Back Side Of Classic Album Cover Art Is Finally Revealed

by Zeon Santos

Classic album art is the one thing sorely missing from this world of mp3 downloads and digital music. The large, colorful artworks from such famous artists as Roger Dean, Hipgnosis, H.R. Giger and Andy Warhol, just to name a few, were an enjoyable bonus to the audible delights that awaited listeners in-between the grooves.

But what did the back side of classic album covers look like? Generally they had very little to do with the front, choosing to contain the track listings instead, but Flickr user Harvezt wasn't content with only seeing half the scene, so they used their formidable illustrative skills to finally reveal the back sides of classic album covers in a series called "The Dark Side of the Covers".

How Many Bad Movies Have You Seen?

by Miss Cellania

The other day we asked how many classic movies you’ve seen from a list of 200 at Buzzfeed. Now there’s another list of 170 movies that most folks consider pretty bad. How many have you seen? There are a few on the list that I’ve only seen because I posted an article about them. Some are so comically bad that we watch them as comedies, even though that wasn’t the original intent, as any MST3K fan will tell you. The only one that made me walk out of a theater was Howard the Duck, although I have fallen asleep in a theater during a few (Zardoz comes to mind). I’ve managed to avoid most of the newer ones. Eddie Deezen expressed surprise that he was only in one of them. And there is probably a movie or two in here that you loved, even if others didn’t. -via Eddie Deezen

Watch the Hilarious Story of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Scrapped ‘Predator’ Role

by Russ Fischer

jean claude van damme predator

You may know that Jean-Claude Van Damme originally had a faceless but significant part in John McTiernan‘s Predator. Specifically, he was going to be the guy in the Predator suit, back before the alien design we all know and love was totally finalized. In fact, Van Damme spent a couple days running around doing tests in a lobster-like costume and feeling pretty pissed-off about the fact that his martial arts skills were going to waste. The costume didn’t work, and eventually it was scrapped for a different design, worn by the much larger actor Kevin Peter Hall.

Stan Winston’s son recently had effects guy Steve Johnson (Ghostbusters, Species, Blade 2) as a guest on the inaugural episode of The Monster Show. Therein, Johnson told the story of the original Predator design and Van Damme’s involvement. It isn’t the most kind retelling of the story, but elapsed decades erase the need to maintain decorum. The story is so weird you’ll probably think it is a joke. You must watch the video below.

Here’s the Predator story, via Stan Winston School and our friend J. Christopher Arrison. It. Is. Incredible.

Here’s the full show, which features a lot of detail about films like Ghostbusters, American Werewolf in London, and The Abyss. It takes a little while to get going, and the structure of the show is pretty raw, but when the stories start flowing you’ll hear some really wonderful stuff.

MST3K Fans… This One Has It All

by Dan Wickline

Topless Robot found utter gold if you are an MST3K fan… like me.

Artist Steve Seck did a marathon viewing of the classic cable show from the pilot Green Slime to the finale Diabolik and put together a Where’s Waldo style poster with a character from each episode. He entitled it Where’s Servo and took it to MOCCA where it sold out. Now he’s offering it up again for pre-order as he puts together a second printing. Now with purchase you get a key so you can find all your favorites… but that’s cheating.

Now… help me find Rowsdower.

Chances are if you’ve been given your own solo art show at LA’s Hero Complex Gallery, you’re pretty damn good, and that’s certainly the case with Craig Drake. ‘Bon Appétit’ Made An Inventory Of All The Food Chunk Eats Or Talks About In ‘The Goonies’

by Penn Collins

Bon Appétit, in their fervent pursuit of food and truths about food, assigned a writer to discuss everything that the portly character Chunk ate or spoke of eating in his time onscreen during The Goonies.

Why? I don’t know. Bon Appetit probably has an office full of food journalists, and sitting around waiting for food to make headlines could be pretty frustrating, so maybe they have to put together their own stories. The story can be found right here, and below I’ve listed a few interesting aspects about the piece/premise of the article:

  • The writer had never seen The Goonies before this assignment, which is surprising, until you see that her name is Rochelle, at which time you come to the realization that you don’t expect people named Rochelle to have the same life experiences us regular folk have.
  • The piece contains prose like this in discussing the Truffle Shuffle: “There are neither ganache-covered chocolates nor foraged fungi; the only shuffling is of Chunk’s ample belly.” The only shuffling is of Chunk’s ample belly. And that thought is preceded by a semicolon. This writer clearly doesn’t want to be a web writer for much longer. I bet Rochelle does her first drafts with ink and quill.
  • I don’t know what I was expecting, but after clicking the tag “truffle shuffle,” I was a little disappointed that there weren’t any other Bon Appetit articles with that tag. I would have been happy with just some Truffle Shuffle steak fries or Truffle Shuffle vinaigrette.
  • If these quotes and my memory are to be trusted, Chunk, in his ramblings about ice cream, brings up grape. Grape ice cream. And then apple. Where the hell is this kid getting cravings for grape and apple ice cream?
  • Chunk’s mom greets him after his rescue with Domino’s pizza, “his favorite.” Even if they managed to go on a pirate adventure and singlehandedly save the community from Troy’s dipshit dad, they’re still kids. And kids don’t know the first thing about good food.
  • The writer, the lovely Rochelle, ate during her screening of the film: “Two glasses of rosé, half a kabocha squash, an entire head of kale (I am not ashamed), and a handful of pecans.” First of all, this means that not only could Rochelle and I never get married, but probably never even be friends. Not because of her taste in food (which seems like the diet of a wealthy rabbit), but because she’s the type of person that makes eating a head of kale seem like a transgression that requires explaining. “Ugh. I had two rice cakes today. I’m such a cow.” I bet in job interviews, she lists her biggest weakness as being a “bit of a perfectionist.” Also, if you’re conveying what you’ve eaten today, and you list a “handful” of anything, I won’t like you ever again.

