Don't blame SpaceX for that rocket on a collision course with the Moon
This past January, astronomer Bill Gray said that the upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket would collide with the Moon sometime in early March. As you might expect, the prediction set off a flurry of media coverage, much of it critical of Elon Musk and his private space firm. After all, the event would be a rare misstep for SpaceX.
But it turns out Elon and company are not about to lose face. Instead, it’s more likely that fate will befall China. That’s because Gray now says he made a mistake in his initial identification of a piece of space debris he and other astronomers dubbed WE0913A in 2015.
When Gray and his colleagues first spotted the object, several clues led them to believe it was the second stage of a Falcon 9 rocket that carried the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s DSCOVR satellite into deep orbit that same year. The object’s identification would have probably gone unreported in mainstream media if astronomers didn’t subsequently discover it was about to collide with the Moon.
“Back in 2015, I (mis)identified this object as 2015-007B, the second stage of the DSCOVR spacecraft,” Gray said in a blog post he published on Saturday that was spotted Ars Technica. “I had pretty good circumstantial evidence for the identification, but nothing conclusive,” Gray added. “That was not at all unusual. Identifications of high-flying space junk often require a bit of detective work, and sometimes, we never do figure out the ID for a bit of space junk.”
We may have never known the actual identity of the debris if not for NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineer Jon Giorgini. He contacted Gray on Saturday to ask about the identification. According to Giorgini, NASA’s Horizons system, a database that can estimate the location and orbit of almost half a million celestial bodies in our solar system, showed that the DSCOVR spacecraft’s trajectory didn’t take it close to the Moon. As such, it would be unusual if its second stage were to stray off course then and hit the satellite. Giorgini’s email prompted Gray to reexamine the data he used to make the initial identification.
Gray now says he’s reasonably certain the rocket that’s about to collide with the moon belongs to China. In October 2014, the country’s space agency launched its Chang’e 5-T1 mission on a Long March 3C rocket. After reconstructing the probable trajectory of that mission, he found that the Long March 3C is the best fit for the mystery object that’s about to hit Earth’s natural satellite. “Running the orbit back to launch for the Chinese spacecraft makes ample sense,” he told The Verge. “It winds up with an orbit that goes past the Moon at the right time after launch.”
Gray went on to tell The Verge that episodes like this underline the need for more information on rockets boosters that travel into deep space. “The only folks that I know of who pay attention to these old rocket boosters are the asteroid tracking community,” he told the outlet. “This sort of thing would be considerably easier if the folks who launch spacecraft — if there was some regulatory environment where they had to report something.”

Intel Wants Customers To Pay For Additional Features on CPUs After They’ve Purchased It

