Kellar was born blind, but over the course of a week, his owners taught him to retrieve a ball using six different commands — “hot,” “cold,” “warmer,” “passed it,” “left,” and “right.” Here’s the English Springer Spaniel in action…

Scooby Doo has great life lessons to teach:
If something evil is happening, it’s probably an old white man trying to make money.

Environment Minister Andrew Powell wants Australians to boycott the American company, saying they’ve damaged the reputation of the reef and jeopardised jobs and tourism dollars.
‘‘Another company has signed up to the campaign of lies and deceit that’s been propagated by WWF,’’ Mr Powell said.
‘‘The only people taking a scoop out of the reef is Ben and Jerry’s and Unilever.
‘‘If you understand the facts, you’d want to be boycotting Ben and Jerry’s.’’

"It's a little too coincidental that this is happening so soon after Google announced Portland as a potential fiber market, and it's disgusting how quickly CenturyLink reacted after that to string fiber across this whole neighborhood"
isn't entirely true, as CL was wiring those condo sites a year before Google Fiber announced anything
but _only_ those condos; the announcement NOW that they're extending it through that specific, rapidly developing part of the SE, and especially eating the ONT costs, is sort of a "fuck it, we're probably going to lose anyway" move
Six reps from CenturyLink (retail, network ops, installations, etc) were at the frozen yoghurt place on Hawthorne today to talk it up. It's real. As /u/oh_its_real said here, this is a first-neighborhood trial of fiber to the home, up to 1 Gb (up/down) service for this 500 home area between Hawthorne & Division, 39th down to (somewhere between 30th & 33rd).
First 12 month pricing (no-bundle prices): * $115 for 1 Gb down/1 Gb up * $80 for 100 Mb down/50 Mb up * $46 for 40 Mb down/5 Mb up
I signed up for the 40/5 plan (I'm currently getting an average of 6/0.5 for my $60 with their copper service) - after 12 months goes to something like $73. I've heard many stories of how Centurylink customer retention has extended their initial pricing for another 6 months for everyone who doesn't like paying $60 for 6 Mb service, but who knows if they'll be more arrogant once they're getting us on for 21st-century speeds.
They actually brought out demo models of the ONT, UPS and 'modem'/router - which immediately answered my question of FTTN vs FTTH. It was odd to talk with competent and personable folks about telecom operations and what they're doing. One dude was thrilled I'd been seeing the "1 Gig" banners that have gone up on all the new condos in SE, and he was the same guy who told me they're eating the cost of the ONT and "hoping we'll be customers with CenturyLink for a long time to pay it off".
It's a little too coincidental that this is happening so soon after Google announced Portland as a potential fiber market, and it's disgusting how quickly CenturyLink reacted after that to string fiber across this whole neighborhood. I'm happy to pay less (monthly, after the fees) to get 6x the speeds I'm currently getting, and I'll be just as happy to ditch them the minute Google comes knocking on my door. However, for a lot of your sakes, I'm hoping this trial goes well and encourages CL to start laying fiber all over town. Wot, does this smell of free market competition? In telecom? Well, let's enjoy the modernization while it lasts.

The Fra Mauro map, a medieval European map, was made around 1450 by the Venetian monk Fra Mauro. It is a circular world map drawn on parchment and set in a wooden frame, about two meters in diameter.
The Fra Mauro map is unusual, but typical of Fra Mauro’s portolan charts, in that its orientation is with the south at the top, one of the usual conventions of Muslim maps, in contrast with the Ptolemy map which has the north at the top.

"We return, in the end, to the Civilian JTF. Just as Boko Haram is merely a new chapter in the history of religious violence in Nigeria, vigilantism has filled the vacuum left by the ramshackle- security services. These vigilante groups have regularly been co-opted by wily politicians into personal goon squads, roughing up opponents and intimidating voters. With Boko Haram on the back foot, at least in Maiduguri, the question lingers: what will become of the Civilian JTF, who've grown fond of their machetes and the power they confer? Already there are tensions emerging between the town's various chapters, with five Civilian JTF members killed in a clash during my visit. Even more worryingly, I was told the story of Mala Othman, one of Shettima's political rivals, whose house was attacked by a group initially thought to be Boko Haram, but later revealed as Civilian JTF."
In northern Nigeria, radical Islamic terrorist group Boko Haram is facing a vigilante backlash from armed teenagers with nothing to lose.
