This Star Wars: The Force Awakens GIF is Like Something Out of Monty Python

by Neil Miller
Star Wars: The Force Awakens new poster spoilers

LucasFilm

How do you suppose Harrison Ford would pronounce “GIF,” with a hard “J-iff” or a soft “G-iff” sound? These are questions to which my mind has wandered in the processing of this Star Wars: The Force Awakens GIF poster… thing.

It looks like something out of Monty Python, with all the charm and oddity of a Terry Gilliam animation in between sketches. This is exactly what I needed to further enrage my nerd boner over Star Wars: a way to connect it to Terry Gilliam.

Have a look for yourself and try to deny that this thing is giving off some serious Gilliam vibes:

A Collection of Funny Tweets About Exercise

by Lisa Marcus

One sees it every year on Thanksgiving. We might be driving to our dinner destination or hitting an after-dinner gathering, and behold, there they are: the runners. Out for a run before or after their carb-heavy, calorie-laden sugar fest.

Many concepts are prefaced by "there are two kinds of people in this world." This is one of them. There are the pre- or post-Thanksgiving dinner, guilt-filled exercisers, and there are the pre-dinner, pie-drooling people who, post meal, are the "relax with some couch love and TV embracement" crowd.

It's not hard to discern what types most of these people are who tweeted funny quips about exercise. See all of them here; it's worth a smile.

Pick the Real U.S. States

by Miss Cellania

This quiz from mental_floss is driving me nuts. It’s a simple concept: just recognize all the U.S. states by their names. Easy, huh? But the names are scattered among words that are not U.S. states. Some are cities, some are places in other countries, and some are just a bit mangled. And if you pick the wrong one, the quiz is over and you have to reload to try again. But the hardest thing about it is that you only have one minute to go through them all! If you read too fast, you’re liable to click on a wrong name. If you go too slow, time will run out. And you will have to stop and scroll a couple of times. The best I’ve gotten so far is 41 of them when time ran out. I hope you can beat that!

‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ Trailer: Doomsday Arrives

by Angie Han

Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice trailer

Not to be outdone by Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, 2016’s other big superhero vs. superhero movie has also hit Jimmy Kimmel Live to unveil new footage. Warner Bros. offered a little taste of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier this week with an intriguing, if puzzling, tease, and now the full-length trailer is here in all its grim, gritty glory.

Among other things, the latest Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer confirms one very persistent rumor and debunks another, and offers the first look at the three superheroes standing side-by-side (as seen above). Watch the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer after the jump.

Yup, that’s right: It turns out all the rumors about Doomsday were true. It also turns out the rumors about Warner Bros. having a strict “no jokes” policy for their DC universe were exaggerated. There’s a lot more humor here than we might have expected from a sequel to the endlessly dour Man of Steel, and Lex Luthor in particular seems to be kind of a jokester. But for my money, nothing beats that badass appearance by Wonder Woman.

The title Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice does a good job of explaining the plot all on its own — up to and including the inevitable third-act team-up that’ll pave the way for 2017 and 2019’s two-part Justice League. But in case you want a little more detail, here’s the official synopsis:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’ most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice arrives March 25, 2016Zack Snyder directed from a script by Chris Terrio and David GoyerBen Affleck stars as Batman, Henry Cavill returns as Superman, and Gal Gadot makes her debut as Wonder Woman. Jason Momoa is additionally expected to make a cameo as fellow Justice Leaguer Aquaman.

Also starring are Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Holly Hunter as Senator Finch, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, and Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth. Jena Malone and Scoot McNairy also appear in unspecified roles.

A Year-Long Road Trip Where the Temperature Is Always 70ºF

by John Farrier

As a professional climatologist, Brian Brettschneider thinks a lot about the weather. What does it mean to have "good weather"? One element, Brettschneider thinks, is a pleasant temperature of 70ºF.

If you'd like to spend an entire year at that temperature without making use of heating or air conditioning, then he's got the perfect road trip for you. On every day of this 9,125-mile journey, the average high is 70ºF. It takes you through 30 states of the contiguous United States.

Brettschneider also calculated another, much longer route that makes use of cool summer temperatures in Alaska and western Canada.

