Music Review: Owen Pallett aims for the thirtysomething gut

by Todd VanDerWerff

Owen Pallett has always walked an unusual path between the classical and the modern. His songs use strings and orchestral instrumentation to suggest pop symphonies, but Pallett loops and twists those sounds into endless repetition, suggesting the world of electronic music. Melodies emerge fitfully, sometimes on the fifth or sixth listen, and they might flit away just as quickly, only to re-engage the brain years later, as half-remembered snippets of something long gone. When Pallett’s music works, as it does more often than not, it’s on the level of the subconscious. He crafts his songs to very nearly trick the listener into embedding them deep into the memory. These songs are artifacts to be excavated later.

That’s never been truer than on In Conflict, a strong contender for his best album yet. Here, those repetitive orchestral riffs become not just a part of the soundbed but the ...

This ‘personal space’ dress could solve all your public transportation woes.

CREDIT THE INVENTOR: SHE IS AN ARTIST NAMED KATHLEEN MCDERMOTT WHO IS FINISHING HER MFA IN HONG KONG

Also she is developing this technology literally to help women assert their space in public AND MAKE A STATEMENT about how women are treated in patriarchal societies! She is developing other clothes too! You can support her project here: http://www.kthartic.com/index.php?/class/about-urban-armor/

More info:

The dress is the second in a series of projects called Urban Armor, which aim to help women own their space in public arenas that often attempt to deny this right. As McDermott explains in the project statement: “The series arose partly out of my concern over the persistence of ideologies asserted at women in public space through advertising, architecture and socially normative behavior. I began to look for ways women could take more ownership over their personal space in public.”

Basically this woman is a badass feminist artist. Please support her work and spread the word

OPML subscriptions

by Yordan Yordanov

via Jfiorato
yet another feature not available on ThOR

OPML import and export is an integral part of any RSS reader software. It allows users to switch between readers in a breeze and don't feel locked in at any moment.

What happens when you import an OPML file inside your reader? You get a snapshot of the feeds in this file and that's it. But there's more to OPML than just one-time transferring of feeds. It can actually be used to link subscriptions between different services! That's why today we are launching our new feature called OPML subscriptions.
The idea is not new, credits goes to Dave Winer, who implemented this 12 years ago in a product called Radio Userland and later in subsequent products river2 and river3.
Basically you subscribe to an OPML URL just like you subscribe to regular RSS feeds. You have to assign a specific folder for the new subscriptions and choose the synchronisation type. It can be "Subscribe only", which means that only new feeds will be added and removed feeds will not be touched, and "Full synchronisation", which will automatically unsubscribe any feeds no longer available in the remote OPML.

The OPML file will be periodically checked for updates and changes will be reflected in your account. When there are new (or removed if you choose Full synchronisation) feeds, you will see a hint in your notifications about this:

OPML subscriptions are available for all users. The only difference for Basic accounts is that files will be checked for updates once every 24 hours, while for Plus and Professional users, files will be checked every hour. There is of course an option for manual update.
You can find the new feature by going to Preferences -> OPML subscriptions.

Credits goes to our Power User Marjolein Hoekstra for her extensive testing and great ideas about this feature. She has prepared a write-up of her own, which you can find at RSS Reader InoReader to Support Dynamic OPML Subscriptions

As always this update contains a number of other changes too:

  • New dashboard gadget called New articles. With it, you can list recent articles from a chosen feed, folder, or all of your subscriptions. With the possibility to add many such gadgets, you can put your favorite feeds at the top of your dashboard.
  • Dashboard gadgets can now be collapsed.
  • Dashboard gadgets can now be deleted when dragging them to the top of the screen (a red area with a bin icon will appear). The X button is removed to help unclutter the screen.
  • Notifications also have sound now.

What Happens When You Introduce Airport-Style Security to the World's Busiest Subway

by Heather Timmons

"The heightened security comes after attackers threw explosives into a crowd"

so, uh, these densely packed immobile crowds look much more secure

Beijing’s beleaguered commuters already have to deal overcrowded public transportation, massive traffic jams and air so dirty that biking to work is often not an option. This week brought a new woe: airport-style security at some subway stations, which created massive lines and long waits to get on trains in the first place.