Linux 5.18 will not see a release until Spring 2022, but that is not stopping Intel from plans to support their new Software Defined Silicon (SDSi) mechanism in the open-source operating system. The new Intel SDSi will allow for Xeon processors to allow for features and updates to be installed directly to the processor immediately after purchase. Intel's Sapphire Rapids series chips will be the first processor for the company to offer this feature.
Intel's payable software-upgrading CPU feature to see Spring release in Linux 5.18 support
Twitter user Andreas Schilling notes that this is not the first time Intel has attempted to block computer processors' features behind a paywall. He notes that in 2010, Intel created a part to unlock higher clock speeds and increased memory cache for the Intel Core i3-2xxx series, also known as the Sandy Bridge family of processors.
Regarding SDSi:
It’s not the first time Intel is trying something like Software Defined Silicon. There was the Intel Upgrade Service in 2010 where Intel did add some higher clocks and additional cache to certain Core i3-2xxx (Sandy Bridge) SKUs.https://t.co/poCFbGT81D
— Andreas Schilling (@aschilling) September 28, 2021
Schilling notes that the feature was not a success and was halted by Intel.
During Schilling's tweet, Intel was in several discussions about initiating patches to enable SDSi functionality in Linux. Last year, at this time, Linux was in version 5.15. Now that we are coming into the horizon of Linux 5.18, Intel is prepared to launch the new feature in the upcoming kernel.
Hans de Goede, a seasoned Linux developer for Red Hat and several other hardware-related projects, states that "Assuming no major issues are found, the plan is to get this in before the 5.18 merge window."
What is Intel Software Defined Silicon (SDSi)?
Intel Software Defined Silicon (SDSi) enables extra silicon elements in current and deployed server processors through the software. Intel has not divulged its future goals facilitating its paywalled CPU software-upgradable measures.
User-selected Features Capabilities
Viewing the current information about Intel's SDSi program, it does appear to have its advantages without looking at the issue of having to pay for any features. Intel's Xeon processors are rich in features, such as support for as much as 4.5 TB of memory per individual socket, network virtualization functionality, Intel's Speed Select technology, as well as colossal SGX enclave size. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Recently, the company began offering infrastructure as a service (IaaS), virtual machine density, liquid cooling, search capability, media processing, and more.
With its upcoming Xeon fourth-gen scalable 'Sapphire Rapids' processors, Intel will offer specialized variants of its Xeon chipset, such as:
- L- Large DDR Memory Support (up to 4.5TB)
- M- Medium DDR Memory Support (up to 2TB)
- N- Networking/Network Function Virtualization
- S- Search
- T- Thermal
- V- VM Density Value
- Y- Intel Speed Select Technology
Recognizing that not all users will need every option available, Intel chooses to offer specific features to their customers without adding further unusable options. Intel's third-gen Xeon series offers 57 variations, but each provides the same amount of efficient cores, TDP, and boost clocks. The only difference between the variations is manufacture-locked features. Instead of offering a vast number of processors, all with the same capabilities—with some features locked—the company plans to create a few processors so customers can choose their attributes and not have to worry about additional unused offerings. Also, Intel can limit the amount of cost due to creating multiple versions for users. Unfortunately, from a consumer standpoint, Intel is looking at this move to create a micro transactional plan for the upcoming chips. And, customers are not happy.
The Negative Impact of Pay-As-You-Need Features
When initially announced, the Internet was already abuzz about the impact of designing hardware with microtransactions. Gamers have already experienced microtransactions in leading games, unlocking new skins, more accessibility, and more for varying prices. Creating hardware with the same concept has a similar backlash that gamers experience.
Only a matter of time before you bring this to end user CPUs and we have to pay monthly to overclock or even pay per months of usage. You should be ashamed of yourselves as developers.
-Eric Kosovec, coder on GitHub
Between Intel SDSi and AMD PSB (which locks CPUs to platforms), it's a tough battle to choose which is the most retarded, anti-consumer feature.
— Danilo "18pF flip-flop" Cominotti (@dcominottim) February 10, 2022
That Intel SDSi thing rubs me the wrong way, in the sense that it's a precursor to the hypothetical future where I have to unlock the floating-point units on my desktop CPU with microtransactions
— meta (@eigenform) September 28, 2021
Outside of Intel choosing to allow consumers to pay for additional features on their chip, the negative impact it appears to be having is that the company is not disclosing a lot of information about the new process and even defending any of the backlash currently received.
Intel's new SDSi program will be available in Linux 5.18, available in Spring 2022.

should I get IV fluids for a hangover at work?
This post, should I get IV fluids for a hangover at work? , was originally published by Alison Green on Ask a Manager.
A reader writes:
A local company where I live advertises “recreational” IV fluids on the radio. They push the fluids for recovery from illness, colds, and hangovers. Their latest ad suggests that their mobile unit can come to your place of work and administer your hangover “cure” at your job. This horrifies me in so many ways I can’t count them, but what do you think about this from an employee and workplace point of view?
Where have these people worked in the past that this seemed like a good way to market their service?!
As much as I do like the idea of telling people I have to delay a meeting while I get IV fluids for a hangover … it’s an obviously bad idea.
And if you have a cold or illness that requires fluids administered by IV, your coworkers probably won’t appreciate you being at work, particularly right now. It’s hard to imagine a faster way of alarming your colleagues, in fact.
That said, they could probably do good business with this office.
9th Grade Angst-Friday Fiction

How do you lose those 9th grade blues
DeClements
1984
Today’s selection is definitely dated and for extra giggles, a bit creepy. This book is the second in the Elsie series by DeClements. The first book is Nothing’s Fair in Fifth Grade, where we meet Elsie Edwards. Elsie is the proverbial “fat girl” and is struggling with weight.
In this sequel, Elsie is a girl who has lost the weight and now is deemed pretty by her peers. But wait, she is still not happy! Elsie can’t believe boys are interested in her. But wait! A senior boy named Craddoc (what is with this name?) starts asking Elsie out and eventually they start dating.
Craddoc is a football player and kind of the “it” guy at high school. Elsie initially thinks this is weird since she is a freshman and he is a senior. I got ick vibes from the get go. Then I read read Craddoc’s line to Elsie: “maybe it’s lucky I got you so young so I can train you.” (Run Elsie, this guy is no good!)
I will give points to the book for discussing that weight loss and beauty does not equal happiness. I also think these are probably tapping into some preteen thoughts and anxieties and no doubt this book would have been popular. Today’s preteens would probably laugh at the scenarios and recognize Craddoc as a creep from the get go. Also, how many of today’s kids will get the reference to “dittos”, waiting by the phone for a boy to call, and pop culture references.

