The Texas state school board has just wrapped up a long, difficult battle over how to present biology in its public school textbooks. But a new one may be brewing in the state, one focused on taxpayer-funded charter schools that are outside the board's direct oversight. Various reports are emerging that these schools are using material that would be unconstitutional if taught in public schools.
Potential problems made the headlines last fall, when a Salon article described how a parent with a child in one of these schools was surprised to discover that his son was given a textbook that essentially Godwined Darwin by claiming, "Apparently the theory of evolution and its 'survival of the fittest' philosophy had taken root in Hitler’s warped mind." Today, Slate delivered a follow-up that showed that science textbooks weren't much kinder to Darwin's ideas, calling them "dogma" and "sketchy." These statements are backed by outright falsehoods, such as claims that there is no single geological column, the age of the Earth is uncertain, and that there aren't transitional fossils.
Both articles do a bit of investigation into the organization behind these charter schools, ResponsiveEd. It turns out that the company is heavily intertwined with an organization called Accelerated Christian Education, a home-schooling company with a science curriculum that teaches that the Earth was created via a miracle less than 10,000 years ago. (Apparently, that group's biology text argued that the Loch Ness Monster was real, therefore evolution was wrong.)

firehose' "[The rock] obligingly turned upside down, so we're seeing a side that hasn't seen the Martian atmosphere in billions of years and there it is for us to investigate," Squyres said. "It's just a stroke of luck." '
A "jelly doughnut-sized" rock has appeared in front of the Opportunity rover on Mars, and scientists can't figure out where it came from, Discovery News reports. The discovery was revealed by Mars Exploration Rover lead scientist Steve Squyres in a "10 years of roving Mars" keynote at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory last night. "Mars keeps throwing new stuff at us!" he exclaimed, discussing past rover findings, but this time, he meant it literally.
The rock, which scientists have dubbed "Pinnacle Island," appeared in front of Opportunity for one of two reasons, NASA says: the rover flipped the rock as it maneuvered, or the rock landed there after a nearby meteorite impact. Either way, the intrepid Opportunity now has something new to look at. "[The rock] obligingly turned upside down, so we're seeing a side that hasn't seen the Martian atmosphere in billions of years and there it is for us to investigate," Squyres said. "It's just a stroke of luck."

It's time to recognize Khalil Mack as the top outside linebacker in the 2014 NFL Draft.
If Khalil Mack and Anthony Barr traded schools, there probably wouldn't be a debate over which player is the better NFL prospect. Mack has faced an uphill battle to gain recognition during his career at Buffalo, but his senior season should leave no questions about his pro potential. While Barr has put up impressive stats at UCLA, there are still serious questions about whether or not he will ever learn to fully take advantage of his physical tools. For that reason, Mack takes over the top spot in our linebacker rankings.
After the top two, there is still plenty of talent. Jeremiah Attaochu is a player to watch in the coming months, as he could turn some heads at the NFL Scouting Combine. There are plenty of college defensive ends in our outside linebacker rankings and even more could join the list before the process is over.
For now, we have 22 outside linebackers ranked. Here is the full list.

firehosethe Keith David beat has been way too quiet
Welcome to Random Roles, wherein we talk to actors about the characters who defined their careers. The catch: They don’t know beforehand what roles we’ll ask them to talk about.
The actor: With training from Juilliard and a voice that commands respect, Keith David has rarely failed to make an impression as an actor, no matter what part he’s been called upon to play. Over the course of his career, David has done comedy (There’s Something About Mary) and drama (Platoon), sci-fi (They Live) and biographies (The Tiger Woods Story), and even a stint on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Currently, David is assigned to Fox’s new military-themed sitcom, Enlisted.
Enlisted (2014-present)—“Command Sgt. Maj. Donald Cody”

Neal Brennan likes to say that everyone in Hollywood is a future has-been, and he should know: He’s been a has-been three times. As Dave Chappelle’s longtime writing partner, he experienced a few low points by his mid-30s: in 1998 when the film they wrote, Half Baked, flopped, then again following Chappelle’s Show’s dramatic end in 2005. Worse, the second one ended his relationship with the mercurial comedian, at least temporarily. Finally, his first big project post-Chappelle’s Show, a film he directed called The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard, received poor reviews and weak box-office sales. At that point, Brennan had been harboring an interest in stand-up comedy for a few years, so he decided to place his focus there. His credits helped get him into clubs, but as he says, that goodwill only goes so far. That means his upcoming hour special for Comedy Central, Women ...

From hazy Pre-Raphaelite beauty to shadowy baroque allegory, this short film weaves hundreds of years of art history into an amazing and unsettling narrative of human beauty. Directed and animated by Rino Stefano Tagliafierro (previously at BB), it is "a path of sighs through the emotions of life, a tribute to the art and her disarming beauty."
Tagliafierro also has an awesome tumblr full of GIFs.
