It’s Naomi Campbell vs. Lady Gaga for American Horror Story: Hotel - Basically the best thing ever.

by Jessica Lachenal

naomi campbell empire

Okay. Okay, wait. So now we’ve got Naomi futzin’ Campbell as a fashion editor with some “deadly critiques” and Lady Gaga as her nemesis and the villain? How exciting is that?

As AV Club reports, she’ll be joined by series veteran Angela Bassett, who Ryan Murphy has promised will have scenes with Campbell. The moment these three amazing women are in the same scene together, you’d better be ready with a fire extinguisher because your TV is going to burst into flames. And that’s not because they’re burning witches at the stake again.

At least we don’t think so. Though really, with American Horror Story, who knows what’s going to happen? Except for drama. We always know drama is going to happen.

A lot of the old American Horror Story veterans aren’t coming along for this season, but with Naomi Campbell, Angela Bassett, and Lady Gaga leading the way, it’s still going to be one to remember for sure. What do you think, gang? Are y’all going to be tuning in?

Louisiana water system: Abounds in the Brain-eating amoeba

firehose

my people, my people

A potentially deadly brain-eating amoeba has been discovered in the St. Bernard Parish Water System that serves more than 44,000 people, and the system is being purified, state health officials said.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals notified the water system and parish officials Wednesday evening.

Olivia Hwang, a DHH spokeswoman, said the health department asked the water system to conduct a 60-day chlorine burn to ensure that any remaining amoeba in the system are eliminated. The chlorine burn will help reduce biofilm, or organic buildup, throughout the water system and will kill the amoeba.

Parish President Dave Peralta told the state the burn “may not be necessary, but out of an abundance of caution we’re going to do it.” He said the burn started at 6 a.m. Thursday.

No cases of infection have been reported.

It’s the second time the Naegleria fowleri amoeba has been found in the water system in the last two years.

Peralta said the problem was found at a leaking sampling station, in a coupling that comes off a main water line. “Something ran into the line causing the leak and it was not reported to anybody,” he said. Officials don’t know when the line was damaged.

Based on current monthly chloramine residual compliance reports, health officials said the water system has met the requirements with Louisiana rules for chloramine disinfectant levels. Five other sites on the system tested negative for the amoeba and one site did not meet the required level of disinfectant.

Boy Scouts sue Maker Scouts for trademark infringement @BoyScouts @makerscout #makerbusiness

by adafruit

Prepared To Sue Hacker Scouts Boyscots- Of Amercia
Mark H. Jaffe spotted that the Boy Scouts are suing Maker Scouts for trademark infringement. We did not know there was a “Maker Scout” but now we do.

This is an action for (1) a violation of 36 U.S.C. § 30905 (asserting BSA’s exclusive rights to emblems, badges, marks, and words); (2) trademark infringement under 15 U.S.C. § 1114(a) (Lanham Act § 32(a)); (3) unfair competition under 15 U.S.C. § 1125(a) (Lanham Act § 43(a)); (4) trademark dilution under 15 U.S.C. § 1125(c) (Lanham Act § 43(c)); …

(5) cybersquatting under 15 U.S.C. § 1125(d) (Lanham Act § 43(d)); and (6) related causes of action under the laws of the State of Texas.

As set forth below, the actions listed above arise, inter alia , out of Defendants’ use in commerce of the marks, words and names MAKER SCOUT and MAKER SCOUT SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING ART MATH (collectively, “the Maker Scout Marks”) in connection with goods and services similar and/or related to those of BSA, Defendants’ registration and use of the domain name “makerscout.com” (the “Maker Scout Domain”) containing Defendants’ website (the “Maker Scout Website”), which displays the offending marks, words and names, and Defendant’s use of MAKER SCOUT on social media web-sites such as Twitter®

Boy Scouts v. Maker Scouts – trademark complaint.pdf by Mark H. Jaffe

This is a slightly different trademark issue as we understand it, Congress gave the Boy Scouts the exclusive right to use the “emblems, badges, descriptive or designating marks, and words or phrases” that they adopt. This started in 1916.

Pearson wants to sell The Economist too, but has to deal with its baroque ownership structure

by Max Nisen
Not the usual sale.

Days after its $1.3 billion sale of the Financial Times, Pearson is looking to sell off its portion of the Economist Group as it transitions to being a purely education-focused company, the FT itself reports (paywall). Even though there was a bit of drama with the sale of the FT–rival bidder Axel Springer reportedly didn’t find out it lost out to Nikkei until minutes before the deal was announced–it was a piece of cake compared to what a sale of The Economist would entail.

