Yes, 2 kids won the Scripps National Spelling Bee

by Seth Rosenthal

Ansun and Sriram are the first co-champions since 1962!

Wait, two kids won the Spelling Bee?

Indeed. Thirteen-year-old Ansun Sujoe and 14-year-old Sriram Hathwar were co-champions.

How?

Once the Bee gets down to two or three contestants, the contest switches to a list of 25 final words. If the contestants make it through all 25 words (i.e. no round ends with exactly one person having answered correctly), whoever remains is a co-champion. If Ansun had missed "feuilleton" at the end, Sriram would have had the opportunity to win on his own.

20140529213610_medium

But Ansun wasn't gonna miss that. Ansun's a beast.

Do ties happen often?

Nope, the Bee hadn't had co-champions since 1962. Oddly, there were co-champions before that in 1950 and 1957. I'm not sure if that is because the rules were different, because the words easier, or just a coincidence.

They need to fix this. Ties are unacceptable.

Well, spelling contestants are, as Sriram put it, battling the dictionary, not each other. So it's really no less of a trium--

THEY NEED TO FIX THIS. IT'S SOCIALIST.

Okay, what do you recommend?

TRIAL BY COMBAT. BATTLE TO THE DEEEEEEEEATH.

Uh, okay. How's this?

Donald Sterling reportedly deemed 'mentally incapacitated,' freeing wife to sell team

by Satchel Price

Donald Sterling was reportedly declared "mentally incapacitated" by experts, which allows Shelly Sterling to sell the Clippers without his approval, per the terms of their trust.

Shelly Sterling received permission to sell the Los Angeles Clippers as the franchise's sole trustee after experts declared Donald Sterling "mentally incapacitated," reports Ramona Shelburne of ESPN Los Angeles. Per the terms of the trust, that freed Shelly Sterling to act on Donald's behalf without needing his approval.

The news comes after reports of a $2 billion sale of the franchise to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer earlier on Thursday.

When news of Ballmer's purchase initially hit the public, there was some confusion as to whether Donald Sterling would accept the deal or decide to challenge the NBA. However, this development appears to take that decision out of his hands, not long after Sterling seemingly went back and forth on giving Shelly permission to sell the team.

Sterling, 80, has reportedly been dealing with prostate cancer, which could be a factor in how his mental health was evaluated by experts. Recently, he reportedly gave his estranged wife permission to sell the franchise, but that came with mixed messages as he also hired a lawyer, changed his mind and informed the league he wouldn't pay his $2.5 million fine.

By transferring the status of sole trustee from Donald Sterling to Shelly Sterling, the process of selling the team to Ballmer likely becomes expedited. Many of the complications with the sale loomed around a possible lawsuit from Donald Sterling, but if he's surrounded by medical questions and hands over trusteeship to Shelly, she can complete the deal without his permission. However, it is possible that Donald Sterling's lawyers attempt to fight the diagnosis.

There could still be a response by Donald Sterling & his lawyers, but his first action would be to contest Shelly's move, not NBA now.

— Ramona Shelburne (@ramonashelburne) May 30, 2014

This may explains how the reported Ballmer deal came together so quickly when the Clippers' situation seemed to be in turmoil. With Shelly given full permission to sell the Sterling family's majority stake in the franchise, the NBA will likely move as quickly as possible to install the new ownership. The league had a June 3 meeting scheduled to vote on terminating Donald Sterling's ownership; the status of that meeting remains unclear.

Hi Cameron. Do you have any plans to update your 'Rail Transit of Portland' map with the new transit/pedestrian bridge and new MAX line down to Milwaukie? Are you waiting till the line opens? I love the map and would like to buy a print once it's updated. Thanks!

That version of the map is basically done, as can be seen here on Flickr — the line down to Milwaukie is shown as “under construction”. I still need to revise the colours used for the streetcar lines to match the official ones as this map was made before they had finalised them.

Then, I will have to wait until the line is opened to see what the final route configuration of the Orange Line will be. I’ve chosen to show the line as a logical extension of the Yellow Line (as I personally believe that’s what it should be!), but it seems that TriMet wants it to be its own, separate route designation. I’ve heard differing reports of where the line will terminate/turn around/change into a Yellow Line train, so I’m just going to have to wait, I guess…

Smith has recently turned her attention to Little & Large, a pet boutique she’s opened just southwest of London. However, it’s her photos that are garnering all the praise as her beautiful portrayals of various young canines are increasingly capturing people’s attention two years after her book was published.

While the images presented online can’t be actual size, all of the pictures in her book show the puppies at the exact same size as they are in real life.

Dish Network Corp. said subscribers will soon be able to pay their bills using bitcoin, the online virtual currency that’s drawn scrutiny from regulators. The satellite-TV company, which has more than 14 million customers, will begin accepting bitcoin payments in the third quarter, according to a statement today. Dish says it’s the largest company to accept bitcoin as well as the first pay-tv provider to do so.