Drum Battle: Dave Grohl vs. Animal

by Miss Cellania
Corey

YEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSS!!!!

The ABC TV series The Muppets had a little drum battle over the credits of last night’s episode. Animal, who plays with the band Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, faced off against Dave Grohl, who sings with the Foo Fighters now but played drums with Nirvana.

(YouTube link)

Oh, it may have ended in a draw, but if you break it down, Animal gets points for being a Muppet. Of course, you could argue that Grohl should get points for being a Foo Fighter, which would sound utterly ridiculous outside the cultural context. -via Rolling Stone

United State of Pop 2015 (50 Shades of Pop)

by Miss Cellania
Corey

Love these every year.

DJ Earworm has released his annual remix that combines all the top hits of the previous year into one megamix. Most of his year-end remixes used the top 25 songs, but this one contains the top 50.

(YouTube link)

I was a little disappointed with DJ Earworm’s remix of 2014 that came out a year ago, but since he is limited to the source material for such a project, this one shows how 2015 was an improvement over the previous year in the songs that became hits.

“It’s a more eclectic mix than it was five years ago,” said DJ Earworm when explaining to Billboard how different the songs were in style and tempo. The mix takes megahits like The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face,” Major Lazer’s “Lean On,” Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk,” and Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” among many others from artists like Drake, Justin Bieber, Ellie Goulding, Wiz Khalifa, Rihanna, Fetty Wap and, of course, Adele. Taylor Swift has the most songs on the mix, which is no surprise as her album, 1989, was at or near the top of the charts all year.

12 Adult Film Stars in Mainstream Movies

by Madison

For better or for worse (I say for better), pornography is becoming more and more mainstream.  The taboo of adult films still exists, but it’s no longer uncommon for pornstars to transition away from the world of orifice violation and into the safer and somewhat mundane realm of mainstream media.  As an aside, I’ve omitted pornstars that appeared in Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Orgazmo, for the simple reason that it’s tough to consider an NC-17 movie as “mainstream.”  Anyhow, here’s a look at 12 adult film stars who ditched the San Fernando Valley for some time on the big

Mass Hysteria: Hi-C’s ‘Ghostbusters’ Drink Ecto-Cooler May Be Making a Comeback

by Ethan Anderton

Ecto Cooler Coming Back

If there’s one thing to be thankful for this weekend besides friends, family and that new Star Wars: The Force Awakens extended TV spot that arrived yesterday, it’s the potential return of one of the most wonderful drinks from the late 80s and early 90s.

Even for kids who were inexplicably not fans of Ghostbusters in the 90s, the Hi-C juice flavor Ecto-Cooler was a staple in lunchboxes and sleepovers, featuring Slimer on the box as the drink’s mascot. It was all the rage from when The Real Ghostbusters series started and lasted well past the cancellation of the animated series. But it’s been gone for years. However, there might be hope of a comeback as Coca-Cola just recently re-registered the trademark for Ecto-Cooler back in September.

Planet Ghostbusters (via io9) brought the trademark renewal to our attention, and here it is:

ectrocooler-trademark

Even though Slimer left the Ecto-Cooler box in 1997, the name Ecto-Cooler was discontinued until 2001 when it was renamed Shoutin’ Orange Tangergreen, though many store receipts kept the old name. In 2006 it was changed to Crazy Citrus Cooler and then a year after that it was gone completely, though a recipe began circulating online to recreate it thanks to the Ghostbusters Chicago Division.

It’s important to note that simply renewing a trademark doesn’t mean Coca-Cola has Ecto Cooler coming back for sure. They may just want to renew it so they don’t lose the rights to the name, leaving someone else to cash in on the nostalgia factor. But since there’s a Ghostbusters reboot arriving next summer (which may or may not include Slimer), and people love things from the past being brought back just for the hell of it, the return of Ecto-Cooler doesn’t seem impossible.

Also, let’s not forget that Coca-Cola recently brought back Surge due to popular demand, and since Ecto-Cooler probably has more people clamoring for that drink to make a comeback, I think it’s a no-brainer for this to happen. It might be strange to get excited about throwing more money at a multi-billion dollar corporation who loves to sell us overpriced sugar water, but this is America, so what do you expect?

