Making a note for later

Stephen Fry: Have you heard of the Curse of the Ninth? ...Symphonies.
Sandy Toksvig: Oh, where you're not supposed to write more than nine symphonies.
Stephen Fry: Where you finish the ninth and die while writing the tenth. It happened to Dvorak... Beethoven... Bruckner... Schubert...
Alan Davies: Unusual serial killer, that.

On Average, The Top Women-Led Films of 2013 Grossed Higher Than Male-Led Films

As we've previously discussed, of the 100 highest-grossing films of 2013, a whopping 15 featured female protagonists. This figure became popular knowledge through a report by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, which compares the percentage of women working behind the camera with those featured on screen. Unsurprisingly, the numbers correlate. Vanity Fair's Bruce Handy had some questions about those statistics. Given Hollywood's focus on getting as many butts in seats as possible, surely they wouldn't ignore the preferences of their audiences. Could it be that the lack of women on screen was actually reflective of a purchasing trend? If we treat blockbusters like Catching Fire as flukes, is there economic logic behind the comparative lack of female-led films? Spoiler: No.

How anyone can watch this video and not be convinced that dogs experience complex emotions is beyond me.

Too casual?

by Deadly Assassin

welcome to RPGnet

"WHY AREN'T MY PLAYERS TAKING THIS SRSBSNSS ENUF OMG I GOTTA POST TO A FORUM ABOUT IT"

What do you do - what can you do - when players' attitude toward the game you want to run is just too casual?

Not in a negative or deliberately disruptive way, but with players who just want a couple hours a week entertainment?

Not that gaming should be a chore, or hard work, but something more than as if it were a boardgame. Something that people invest something of themselves and their imagination, proportionately of course, into.

Otherwise why not just stick to boardgames?

YMMV of course :D

Delta on Woodstock going downhill?

Anyone else think the Delta has gotten a lot worse in the last couple months? I've lived nearby for a few years, and it was always our go-to, with good food and good cocktails. We went to brunch every week for a while, and always had a great experience.

Since November, though, every time I've gone there something has been wrong. It started out small, like when the cook sent out eggs over medium when we ordered over easy. The next time we went for dinner, and my girlfriend's fried chicken drumstick wasn't cooked all the way, and my old fashioned (off the house cocktail menu!) tasted like orange rind. Our waitress was a space cadet. We had never seen her before, and she took ages to get our drinks. When I asked her for a different drink, it almost sounded like she had expected me to send it back. After the food came, she disappeared, and we had to flag down another waitress to send back the chicken.

The GF went to brunch yesterday, and it was way worse than it had ever been before. She didn't recognize anyone working there, which is never a good sign. The waitress brought them make-your-own bloody marys that were half vodka. Upon being told, she just said, "Oh," and wandered off. They never got the coffee they ordered, and had to wait 40 minutes to order food in a half-full restaurant. Asking a manager (!) for hot sauce resulted in her sitting at the front staring out the window. After waiting a while with a card on the table, they finally went to the front and demanded to pay so they could leave, after 2 full hours inside.

I had heard that they were trying to compete more with the bars on the street. They added wings and some other stuff to the menu, and they replaced a table in the main dining room (not the bar area) with a photo booth, which creates a really nice strobe-like ambiance after dark.

Has anyone else noticed the Delta getting really bad lately?

So, what exactly does pi mean?

by Jason Kottke

via Ben Wolf
pi is about measuring the arrangements of pie slices

As Pi Day approaches, it time for a refresher course, courtesy of Steven Strogatz, on what pi actually means and how you can visualize calculating it. It's all about rearranging the pieces of a circle in a calculus-ish sort of way:

via GN

“When men display Amos’ brand of unpredictable, reckless ambition, we call them geniuses. Think of Jack White, or how very strange Radiohead’s Kid A sounded when it was first released but how enthusiastically that strangeness was greeted. Look outside of music, too, at how we adore the formal experimentation and/or self-indulgence of David Foster Wallace, or Charlie Kaufman, or Community creator Dan Harmon. Spike Jonze just got an Oscar for writing about his imaginary girlfriend! For a guy, doing strange things with form and pulling up bizarre visions from the core of his own personal torment is proof that he’s a capital-A Artist. But we scarcely mention it when we talk (or don’t talk) about Amos. I hate to pull a “because the patriarchy” here, but I can think of no other reason why so many people have worked, so hard, to avoid engaging with her work — or why they so often do it by way of trivializing Amos herself. When a woman claims the freedom to experiment that’s necessary to approach “genius” territory — the freedom to disregard or flaunt expectations, to alienate people, to fall flat on her face, to produce something that it might take more than one or two casual listens to penetrate — she’s grabbing at a traditionally male prerogative. When that happens, rather than admitting that a woman might intentionally release unusual work because she’s got some new ideas, most of us decide that she’s letting weird stuff leak out by accident, instead of applauding her sense of purpose.”

Watch this impersonator sing "Let it Go" in TWENTY-ONE Disney voices

We know, we know. There've been enough covers of Frozen's "Let it Go" by this point to play out from now until eternity . But voice-impersonator Brian Hull's may just be the most impressive of them all. Watch him sing Frozen's theme song in the voices of 21 Disney and Pixar characters. He totally nails it.