Any buyer would gain a premium and profitable company, but almost no control of it, and would have to contend with a potential veto from Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone.

Pearson confirmed that it was in talks, noting, “There is no certainty that this process will lead to a transaction.” Pearson owned the FT outright, but it only owns half of the Economist Group, and owns that as part of an ownership and control scheme that can only be described as byzantine.

The other half is owned by a group of individual shareholders, which include scions of the Rothschild and Schroder banking dynasties, the Cadbury family, and the Agnelli family (which controls Fiat), who have been making noise about buying Pearson out for years.

John Elkann, the heir to the Agnelli fortune, is reportedly leading a buyout attempt by existing shareholders.

Pearson owns only “B” shares in the company, which gives it only six of 13 board seats and no real control. So if the buyer is not one of—or some consortium of—those individual shareholders (who own “A” shares), they’ll have to live with the idea of not having much in the way of economic and management control, in addition to a lack of editorial influence.

And that’s not the end of it. There’s also a separate group of “trust” shares, held by a group of four trustees, including the previously mentioned Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone, Tim Clark, Lord O’Donnell, and Bryan Sanderson, which exist to guarantee ownership and editorial independence. Any transfer of “A” or “B” shares requires their approval. They’re wholly independent of the company’s board, and must approve the appointment of the group’s chairman and The Economist’s editor.

That combination of issues has reportedly scared off some potential buyers (paywall), including Bloomberg, Reuters, and Axel Springer, and helps explain why Pearson’s 50% stake is valued at about half of what the FT fetched, despite the fact that the Economist is more than twice as profitable.

Prices in the $500 million range are being quoted for the 50% in the group, which includes The Economist magazine along with an events business, Congressional Quarterly and Roll Call, and the Economist Intelligence Unit.

There’s also the company’s Mayfair headquarters in London—”the tower,” to staffers—which would be worth over £100 million on the open market, according to the group’s annual report (pdf). Only the self-styled “newspaper’s” editorial staff remain there, with the rest of the company in London in Canary Wharf.

Lafayette movie theater shooting survivor: "You needed a second to think, 'OK, this is real'"

firehose

'Among the chaos, Jeanerette High School English teacher Ali Martin and librarian Jena Meaux were credited with helping save lives. Meaux, who was shot in the leg, told her colleagues that Martin, who was shot in the kneecap, still managed to pull a fire alarm, their former principal Heath Hulin said.'

'The two women killed were 21-year-old Mayci Breaux and 33-year-old Jillian Johnson. Breaux's body was brought to the same hospital where she was preparing to become a radiology technician. Johnson ran clothing and art boutiques, played in a rootsy rock band and planted fruit trees for neighbors and the homeless.'

--

'Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor said his office denied Houser's request for a concealed weapons permit in 2006 because of an arson arrest and a domestic violence complaint.

"He was pretty even-keeled until you disagreed with him or made him mad," said Jeff Hardin, the former mayor of Phenix City, Alabama, just across the state line from Columbus. "Then he became your sworn enemy."

Houser was evicted from his home in Phenix City last year, then returned to throw paint, pour concrete down the plumbing and tamper with a gas line, Taylor said.

Houser's wife filed for divorce in March, saying their differences were irreconcilable.

Pressed to explain why Houser wasn't arrested before, Sheriff Taylor also blamed cuts in the safety net.

"What should be scary for the community is that the cuts being made in mental health around the state are allowing these people, who should not be walking around, to be out in the community," Taylor said.'

'Craft said Houser bought the weapon legally at a pawnshop in Phenix City, Alabama, last year, and that he had visited the theater more than once, perhaps to determine "whether there was anything that could be a soft target for him."'

SOUNDS LIKE A DRIFTER TO ME

'Details quickly emerged about Houser's mental problems, prompting authorities in Louisiana and Alabama to bemoan the underfunding of mental health services in the U.S.

Court records describe erratic behavior and threats of violence that led to a brief involuntary hospitalization in 2008 and a restraining order preventing Houser from approaching family members. Houser "has a history of mental health issues, i.e., manic depression and/or bi-polar disorder," his estranged wife told the judge.

Educated in accounting and law, he owned bars in Georgia — including one where he flew a Nazi banner out front as an anti-government statement. He tried real estate in Phenix City. But Houser's own resume, posted online, says what he really loved to do was make provocative statements at local board meetings and in the media.'

