Newswire: Future’s new album art is from Shutterstock, the artist made less than $80

by Sam Barsanti

Popular rapper Future released his latest album, Dirty Sprite 2, a few days ago, and the investigative reporters at The Fader noticed something interesting about the album’s artwork: It looks surprisingly similar to a stock photo from image site Shutterstock. We don’t know how the site noticed that—or who tipped them off to it—because recognizing something like this would either require a bizarre amount of luck or an intense familiarity with the library of stock photo sites.

Either way, Fader dug into this mystery and tracked down Sanja Tošić, the Solvenian artist who created the original image. She explained that she did sell the rights to the image to Future’s label, Epic Records, through Shutterstock—so this is all on the up-and-up—and she was paid somewhere between $0.33 and $80 for it. (She wouldn’t give the exact figure, as it’s all ...

FastMail Enables IMAP Push for iOS [Link]

by Gabe

FastMail has been on a roll lately. In the past 12 months they've added CalDAV and a terrific web app for calendaring, CardDAV support of contact management and syncing, IMAP Notes support and now comes the long awaited IMAP email push.

Push email will happen automatically for existing users and if you already have iOS configured with FastMail IMAP, you'll just start benefiting from the change without doing anything extra.

This month marks the 2-year anniversary for FastMail and I. It's been my sole provider for personal email in that time. All of my other accounts route to FastMail and they handle all server-side mail rules, spam filtering and syncing to every device. Their web app is fantastic and their support has always been excellent for me.

If you want to check out FastMail and support this site at the same time, here's a referral link that costs you nothing.

Wolfram Mail [Link]

by Gabe

what

The Wolfram API now handles email processing and this post describes some mail rules beyond anything you've probably ever seen.

Now I can subscribe to the mailing list as “receiver+5DHCTKhQ@wolframcloud.com,” and I will only receive messages about tables. But I can do better. Why not search messages for the price and create a log with the information I want? The function func below will run in my Wolfram Cloud account every time the mail receiver address receives an email

I wish I was like 10X smarter so I could use the Wolfram Language for more than dinking around.

Doomception: How modders got Doom to run inside of Doom

by Kyle Orland
firehose

yo dawg

Video of the GZDoom mod that plays Doom in an in-game cabinet.

Since the original Doom was released as open source code in the late '90s, hackers and modders have taken great joy in porting it to everything from Android Wear watches to printers. Now, those efforts have reached what may well be their zenith, with the release of a new mod that allows you to run a copy of Doom inside Doom itself.

OK, if we're being technically accurate, this is actually Doom running inside GZDoom, a heavily modified Doom source port that was first released in 2005 to bring a slew of modern gaming features to the 1993 original. The author also warns that the in-game versions of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D available in the mod are only "semi-complete." Still, the sheer amount of near-pointless effort and dedication needed to get GZDoom to run what is essentially a version of itself within itself is impressive (and kind of frightening).

Porting Doom to GZDoom was made possible through some elegant work on Action Code Script (ACS), a tool first introduced to the Doom engine in 1995's Hexen. ACS was designed to allow modders to create more interactive environments through simple bytecodes that did things like open doors, play sounds, or move items and characters around in response to player actions. The basic bytecode-based language in that game was later extended in the ZDoom source port to allow for high-level programming features like named scripts, functions, arrays, and entire libraries. Those additions made their way into the later GZDoom as well.

US wins its first International Mathematical Olympiad in 21 years

by Nathan Mattise

MOTHERFUCKING MATHLETES

Last week, a US competitive squad accomplished something this country hasn't seen since 1994—it conquered the math world.

A six-person team of young adult Americans bested teams from China, South Korea, and more to win the 2015 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Thailand this month.

According to the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the competition involves six problems taken in sets of three during 4.5 hour sessions (held across two days)—no calculators. Each team member attempts the problems, and team totals are based on the number of points each individual scores. The US earned 185 to take the gold while China earned runner-up honors with 181. It's the US' fifth victory overall. China has the most competition wins with 19 all-time, including winning four of the last five competitions heading into the 2015 edition.

Keybase

Once you've installed, joining the Keybase service is simple and interactive. If you already have a PGP key, it'll walk you through the upload and proof process.

And if you're new to all this, Keybase will help you generate a PGP key pair.

keybase login # if you have an account
keybase push # announce your public key
keybase prove twitter # generate a tweet
keybase prove github # generate a gist

That's it. It's really pretty simple. We're not reinventing any cryptography here - the goal is a simple way to look up and trust keys, based on known public identities.

The final commands to the left show some more examples.

Or...you can join and get your username through this website. Which will walk you through the process, too.

Octoprint is a Raspberry Pi printer server. via woodsy

I use a Makerbot Replicator 2X for 3D printing, but recently added a Lulzbot Taz5 for its bigger build space.
The Makerbot has its own workflow for slicing and I tend to use it as a stand-alone printer, printing from its SD card.

For the Lulzbot, I really wanted something better, so I decided to build a print server and have the Lulzbot be remotely connected over WiFi.
I’d already heard of Octoprint, and since I had some Raspberry Pi B+ boards handy, decided to use that combination.

Octoprint can also support a camera to remotely monitor the build progress – which I thought was fantastic.
I downloaded the OctoPi image for Raspberry Pi from Octoprint and got the Pi booted and setup.
Initially using an Ethernet connection, I added a USB WiFi dongle and tested the camera, etc;

iPod Touch performance preview: 500% better CPU, 900% faster graphics

'you're not quite getting iPhone 6 performance in an iPod-sized body'

Smartphones and tablets have stopped changing all that much from year to year, which makes it easy to take for granted just how far they've come in such a relatively short time. One year of updates doesn't do much to impress anymore, but take three or four years of updates all at once and you'll have something to be impressed by.

