My Top 30 Fonts with the Sexiest Ampersands

by Chris Spooner

Whats your dream character? Small and curvy? Tall and strong? Whatever your type, you’ll see the most attractive glyphs in this typographic beauty contest. The ampersand is every typography addict’s favourite ligature, but which font has the best? I searched the world’s font foundries to create a showcase of the most beautiful ampersands, find the one that takes your fancy.

30 Sexiest Ampersands

Originally a ligature that combined the letters E and T of the Latin word ‘et’, the ampersand is now a common replacement for the word ‘and’. Its form has evolved over centuries from the more script-like ‘et’ ligature where the letters are clearly visible, to the more stylised character we recognise on our keyboards today. I browsed through 100s of typefaces to find the font with the most unique and flamboyant ampersand designs. Which one is your favourite?

Eloquent JF Pro

Eloquent JF Pro

Eloquent is a digital revival of the old classic Pistilli Roman. Many regard Pistilli as having the best ampersand of all time with its elegant swashes. You can actually find a free replica of Pistilli which also contains this alternate ampersand glyph under the  character.

Caslon No 337

Caslon No 337

Some of the most elegant ampersands come from the script era of old style typefaces. Caslon is a great example with its flowing swooshes and strokes.

Baskerville Italic

Baskerville Italic

Baskerville Italic is the go-to ampersand when you want to add a touch of class to your designs. All the hipster typographers either use this glyph as their logo, or have it tattooed on their wrist!

Carmen Fiesta

Carmen Fiesta

Carmen Fiesta is a display typeface that looks like it has come straight from the circus, but within the glyph set of wild ornaments and fleurons is a pretty ampersand with elegant ball terminals.

Mastadoni

Mastadoni

With a name that combines masthead and didone you know that Mastadoni is going to feature some ultra modern characters. Its ampersand has extra high contrast with some sharp swashes. Be sure to also take a peek at its ugly sister in the italic font.

Campton

Campton

Most of the typefaces in this showcase are serifs, but that’s not to say sans-serifs aren’t beautiful. Campton features a minimalist ampersand with some interesting negative space, almost like a broken heart!

Caslon Graphique

Caslon Graphique

Caslon Graphique is a classic originating from 1725 that was ahead of its time. Does anyone else think this ampersand looks like the witch from Snow White, hunched over and offering a poisoned apple? “Go on, take a bite!”

Hera Big

Hera Big

The stylish curves of the Hera Big ampersand look great in all its weights. Bold is shown here, but it also looks gorgeous in ExtraThin.

Miller Display Italic

Miller Display Italic

Like Baskerville, this gem of an ampersand can only be found in the Italic fonts of Miller. There’s also a Small Caps variant that tightens up the proportions.

Reina

Reina

Reina’s ornamental swashes give its ampersand a distinctive appearance compared to the usual ball terminals on modern serifs. Check out the engraved variant that almost confuses the eye with harsh black and white shapes.

Fette Fraktur

Fette Fraktur

For a scary blackletter typeface Fette Fraktur has quite a camp looking ampersand! The rest of the font is characterised by hard lines and sharp points, but this character proudly strikes a sassy pose.

Clarendon

Clarendon

Clarendon’s ampersand has the typographic equivalent of the hollywood jawline with its solid slab serif presence and perfectly balanced measurements.

My Darling

My Darling

The extremely high contrast of My Darling almost breaks this ampersand up into four separate pieces, but the result is a curvaceous design without a single straight line.

Tom’s Roman

Tom's Roman

The sophisticated script like appearance of Tom’s Roman sends your eyes wandering as you follow the curves right the way around its body.

Thorowgood

Thorowgood

If Thorowgood was in human form it would be breaking the Internet every day with that butt!

Milano

Milano

Milano’s ampersand is cute and dainty, but also strong and confident. It has that classic chic style that never goes out of fashion.

Chino Display

Chino Display

It’s unusual to see the early ‘et’ style ampersand with such a modern style with broad brush strokes, but it works so well with soft and cuddly Chino Display Ultra.