The new Ghostbusters movie is slated to arrive on July 15th, 2016, and it would be nice to have an ice cold, refreshing Ecto-Cooler to sneak into the movie theater when we watch the movie or build that great new LEGO Ghostbusters firehouse coming next year.

Blonde Bonds and Batmobiles: 7 Times Fans Overreacted

by Jacob Hall
Corey

All good points. I have been guilty of this as well. However, since Heath Ledger as the Joker I have learned to not go too crazy before the movie comes out.

movie fan controversies

Fandom is a group of people united by a shared passion. They all love something enough to follow it, to memorize it, to criticize it, and to get genuinely angry when it lets them down. Fans tend to feel a smidgen of ownership over the movie or TV show or book series that has appropriated so much of their time. In other words, fans tend to overreact. A lot.

And can you blame them? After all, you surely know the feeling. You know what it’s like to watch from outside the bubble as something you love is put through the wringer by creatives who have no idea what the hell they’re doing. When you’re not in the room, when you don’t know the reasoning for a certain casting choice or a certain creative decision, it can be nerve-wracking. What are they doing to the thing that you love?

However, not ever knee-jerk fan reaction has been accurate. Movie fans have recoiled against some truly great ideas and they have recoiled against aspects of films that, in the end, simply didn’t matter. You may very well remember these movie fan controversies. You may have tried to do the wise thing and forget these controversies. As these examples show, sometimes movie fans are the absolute last people you actually want making decisions in the moviemaking process.

movie fan controversies

Black Leather Mutants

The Film: X-Men (2000)

The Controversy: The X-Men, the comic book team whose iconic outfits were defined by their color and variety, underwent a fashion makeover for their first big screen outing. Gone were the outrageous costumes that made these mutant superheroes look like Marvel’s most badass gay pride parade. In their place were a bunch of generic leather jumpsuits that made every hero look identical to one another. X-Men even featured a joke about whether or not Wolverine would prefer to wear yellow spandex, which feels like a deliberate jab in fandom’s eye.

What Happened: It turns out that regular folks, the people who actually decide whether or not a movie is a hit, didn’t care about what the X-Men wore. The black leather outfits have stuck around for the rest of the series so far and while fans may grumble in internet forums, each film has been a hit. Early images from the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse suggest that a few classic costumes may put in an appearance, but the fact that an alternate ending to The Wolverine where Hugh Jackman‘s near-invincible mutant receives his classic yellow costume was cut suggests that those at the helm of this franchise aren’t in a hurry to put theses characters in garish blue and yellow quite yet. It’s kind of amazing how quickly everyone just accepted that this is just what the X-Men wear now.

movie fan controversies

Beetlejuice as Batman?

The Film: Batman (1989)

The Controversy: The internet didn’t really exist in its current form when director Tim Burton cast Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne in Batman. So rather than complain on Twitter, fans had to make themselves known the old-fashioned way: they wrote 50,000 letters to Warner Bros., demanding that someone else be cast in the part. Batman co-creator Bob Kane, screenwriter Sam Hamm, and producer Michael E. Uslan were also skeptical, pushing back against Burton’s decision to cast his Beetlejuice collaborator as the Dark Knight.

What Happened: And then everyone actually saw Batman, saw how the film utilizes Keaton’s talents, and got over it real quick. Honestly, it makes sense that fandom would be nervous about this one. Prior to putting on the cape and cowl, Keaton was primarily known as a comedic actor. The thought of Mr. Mom protecting Gotham City from the Joker does sound laughable. With the benefit of hindsight, we now know that Keaton is a national treasure and one of the most reliable and versatile actors out there. Burton knew this before the fans did and acted accordingly.

Patton Oswalt To Join New Mystery Science Theater 3000

by Erik Amaya
Corey

Yeeeeees

pattonoswaltIn creator Joel Hodgson‘s most recent Kickstarter update, he revealed comedian Patton Oswalt will be the new evil henchman, the second half of “The Mads” to befuddle new host Jonah Ray with cheesy movies.