The Totally Normal and Perfectly Legal Ways We Stored Official White House Documents
“Trump’s shredding of paper in the White House was far more widespread and indiscriminate than previously known and—despite multiple admonishments—extended throughout his presidency.” — Washington Post
We’ve been getting a lot of blowback for how we managed White House documents during Trump’s presidency. I’m a former White House aide, and I want to explain the totally normal and perfectly legal ways we preserved these historic and confidential records. I’m also hoping to generate some buzz for my upcoming tell-all book, but that’s unrelated.
We started our alternative bookkeeping by simply tearing documents into smaller and smaller pieces, which made it easier to both store and, in cases of extreme duress, ingest. To honor our inner child, we’d sometimes cut the docs into strips and staple them into paper chain links to decorate the West Wing.
Now, the burn bags are being blown way out of proportion. Think of it this way: your beloved grandmother’s ashes are kept in a porcelain urn on your bookshelf, so why can’t random scraps of paper from the president’s desk be stuffed into a reusable fabric Target bag and scorched to smithereens?
And the whole toilet thing? We weren’t flushing documents down the toilet; we were funneling them into a secure filing system in the hydro-chamber of secrets. Plus, if we really needed the documents back for a FOIA request, we had an intern on standby with a Dyson supersonic hair dryer fired up and ready to go.
As I exclusively cover in my book, we also buried a tranche of documents in the White House lawn. You know how on CSI: Miami they were always finding bodies under freshly poured concrete? It was like that, except it was President Trump’s call logs with Ukraine wrapped up in a tarp six feet under the new tennis courts.
We also stored some draft executive orders in the backroom of a suburban Paper Source. No one has ever asked if there was more paper in the back of a Paper Source, so it seemed like a clever place to abandon a heap of classified communications from January 6th, 2021. Sadly, that Paper Source burned down. This was due to faulty wiring and shelves chock full of flammable materials, but boy was it convenient for us.
A lot of fast food means a lot of wasted plastic utensils and napkins. So when we brought in Big Macs and Happy Meals for the Clemson Tigers, we went green by repurposing some old White House expense reports for those greasy linebacker fingers.
We often stashed confidential cables from foreign dignitaries in the White House Bunker among rows of Melania’s bloody nightmare Christmas trees, alternate electors from Arizona, and the lawnmower. Kids love that thing!
You guys spent a lot of time complaining about how the Trumps didn’t have any White House pets, but the family actually reared fourteen different hamsters throughout his presidency. Cage shavings are expensive! Jared Kushner’s torn-up security clearance background check paperwork was a good, cheap alternative.
Before looping Alabama into Hurricane Dorian’s path, we tested out Trump’s Sharpies by blacking out dates and names in the White House visitor logs. We then put those logs through a shredder for good measure. Some documents required many preservation tactics to “finish the job.”
We also launched a couple stuffed filing cabinets into space via a billion-dollar SpaceX expedition, tied memos to stray dogs with twine, and carted a bunch of records down to Mar-a-Lago and put them in the same vault where the pee tape is stored.
Listen, judge our methods if you like, but at the end of the day, we were pseudo-compliant (if it suited us) when required by court order to turn over documents. All those tidbits and more will be fleshed out in my book, Shred White and Blue, which you can preorder on Kindle Unlimited.

update: my best employee quit on the spot because I wouldn’t let her go to her college graduation
This post, update: my best employee quit on the spot because I wouldn’t let her go to her college graduation , was originally published by Alison Green on Ask a Manager.
Remember the manager back in 2016 whose best employee quit on the spot because he wouldn’t let her go to her college graduation? She had been raised in foster care and had no living family, was homeless for a while, and managed to get herself through school and graduate. He wanted to “teach her professional norms” (!!) after she quit because he wouldn’t give her the time off.
I think all of us who read that letter have long hoped the employee is doing well. This week I got an email from someone who appears to be her, saying she had just found the post:
This is about me. I know for a fact it is because this exact thing happened to me in that time frame. And I know exactly who it was.
I’d like to tell this person that I have a general idea of the social norms but (redacted — medical conditions) make it impossible to stay on this side of reality very long. I did however get medicated and become a GM myself that would never be a jerk like he was.
And it wasn’t about the graduation. At freaking all. It was so much more than that. It was about having one day that was just mine.
Joke’s on him though. That diploma has gotten me further in life than I would have gotten without.

