DWAYNE MCDUFFIE

(February 20, 1962 – February 21, 2011)

Dwayne McDuffie was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Leroy McDuffie and Edna McDuffie Gardner. He attended The Roeper School and went on to the University of Michigan, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English, then earning a master’s degree in physics. He then moved to New York to attend film school at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. While McDuffie was working as a copy editor at the business magazine Investment Dealers’ Digest, a friend got him an interview for an assistant editor position at Marvel Comics.

Going on staff at Marvel as editor Bob Budiansky’s assistant on special projects, McDuffie helped develop the company’s first superhero trading cards. He also scripted stories for Marvel. His first major work was Damage Control, a miniseries about the company that shows up between issues and tidies up the mess left by the latest round of superhero/supervillain battles.
After becoming an editor at Marvel, McDuffie submitted a spoof proposal for a comic entitled Ninja Thrashers in response to Marvel’s treatment of its black characters. Becoming a freelancer in 1990, McDuffie wrote for dozens of various comics titles for Marvel, DC Comics, and Archie Comics. In addition, he wrote Monster in My Pocket for Harvey Comics editor Sid Jacobson, whom he cites on his website as having taught him everything he knows. In early 1991, he divorced his first wife, Patricia D. Younger, in Seminole County, Florida.

In the early 1990s, wanting to express a multicultural sensibility that he felt was missing in comic books, McDuffie and three partners founded Milestone Media, which The Plain Dealer of Cleveland, Ohio, described in 2000 as "the industry’s most successful minority-owned-and operated comic company." McDuffie explained:

"If you do a black character or a female character or an Asian character, then they aren’t just that character. They represent that race or that sex, and they can’t be interesting because everything they do has to represent an entire block of people. You know, Superman isn’t all white people and neither is Lex Luthor. We knew we had to present a range of characters within each ethnic group, which means that we couldn’t do just one book. We had to do a series of books and we had to present a view of the world that’s wider than the world we’ve seen before."

Milestone, whose characters include the African-American Static, Icon, and Hardware; the Asian-American Xombi, and the multi-ethnic superhero group the Blood Syndicate, which include black, Asian and Latino men and women, debuted its titles in 1993 through a distribution deal with DC Comics. Serving as editor-in-chief, McDuffie created or co-created many characters, including Static.

After Milestone had ceased publishing new comics, Static was developed into an animated series Static Shock. McDuffie was hired to write and story-edit on the series, writing 11 episodes.

His other television writing credits included Teen Titans and What’s New, Scooby-Doo?.
McDuffie was hired as a staff writer for the animated series Justice League and was promoted to story editor and producer as the series became Justice League Unlimited. During the entire run of the animated series, McDuffie wrote, produced, or story-edited 69 out of the 91 episodes.
McDuffie also wrote the story for the video game Justice League Heroes.

McDuffie was hired to help revamp and story-edit Cartoon Network’s popular animated Ben 10 franchise with Ben 10: Alien Force, continuing the adventures of the ten-year-old title character into his mid and late teenage years. During the run of the series, McDuffie wrote episodes 1–3, 14, 25–28, 45 and 46 and/or story-edited all forty-six episodes. McDuffie also produced and story edited for the second sequel series Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, which premiered April 23. 2010. He wrote episodes 1, 10, 11, 16, 30, 39 together with J. M. DeMatteis and 52.

McDuffie wrote a number of direct-to-DVD animated films featuring DC Comics characters - including Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths and Justice League: Doom. He scripted the direct-to-DVD adaptation of All-Star Superman, which was released one day after his death. Justice League: Doom was released posthumously in 2012.
McDuffie’s work was also seen on Ben 10: Omniverse, having shared story by credit on the first two episodes, “The More Things Change, Parts 1 and 2.”

—————————————————

A pioneer who paved the way for increasing awareness and diversity within the mainstream comic book industry as well as animation, Dwayne’s memory and contribution will never be forgotten. Rest In Power, brother.

One of the greatest tv and comic book writers.  Dwayne McDuffie will never be forgotten.

Worm Charming

There is also the International Festival of Worm Charming which takes place in South Devon in South West England during the early May Bank Holiday. Although the event does not rival the World Worm Charming Championships, it is fundamentally different in that it has a much more vibrant and colourful passage as the event is aimed at primarily attracting youngsters to get close up and personal with the creatures. It has been running since 1984 and thus far has enjoyed world-wide patronage. The Festival is also accompanied by a Real Ale Beer Festival and other quintessentially English activities.