Carousel

Carousel

Carousel provides the perfect contrast between broad and thin strokes to give it balanced shape.

Kings Caslon

Kings Caslon

Kings Caslon is a very similar ampersand to the related Caslon No 337 typeface featured above, but its noble roots make it tall and proud.

Clearface

Clearface

The Clearface ampersand uses a terminal where the others loop to form a bowl. The result is a trendy character that dares to be different.

Bodoni

Bodoni

Bodoni is a timeless classic that’s smart and professional in its regular format, but can pull off the casual look in italic.

Lust

Lust

The seductive curves of Lust make it quite a risqué ampersand. Described by its designer as having the leggy body of a Brazilian supermodel.

Sahara Bodini

Sahara Bodoni

Sahara Bodoni is the Pamela Anderson of the typographic world. This is what happens when you take the naturally beautiful Bodoni and go OTT on the cosmetic surgery.

Manhattan

Manhattan

Manhattan’s ampersand is an Art Deco work of art. It prioritises form over function but it’s an interesting sculpture to admire.

Domani CP

Domani CP

The original ‘et’ ligature can be clearly seen in Domani’s ampersand, which is a strange combination of historic script and didone style.

Avia

Avia

Avia is a size zero supermodel ampersand. Incredibly beautiful but so thin it looks like its going to break.

Port Vintage

Port Vintage

As an experimental didone typeface Port Vintage has multiple experimental ampersands, 7 to be exact. They’re all just as crazy as this one too.

Perla

Perla

Perla’s ampersand has such thick and luscious curves it creates even more flowing shapes in the negative space.

Model 4F

Model 4F

The multi-lingual Model 4F typeface has some extravagant characteristics that gives an exotic foreign appearance.

Brenta

Brenta

Brenta’s ampersand has a classic style with a prominent serif, but its Italic font’s unusual pose really catches the eye with a leg like descender dangling below the baseline.

A Fresh, Happy Holiday Apartment in Barcelona

by Caroline Williamson

A Fresh, Happy Holiday Apartment in Barcelona

Located in Barcelona, Spain, the Tyche Apartment serves as a holiday residence for an Italian family. Designed by CaSA Colombo and Serboli Architecture in collaboration with Margherita Serbol, the property is housed within an Art Nouveau building in Barcelona’s Eixample district. The renovation rendered the original layout’s issue of too many small, separated spaces, isolating both ends of the apartment. The result is a colorful, relaxing home complete with three bedrooms and historical details intact.

Tyche-Apartment-Colombo-Serboli-CaSA-2

In order to make the most of the natural light, the apartment’s layout was completely reconfigured into more usable rooms. Light floods the living room, eating area, and kitchen which has white walls and restored original windows. False ceilings were removed to reveal the Catalan vaults that are a terracotta finish.

Tyche-Apartment-Colombo-Serboli-CaSA-2a

Buildings of this era typically had hydraulic tile and the homeowners wanted to reintroduce it after removing the synthetic parquet floors. The new floors have a hexagonal pattern in the center portion of the room in fun, contemporary colors that match the decor.

Overall, the palette throughout is white mixed with soft pastels giving a relaxing vibe.

Gartner Innovation Center in Tel Aviv

by Caroline Williamson

Gartner Innovation Center in Tel Aviv

Studio BA designed the new Gartner Innovation Center in Tel Aviv with a young startup feel. The office is located in a 100 year old building which lent itself to the employees working in a fairly open environment with some smaller, more private areas for concentration.

Gartner-Innovation-Center-Studio-BA-2

They brought in new, innovative ideas to the traditional space to coincide with the company itself. Parts of the original structure are kept and merged along with newer furnishings, like lighting, 3D printed objects, and geometric design elements.

London’s dizzying sky pool is not for those with fear of heights

by Inigo del Castillo

London’s dizzying sky pool is not for those with fear of heights

In London, developers are planning on building a 10-storey high translucent pool that acts both as a bridge between two luxury apartments and as an agoraphobic’s worst nightmare.