We thought it could be interesting to someone out there to share how the orders placed at Adafruit using bitcoin was going. We launched mid November 2013 and the average amount of total bitcoin orders per day was about $1,572.14 USD, with an average order size of $231.20 USD. Peak orders was around 100/day using bitcoin, in the last 30 days it’s about 5 to 10 orders / day using bitcoin and average amount per order being $170.86 USD. Other online stores in the maker world started taking bitcoin too, if you have some coins to spend, head on over to EMSL (Evil Mad Scientist). The coolest part of this experiment for us was an Adafruit community member built a bitcoin miner and then used the coins they mined to buy Adafruit electronics with the mined coins. Man who drugged and raped his wife for years because she was “snippy” gets no prison time:

talix18:

Over the course of three years, an Indiana man named David Wise regularly drugged his wife, raped her, and filmed the assaults on his phone. When confronted, he admitted to her in writing that “I was taking advantage of you in your sleep and you kept coming to me and telling me it was NOT ok.” He was convicted of six felony charges, but won’t spent a single day in prison because the county judge suspended 12 years of his 20-year sentence and decided that eight years of home confinement was plenty.

This is why we’re angry.

Just last month June 29th 2013, Gabriella Calhoun would be beaten unconscious by police. Gabby is an honor student at Wiley College. She finished high school a year early and went to college a year before the rest of her cohort. After a party on a nice summer night Gabriella decided to head to Denny’s with Friends to get something to eat. While sitting at her table inside Denny’s a fight broke out outside between two girls who were unrelated to her party.

The police were called, Gabriella’s table had just ordered their drinks. The officers arrived and broke up the fight. They ended up macing one of the girls fighting. They then allowed the girls to go inside Denny’s to “Clean themselves up” meanwhile the officers entered Denny’s and asked a person (Black Male) from Gabriella’s party did they have anything to do with it. He told the officers "No we were not involved". The officers went back outside, then the two girls who were allowed to “Clean themselves up” saw each other inside Denny’s and began fighting again…

Officers rushed back inside Denny’s to break up the fight again, after dismantling the girls fighting they then approached the same person from Gabriella’s Party (Black Male) and commanded him to come outside.
Gabriella shocked and outraged at what was going on follows her friend outside and grabs his side…

From behind an officer grabs Gabriella by her neck and arm. Gabriella shocked and scared reacted by trying to pull away because she could not see who was grabbing her. According to witnesses after attempting to pull away Gabriella was then struck by the officer with a nightstick and knocked unconscious.

After regaining consciousness Gabby stated: “I awoke spitting my teeth out on the ground…. When I came to, the officer begin to choke me again. When I was finally able to talk, I asked the officer to please let me go because I have asthma, but she [the officer], said, ‘I don’t care if you have asthma. You were hitting my officer.’”

“Afterward, the officer kept saying over and over again, ‘how was your party’ as she held my face to the ground.”

The officer (female cop) then lifted the petite honor student off of the ground, at which her breasts were exposed because the tube top shirt she was wearing had rolled down…

Gabriella was then sent to the precinct where she was booked on one charge of felony aggravated battery and two misdemeanors for resisting arrest.”

Just wanted to spread awareness on the situation the incident happened in Bloomington, IL it is said that Jesse Jackson is now in the process of seeking justice for the case. One of the main contributors to this information was writer Yolanda Spivey.

ISEE-3 spacecraft makes first Earth contact in 16 years

by Megan Geuss
ISEE-3 Reboot Project

On Thursday a group of space enthusiasts announced that they had established two-way communication with the International Sun-Earth Explorer 3 (ISEE-3), a satellite launched in 1978 and used throughout the 80’s to study solar winds.

After the satellite had completed its mission, NASA used the Moon’s gravity to fling it into an orbit leading Earth around the Sun. Contact with the ISEE-3 was officially suspended in 1998. Many years later, the ISEE-3 is about to catch up with Earth from behind, an occasion which led the space enthusiasts at the ISEE-3 Reboot Project to try to make contact with the dormant spacecraft.

With NASA funds perpetually low, using resources to make contact through the space agency was an impossibility. But last week, NASA handed the keys to the satellite over to the ISEE-3 Reboot Project, which is backed by a company called Skycorp, Inc.

The Six Year Anniversary of the Re-Naming of Yiying Lu’s ‘Lifting A Dreamer’ To Twitter ‘Fail Whale’

by Lori Dorn

Lifting A Dreamer aka Fail Whale

Today marks the six year anniversary naming of the once-ubiquitous “Fail Whale“, a colorful illustration of a “white beluga whale held up by a flock of birds” that became synonymous with a Twitter downtime. The illustration, originally named “Lifting A Dreamer“, was created by graphic designer Yiying Lu in 2009 until it was re-named in that same year by Twitter user Nick Quaranto. Since that time, the illustration has taken many different forms, from tattoos to sculptures to cakes to artwork from different artists. Whether the message is that of a dreamer or that of a failure, the image has resonated deeply into the world’s psyche.

The fan base creative expression of the “Lifting a Dreamer” (“Fail Whale”) has grown tremendously over the past 6 years, from tattoo to 3D sculptures, Lego to beer labels, cakes to street art…the “Fail Whale” gradually became a culture icon. There are hundreds, probably thousands, of funny ‘modified’ Lifting a Dreamer on the internet.