RIP the Rankin Half of Animation Legend Rankin/Bass Productions

We've just learned that Arthur Rankin Jr. passed away last Thursday, January 30th, at his home in Bermuda. He was 89. If the name "Rankin" doesn't ring any bells for you, add "Bass" on the end and it probably will. Formed in 1960 by Rankin and Jules Bass, Rankin/Bass Productions is the company responsible for the classic stop-motion holiday specials all you parents reading this had damn well better still be passing down to your kids. The most well-known of those is Rudolph the Red-Noised Reindeer, co-starring Hermey, the Christmas Elf who wants to be a dentist. On the non-stop motion front, R/B put out animated versions of The Hobbit and Return of the King, a clip from which we've inserted above, because it's Éowyn killing the Witch King and you know full well which site you're on. But Rankin/Bass' most beloved (non-Rudolph) film has to be The Last Unicorn, which the studio's two founders directed. We’ve included the original 1982 trailer under the jump. Watch it and pour one out for Mr Rankin.

OpenTable piloting a way to pay for meals by iPhone

by Josh Lowensohn
firehose

"Pay your bill without humans", because there's nothing iPhone owners hate more than humans

OpenTable made a name for itself by giving people a way to make restaurant reservations online, and now looks to make a similar splash for what happens when people are done eating. The company today announced a public pilot program that will let diners pay for their bill right on their phone using its app. So far that's limited to about a dozen establishments in San Francisco, where OpenTable is headquartered; it also requires diners to pay using the company's iPhone app, meaning it's not for everyone.

Pay your bill without humans

OpenTable began testing the service last July, shortly after it acquired mobile payments company JustChalo, though the feature was not available to the public. On the back-end, the payments are being handled using existing OpenTable reservation and guest management systems, the company says. It's also capturing data about dishes people are ordering, something that OpenTable could use to get more information about its users.

The move is a direct response to a burgeoning crop of startups and larger companies looking to simplify payments at restaurants, an area that's long been the turf of major credit card companies and specialty sales services. That list includes CoverDashTabbed OutPayPal, and Square. For OpenTable it also presents a chance to control the beginning and end of that meal. OpenTable says it's planning to bring the feature to Android, and potentially other platforms, though did not have an estimate for when that would be. The same goes for if and when the program will expand beyond San Francisco.

Helena Price, a San Francisco photographer (and friend of Laughing Squid) has recently become a meme in Brazil due to an instance of mistaken Twitter identity. Helena, who is @helena on Twitter, was flooded with tweets from fans of the Brazilian soap opera Em Familia who were concerned about the show’s character, also named Helena.

I'm literally getting thousands of @ replies for the wrong Helena right now. This is amazing. https://t.co/G5etISxcqm

— Helena Price (@helena) February 4, 2014

While Helena doesn’t speak Portugese, she was able to engage with the fans and quickly won their hearts. So much that the President of Brazil invited her to visit Brazil. And she also gained about 8,000 new Twitter followers.

But Lakemaid isn't the only company that's been harassed by the agency. Since 2012, the agency has sent official notices to 13 companies for the commercial use of drones."

Kevin Durant got an adorable puppy, joins the All-NBA Puppy First Team

by Seth Rosenthal

HI ZO!

Excellent news from Oklahoma City, where Kevin Durant announced today that he'd acquired an extremely cute and wrinkly bulldog puppy named Zo:

No idea why the dog's called baby Zo (Alonzo Mourning?), but I do know that adopting Zo immediately put Durant into the vaunted First Team of NBA Players Who Are Known To Own Cute Young Doggies By Me And My Colleague Rodger Sherman. Here's the whole lineup:

PG: Russell Westbrook (Sasha)

SG: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Adopted this "little weenie thing")

SF: Durant (Zo)

PF: Quincy Pondexter (Buckets)

C: Roy Hibbert (this li'l French bulldog)

(Not Kendrick Perkins, who sold his dog on Twitter.) (Chris Mullin would be on this team if he were still in the league, if only because of this photo.)

If you know of more and/or better NBA puppies, let us know. That's our first team for now.

Olympic Athletes May Use iPhones Without Restriction During Opening Ceremony Says IOC

by Jordan Golson
firehose

via Albener Pessoa

OlympicringsThe International Olympic Committee confirmed today that Olympic athletes are free to use any device they wish during the Opening Ceremonies, including iPhones. They are also not required to cover any logos on their devices.