Called the ‘Sky Pool’, it comes with protective 8-inch glass and lets swimmers enjoy views from 115-feet up. The world-first structure will be part of the Embassy Gardens development in Nine Elms, where two thousand homes are up for sale. Construction is set to begin next year, with the first turnover of homes expected to be in 2018.

‘My vision for the Sky Pool stemmed from a desire to push the boundaries in the capability of construction and engineering’, said Ballymore Group CEO Sean Mulryan. ‘I wanted to do something that had never been done before’.

‘The experience of the pool will be truly unique; it will feel like floating through the air in central London’, he added.

No need to worry about falling off this spectacular pool though, as we probably won’t even be able to access it anyway with apartment prices start at £602,000 ($940,279). Whew! Good thing we can’t afford scary features like this!

Plastic Life: Photographs of tiny people that shy away from innocence (NSFW)

by Katy Cowan

While many miniature figurine photo projects are quite charming and innocent, Parisian photographer Vincent Bousserez likes to take things to another level, adding a little darkness, nudity and humour to his miniature worlds.

Bousserez, who lives and works in Paris, began his 'Plastic Life' series simply for his own entertainment but he soon grabbed the attention of many admiring fan, and began to exhibit his unusual work at galleries throughout Europe.

From setting up seemingly innocent scenes around nude bottoms and nipples, to planting miniature figurines in the most random of places, doing the darkest of things – you'll enjoy browsing through his photographs of tiny people, all supposedly based on human vices. Plastic Life now enjoys a global cult following, and you can become part of that following by visiting www.vincentbousserez.com.

Graphic designer creates Citee Fashion: intricate city maps printed on t-shirts

by Katy Cowan

If you're proud of your home city and you fancy parading that local pride around with you, then Sheffield graphic designer Alex Szabo-Haslam has created a series of unique t-shirts perfect for you.

Citee is a Kickstarter campaign featuring 80 hand-finished t-shirts showing intricately crafted maps of cities all over the world. From Brighton to Berlin, Norwich to New York, there's a t-shirt for you.

Alex explains his thinking behind the project: "I love maps. Whether they show huge cities, small towns, or rural villages, there's something wonderful about maps – the rivers, roads and buildings look beautiful. I've always wanted a set of map t-shirts, but could never quite find the right thing, so I've spent months obsessively creating my own."

Fancy getting your mitts on your home city t-shirt? Check out the list of those featured on Citee t-shirts, and watch this space for the official launch of Alex's new venture – as the Kickstarter campaign was a huge success, and so is going ahead.

Fashion Illustrations with Embroidered Accents and Accessories by Izziyana Suhaimi

by Christopher Jobson

suhaimi-7

Singapore-based artist Izziyana Suhaimi introduces embroidered accents to her carefully rendered pencil and watercolor illustrations. Patterns of flowers unfold much like a tapestry across the paper canvas creating pieces she refers to as “evidence of the hand and of time.” For her series The Looms in Our Bones Suhaimi focuses mostly on fashion acessories where scarves, hats, and other clothing is depicted in thread, while she also uses the same techniques for more abstract shapes and designs. From her artist statement:

Embroidery for me is a quiet and still act, where each stitch represents a moment passed. The building of stitches then becomes a representation of time passing and the final work is like a physical manifestation of time – a time object. Each stitch is also a recording of the maker’s thoughts and emotions. I enjoy the duality of embroidery, in its movements of stabbing, cutting, covering, building, repairing, taking apart. Every stitch made seems to unfold a story and withhold it at the same time.

Ferrolic: A Clock with a Liquid Face Powered by Magnetism

by Christopher Jobson

clock-1

Way back in 2000 I downloaded a screensaver designed by Yugo Nakamura called DropClock that tied in with your systems’ internal time to create a functional clock face depicting Helvetica numbers dropping into water in slow motion. It was mesmerizing to watch and I kept it running for years. Designer Zelf Koelman took the idea of merging time and liquid a step further by creating Ferrolic, a self-contained clock that literally displays time with liquid. It’s almost exactly what would happen if a digital clock and a lava lamp had a baby.