“You know, the funny thing is that when we launched our Kickstarter, I hadn’t even approached Patton about being on MST3K… but I had thought a lot about getting him involved,” wrote Hodgson. He initially planned to approach Oswalt as a “guest writer,” but began to envision him in the costume of TV’s Frank, the mad assistant played by Frank Conniff in seasons 2-6 of the original series. “I figured maybe he’d be Frank’s son, or at least a clone. But yeah: the idea of Patton wearing black lab assistant’s garb, with a big mound of silver hair and a spitcurl…? It was just really funny to me, in a visual / cross-referential / meta kind of way.”

The comedian enthusiastically agreed to the idea and suggested the character be called “TV’s Son of TV’s Frank.”

As with Ray, comedians Baron Vaughn and Hampton Yont, and new mad scientist Felicia Day, Oswalt will not be confirmed until the Kickstater ends and Hodgson knows how many episodes he’ll actually make. With an end goal of twelve episodes, the campaign is currently a little under $100,000 short of making six episodes possible.

VOTD: Relive the Year in Movies with a 2015 Salute to Cinema

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

Love these. Looks like the year is ending.

2015 Movies Retrospective

We’re still one day away from December, which seems a little early to start looking back at the previous year. But since we already have a grasp on all the movies that will hit before 2015 comes to an end, why not relive the year in movies?

Editor Ben Zuk put together the 2015 Salute to Cinema comprised of movies ranging from blockbusters such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Mad Max: Fury Road to indies like Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, dramas such as Steve Jobs and even movies that we shouldn’t think about too often, like Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and Pixels.

Here’s the first 2015 movies retrospective video (via Audiovisualcy):

I always love seeing how editors choose to connect the movies from each year with these little retrospective videos. Of course, Ben Zuk is likely missing some movies in this look back since he only has 164 movies included, but it’s still very inclusive. Here’s what he had to say about his creation:

With one month to go, 2015 is pretty much over and I suppose it’s never too early to start looking back and trying to make sense of it all. I tried to tell a story about the movies of 2015, wanting to acknowledge some of the changes we’ve seen. I got 164 movies in. I’m certain I’ve forgotten someone’s favorite, but I hope I got close. Happy Holidays and I hope you enjoy the video.

We’ll likely have a few more of these hit before the end of the year, and we can’t wait to see what some of the other editors come up with for their look back at all the movies of 2015.

‘The Walking Dead’ is All About That Negan in a New Teaser Clip

by Jacob Hall
Corey

This got cut off of my DVR last night. Glad it is here. Negan is a bad bad man.

the walking dead negan

Last night’s The Walking Dead midseason finale was, in typical The Walking Dead fashion, a big ol’ shrug to an otherwise fairly strong batch of episodes. Loyal viewers of the show should be familiar with this by now – no series on television manages to feature so many peaks and valleys in such close proximity.

It’s telling that the most interesting aspect of the episode wasn’t even a proper part of the episode, but rather a “prologue” for the second half of the season, which will air early next year. This brief clip, presumably from an upcoming episode, features the first onscreen mention of the Negan, the villain who will loom over the second half of season 6, make his grand debut in the finale, and then become a regular character in season 7. You can check out the Walking Dead Negan clip for yourself after the jump.

The brief snippet of footage finds Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), Daryl (Norman Reedus), and Sasha (Sonequa Martin) stopped by a roadblock comprised entirely of unsavory types on motorcycles. With no way to escape, they step out of their vehicle and are informed that everything they own, from the weapons in their hands to the napkins in their glove compartment, now belongs to Negan.

Fans of the Walking Dead comic already know who Negan is. Fans of the television adaptation probably know that the wonderful Jeffrey Dean Morgan has been cast in the role. This character is a nasty piece of work (he makes the Governor look gentle) and it’s likely that the rest of the season will treat him as a big mystery before revealing him in the season finale. If you don’t want to know anymore, feel free to stop reading right here – we’ll disclose a few minor details below that shouldn’t hinder your enjoyment of the show, but you know your personal spoiler tolerance better than we do.