SOUNDS LIKE A DRIFTER TO ME

Amid the tragedy, a tale of heroism emerged: high school English teacher Ali Martin, suffering from a gunshot to the kneecap, made her way to a fire alarm and pulled it. Police say she saved lives, alerting some 300 people in the giant multiplex that something wasn't right.

Kentucky recruit Jamal Murray explodes to beat United States at Pan Am Games

by Tim Cato

meanwhile, in men's sportsball

All in the fourth quarter and overtime!

Team Canada beat Team USA 111-108 on Friday and Kentucky commit Jamal Murray was right in the middle of it.

Murray, who was scoreless entering the final frame, scored all 22 of his points in the fourth quarter and overtime. He also had six assists, showing that he clearly can be a point guard in the loaded Kentucky backcourt next year if they need him to take on those duties.

It's more likely, though, that Murray will play some form of combo guard, given that Tyler Ulis is returning to the backcourt in Kentucky and five-star freshman Isaiah Briscoe is also joining the team. With his 6'5 frame, it's possible Murray spends some time on the wing next season.

This isn't even the biggest breakout Murray has had after he went for 30 in the Nike Hoop Summit. Murray reclassified to the class of 2015 last month and was initially expected to pick Oregon before decided on the Wildcats and John Calipari.

How The Monstars Could Have Beat Tune Squad In 'Space Jam'

firehose

'According to the Harvard College Sports Analysis Collective, who compiled stats for the Space Jam game, two Monstars combined to score 71 of their 77 points: Pound (the alien with Charles Barkley’s talent) and Bupkus (the alien with Patrick Ewing’s). In case you were wondering, the Nerdluck who had stolen Shawn Bradley’s talent tallied 0 points, 0 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals, and 0 blocks (despite being nearly 10 feet tall).

Assuming the events took place after 1993 but before 1995, the ’94-’95 NBA season is our best indicator of player performance at the time of the Tune Squad-Monstars game. According to Basketball-Reference.com’s advance stats, the Nerdlucks didn’t steal the talent of a single player in the top five when it came to VORP ("Value Over Replacement Player"), PER (“Player Efficiency Rating”), or Win Shares Per 48 Minutes.

Factoring all those advanced metrics, the best starting five the Monstars could have chosen would likely have been:

C: David Robinson (8.1 VORP, .273 WS/48, 29.1 PER)
PF: Karl Malone (6.1 VORP, .212 WS/48, 25.1 PER)
SF: Scottie Pippen (7.4 VORP, .188 WS/48, 22.6 PER)
SG: Clyde Drexler (5.9 VORP, .206 WS/48, 22.4 PER)
PG: John Stockton (5.4 VORP, .233 WS/48, 23.3 PER)

(You can argue for Hakeem Olajuwon over Robinson—it's hard not to.)

By using those Win Shares per 48 minutes (the "average number of wins produced by a player per 48 minutes"—check this out for a more in-depth analysis), we can extrapolate that team's performance if they played all 82 games of an NBA regular season without missing a single minute and figure out total wins produced.

What about fatigue, you ask? These are alien monsters, so that argument is absurd. You are being absurd.'

Considering they were leading 66-18 at half, one can’t help but think the Monstars let this crucial game slip away. What could they have done to prevent such a meltdown? The most effective fix would have to have been implemented before the game even started: they should’ve stolen the talent of better NBA players.

New Logo for Atlanta United FC by Adidas

"Atlanta United FC is a Major League Soccer expansion franchise in Atlanta, Georgia that plans to begin play in 2017. The team, which was announced by the league on April 16, 2014, will be owned and operated by Home Depot co-founder and Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, and will play in the New Atlanta Stadium, currently under construction. Following Orlando City SC, United was the second expansion team in five months established in the southeastern United States." (Wikipedia)

Design by: Adidas (according to AJC link below)

Opinion/Notes: You must definitely watch the video below first. It's epic in its rationalization of every detail of the logo. And while all of it sounds true and sincere and relevant it's also a heaping serving of bullshit. Which is fine, it's the kind of bombastic presentation needed to make any kind of waves in the sports and entertainment world these days. The logo is not bad at all. It has a bit of an FC Barcelona feel with the deep red and dark stripes but the actual palette complemented with gold is quite nice. The "A" is big and imposing and I like how it's cropped inside the circle. The typography spelling out the name is not very good though. It's a sans serif with spikes forced upon it and it looks all wobbly and flimsy as typeset in a circle. What the logo does well ultimately is that it somehow feels Atlanta-ish even being as generic as it is.
