Great Job, Internet!: Bill Burr gives a profane but heartfelt tutorial on how to make a pie crust

by Joe Blevins

Bill Burr has been a battle-hardened, road-tested stand-up comic since the early 1990s, and he’s been hosting his own Monday Morning Podcast since 2007, but he may just have a backup career in case the comedy world experiences yet another one of its implosions. In a delightful 10-minute video posted to his personal YouTube account, Burr shows that he can indeed make a pie crust from scratch, thus fulfilling a promise he recently made on his podcast. Not that he’s bragging, please understand. Fairly early in in the proceedings, he claims that a 5-year-old could do this, too. But that 5-year-old would probably not turn the cooking demonstration into a rambling, profanity-studded monologue about food, relatives, the holidays, and the complexity of interpersonal relationships.

Burr may also be the least pretentious pop culture chef in history. He doesn’t know the actual names of the various sifters and ...

Newswire: Michael B. Jordan got knocked the fuck out, man (for Creed)

by Katie Rife

Sylvester Stallone is getting a lot of awards attention for his performance in Creed, but his co-star Michael B. Jordan also deserves recognition for all he went through filming the movie. Like, for example, taking a punch to the face from British pro boxer Tony Bellew on set:

That KO wasn’t an accident, either, as Jordan explained on The Bill Simmons Podcast last month. The script specifically required that Jordan’s character get hit in the face, and director Ryan Coogler wanted to do the shot in slow motion. So, as Jordan explains, “[In slow motion] you can see the misses, the space between the punches. So, all of a sudden, you just hear this snickering from the corner, and everybody’s like ‘What?’ And Sly’s like, ‘Man you gotta take it.’ I’m like, ‘What do you mean?’ He’s like, ‘No, you gotta take ...

The Nomad RoadTrip is a USB Car Charger and a Battery In One

by Alan Henry

USB car chargers are common, but less so are ones that keep charging your gear when the car is off, or that can double as an external battery pack. The Nomad RoadTrip is both: It’ll charge your phone while you drive, but it’ll also keep your phone juiced with its built in 3000mAh battery.

‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ Trailer: Laika Has Gone and Made a Stop-Motion Fantasy Adventure

by Jacob Hall

kubo and the two strings trailer

Laika, the animation studio known for quirky and visually stunning stop-motion animated movies like Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls, are back with their latest project, Kubo and the Two Strings. And like their previous work, which floated between genres and refused to pin the company down as the maker of a certain kind of movie, this one looks visually stunning and unlike anything else being sold to family audiences these days.

Watch the Kubo and the Two Strings trailer after the jump.

This is a teaser trailer in the strictest sense of the word. There’s no plot here, just 66 seconds of beautiful animation and evocative imagery. Kubo and the Two Strings seems to place in a fantasy landscape inspired by Japanese mythology and imagery and the result is the kind of thing you really don’t see in American animation. Unlike Kung Fu Panda, which borrowed from Asian culture as the foundation for a silly joke, Laika seems to be building something a little more serious and respectable.

And perhaps they can get away with making this kind of movie because of that cast they’ve assembled. Although the title character is voiced by the relatively unknown Art Parkinson (best known as Rickon Stark on Game of Thrones), the supporting cast includes George Takei, Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Rooney Mara and Ralph Fiennes. That’s an awful lot of white people for a movie so clearly set in Japan (George Takei is not the only Asian-American actor out there, people), but that’s a subject for a longer conversation. Sorry Laika: you make terrific movies, but we’ve got to call you out on this.

And while the trailer doesn’t supply anything in the way of plot, this plot synopsis sure does:

Clever, kindhearted Kubo (voiced by Art Parkinson of Game of Thrones) ekes out a humble living, telling stories to the people of his seaside town including Hosato (George Takei), Hashi (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) and Kamekichi (Academy Award nominee Brenda Vaccaro). But his relatively quiet existence is shattered when he accidentally summons a spirit from his past which storms down from the heavens to enforce an age-old vendetta. Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Academy Award winner Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey), and sets out on a thrilling quest to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known. With the help of his shamisen – a magical musical instrument – Kubo must battle gods and monsters, including the vengeful Moon King (Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes) and the evil twin Sisters (Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara) to unlock the secret of his legacy, reunite his family and fulfill his heroic destiny.

