one of which was blocked. Hauschka's 94.3 percent field goal rate this season is the best in franchise history and ranks fourth all-time amongst kickers who have attempted at least 30 field goals in a season.

Indianapolis 22, New England 43

Time of Death: This was just a seven-point game after three quarters, and then LeGarrette Blount took the first Patriots touch of the fourth 73 yards for a touchdown.

Cause of Death:

1. The Andrew Luck Colts have a dirty secret. (No, it is not his horrific beard, which is FAR too public by any standard of societal decency.) In Luck's two seasons, the Colts are 10-2 against AFC South opponents ... and 13-10 against everyone else. His touchdown to interception ratio is 2:1 within the division and 1.28:1 outside it. [REMAINDER OF DISCUSSION REDACTED BY FEDERAL SPORTS OPINION LAW FOR DENIGRATING ANDREW LUCK]

2. That said, Andrew Luck doesn't play defense - yes, you're right, he is a coward - so we can't blame him for letting the Patriots putting up their second highest rushing yardage total in team playoff history. The Colts were particularly terrible at stopping the run on first down, where New England averaged over seven yards a carry and had twelve attempts that gained at least four yards.

3. Four times in this game, the Patriots drove over 70 yards for a touchdown, something Indianapolis had only allowed 19 times during the regular season. The most demoralizing part was that, when all of those drives started, Indianapolis was only trailing by a touchdown. Now the Colts have to spend the offseason listening to Jim Irsay's karaoke practice.

Ur such a beautiful fish, floppin on the summer sand...lookin 4 the wave u missed...when another 1 was close at hand...ur such a stupid girl.

— Jim Irsay (@JimIrsay) January 8, 2014

Carolina 10, San Francisco 23

Time of Death: Down thirteen points, the Panthers had the ball at the San Fran 28 with 4:30 to play. And then only the first part of that sentence was true, after Cam Newton threw an interception to Donte Whitner.

Cause of Death:

1. Panthers not named Cam Newton did nothing on the ground against the Niners, averaging just 2.78 yards per carry. Only two Carolina runs gained ten yards or more, and both were by Newton; this is where San Francisco's defense shines, having allowed only 34 rushing attempts that went for double digit gains during the regular season.

2. On the other side, the Panthers only managed to sack Colin Kaepernick once all day, a surprisingly low total considering they racked up 6 sacks on 28 Kaepernick dropbacks when these teams met in Week 10. Sacks turned out to have a strong correlation to wins for Carolina this season - they went 10-0 in games where they recorded at least three sacks, and 2-5 when they didn't.

3. Carolina might have had the strangest "long" drive of the year midway through the third quarter, a thirteen play, 8:20 affair that somehow only netted 31 yards of field position. Of the 55 drives of 8:00 or longer this year across the NFL, only two others didn't gain 50 yards. The 2013 Carolina Panthers: Taking A Long Time To Go Nowhere.

San Diego 17, Denver 24

Time of Death: Peyton Manning found Julius Thomas on 3rd and 6 for a 9 yard gain right before the two minute warning, and San Diego's comeback attempt ended without the offense ever getting a chance to tie the game.

Cause of Death:

1. The Broncos went nine-for-13 on third down, but it helped that they only faced an average of 4.69 yards to gain. San Diego only went four-for-12, in large part because they averaged nearly eight yards to gain to pick up a first down.

2. Those conversions allowed Denver to hold the ball for a very, very long time - the Broncos averaged 8.75 plays and 4:25 of game time per drive. The league averages this season were 5.7 and 2:33 and, yes, while time of possession may sometimes be a meaningless stat, I'm reasonably certain the Chargers would have appreciated an extra two minutes of clock on their side.

3. Oh, that "playoff teams held scoreless through three quarters" stat we mentioned re: the Saints? Chalk the Chargers up as team 62. Seriously, somebody make me a head coach. My "we will score before the fourth quarter" offensive approach is going to revolutionize the game.

'One young man is dead, and a woman is missing and presumed dead after both fell into the freezing Chicago River trying to find a dropped cellphone early this morning.

A third man, who also ended up in the river, remains hospitalized.

Chicago Police say a 26-year-old man dropped his phone into the water, and slipped along the icy riverwalk trying to retrieve it.

A 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, who were with the man, entered the water trying to help him. Witnesses called 911, and rescue crews pulled the two men out of the water but have not been able to find the woman.'

Ackman gets something to cheer about with Suntory-Beam deal - Reuters

firehose

http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2014/01/13/after-beam-deal-few-big-liquor-deals-left/

'the most attractive acquisition targets could be two smaller, boutique spirits groups.

Campari, a private, family controlled group, owns Skyy Vodka and Wild Turkey, in addition to its marquee brand. And Bacardi, another private group, owns Dewar’s, Grey Goose and Bombay Sapphire. Both companies could be targets for the bigger groups.

“Bacardi especially could be targeted in the future,” Mr. Edwards said. But the same issues that constrained Diageo and Pernod from pursuing Beam — dominant market share on the one hand, and limited flexibility on the other — could pose challenges to any such deal.

“The landscape is getting relatively settled,” Mr. Faucher said. “If you look at Pernod, Bacardi and Brown-Forman, there is a heavily family ownership component to each of these companies that makes further consolidation tricky. The question is, at some point do these smaller family owned companies feel the need to consolidate?”

In lieu of any more big deals, other likely targets include any brands or groups that are present in China or India, two of the fastest growing spirits markets. Diageo is in the middle of a messy attempted acquisition of India’s United Spirits, and analysts expect more international deals to come.

“I think there will definitely be further consolidation in the industry, both in the U.S. and globally,” Mr. Edwards said.

