The world’s taste for whiskey, visualized

by Roberto A. Ferdman
Whiskey liquor store

Japanese beverage giant Suntory is acquiring Beam, which makes Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark bourbons, among other spirits, for $16 billion. The two companies control nearly 10% of the global whiskey market, according to International Wine and Spirit Research. Combined, they will obviously be going after a larger share.

A quick gander at global whiskey consumption helps show where the promise lies. India is far and away the world’s biggest guzzler, owing in part to its large population. Roughly half of the world’s whiskey is drunk by the sub-continent, according to Euromonitor. Most of it is made by UB India, the world’s largest whiskey company by volume.

But when those numbers are broken down per capita, India falls well outside of the picture. France, Uruguay, and the United States soar to the top.

Beam, based in Deerfield, Illinois, is responsible for over 40% of US  bourbon sales by volume, and bourbon accounts for roughly half of the overall US whiskey market. Outside the country, Germany, Australia, and the UK are big consumers of US whiskey.

Play this: 'Catlateral Damage,' a game about cats knocking things over

by Adi Robertson

There's a certain subset of games devoted to letting us break cultural taboos: stealing cars, picking fights with pedestrians, performing all the wanton acts of ultraviolence that polite human society won't tolerate. But for cats, pointless destruction is just another way to pass the time between naps. Catlateral Damage, first released back in late August by Chris Chung, gives you two paws, two minutes, and a room full of fragile objects. What you do with them is up to you. Chung is planning a full game for release sometime in 2014, so check for it on Greenlight in the coming months if you want to continue your catnip-fueled rampage.

Sorry Sweden, Luxembourg is now the most generous country in the world

by Matt Phillips
When it comes to generosity, little Luxembourg has plenty to be proud of.

That’s according to a recent update to data on official development assistance offered by the nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Luxembourg is better known as a secretive tax haven—along with places like the Cayman Islands and Switzerland—than as a leading source of development aid. But it has overtaken Scandinavian nations Sweden, Denmark ,and Norway, which are well-known as generous development donors.

In 2011, Sweden was the most generous donor, according to the OECD’s key metric, which is official development assistance as a share of gross national income. But Luxembourg overtook Sweden this year, thanks to a rise in bilateral grants. As part of a government plan, Luxembourg had made a commitment to keep its development assistance as a share of national income at around 1%.

The three top recipients of aid from Luxembourg are the African nations of Mali, Burkina Faso and Senegal. Here’s a look at the 2012 OECD numbers:

For the record, the OECD’s determination of generosity rests on the aforementioned aid-to-gross national income metric. But in terms of raw dollar giving ,the US is still the biggest source of development aid in the world. The US shelled out $31 billion in development aid in 2012, with top recipients being Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan. By comparison, Luxembourg donated $399 million. On the other hand, the US doesn’t dig too deep in its big pockets, giving just 0.2% of national income in official aid.

TV Club: Bob’s Burgers: “Presto Tina-o”

firehose

featuring a magician named Sazerac

Is it possible for a Tina-centric episode of Bob’s Burgers to be bad? I’d be the first to argue that it’s just about impossible for any episode of Bob’s Burgers to be truly bad—even the slightly disappointing ones are often uproariously funny at points—but to me, Tina is the character that makes the show completely bulletproof. This is especially true for episodes that also prominently feature Jimmy Pesto Jr.

Tina’s crush on Jimmy Jr. is one of my favorite aspects of Bob’s Burgers. Like most shows, it’s incredibly sweet adolescent puppy love but at the same time, it’s not entirely clean and watered down. There is some juvenile objectification of boys (see: the scenes that focus on Jimmy’s butt that always launch a thousand Tumblr .gifs) that is both very funny and very real if you’ve ever overheard a group of teen girls discussing their crushes in a high school ...