Kubo and the Two Strings opens on August 19, 2016. You can check out the first poster for the film below.

The Best Horror Movies of 2015

by Rob Hunter

Best Horror Movies of 2015

In a perfect world we’d have an annual holiday that lent itself somehow to the appreciation of horror films — just one day out of the year where people were encouraged to share their love for cinema of the scary, creepy, and gory kinds. A pipe dream, I know, so until that day comes we’ll have to settle for end of the year lists like this one to point people towards the best the genre has to offer.

Great horror films that only played festivals and have secured release dates for 2016 — The Invitation, Black Mountain Side, The Witch, Nina Forever — are ineligible for this list, but I am including fest titles that have yet to be so lucky (in the hopes that some smart distributor picks them up soon for release).

dashes

15. Goodnight Mommy

Twin boys suspect their mother, bandaged after a trip to the hospital, might not actually be their mother after all. This Austrian thriller is a three-person show (aside from a pair of pesky Red Cross volunteers), and it does a brilliant job of ratcheting up the suspense and toying with our allegiances as things turn deadly serious. [Available on Blu-ray/DVD] [My review]

dashes

14. The Interior

A man lost in life heads to the forest to find himself, but his journey brings unexpectedly nightmarish results. Writer/director Trevor Juras moves from an oddly comic first act into isolated days and nights of steadily increasing terror — including some of the creepiest tent-set scenes since The Blair Witch Project — that leaves viewers on edge and unsure if the threats are real or imagined. [Currently unavailable]

dashes

13. Deathgasm

A picked-upon headbanger accidentally summons a demon from hell in his search for acceptance, and soon he and his friends are fighting for the lives and souls of the entire town. Jason Lei Howden‘s heavy metal horror/comedy delivers laughs and bloodletting in equal measure alongside some of the best dildo action this side of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. [Available on Blu-ray/DVD] [My review]

dashes

12. Cub

An unstable preteen heads into the woods with his cub scout troop and discovers too late that the only badges available are for woodcarving and murder. Belgium isn’t the first place you think of for horror cinema, but this beautifully shot and scored thriller goes a long way towards changing that with dark themes, intense brutality, and a nightmare-fueled adrenaline. [Available on Blu-ray/DVD] [My review]

dashes

11. The Editor

Cast and crew working on a cheap but artistic slasher film begin dying for real at the gloved hands of a vicious murderer. Good horror/comedies are hard to get right, and great ones are even tougher, but this smart, wickedly creative, and loving homage from Astron-6 to Italian horror films of decades past succeeds in capturing its target’s spirit while telling an extremely funny and bloody tale of its own. [Available on Blu-ray/DVD] [My review]

dashes

10. We Are Still Here

A couple move into a rural home in the dead of winter and quickly discover ghostly squatters in the basement. Writer/director Ted Geoghegan‘s feature debut takes a familiar concept and an affection for certain genre classics and mixes them with an energetic narrative spin, a game cast, and the gory goods. [Available on Blu-ray/DVD] [My review]

dashes

9. Backcountry

A couple goes into the woods in the hopes of coming closer together, but what they find might just tear them apart. Animal attack films are commonplace, but the truly terrifying ones can be counted on one three-fingered hand — and Adam MacDonald‘s bear-centric nature thriller is that harrowing, intense, and gut-shredding middle finger. [Available on Blu-ray/DVD] [My review]

Yesterday, we reported production of James Franco‘s The Disaster Artist had begun. It has indeed with the actor/director posting a photo from the set to his Facebook page:

FrancoasTommyThe film chroniclesls the making of The Room, one of the most treasured of “so-bad-it’s-good” films. Besides directing, Franco plays The Room mastermind Tommy Wiseau with his brother Dave Franco playing Greg Sestero, a young Northern California actor who befriended Wiseau and ended up co-staring in the 2003 film. Sestero would go on to write about his experiences with Wiseau and making The Room in the 2013 book, The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room.

The Disaster Artist is expected for release sometime next year.

Ahead of UFC 194, relive the night Chris Weidman shocked the world

by MMAjunkie Staff
Corey

Never gets old.