Beijing’s subway network is the busiest in the world, and commuters take about 10 million rides a day between approximately 200 subway stations. Even a small malfunction, like a temporary signal failure, can lead to huge crowds on subway platforms.

“The usual subway security check no longer involves just ‘putting your bags through’ [an X-ray scanner] as commuters now have to be checked as though they are going through airport customs,” The Nanfang Insider reported. Nine stations have instituted the new checks, which according to Beijing police “should not take more than 30 minutes.” (link in Chinese)

The heightened security comes after attackers threw explosives into a crowded marketplace in Urumqi, western China, killing more than 30 people earlier this month. In response, China has announced a stepped-up fight against homegrown terrorism.

Beijing has also introduced a new helicopter fleet that is taking real-time surveillance photos at transport hubs, shopping centers and tourist hubs. And police patrolling subways are newly equipped with guns.

The added security checks at Beijing’s subway stations didn’t make some citizens feel much safer. As social media users traded photos of the Beijing commuter queues, many questioned the purpose of it all. Surely “throwing a bomb into this crowd would be more lethal” than setting one off on the subway, noted one skeptic (link in Chinese).

Unsure what’s going on here, but a 720p60 video frame should never look like this.

we work with a company that covers motor racing and they still work with a lot of interlaced systems, which in some codecs doesn't mix well with NLE products not accustomed to supporting interlaced frames in progressive video and leads to visible interlacing like this. neither uncommon nor surprising, and it happens in other non-marquee sports, especially in places that aren't Japan or western Europe where interlaced video never really went away

Edgar Wright's Swiftly Deleted Comment On His Ant-Man Departure

by Rob Bricken
firehose

'the picture is of silent film comedian Buster Keaton, holding Wright's iconic Cornetto ice cream cone. The relevance is almost certainly this: Keaton was head of his own independent production company in the 1920s, and made some of the most acclaimed comedy movies of all time as writer, director and actor. He famously signed away his independence to MGM in 1928, which took control of his scripts, wouldn't let him do his own stunts, and more. The deal not only affected the quality of Keaton's films, but his happiness as well — he famously called his decision the worst mistake he'd ever made.'

Edgar Wright's Swiftly Deleted Comment On His Ant-Man Departure

Ant-Man director Edgar Wright broke his silence on his split with Marvel — although very briefly. He posted this picture with the message "selfie", and almost immediately deleted it. Of course, the internet is forever, and the pic was caught — and it's a subtle but definite rebuke to Marvel.

Games News! 26/05/14

by quintinsmithster@gmail.com (Quintin)

'Say Bye to the Villains is an excellently-named Japanese card game that AEG are bringing to the West this year, and it sounds incredible. Board Game Geek entry here, mini-designer diary here. The highlight of which is this part:

"I’ve produced several games with a Japanese theme (such as Mai-Star), but there was one specific theme that I always dreamt of doing: Samurai drama. A game where virtuous samurai and their accomplices are drawn into the events, pull out the truth, and at the end rush into the villain’s abodes and defeat them."

Oh wow, yeah, that sounds great, a-- wait I beg your pardon? A game where you stockpile information with the end goal of heroically running into a man's house to murder him? I'm literally laughing as I type this.

The design of the game proper sounds fantastic, too. Similar to Hanabi, Say Bye to the Villains offers everyone a private hand of cards, together with very strict rules on what information they can share. Here at SU&SD we loved the idea of Hanabi, but never seemed to squeak as much pleasure from it as everybody else. If this can offer us a game that's a little more thematic, and a little more structured, I'd be very excited indeed.'

Quinns: Hello! Or as they say in Germany, das hallo! It's a special Mostly-German edition of the games news today, because a lot of our news is from Germany and I am very creative.

Uwe Rosenberg, designer behind such pastoral heavyweights as Agricola, Le Havre and Caverna has revealed his next project! What bold new setting are we getting this time, Uwe? What magical new mechanics have you birthed from the recesses of your labyrinthine mind?

"In the worker placement game Arler Erde, set in the German region of East Frisia, players develop an estate and expand their territory by cutting peat and building dikes."

Ah. More of the same, then. That's a shame! In the very same week, similarly prolific German mentat Stefan Feld has announced that his next game is about scientists that hang out with octopuses and crystals at the bottom of the ocean. Is "Team Feld" a thing? We should make it a thing. SU&SD hereby announces it is TEAM FELD!