'It's not an easy identity to accept as good (perhaps it even isn't)'

Glitch from the Black Lagoon

New Logo and Identity by and for Creature

We are starting the week with a bit of a discrepancy in that I rarely do reviews of design firm's identities but you know I only deviate from my own rules when the subject matter calls for it. So: Established in 2002, Creature is a creative agency focusing on both design and advertising with offices in Seattle, WA, and London and they do rather nice work — we've previously covered their work for District, Seattle's Best Coffee, and their Sofa Kings project was included in the 2011 Brand New Awards. Earlier this month, Creature introduced a new identity for themselves.

[While] the rest of the world wants to get rid of problems, Creature wants to collect them and shape them into beautiful creative solutions. When it came time for a refreshed brand identity, the agency wanted to bring this concept to life. The new design presents Creature as a premier destination where business problems are transformed into Beautiful Problems.

"We pulled visual inspiration from the idyllic hospitality world, then smashed and warped those elements to reflect our experimental, non-linear process." Says Creature Design Director Clara Mulligan.

The refresh includes smeared typography, ethereal horizon lines, glitched-out logos, warm, bright colors and a signature with the words "Courtesy, Quality and Questions." A custom paradiseesque sunrise and sunset was in order, so the agency made their own by creating an average of sunrises and sunsets from over 100 of the world's most incredible destinations. A bright reminder to continually seek creative possibility and newness.

At first glance you might easily be going "WTF?" What design firm in their right mind would purposely have an identity that literally looks like a mistake, files gone corrupt on their way to press or haywire when uploaded online? Without the glitch and distort effect, this would be a perfectly nice identity with a handsome serif typeface, some hip supporting fonts, a soft color palette, and a nice range of applications. But then it would be just like any other design firm with a handsome serif typeface, some hip supporting fonts, a soft color palette, and a nice range of applications. Something a lot of us can do. I'm not saying we are doing it wrong or that this is the right way to brand a design firm but it IS an attention-grabbing way of doing it and there is something interesting about willingly coming across as imperfect.

Once you get past the first impression, the identity is quite solid with a very serious consistency to it. The average of 100 sunsets makes for a great graphic and it looks specially appealing on the back of the letterhead and pairs really well with the main dark, muted blue color. It's not an easy identity to accept as good (perhaps it even isn't) but I do think there is a good amount of merit for attempting a new way of branding a design firm — a task that consistently yields remarkably conservative results.

Tom Brady, Peyton Manning to face off for 15th time since 2001

by James Brady
firehose

not sure how the NFL could get America to care less about football than another Brady-Manning AFC championship and an all-west-coast NFC championship

the upside is no matter what, there'll be a non-white QB with less than 3 years in the league going to the Super Bowl

The New England Patriots and Denver Broncos will face off in the AFC Championship, as familiar foes Tom Brady and Peyton Manning battle for another Super Bowl ring.

SB Nation 2014 NFL Playoff Coverage

The Denver Broncos were successful in beating the San Diego Chargers in a rubber match on Sunday, and with the New England Patriots stymieing the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday, we have our AFC Championship game. It's a matchup of No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, so the system works, but it's more than that. It's a game between two very familiar foes.

Peyton Manning led the Broncos to a 13-3 record this season, while Tom Brady captained the Patriots to a 12-4 mark. What's more interesting at this point, though, is the history between these two players. On Sunday, Jan. 19, Manning and Brady will play each other for the 14th time, and the fourth time in the playoffs.

The first time these two met was in Week 3 of the 2001 season, when Brady made his first career start. He completed 13 of 23 passes for 168 yards against the Colts, winning the game by a landslide. Still, that was more due to Manning's three interceptions than strong play by Brady.

They met again later that season, and the Patriots won big again, this time with the help of three Brady touchdowns, the first time he'd thrown that many in his career.

Brady and the Patriots have been victorious in 10 his 14 matchups against Manning, counting the 34-31 overtime victory in Week 12 of this season. Brady has thrown 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions against Manning's teams, while Manning has thrown 27 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. Brady has a completion percentage of 67.0 against Manning's 62.4 in these matchups.

The most important games among the 14? Why, two AFC Championship games, of course!