Two-and-a-half years is a long time for a memory to remain, so it may be difficult to think back to just how shocking Chris Weidman’s UFC 162 win over Anderson Silva truly was. Take yourself back to that moment.

It was July 2013, and Weidman – like everyone else at the time – was an underdog heading into his meeting with “The Spider.” But Weidman brought with him an incredibly unwavering confidence, and nothing Silva could do inside the cage deterred that belief.

And so Weidman stood firm in the face of the man many consider the greatest ever, and he delivered a stunning second-round knockout to claim the UFC middleweight title.

At Saturday’s UFC 194 event, Weidman (13-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) faces Luke Rockhold (14-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) in hopes of securing his fourth consecutive defense of the belt. But in the calm before the storm, go back and and see how his title reign began.

And for the latest on UFC 194, stay tuned to the UFC Rumors section of the site.

This is up on a guy in my office's door.

Very true.

Ideally, we’d all earn what we deserve and our employers would give us raises according to our skill level, experience, and professional value—we’d never even have to ask. Of course, reality doesn’t usually work out that way. As author Chester Karrass has said: “You don’t get what you deserve. You get what you negotiate.”

‘Batman v Superman’ Trailer Breakdown: Every Little Geeky Detail You May Have Missed

by Jacob Hall

BvS 12

Last night, a new trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice arrived and the internet reacted accordingly. By exploding. Today, we have sorted through the rubble, sifted through ashes, and gone through the trailer frame-by-frame to explore what new revelations this new batch of footage brings to light.

So join us after the jump as we take a deep dive into that new trailer.

BvS 1

Ben Affleck‘s Bruce Wayne is older, wise, and slightly more grizzled than the rest of his cinematic counterparts. So while Christian Bale’s younger, flashier playboy billionaire drove a flash Lamborghini, Affleck is seen here driving a more classic automobile. This Batman drives on older vehicle that’s still cool and still working, despite the miles that have surely been put on it? We see what you did there, movie.

BvS 2

This exchange of dialogue between Henry Cavill‘s Clark Kent and another reporter suggests that Clark is still very new on the scene. He doesn’t even know who Bruce Wayne is yet, which suggests that he hasn’t been working at the Daily Planet for very long. In other words, not that much time has passed since the events of Man of Steel.

BvS 3

This trailer offers our first full and proper look at Affleck as Bruce Wayne and, well, he looks great. “Cool and confident charmer with a few tricks up his sleeve” is a part he was born to play. You’ve got to love his little “Oh, we’re talking about Batman now?” smirk.

BvS 4

Hey! It’s a Batarang! This take on Batman’s iconic weapon looks like the halfway point between the heavily stylized versions seen in the Tim Burton films and the literally-hand-cut-in-a-basement iterations in Christopher Nolan’s movies. In other words: just comic book-y enough, while grounded enough to sell the fact that Batman is just a guy with a budget and a lot of time to make gadgets.

BvS 5

Batman may not believe in killing his enemies, but he certainly believes in scarring them to leave a permanent message. That’s awfully rough (it’s hard to imagine many iterations of the character deliberate marking his foes like this), but it does drive home the point that this Batman isn’t messing around. He’s a tough, merciless guy. You know, the kind of guy who wouldn’t think twice about fighting an invincible alien.

BvS 6

Here’s a daytime look at that Superman statue, first glimpsed in the first teaser trailer from awhile back. It still seems a little weird that Metropolis would build such a huge monument to a guy whose mere presence is a reminder that half of the city was destroyed, but maybe it’ll make more sense in context. At the very least, couldn’t they have waited a few years? It took Philadelphia two movies and a few championships to give Rocky Balboa similar treatment and Rocky didn’t punch skyscrapers into dust.

BvS 7

Oh, boy. Here’s the most controversial part of a trailer that has already been dividing the internet: our first extended look at Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. With his hyperactive personality and long locks, he’s a far cry from any Lex Luthor we’ve seen before. To be quite frank, he seems, well, annoying. But that may be the point. This young, energy drink-addled snob is about as far from Bruce Wayne as you can get and you can understand any instant animosity they have for each other.