Yesterday, it was reported that Samsung had asked athletes to cover the logos on devices made by competitors during the opening ceremonies as a condition for receiving a free Galaxy Note 3 smartphone in the gift bags given to all athletes.

In an email exchange with MacRumors today, an IOC spokesperson was asked about athletes being asked to cover non-Samsung logos on mobile devices. She responded saying the report was "not true":
No it is not true. Athletes can use any device they wish during the Opening Ceremony. The normal rules apply just as per previous Games.

The Samsung Note 3 that were distributed are a gift to the athletes, so they can capture and share their experiences at the Games, and the phones also contain important competition and logistical information for competing athletes.
Olympic athletes are controversially banned from mentioning any non-sponsor products during their time at the Olympics, including on social media and clothing. Rule 40 of the Olympic Charter, the rule covering the mention of non-sponsors, does have a specific exemption for sponsor logos on clothing or equipment that cover less than 10% of the surface area of the product in question.

It is possible that Samsung requested that logos be covered, but it is not an official IOC request and athletes will not be penalized for using or displaying non-Samsung phones.

Apple is looking to hire an Exercise Physiologist to oversee cardiovascular fitness and energy expenditure tests at its main headquarters campus. The new position was posted to the company's job board today (via 9to5Mac).
Design and run user studies related to cardiovascular fitness & energy expenditure, including calories burned, metabolic rate, aerobic fitness level measurement/tracking and other key physiological measurements.

Candidate will be knowledgeable about the physiological effects being measured and how to avoid potential inaccuracy and experimental error due DOE flaws and/or reference monitor (i.e. metabolic cart, etc.) usage issues.

The role will need to apply relevant knowledge to the design of products and their testing/validation through user studies.
iwatch-concept-nikeiWatch concept by Todd Hamilton
The requirements of this position suggest the employee will be working on Apple's rumored fitness-focused wearable. The company has been making a strong push into the medical and fitness field with recent hires like sleep expert Roy J.E.M Raymann from Philips Research and Michael O'Reilly, M.D., former Chief Medical Officer of pulse oximetry company Masimo.

This elite team of medical researchers is presumably designing Apple's iWatch along with fashion experts like Former Yves Saint Laurent CEO Paul Deneve, who was hired last year to work under Tim Cook on a "special project". Apple's fitness band may connect to the iPhone via Healthbook, a fitness app expected to be released alongside iOS 8.

Update: Apple has removed the job listing from its site.

In the 100th episode of Parks And Recreation, Ben and Leslie take a surprise trip to Paris where, after gawking at the incredibly romantic bridge from Inception, they commemorate their love through the tradition of putting a lock inscribed with their names on the fence overlooking the Pont des Arts. Fans have since made their own pilgrimages to seek out the lock and take their pictures with it, and it was all incredibly sweet and sentimental and a shared experience until some selfish jerkface cut the fence and stole the lock for themselves. The disappearance was first noted on Tumblr, by a Parks acolyte who located its spot using Reddit directions and previous fan photos, only to find it gone. “Whoever you are, super hardcore Parks fan, you kinda suck,” they wrote, speaking for us all.

Michael Schur has since retweeted the news, politely asking, “Please bring it back?” Meanwhile ...

Newswire: The Jesus Lizard/Einstürzende Neubauten combo The Unsemble debuts “Act 3”

by Jason Heller

What happens when Duane Denison of The Jesus Lizard and Tomahawk teams up with Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten? Toss in Silver Jews drummer Brian Kotzur and the answer is The Unsemble. The collaboration came together during the summer of 2012, with Denison on guitar, Hacke on bass, and all three members on keyboards and electronics. The mission: a vector for improv and composition that ropes in the rock contortionism of The Lizard as well as the itchy industrialization of Neubauten. What came out the other end is a self-titled album full of twistedly cinematic, propulsively arty, subliminally tuneful instrumentals—among them the double-jointed “Act 3,” which is being debuted here. The Unsemble will be released March 4 via Ipecac Records.

How Edward Snowden's Actions Have Impacted Defense Contractors

by timothy
An anonymous reader writes "A new study sheds light on the attitudes of a very exclusive group of IT and security managers — those employed by U.S. defense contractors — at a time when national cybersecurity is under scrutiny. Most indicated that the Edward Snowden incident has changed their companies' cybersecurity practices: their employees now receive more cybersecurity awareness training, some have re-evaluated employee data access privileges, others have implemented stricter hiring practices. While defense contractors seem to have better security practices in place and are more transparent than many companies in the private sector, they are finding the current cyber threat onslaught just as difficult to deal with."