Simple Design Tips for Any Springshare System
Whether you’re creating a LibGuide or setting up your organization's LibAnswers FAQ groups, keeping basic organization and design principles in mind can help you get your intended message across clearly and concisely! We have gathered some simple, yet impactful tips to use throughout your Springshare products.
Design With Your Audience In Mind
The look, feel, and functionality of your LibGuides, LibCal site, LibAnswers homepage, etc. will vary drastically depending on who you are creating the resource for. Springy sites created for public libraries will undoubtedly look and feel different than those created for academic or special libraries. Internal tools created for library staff will use a different set of vocabulary altogether. The good news is, you know your patrons and staff best!

-
- Getting Started: Gather Your Content. Whether you are gathering subject information, reading lists, or frequently asked questions, start by making a thorough list of everything you want to include. This will help you define the purpose, message, and structure.
- Create Buckets. At this point, you will likely start to notice natural groups forming based on information type or intended audience – you are a librarian, after all.
- Map it out. Grab a pencil and paper and sketch out your ideal finished product. As an example, if you’re creating a brand new LibGuide, you might think about the groups of information or how many columns to use, or whether you prefer a top or side navigation.
- Find the Key Message. At this point, don’t worry about including every image or piece of information, just think about what you want to highlight. If something is really important, make sure to include it at the top or middle of your sketch. Try experimenting with the size and placement of important words to see how that changes things.
Create Visual Structure
Navigating a website that is mostly comprised of text can be challenging. Breaking the text up with white space, images, and thinking about the hierarchy of information, both visually and conceptually, is critical to making the intended message pop. We've gathered simple, yet impactful tips that can be applied to an entire LibGuide or a block of text.
Simple Design Tips:
- Use concise headers. This will allow the viewer to skim the page and find the information they are looking for more easily.
- Break content up into sections that are easy to navigate. This principle can be applied to data sets, staff schedules, FAQ groups, even the header image on your LibCal site.
- Include a call to action, when appropriate. This could be a highlighted link for the patron to register for an event or learn more about a specific topic.
- Use white space! Doing so will help your patrons find the information they are looking for and help keep your LibGuide, LibWizard Tutorial, or even your LibCal Homepage from looking cluttered.
- Include visuals to help get your message across or catch attention.
- Color has an impact. Highlight important content with color pops. Using a specific color scheme will emphasize the connection to your organization or institution.
Consider Accessibility
Accessibility is a critical piece of the design process and it's something that we take seriously at Springshare. We'd suggest watching our recorded training session on LibGuides Accessibility and LibAnswers FAQ Accessibility.
Quick Tips:
-
Check out this Alt Text Decision Tree to help determine if an image needs alt text.
- Use headers. For example, in LibGuides, your guide title is automatically set to be a header1, box titles are header2, so any headings inside of boxes should be set to header3.
- Check text contrast with WebAIM Color Contrast Checker. Use this tool to verify that text can be read based on the text and background colors, ensuring your site meets and exceeds accessibility guidelines.

The Relative Value of Big Science Prizes
Back in 2013 The Economist magazine published this chart showing the amount of money awarded with each of the big science prizes. The amounts for most or all of these prizes has since risen. The amount for the Ig Nobel Prize now, in a way, tops the list. Each winner (or winning team) of an Ig Nobel Prize now gets ten trillion dollars — a Zimbabwean ten trillion dollar bill.
That Zimbabwean currency itself was the subject of a prize. The 2009 Ig Nobel Prize for Mathematics was awarded to Gideon Gono, governor of Zimbabwe’s Reserve Bank, for giving people a simple, everyday way to cope with a wide range of numbers — from very small to very big — by having his bank print bank notes with denominations ranging from one cent ($.01) to one hundred trillion dollars ($100,000,000,000,000).
Dr. Gono explained the reasoning behind his invention, in the book Zimbabwe’s Casino Economy — Extraordinary Measures for Extraordinary Challenges, Gideon Gono, ZPH Publishers, Harare, 2008, ISBN 978-079-743-679-4.