BvS 8

We saw her in the previous trailer, but here’s another good look at Academy Award winner Holly Hunter as Senator Finch, the congresswoman in charge of investigating Superman. She, uh, looks like Holly Hunter. Moving on!

BvS 9

Now here is a Batcave built by a guy who’s been doing this for awhile! Industrial and slick, it’s a far cry from the gothic vision of the Burton films and the ragtag operation from Nolan’s trilogy. Note Robin’s vandalized costume (as seen in a few trailers) on display to right. Also note the strange red room in the middle of the frame. Could that be an armory? A trophy room? Where’s the giant penny and the dinosaur?

BvS 10

We’ve known for awhile that Batman v Superman would revisit the climax of Man of Steel, showing the destruction of Metropolis from Bruce Wayne’s perspective. This trailer offers a fresh, ground-level look at the chaos, where a bunch of debris seems to be exploding at…Fart Street?

BvS 11

Here’s another big shot: an over-the-shoulder of Bruce Wayne watching Zod’s “World Engine” do its thing. Using the controversial climax of the previous film as motivation for Batman is a fascinating concept…if Zack Snyder and his team can pull it off. Making Batman the audience surrogate, the guy who is aghast at what Superman and Zod did to the city, is a ballsy move.

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Teaser Brings the Death and Decapitation and Destruction and Dragons and… Bran

by Jacob Hall

game of thrones season 6 teaser

When the fifth season of Game of Thrones concluded with a main character lying dead on the ground, countless fans took to social media to express their disgust, declaring that they would never watch the show again. The very next day, they all started counting down the days until the next season. This is the way of the Game of Thrones fan and they’ve been this way since poor Ned Stark had his head lobbed off back in season one.

The next season of HBO’s flagship series won’t begin airing until next year, so fans have to bundle up and survive the harsh winter if they want to feel the bloody warmth of Westeros again. But HBO knows your pain and from their high castle walls, they have thrown us, the peasants, a bone. Yes, it’s the first trailer for the new season. Praise the Seven!

Watch the first Game of Thrones season 6 teaser after the jump.

Anyone expecting new footage from the first Game of Thrones trailer obviously hasn’t been watching Game of Thrones for very long. HBO knows they have your full and undivided attention, so the first teaser is always just that – a tease. This one, while undeniably an effective piece of advertising that will keep the fans satiated for a day or so, consists entirely of footage from past seasons. However, the footage consists almost entirely violence and dragons and lingering shots of the deceased-but-not-really Jon Snow, so it’s still pretty cool. It does feature one new line of dialogue, courtesy of Isaac Hempstead-Wright‘s long-absent Bran Stark: “They have no idea what’s going to happen.”

That Bran line, while certainly from the show itself, is a firm poke in the fanboy ribs. After all, this season finds the show officially outpacing George R.R. Martin‘s novels, which means that everyone, show-watchers and book-readers alike, are setting out into uncharted waters. Sure, the book fans can lean on the elaborate theories they’ve constructed using evidence from the text, but they’re operating in the dark now. The days of people spoiling major events three seasons in advance are over!

Although much of the new season is cloaked in mystery, we do know that Ian McShane will be be joining the cast as a not-so-mysterious mystery character and that the legendary Max Von Sydow will be stepping in to play the Three-Eyed Raven, Bran’s mentor in the mystic arts.

Game of Thrones season 6 will premiere in April, but HBO has yet to reveal the exact date. In any case, we have our response to that announcement: not soon enough.

“No, I Got Paid.” Harrison Ford Demonstrates His Star Wars Injury On The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon

by Christine Marie
Corey

I feel like he is becoming a grumpy old man, and this was actually a fun interview.

It’s nice to see members of the cast being interviewed on different talk shows. Jimmy Fallon had Harrison Ford on his late-night show, which aired last night. I have to say, Harrison Ford seemed annoyed during the interviewed, but mostly incredibly sarcastic which was entertaining to watch.

The actor used a Han Solo doll to re-create his Star Wars injury.

Ford exclaimed:

“They closed the f-cking door on me!”

As you’ll see in the clip below, both Ford and Fallon laugh a lot at the mention of director J.J. Abrams name. Wonder what that’s all about?

When asked if he felt emotional reprising his role as Han Solo, Ford replied:

“No, I got paid.”