In 2003, the Colts played the Patriots in the AFC Championship, and Manning had a horrible game. He threw four interceptions, three of which went to Ty Law, and the Patriots cruised to a comfortable 24-10 victory. Manning was sacked four times in that game, and Brady threw for 237 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

But Manning and the Colts did get revenge on Brady and the Patriots ... three years later. Manning managed to throw for 349 yards and a touchdown in a 38-34 victory in the 2006 playoffs. It an 18-point comeback, which is tied for the fifth-largest come-from-behind victory in postseason history.

Both of those AFC Championship wins led to Super Bowl titles. Here's a look at each game played between these two (asterisk marks playoff games):

As the Emmy-winning head writer for SNL, Seth has established a reputation for his sharp wit and perfectly timed comedy and has gained fame for his spot-on impersonations, unique characters and hilarious spoofing of topical news. A Fox News exposé causes a battle of its own

by Russell Brandom

'Fox News is doing everything it can to discredit the book before its release. The channel has criticized the book for failing to involve them in the fact-checking process'

R.O.F.L

A new biography of Fox News chief Roger Ailes is already stirring up controversy, just days before its release. TitledThe Loudest Voice in the Room, the book offers a peek inside the often-secretive world of the cable news channel, but according to a new piece by David Carr, Fox News is doing everything it can to discredit the book before its release. The channel has criticized the book for failing to involve them in the fact-checking process, and attacked author Gabriel Sherman for doing press on competitors like CNN. Sherman's book paints a grim picture of Ailes' rule over the channel — in one anecdote, he ends a corporate relationship with Google because the company refused to alter negative search results for his name — but the most surprising revelation may be how far Ailes and his allies will go to attack the book itself. "This isn’t a fight about facts," Carr writes. "It is about control."

How Japan’s aging, shrinking population caused a $16 billion whiskey takeover

by John McDuling
firehose

more Suntory/Beam details

Suntory's liquor cabinet runneth over.

Corporate Japan’s relentless march into new territories is back.

Suntory Holdings, the 115-year-old, family-owned Japanese beverage distributor this morning struck a $16 billion deal to buy American whiskey maker, Beam Inc. Barring a rival bid from the likes of France’s Pernod Ricard or Diageo, the two biggest drinks makers, Suntory will now add brands like Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark bourbons, Canadian Club whiskey and Courvoisier cognac to a liquor cabinet that already includes a number of Japanese whiskies and Midori liqueur.

It’s the biggest deal of 2014 so far, and the biggest purchase of an overseas asset by a Japanese company since Softbank bought American wireless carrier Sprint for $22 billion last summer.

Indeed, the rationale behind Suntory’s purchase of Beam is arguably the same one that motivated Softbank to buy Sprint (and potentially soon bid for T-Mobile), and that has forced many other Japanese consumer companies—like brewer Kirin, which secured Australia’s Lion Nathan for $3.3 billion in 2009—to look abroad.

Essentially, Japan is the maturest of mature markets, with a population that is not just aging rapidly, but also shrinking. “Japanese corporate managers are aware of this and recognize that the pursuit of top-line revenue growth must take place outside of Japan,” a report from law firm Skadden said last year.

That being said, outbound Japanese mergers-and-acquisitions activity declined noticeably last year.

That set off some nervousness that the success of Abenomics—prime minister Shinzo Abe’s economic stimulus plan, which has driven down the value of the yen and is beginning to stoke domestic demand—would dissuade Japanese corporates from bingeing on overseas acquisitions. Thankfully, for M&A bankers at least, Suntory’s purchase of Beam suggests otherwise.

EA continues race to the bottom with unexplained SimCity offline reversal

by Ben Kuchera
firehose

R.O.F.L

Maxis has announced the upcoming release of an offline mode for the long-troubled SimCity, and the announcement isn't notable for what it offers, but for what it fails to address.

The official statement from Maxis' Patrick Buechner didn’t address how the addition of offline mode was possible, and that may be the most infuriating aspect of this sudden reversal. All the seemingly insurmountable technical details that were supposed to make this close to impossible have been hand-waved away, although the company did state that it was exploring the possibility of an offline mode as early as last October.