Son, Your Mother and I Are Worried About the Quality of Your Supernatural Slash Fiction
Knock, knock, son. Hope you’re not busy. Listen, your mother was cleaning your room and she found this notebook under your mattress. I promise, no one was snooping, but we had a look at it. I have to say, your mother and I are worried about the quality of your Supernatural slash fiction.
No, you’re not in trouble.
First of all, we want you to know that you have great taste in your source material. Many people use the CW’s roster of teen-oriented melodramas as a source of creative fuel. Once you get that writing bug, you see inspiration in every pair of wandering demon-fighting beefcakes you see. I know I did.
But based on what we read, you really need to buckle down.
There’s a lot of good here. But there’s a strong tendency for all the characters to sound the same. You know the salvage yard owner Bobby Singer and the Nephilim Jack Kline have different tones. When you write them, put yourself in their shoes. And you don’t need to have characters tell us how full of mystically energized Satanic lust they are. Show us!
Son, I want you to know that this isn’t a criticism. Your mother and I are happy that you’re getting your ideas for the sexual tension between the troubled angel Castiel and that wisecracking scamp Dean Winchester down on paper. That scene when they end up having to sleep skin to skin in Hell because Lucifer has extinguished its fires and they lost their clothes and they need to stay warm? That could have been straight out of the show.
Except for the penetration, of course.
Great slash fiction doesn’t happen by itself. It takes dedication, craft, and above all, a willingness to accept constructive input. You’ve read my Dukes of Hazzard slash fiction, and your mother’s ongoing series of novellas about the intimate relationship between Quantum Leap’s Dr. Sam Beckett and the holographic Admiral Al Calavicci, who could never consummate their intimacy due to the latter being a hologram. Take another look at the third installment, A Leap for Love. It’s a master class in erotic shipping.
Yes, your mother and I edit each other’s work. Some of our happiest times as an old married couple has been to sit down with some chamomile and bang out a ream of Babylon 5 erotica.
That’s right. Banging for Babylon, we called it.
And son, I want you to know, you have great ideas, like this flashback sequence of the family patriarch John Winchester encountering an angel and engaging in a sweaty wrestling match that both recalls the Biblical tale of Jacob and would make any sane person horny as hell. You need to harness that creativity and remember clear narrative structure, grammar, perspective. That’s just good storytelling.
If you ever want some notes, or even just a proofread, let us know. We support you and we’re thrilled you’re expressing yourself.
I’m proud of you, son. I know you have the makings of a great slash fiction writer in you.
Now get writing. Sam and Crowley won’t make out by themselves!

We Need to Stop Gentrification, Right After I Move into This Neighborhood
In every American city, long-time residents are being pushed out as wealthier newcomers fight for precious space. We need to stop the tidal wave of gentrification, and we need to make sure we stop it right after I, a young college-educated professional, move into this neighborhood.
Entire families are forced to leave their homes when gentrification raises rents. I saw so many people moving out of the building my mom and I toured. From that day on, I vowed to fight gentrification with every fiber of my being once I was firmly safe from the consequences of that fight.
The people who live here should have a say in what their community looks like. I’m going to live here now, so I’ll happily share my thoughts loudly, clearly, and also very loudly.
Do all these newcomers (the people who will move in after me) need to live in this neighborhood? Every day I bump into former college classmates on the street. I want to scream, We (the neighborhood I’m just about to move into) don’t want you here!
Gentrification is evident in the rapidly rising housing costs. I barely convinced my parents to pay my rent. Thankfully they could afford to subsidize my vague lifestyle, so now I can help fight against others trying to do the same.
The people moving here don’t respect the neighborhood traditions I learned about a week ago and have avoided ever since.
I’m tired of hard-working people having to leave their long-time homes, and I’m really tired of those people saying it’s my fault. Don’t they know I live here now, right in the heart of, uh… well, the neighborhood’s name isn’t important. What matters is keeping people, especially myself, in their homes, however recently they signed their lease.
The fight against gentrification begins now… that I have the key to my new place. I hope you join in the fight! (From afar.)