Ferrolic utilizes ferrofluid—a liquid that becomes strongly magnetized in the presence of a magnetic field—to display recognizable shapes in response to magnets embedded inside the clock’s aluminum frame. The moving blobs look almost alive, a fact not lost on Koelman who refers to them as “creatures.” He shares:

Ferrolic was designed from a strong fascination for the magical material Ferro Fluid. The natural dynamics of this fluid makes that this display bridges the gap between everyday digital screens and tangible reality.

Because the fluid behaves in a unpredictable way, it is possible to give the bodies perceived in the Ferrolic display a strong reference to living creatures. It is this lively hood that enables Ferrolic to show a meaningful narrative like for instance having the creatures play tag. In addition the natural flow of the material, it can be used to form recognisable shapes and characters. Ferrolic uses these both layers in parallel in order to display scenes and transitions in an poetic, almost dance like, choreographed way.

The clocks are a bit of a prototype so far, only 24 of the devices are available at a price of about $8,000 each, making it much more of a limited edition art piece than a consumer-grade alarm clock. You can learn more here. (via Boing Boing, Fast Company)

Japanese Artist Places a Modern Spin on Centuries-Old Woodblock Prints Through Animated GIFs

by Kate Sierzputowski

train-new

A Japanese artist is placing a modern spin on a centuries-old technique, animating Japanese woodblock prints in the style typically reserved for TV show recaps and continuously looping memes. The artist, who who goes by Segawa thirty-seven, uses Adobe Photoshop and After Effects to alter the static images and inlay elements of sci-fi and modern culture—bringing in Segways and alien spaceships into the fixed landscapes-turned-gifs.

Other gifs produced by the artist are far more subtle, one in particular showing a crowded street of people lit by moonlight, their shadows traveling from the right to the left side of the screen as the moon travels through the sky. Another shows a scene of people gazing out the window as a high speed train endlessly rushes by.

You can see more of Segawa thirty-seven’s woodblock print animations on his Twitter. (via Spoon & Tamago

A 1930’s Traditional Home Becomes a Modern, Open Residence

by Caroline Williamson

A 1930’s Traditional Home Becomes a Modern, Open Residence

Behnisch Architekten took on the radical renovation of a 1930’s traditional home in Stuttgart, Germany and transformed it into a modern, open residence. The project involved blending the original home with a new, modern structure on the second floor which blends seamlessly.

Behnisch-Architekten-Haus-Reno-Stuttgart-2

Originally, the house had a double-pitched roof, which Behnisch removed, along with dividing walls to give the interior a more open feel. The 2nd story facade was taken down to make way for the new exterior.

Behnisch-Architekten-Haus-Reno-Stuttgart-3

The 2nd story looks to be like a transparent glass box with its floor-to-ceiling windows.

Behnisch-Architekten-Haus-Reno-Stuttgart-4

Sustainability was a primary concern with the renovation. To reduce the carbon footprint, they used prefabricated laminated wood and geothermal heat pumps to reduce energy usage.

They also installed triple glazed windows to keep the heat from transferring.

Behnisch-Architekten-Haus-Reno-Stuttgart-6

A metal mesh shutter system was used on the top floor to help reduce the amount of UV rays that entered the home and to aid in regulating the temperature inside.

Kawaii Monster Café in Tokyo explodes with sticky cakes and pastel macaroon towers

by Tilly Martin

que viajeeee tssssh no?

If you love all things kawaii and can’t get enough of the Japanese pop culture then the Kawaii Monster Café is sure to fill a gap in your life. Popping up in the fashionable Tokyo district of Harajuku, the café explodes with bright colours, craziness and a large dose of kawaii appeal.

Designed by Japanese visual artist Sebastian Masuda, the café is split into four different zones, each offering their own theme – Mushroom Disco, Milk Stand, Mel-Tea Room and Jellyfish Bar Experiment, with the Sweets-Go-Round as the focal point of the whole café.