It’s hard to understate how maddening this is, and it’s more evidence that EA and its collective studios don’t know how to communicate to the customers who are out very real money and time due to the mistake of purchasing these products.

The online requirement meant that many people were unable to play the game at launch, and of course refunds were refused. Why should they have to give your money back just because they sold you a non-functioning product? This is video games, where your product doesn't have to work as long as a mealy-mouthed excuse is published on a corporate blog.

Offline wasn’t part of their vision, they said as the servers crashed. The game requires the cloud to operate, they claimed as they offered a "free" game as some kind of compensation for selling a broken product. An offline mode is not possible without substantial work, they said as their player base demanded it.

The company line was that offline modes would never be offered, that was all but impossible, and the idea violated the very spirit of the game.

EA and Maxis would like it if you could just forget about all that. It’s in the past. What’s important is that modding is coming, although the company is aggressive in what you give up when releasing a mod, and how they can use your content and name. From the rules:

Distribution of your Mod in any form constitutes a grant by you to EA of an irrevocable, perpetual, royalty-free, sub-licensable right to use, copy, modify and distribute that Mod (and derivatives of that Mod), and use your name if we choose to, for any purpose and through any means, and without obligation to pay you anything, obtain your approval, or give you credit. You also agree to promptly execute assignments confirming this license upon request from EA.

This mirrors EA’s hackathon policies that forced participants to give up almost every right to their own work, in possible exchange for a tour of an EA studio. Those rules were hastily taken down, and ultimately edited after EA COO Peter Moore was made aware of the issue on social media.

No explanation, no remorse

The company is contradicting itself with the announcement of an offline mode, and the fact that they feel this didn't need to be addressed from the jump is more evidence at how ineffective EA has become in dealing with its own frequent and boneheaded mistakes.

The most frustrating aspect of these blunders is that they don’t need to happen. The original vision of SimCity wasn’t terrible as much as it was based on a number of flawed assumptions and non-functioning tech. Neither issue is rare in gaming or software development, but EA and Maxis doubled down on their approach and the constant reminders that offline play would never be offered. There never seemed to be communication that offered realistic explanations or apologies, even when a modder released evidence that many of the company's statements were falsehoods.

There is no mea culpa here, no evidence that EA nor Maxis understand or care how badly this sudden refusal hurts the already broken trust between the publisher and the people who buy their games. We’re past the point where EA should be wondering why players rush to vote EA the worst company in the world. We can point to situations like this, piled on top of situations like the inept handling of the Battlefield 4 fiasco.

This is why people don’t like or trust EA: It’s not that it looks like the company lied to players or at least actively misled them, it’s that the company doesn’t see anything wrong with suddenly going back on everything it said without any attempt to explain itself or clarify what may have changed

What they can’t do is glaze over these problems, although this has always been EA’s plan when it comes to consumer-hostile practices. Key creatives are fleeing the company, two of the publisher’s largest franchises have suffered massive harm due to terrible launches, and communication on these issues remains murky, if not non-existent.

The company is rotting, the cracks aren’t exactly well-hidden, and upbeat, impersonal PR isn’t fooling anyone. Don't be mad that it looks like EA and Maxis have been lying to you for ten months, get upset because they don't seem to care enough to say why.

they too deal in garbage

Ken Lerer and son Ben are the kings of New York City's venture capital scene, says a new profile in New York Magazine. "The Lerers are a little Mafia-esque," writes author Jessica Pressler, as she listens to them reflect on past successes between drinks at the back of a West Village restaurant where everyone seems to be either a friend or business partner. The duo is invested in 185 NYC startups, after all, and has already cashed out on several of them including The Huffington Post and OMGPop, the maker of Draw Something. More recent investments include glasses-maker Warby Parker and viral news site BuzzFeed. And then there's Thrillist, Ben's successful digital media company for "bros," Pressler says.

The secret to their success? "Ben knew the people who had the ideas [and] Ken knew the people who had the money," writes Pressler. For the full story, head over to New York Magazine.
