sciencehabit writes Earth has seen its share of catastrophes, the worst being the 'big five' mass extinctions scientists traditionally talk about. Now, paleontologists are arguing that a sixth extinction, 260 million years ago, at the end of a geological age called the Capitanian, deserves to be a member of the exclusive club. In a new study, they offer evidence for a massive die-off in shallow, cool waters in what is now Norway. That finding, combined with previous evidence of extinctions in tropical waters, means that the Capitanian was a global catastrophe.

The $10 million mission in collaboration with the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling and the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program, will offer the researchers an unprecedented view, made possible courtesy of new technology. "The Chicxulub impact crater has been a remarkable scientific opportunity for the 20 years since it's been discovered" researcher with the project and the University of Texas, Austin, Sean Gulick says. And this new opportunity to unearth the core, may provide far more answers than researchers could have ever imagined. "We think that the peak ring is the record of the material that rebounded and splashed outward [after the impact]."

The researchers believe that their models have created an accurate view of the conditions surrounding the impact and the crater, however, soon they will have rock-hard evidence to back their claims. They believe that aside from providing a view into the death of millions of species that more recent layers of rock could reveal just how long it took for life to return to the area—an important, yet missing, layer to our past.

Project leaders have not commented on whether their headquarters will in fact be Señor Frog's.

If you've been diligently building a collection of Simpsons episodes on disc, you're in for a rude surprise. Show runner Al Jean has revealed that Fox is discontinuing disc releases of the long-running cartoon. As sources confirmed to us and The Hollywood Reporter, the studio doesn't believe there's a point to hard copies at this stage -- now that you can watch The Simpsons online, it "made more sense" to focus on internet services. With the show constantly airing around the world and in heavy rotation on FXX, it's a bit more accessible than other series even though DVD and Blu-ray are still big business.

The Simpsons' long run and availability makes it a unique case, but the rise of apps and streaming services bidding for rights means other season-by-season TV boxed sets could follow. All in all, it's bad news for completionists that value having an offline copy and so far there's no good replacement for that. Now that Fox is trying it out, our only question is which series will leave the shelf for the cloud next?

Not sure if you need a new high-res display? The 4K footage SpaceX just posted of its rocket launches might be enough to push any reasonable person over the line.