As if the cake themed decorations, oversized baby bottle light fixtures and melting macaroon towers weren’t enough, the staff that make up the Monster Girl gang even dress the part. And as for the menu, you can expect to order all kinds of sweet or ‘poison’ delights, rainbow pasta and a monster BLT. The café definitely ticks all the boxes for an immersive Japanese pop culture experience.

How Wood Shavings Become Environmentally-Friendly Acoustic Panels

by Caroline Williamson

How Wood Shavings Become Environmentally-Friendly Acoustic Panels

We’ve shared our love of Swedish brand BAUX and their acoustic wall tiles and panels, for not only their sound absorbing qualities but also the really cool and colorful geometric patterns you can create. With forests aplenty in Sweden, it’s only natural that Swedish designers look to them for inspiration and that’s just what the group who formed BAUX did. They felt building materials should be both functional and beautiful without compromising environmental standards. The idea for BAUX tiles and panels came together when they began working with Träullit, a family business that uses cement and wood wool (wood shavings) to make boards and panels. Those two simple materials are the backbone for these environmentally-friendly acoustic components. Let’s have a look at the process in this month’s Deconstruction.

Decon-Baux-Acoustic-Tiles-1-wood

The wood is collected outside the factory in Småland, Sweden. This way, we can minimize the environmental effect since it is local.

Put rainbows in your home with this Nyan Cat paint roller

Put rainbows in your home with this Nyan Cat paint roller

In celebration of same-sex marriage legalization all over the US, hobbyist Antzy Carmasaic decided that it wasn’t enough to turn his Facebook profile picture into a rainbow – he had to include everything else as well!

Enter the Rainbow Roller, a DIY tool that efficiently paints violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. To make it, Carmasaic used a little bit of ingenuity, a sponge, acrylic sheets, paint, and glue. The result is a one-of-a-kind paint roller that celebrates equality and love.

‘One day while just surfing around on the internet, I came across the nyan cat GIF leaving a trail of rainbow in its wake’, he wrote. ‘That got me thinking about how to do the same in the real world. After a bit of trial and experimentation with different types of sponges and paints, I managed to create the rainbow roller as I had imagined it’.

See the step-by-step instructions for the DIY project here.

A Naked Blueberry Tower Sponge Cake

by Jan Halvarson
Jimena Azpeitia

vamos por mas blue berrys!!!

—This post is sponsored by the B.C. Blueberry Council,  who represents over 800 blueberry growers, located in some of Canada's most rich and fertile farmland. Their growers are proud to produce high quality highbush blueberries (the larger, plump berries) that are enjoyed in Canada and worldwide.  Thank you for supporting the organizations and brands that support Poppytalk. All opinions are our own.

July and August is blueberry season, and if you saw our instagram last week commenting on how delicious the blueberries were this year, let it be known, we weren't kidding. This year's crop is especially sweet and if you get a chance to pick up a pound or two, you might want to consider treating yourself to a bit more because whatever you thought you needed, you're no doubt going to be wanting more after you taste these.

In researching ideas for this post, we were impressed to see all the amazing recipes for blueberries (100+) on the BC Blueberry Council's website.  Fun fact: The BC Blueberry Council works closely with recipe developers and nutritionists to bring delicious, tested recipes to consumers, chefs and the food service industry as a whole. Cool recipes that we're dying to try, like Blueberry Cornmeal Bacon Waffles to a what looks like a very interesting Blueberry Watermelon, Cucumber and Feta Salad.  Check them all out here.

Which brings us to this recipe. We were well overdue for another tower cake, and the idea of making one with blueberries, we couldn't resist. We thought a naked version would show off the blueberries well and as a bonus, make for a romantic summer's night desert!  This particular version was made using 6 layers of sponge cake, whip cream and blueberries in between each, topped with a chocolate ganache, more blueberries, and a really nice fruit glaze to finish. The combination of the berries, cream and chocolate, will be a game changer. Plus, it's super easy to make!