Such is the case with the sixth-generation iPod Touch, which brings three years' and four generations' worth of processor improvements all at the same time. Jumping from an Apple A5 to an A8 results in an almost comically large performance improvement, though as we'll see, you're not quite getting iPhone 6 performance in an iPod-sized body.

The CPU

The iPod's A8 is running at around 1.1GHz, roughly 27 percent slower than the 1.4GHz A8 in the iPhone 6. When those phones were announced, Apple said the A8 was about 25 percent faster than the Apple A7 in the iPhone 5S—as you can probably guess, slowing the thing down by 300MHz makes it perform a whole lot like an A7.

Air Force offers big bonuses to stop exodus of drone pilots

by Sean Gallagher
firehose

'$15,000 bonus per year starting in 2016'

In an effort to stem the loss of its overworked and overstressed drone pilots, the US Air Force has introduced a new program to try to convince existing pilots to stay with the service as well as rapidly bring aboard new ones. The plan includes pushing a fresh crop of "Remotely Piloted Aircraft" (RPA) pilots in drone squadrons as early as August and offering existing pilots a $15,000 bonus per year starting in 2016.

As Ars reported in June, the Air Force is facing a potential mass exodus of drone pilots. The New York Times reported that a "significant number" of the current approximately 1,200 RPA-trained pilots who fly the Air Force's MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper drones were approaching the end of their current service obligations and had stated their intentions to leave the Air Force. Meanwhile, the training program for new drone pilots has only been producing about half the number needed to meet the Air Force's manning levels—putting more stress on pilots and causing the Air Force to move instructors back to daily flying to fill the gaps.

The demands of flying combat missions a world away on long shifts without being actually deployed overseas (most Air Force drone pilots work from Creech Air Force Base outside Las Vegas, Nevada), and of having to switch gears to daily home life after such missions, has been a drain on the morale of drone pilots. As more pilots have left, more pressure has been placed on the remaining pilots. In a press release issued by the Air Force this week, Secretary of the Air force Deborah Lee James said, "We now face a situation where if we don't direct additional resources appropriately, it creates unacceptable risk [to drone operations]. We are working hard to put solutions in place to bring needed relief to our Airmen and ensure our actions show their value to our mission."

Homejoy, an app-based home cleaning service startup that relies entirely on contract labor, suddenly announced it would be shutting down at the end of the month.

The startup came under fire in March 2015 after it faced two lawsuits from former workers filed locally in San Francisco. In both lawsuits, the plaintiffs alleged that they should have been treated as employees rather than independent contractors.

In a Friday blog post, co-founder Adora Cheung alluded to, but did not directly address. these issues. She wrote:

Philip K Dick’s only novel for children to be reissued in UK #SciFiSunday

Exciting news for Philip K Dick fans! From The Guardian:

A boy and his family leave Earth on a “gentle” quest to save his cat, Horace – not the kind of manuscript you might expect from the “Shakespeare of science fiction”, Philip K Dick. But five decades after Dick’s publisher turned down the only children’s novel the author ever wrote, and more than 20 years since it fell out of print in the UK, Nick and the Glimmung will be brought to a new audience later this year.

Dick sent the manuscript to Doubleday in the late 1960s alongside his acclaimed time-slippage story for adults, Ubik, but his editor decided to decline. Nick and the Glimmung found a publisher in 1988, six years after its author’s death, but slid out of print around 1990. A limited run was produced by the US publisher Subterranean Press in 2008, but has since sold out. Gollancz are now due to release a UK edition in September 2015.

Better drinking through science

by Nathan Mattise

Tales makes Ars Technica

NEW ORLEANS—A world-renowned cocktail conference may sound like a giant party (well, because it is to some extent), but increasingly the annual Tales of the Cocktail gathering of the alcohol industry doubles as the nerdiest pilgrimage for those wanting to know more about the drinks they love.

Where else would Dr. Max Wiznitzer, an accomplished child neurologist and former National Institute of Health fellow, be joined onstage by his daughter Pamela, an accomplished creative director and bartender at a Manhattan cocktail spot called Seamstress? The duo closed four days of informational seminars by walking a room full of industry professionals through how the brain responds to and processes cocktails.

Perhaps the average barkeep doesn't need to know that the body contains more than 350 receptor proteins solely to process smell (detecting more than half a million odorants, any of which may bind to these proteins for all of a millisecond). But that knowledge coincided nicely with Pamela Wiznitzer's recommendations to carefully consider the aroma of your garnishes. When possible, use scents that intentionally clash with a drink's ultimate flavor (thus creating an alluring complexity).

Even the Padres organization was pretty shocked that this #RainDelay happened.

Less than 1% of Women Regret Their Decision to Have an Abortion

by Lisa Wade, PhD
firehose

via ThePrettiestOne

A new article reports the findings from a longitudinal study that followed 667 women who had early- and later-term abortions for three years after their procedure. Dr. Corinne Rocca and her colleagues asked women if they felt that the abortion was the “right decision” at one week and approximately every six months thereafter.

This is your image of the week:

Percent of women reporting that abortion was the right decision over three years:

2

Over 99% of the women said that the abortion was the right decision at every time point. The line that looks like the upper barrier of the graph? That’s the data.

Overall, measures of negative emotions were relatively low — an average score of under 4 on a 16-point scale at one week and declining to about 2 at three years — and were higher for women who had a more difficult time deciding whether to get an abortion or who subsequently had planned pregnancies. Whether the abortion occurred in the first trimester or near the legal limit did not correlate with emotional response.

In contrast, women reported twice as many positive emotions at one week. Over time, positive feelings about the abortion declined along with negative ones, suggesting that the experience became less emotionally charged overall with distance from the procedure.