Meet Steve Ballmer, who is offering $2 billion to buy the Clippers

by Mark Sandritter
firehose

'WSJ: So you wouldn't move the Clippers to Seattle?
Ballmer: If I get interested in the Clippers, it would be for Los Angeles. I don't work anymore, so I have more geographic flexibility than I did a year, year-and-a half ago. Moving them anywhere else would be value destructive.'

MOVE
THE
CLIPPERS
BALLMER

MOVE THE CLIPPERS

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THE CLIPPERS

DEVELOPERS DEVEOLPERS EDVELOPERS DEVLEOPERS

It only took $2 billion, but Steve Ballmer might finally become an NBA owner. We take a closer look at the former Microsoft CEO and his love of basketball.

In the days and weeks after Clippers owner Donald Sterling was banned from the NBA for life, seemingly every wealthy person in the America stated their interest in buying the team. From Floyd Mayweather to Oprah Winfrey to Magic Johnson, dozens tossed their names into the ring. It appears former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will win the Clippers sweepstakes after his reported $2 billion offer topped the rest, though the sale has yet to be finalized and still must be approved by Sterling and then vetted by NBA owners.

Who exactly is Steve Ballmer? The former Microsoft CEO is a huge basketball fan, and this isn't his first attempt to become an NBA owner.

Background

The 58-year-old Ballmer was born and raised in Detroit. He excelled in school from an early age, taking college graduate math courses while he was in high school and scoring a perfect 800 on the math portion of the SAT, according to the New York Times. After graduating, he headed off to Harvard for college where he would eventually graduate with honors.

This isn't the case of a billionaire who happens to buy a basketball team. Instead, Ballmer is a basketball fan who happens to be a billionaire. He once described himself as a basketball "gym rat" according to Pablo Torre of ESPN. According to Torre, Ballmer tracked assists and rebounds of Harvard games for $12 a game.

While the $2 billion big is an astronomical number, especially considering the next-highest purchase price of an NBA team was Milwaukee at $550 million, it not an astronomical number for Ballmer. He had an estimated net worth of $18 billion in September of 2013, according to Forbes. That made him the 21st-richest person in the world.

Microsoft

Ballmer joined Microsoft as the company's first business manager in 1980. He went on to spend nearly 35 years with the company, rising to CEO in 2000 and retiring from in 2014. Ballmer made his fortune during his stint with the software giant while also developing a reputation as one of the most enthusiastic people you'll meet. His exorbitant and enthusiastic speeches are ... well, you can see for yourself. His enthusiasm and energy would put some NBA mascots and cheer squads to shame.

With his long career at Microsoft, Ballmer established roots in the Seattle area, leading him to have interest in the various Seattle NBA projects. Since his retirement earlier this year, he's no longer locked into Seattle and told the Wall Street journal he wouldn't move the Clippers:

WSJ: So you wouldn't move the Clippers to Seattle?

Ballmer: If I get interested in the Clippers, it would be for Los Angeles. I don't work anymore, so I have more geographic flexibility than I did a year, year-and-a half ago. Moving them anywhere else would be value destructive.

Interest in the NBA

Ballmer's bid on the Clippers is just his latest attempt to buy into the NBA. He joined an investment group in 2008 that tried to fund half of the renovation costs of KeyArena in an effort to keep the Sonics in Seattle before they moved to Oklahoma City. Ballmer was also the other big part of the Seattle investment group, led by Chris Hansen, that proposed a new downtown arena and attempted to purchase the Sacramento Kings.

While his two previous attempts to purchase an NBA team came up short, they were largely due to the NBA situation in Seattle instead of his credentials as an owner. Clay Bennett and his ownership group were set on moving the team, no matter what last-ditch effort Ballmer and the local investors could scrum up. His attempt with Hansen to buy the Kings came close, but the other owners eventually voted to sell to a local investment group and keep the team in Sacramento.

With his interest in basketball and massive wealth, he makes for an ideal ownership candidate. If his third attempt proves to be the charm, Ballmer would become the NBA's wealthiest owner, topping Portland's Paul Allen.

Update-enabling Windows XP registry hack is great news for XP die-hards

by Peter Bright

Although Microsoft has officially stopped providing free security patches for Windows XP, millions of people haven't got the message and are still running the ancient operating system. As a result of this, there's widespread interest in figuring out ways to get patches, and last week, a registry change started circulating that appeared to reinstate Windows XP's security updates.

In spite of the end of public support, Microsoft is still developing security updates for Windows XP. There are two main demographics that benefit from these fixes. The first are the governments and large corporations that are paying Microsoft large sums of money to gain continued access to hotfixes.

The second are users of Microsoft's various embedded versions of Windows XP. These versions of the operating system are designed for things like ATMs and industrial machinery. The core parts of these operating systems are identical to those from regular, non-embedded Windows XP, and as such, patches that apply to these operating systems will tend to also work on regular Windows.