INGREDIENTS

For the Cake
2 cups of blueberries
2 cups of whipping cream
6 layers of sponge cake

For the Chocolate Ganache

1 cup of heavy cream
8 oz. Belgium chocolate chips

For the Fruit Glaze
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup apple juice
2 Tbsp cornstarch
2 Tbsp corn syrup (optional)

How to Build

Starting with your first layer of sponge cake, top with a layer of whipped cream, and dot the surface of the freshly spread whipped cream with blueberries followed by the next layer of sponge cake. Repeat until all layers are complete.  Top with more whip cream and apply as well to the sides.  Using a long icing knife, slide the knife while touching the sides, pushing the icing so that you can still see the actual cake, but see whipped cream in the layer sections.  Let cool in the fridge while you make the ganache and glaze.

For the Chocolate Ganache
Heat the cream on the stove top until you see the cream coming to a simmer.  Remove off burner.  Add the chocolate and cover with a lid.  Wait five minutes.  Then with a whisk, start whisking from the center until well mixed.  It will turn into a velvety ganache. Leave for ten minutes before using. Note: The longer you leave the ganache sit, the thicker it will get, so time is of the essence.  Also if you stir it too much, it will lose it's sheen.

Take the cake out of the fridge and pour approximately 1/2 cup of the ganache on the top of the cake, spread until it starts to drip down the sides. Add more if needed, careful not to pour too much. Let cool in the fridge while you make the glaze.

For the Glaze
In a saucepan, mix the sugar and half of the apple juice and bring to a boil.  In a separate container mix 2 Tbsp of cornstarch with the remainder 1/2 cup apple juice. Add to the boiling juice and cook till thick. Stir in the corn syrup. Bring back to a boil and remove from heat. Let cool.

Mix approximately 2 Tbsps of the glaze with the remaining blueberries until all are covered but not drenched.

Top the cake with the berries, creating an attractive mound of blueberry goodness. Cool until ready to serve.  Enjoy!

A massive ball pit filled with 1 million plastic balls is heaven on earth

Inside the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C, Brooklyn-based studio Snarkitecture filled a 10,000-square foot space with 1 million plastic balls, creating what is probably heaven here on earth: an insanely huge ball pit.

Called ‘The BEACH’ the interactive installation features a seaside-like setting, complete with a ‘shoreline’ lined with beach chairs, umbrellas, a snack bar, and a pier for visitors to walk through. And instead of water, people wade through a sea of recyclable plastic balls! It’s basically a beach, but without sunburn and sharks.

According to the studio, the immersive installation ‘encourages exploration and interaction with one’s surroundings, and offers an unexpected and memorable landscape for visitors to relax and socialize within’. The BEACH will be on display until September 7.

Brand new car gets witty camouflage to keep it from being stolen

When one guy got himself a brand new car, he wanted it to be absolutely theft-proof. But rather than installing fancy security systems, he came up with a cheaper alternative: he covered it in rust.

Enlisting the help of UK-based vinyl wrap shop ‘Clyde Wraps’, the man covered his top-of-the-line 2014 Volkswagen T5 Sportline with full-body decals featuring rust stains and cracked fenders. The hideous façade would not only turn away would-be thieves, but also anyone looking to borrow his car. Genius!

‘It goes without saying the van stands out in a crowd and our customer had great pleasure in telling us later that it only took 3 days for the police to pull him over to ask what was going on with all the rust’, said Clyde Wraps.

Funny miniature scenes offer a delightful surprise every day of the year

Jimena Azpeitia

ya se que ya estan muy vistas, pero siempre que hay nuevas me divierte mucho verlas jaja

There are many artists that have dabbled with miniatures to create humorous scenes but ensuring he stays at the top of our lists Tatsuya Tanaka has created a ‘Miniature Calendar’. The project has been running since 2011 with the Japanese creative bringing a new pocket-sized scene to life every day.