Still with us? Okay. Negan is essentially the anti-Rick. As the leader of a band of survivors known as The Saviors, he’s essentially a post-apocalyptic crime lord. He marches in, demands supplies and food as a “protection” fee, and kills anyone who opposes him. He wields a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire (which he has named “Lucille”) and he’s not afraid to use it.

The timing of Negan’s arrival is both the comics and the show is no accident. By this point, our heroes have gotten so good at killing zombies that they’re just another element in the world. The walking dead are no longer the focus of The Walking Dead – they’re just a thing that exists now and everyone has learned to deal with it. From this point on, as civilization begins the process of even thinking about rebuilding itself, the main conflict will be human versus human in a world that just so happens to be filled with flesh-eating corpses.

The back half of The Walking Dead season 6 will begin airing on AMC on February 14, 2016.

‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Trailer: If You Could Go Back in Time, Would You Kill Baby Vandal Savage?

by Jacob Hall

legends of tomorrow trailer

While the burgeoning DC movie universe will officially attempt to win the hearts of minds of audiences all over the world with 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, the DC television universe has already moved past its “safe and comfortable” phase and into its “totally batshit can you believe this exists” phase. When Arrow premiered back in 2012, no one imagined that The CW would soon house its own bonkers comic book universe that would win over nerds and norms alike. But here we are – just as The Flash was officially establishing itself as the geekiest show on television, Legends of Tomorrow is here to dethrone it.

Set in the already jam-packed Arrow/Flash universe, Legends of Tomorrow borrows recurring heroes and villains from those two series, introduces a lot more, and sends everyone on a time traveling adventure to take down the immortal DC comics baddie Vandal Savage. It looks insane. And very fun.

Watch the new and totally crazy Legends of Tomorrow trailer after the jump.

In addition to its DC comics roots, this trailer contains shades of Star Trek, Doctor Who, and Quantum Leap. It’s just a whole bunch of insane concepts you love, stuffed into a single glossy package. If the first trailer had our curiosity, this one has our attention.

That this show exists at all is fascinating. Here is a relatively expensive-looking show on a relatively major network that features a superhero line-up consisting of the Atom, White Canary, Firestorm, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Captain Cold, and Heatwave. How did this happen? Who approved it? Let us know so we can thank them.

The set-up for this series is simple enough: time traveler Rip Hunter recruits a team of heroes and anti-heroes from the present day to help battle the villainous Vandal Savage, who has literally taken over the entire world in 2166. And since he’s an ancient, undying menace who has lived for eons, the team must jaunt through time to attack him when he’s weakest (this trailer suggests that the pilot will mostly take place in 1975). It’s the “Would you kill baby Hitler?” question that has been plaguing the internet as of late with a superhero twist.

Created by Greg BerlantiAndrew Kreisberg, and Marc Guggenheim, Legends of Tomorrow looks to do what Arrow and The Flash did so very well: make a mountain of pebbles. Denied the use of major DC comic book superheroes like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, these shows transformed their weaknesses into strengths, taking the B and C-level characters that were available to them and making them sing. Here is a fully realized DC universe that functions without the big guys. Somehow, it works.

Of course, this trailer does feature a line that should be of incredible interest for DC aficionados:

I’ve seen men of steel die and dark knights fall.

While we probably won’t be seeing Batman and Superman on the small screen anytime soon, little references like this make the CW’s DC universe feel like the part of something much bigger. If the movies are the “main” continuity, than these shows are Earth 2, an alternate dimension where the likes Atom and Captain Cold can be the center of attention. That’s just plain spiffy.

Legends of Tomorrow will premiere on January 21, 2016 on The CW.

Black Friday Preview from Obvious Plant

by Miss Cellania

Jeff Wysaski created a mockup Black Friday circular and posted it at some poor Target store. The items offered are obviously fake if you take a minute to think about them: a tent with an angry possum in it? A free falcon with a $75 order? You have to look closely to catch all the jokes.

But then there are these “exclusive Star Wars toys.” Who wouldn’t want a C-3P Fro? Or an Episode VII hot dog blaster? Personally, I want the Luke Skymopper. See several more pages of these at Obvious Plant.