Beyond that, there is a long tail of smaller distillery groups, such as Buffalo Trace Distillers, maker of Eagle Rare bourbon and Pappy Van Winkle, which could be attractive targets for big groups looking for growth. However, given the nuances of the spirits market — scale does not always result in substantially higher profit margins — many of these distillers may be content to remain small and privately held.'

HTC says the One X, One X+ won't get any more Android updates

by Josh Lowensohn
firehose

R.O.F.L

Bad news for HTC One X and One X+ owners who thought they might get future Android updates: HTC has just said users on both phones will be stuck on Android 4.2.2 from here on out. The One X was HTC's flagship device for 2012, and featured a 720p display, polycarbonate body, and dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor. The follow-up, the One X+, was designed as a souped-up version, bringing with it a larger 2,100mAh battery, more storage, a faster 1.7GHz Tegra 3 processor, and an updated front-facing camera. The news was confirmed by HTC's UK Twitter account earlier today, and comes just 14 months after the One X+'s release.

The company expanded on that in a statement to The Verge:

We can confirm that the HTC One X and One X+ will not receive further Android OS updates beyond Android 4.2.2 with Sense 5. We realize this news will be met with disappointment by some, but our customers should feel confident that we have designed both devices to be optimized with our amazing camera and audio experiences.

While HTC did not go into further detail about the decision, the lack of support may center on lackluster sales and the different hardware configurations of the X and X+. HTC pulled a similar move with the One S last year, a device that on paper was still quite capable of running newer versions of Google's Android.

New Orleans's Street Music Is at Risk

via Overbey: "Every time I read something even vaguely sensible in the Corner I have to do a double-take."

After Hurricane Katrina, when so many people nationwide (and even worldwide) rallied with such fervor to find ways to resurrect New Orleans, it was obvious that one of the biggest reasons so many people care so deeply about the Cradle of Jazz is that, indeed, this city's rich culture of indigenous and often spontaneous music is a treasure that must not be allowed to die. But somehow, New Orleans's City Council seems to have forgotten everything its members ever knew (or at least should have known) about how that musical culture develops. It doesn't come from pre-planned, top-down, carefully managed

Late last summer, a video started making the rounds online of a seriously intense clog dancer absolutely getting down to Siouxsie And The Banshees’ “Kiss Them For Me.” It was a surreal little clip, and one that simultaneously made absolutely no sense and all the sense in the world.

Weird, savvy band that it is, Elf Power saw the clip and immediately reached out to the clogger, Naomi Merchant, to see if she’d be up to hoof it in their new music video. She said yes, of course, and the resulting clip for “Transparent Lines” is below. It’s weird, but in a really great way.

Newswire: Christine McVie is back in Fleetwood Mac, 15 years after retiring

After 15 years away from the group, Christine McVie has rejoined Fleetwood Mac. McVie ostensibly retired from the band back in 1998, but during a concert last night in Hawaii, Mick Fleetwood confirmed she’ll be returning in the near future. McVie popped up at a Fleetwood Mac show last September and recently told The Guardian that she misses the band and, were they to ask her to rejoin, she “would probably be very delighted”—making this news not all that surprising, but more than welcome all the same.

There’s no word yet on whether this reunion precedes more tour dates, a new record, or just a super awkward backyard BBQ. But Mac fans will undoubtedly welcome whatever manifestation of the reunited lineup that emerges. Nevertheless, The band is, at least officially, on temporary hiatus, while McVie’s ex-husband, John McVie, undergoes treatment for cancer.

Dropbox messed up OS upgrade, caused two days of downtime

by Jon Brodkin
firehose

IMO this is worse than if it was an external attack

Dropbox went down Friday night after some normally routine upgrades went awry. While the company restored most functionality within three hours, problems for some users persisted until Sunday.

The outage was followed by spurious claims from hacking groups that they had successfully infiltrated Dropbox. There was no evidence to support such claims, and Dropbox quickly explained on Friday that the outage was due to an internal problem. Dropbox head of infrastructure Akhil Gupta then followed up last night with more details on what caused the downtime:

We use thousands of databases to run Dropbox. Each database has one master and two slave machines for redundancy. In addition, we perform full and incremental data backups and store them in a separate environment.

On Friday at 5:30 p.m. PT, we had a planned maintenance scheduled to upgrade the OS on some of our machines. During this process, the upgrade script checks to make sure there is no active data on the machine before installing the new OS.

A subtle bug in the script caused the command to reinstall a small number of active machines. Unfortunately, some master-slave pairs were impacted which resulted in the site going down.

User files were never at risk during the outage, the company said. The databases in question are used to provide services like photo album sharing, camera uploads, and API features.

Silicon Valley’s most generous employer has incurred the wrath of hedge-fund activists

by John McDuling
firehose

'This morning, activist hedge fund Elliot Management revealed it has built a 6.6% stake in the company and is now pressing for change to revive its flagging share price. Among Elliot’s biggest complaints is the company’s “excessive” spending on research and development'

The highest paying employer in Silicon Valley isn’t Google, Twitter or Facebook. Surprisingly, it’s Juniper Networks, which is involved in the relatively mundane business of networking equipment (it competes with the likes of Cisco in the market for switches and routers).

But Juniper’s generosity has come back to bite it. This morning, activist hedge fund Elliot Management revealed it has built a 6.2% stake in the company and is now pressing for change to revive its flagging share price. Among Elliot’s biggest complaints is the company’s “excessive” spending on research and development. In a presentation to investors (p. 12), the fund cites Juniper’s generous salaries to support its claim that the company spends too much.

Elliot wants Juniper to cut costs by $200 million a year as well as streamlining its disparate portfolio of products, and returning up to $3.5 billion in cash to shareholders through buybacks and dividends. That might be good for the share price (Elliot thinks shares could be worth up to $40, compared to $25.50 currently) but not for its engineers’ wallets.