His funny scenes depict all sorts of things, including climbing a giant donut ‘rock’ face, ironing out a creased post-it note and showering under a toothbrush jet. Now having made more than 1000 scenes, Tanaka never ceases to inspire us. He explains his project, saying: “The theme is ‘the interest of likening one thing to another’. In doing so, you can see how everyday things can become more fun when imagined in a different way”. Read the full interview with the artist on Design Boom.

Artist Jane Long Digitally Manipulates Black and White WWI-Era Photos Into Colorful Works of Fantasy

All Hands on Deck

All images provided by Jane Long Photography

Australian artist Jane Long transforms cracked and faded black and white photographs into colorful works of fantasy, giving the subjects a new, and entirely surreal context. The images she uses for her series, Dancing with Costica, were captured over a half century ago by Costică Acsinte a Romanian war photographer who documented WWI.

The glass-plate photographs by Costica capture the straight faces and intense eyes of the subjects taken long before smiling was common in images. “I wanted to change the context of the images,” says Long. “Photographic practices at the time meant people rarely smiled in photos but that doesn’t mean they didn’t laugh and love. I wanted to introduce that to the images.”

By altering the images Long imagines the subjects as characters, letting the audience decide whether they are bad or good. These colorful transformations have been a source of controversy as some viewers have felt it improper to alter images of those she doesn’t know. In response to these accusations the artist stands by her work and explains, “I wanted people to see these figures as real people, more than just an old photograph. Adding colour completely changes our perception of images.”

Long’s series Dancing with Costica will be exhibited from August 22nd to September 20th as part of the Ballarat International Photo Biennale. You can see more work by Long on her Facebook page here. (via My Modern Met)

Fascinating light photography exposes the motions of musicians and athletes

by Tilly Martin

Our fascination with motion is not a new one. And the human eye’s demand to see what we cannot is at the centre of many ongoing experiments. Canada-based photographer Stephen Orlando answers the questions that we never dreamed possible, giving us an insight into what music and movement actually looks like.

Exploring the movements of athletes and musicians, Orlando uses LED lights and long exposures to record even the slightest of motions, producing colourful waves of light. We can’t help but marvel at the stunning results.

He explains: “I’m fascinated with capturing motion through time and space into a single photograph. Using LED lights with custom colour patterns and long exposure photography, I’m able to tell the story of movement. This technique reveals beautiful light trails created by paths of familiar objects. These light trails have not been artificially created with Photoshop and represent the actual paths of the objects.”

Gigantic, sleeping rooftop street art pieces come to life in the air

by Tilly Martin

It’s hard to appreciate the giant street art projects of duo Ella & Pitr when you have your feet on the ground, but look from the air and the works come to life. The large-scale artworks scattered on roads, rooftops and empty car parks each tell their own story, depicting various sleeping characters. From the peaceful, innocent sleep of children to the exhausted student collapsing over books, and the relaxed sunbather to the huddled homeless man, the creative duo explore people from all walks of life, depicting a city brimming with very different personalities.

Reflections in New York: Stunning photographs capture multiple realities

by Tilly Martin

Traversing the streets of New York, photographer François Van Bastelaer captures double moments with the reflections of windows in cars and buildings.

Van Bastelaer presents the reality as something that is unusual, different and sometimes almost surrealist, showing us multiple worlds merged as one. The perfectly angled perspective documents a specific moment in time, whether it’s the fleeting glimpse in a shop window or a woman knelt over a table, appearing almost to hug the passing traffic.

Incredible long exposure photographs capture the dazzling lights of carnival rides

Bringing the colourful world of carnivals to film, photographer Roger Vail captures extraordinary long exposure shots of the rides at night. The bright glow of the rides against the dark sky casts a kaleidoscopic projection, looking eerily futuristic.

Vail explains: “There was no initial inspiration, just an experiment. I went to a carnival to shoot the facades. While there I decided to see what would happen if I made a time exposure of the Ferris wheel. First sight of the negative was thrilling so I decided to make more. Most of the fun was in not knowing what the end result would look like.” His work is currently on display at Joseph Bellows Gallery in California until 22nd August.

Can we talk about this felted cat bed. Made me smile.