This list does beg the question of how you you follow up such a great character with his (supposed) re-appearance in a (supposed) sequel. The real Chunk is skinny these days (see?) So maybe they have to give him some other fun indulgence, like sex addiction, bulimia, or cutting.

I think America, in an effort to shed its reputation for unbridled decadence, would clamor to see a former child actor cut himself onscreen just so he can feel like he’s in control of SOMETHING.

Nah. Give him a big blueberry milkshake to spill on his skinny little head. You’re out of blueberry ice cream? Ok. Just give him some grape.

Two ‘Neighbors’ Red-Band Trailers: “We’re Just Getting Started”

by Angie Han

Neighbors red-band trailers

In real life, Seth Rogen and Zac Efron are separated by a mere five years in age. But even a few years can make a big difference in early adulthood, and in Neighbors, their lives couldn’t be further apart. Mac (Rogen) is a (relatively) responsible father and husband, while Teddy (Efron) is a hard-partying frat boy.

Unfortunately for both parties, they’re stuck living next door to one another. While they make efforts to get along early on, tensions soon escalate into all-out intergenerational war, and it turns out that the one thing both sides have in common is a willingness to fight dirty. Watch not one but two Neighbors red-band trailers — one for the international market and one for the domestic one — after the jump.

Universal posted both of the videos below on YouTube.

Some films disappoint by overselling how rude or raunchy they really are. But based on the reviews out of SXSW, Neighbors isn’t one of those. Variety called it “lewder, weirder, louder, leaner, meaner and more winningly stupid” than anything else on Stoller or Rogen’s resumes, while HitFix raved that it was “uproariously funny and almost breathtakingly dirty.”

Nor is Neighbors one of those movies that seems content to just coast by on shock factor. The Playlist was taken with what it called “some of the most elaborately choreographed and beautifully photographed party sequences we’ve ever seen in a mainstream studio comedy.” Badass Digest loved that it had “an amazing amount of heart.”

All of that may help explain how Neighbors has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes at the moment. Granted, that’s with just eleven reviews in. And if the movie is even half as outrageous as the trailers promise it is, that figure is bound to dip soon. But it’s still a great start.

Neighbors opens May 9Rose Byrne and Dave Franco round out the cast — she as Rogen’s wife, he as Efron’s second-in-command.

‘Intramural’ Trailer: A Bunch of SNL-ers Made a Sports Movie

by Angie Han

Intramural

The Saturday Night Live stars are the last people you’d expect to see in an inspirational sports drama, but they’re the perfect folks to send up the inspirational sports drama subgenre. Kate McKinnon, Jay Pharoah, and Beck Bennett all make appearances in the first Intramural trailer, which, as the title suggests, takes on the world of intramural college sports.

The video plays like a sort of indie Dodgeball, down to a shot of a cranky, violent dude in a wheelchair barking orders at his scrappy team. Watch the new Intramural trailer after the jump.

Directed by Andrew DisneyIntramural stars Jake Lacy (Pete from The Office) as a fifth-year college student who gets involved in intramural sports. (Presumably the detail about it being his fifth year is there to explain why Lacy looks so old, but he — and pretty much everyone else in this cast — still looks closer to 30 than 23.)

However, his new attempt to play flag football comes with some old history. Four years ago, as a bright-eyed freshman, he and his team went all the way to the finals before a disastrous event led to his swearing off the sport forever. Now, as he tries to bring the guys back together, he’s got some old fears to face and scores to settle.

Intramural will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month. There’s no official word yet on more general release plans, but our money’s on it hitting VOD later this year. Nikki ReedD.C. Pierson, and Michael Hogan (Tigh from Battlestar Galactica, of all people) also star.

Intramural is a hilarious send-up of inspirational sports movies replete with epic training montages, over the top motivational speeches and bone crunching tackles, “Intramural” tells an epic tale of a group of 5th year seniors who form an intramural football team in their final year of college before being forced out into the real world. “Intramural” is the GLORIOUS love child of cult classics such as “Wet Hot American Summer” and “Dodgeball”.

VOTD: The Evolution Of Movies From 1878 to 2014 In Just 3 Minutes

by Peter Sciretta
Corey

Absolutely phenomenal.

The Evolution of Movies and Film

/Film reader and Humber College graduate Scott Ewing put together the ultimate epic movie compilation, a chronological look at the evolution of movies, from Eadweard J. Muybridge in 1878 to the upcoming films of 2014. This is what Ewing says about the video montage:

This montage began as a labor of love and quickly became an obsession of mine. Many days and hours were spent researching clips, downloading and editing. The following montage chronicles the evolution of film from its conception in 1878 by Edward J. Muybridge to the Lumiere brothers in 1895. Georges Melies a trip to the moon in 1902 was a total game changer and from there we go to the first theatrical releases starting in 1920-2014 … this portion of the montage is chronological.

LOL: Jon Stewart Skewers ‘Noah’ Haters on ‘The Daily Show’

by Angie Han

Jon Stewart Noah

Even before it opened, Noah was raising the ire of moviegoers who felt that Darren Aronofsky‘s take on the classic Bible story wasn’t “literal” enough. The controversy hasn’t died down now that the movie’s actually hit theaters, and last night on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart took a moment to fire back.

With his trademark wit, the host skewered those who complained that Noah wasn’t a documentary and didn’t have enough God in it. But best of all is when he takes on the Fox commentator who remembered the original as a story in which “the sun comes out and everybody lives happily ever after.” “Everybody?” Stewart responds with mock shock. “Nobody lives!” Watch him rip the haters a new one after the jump.

Comedy Central posted the clip on their website.

Jon Stewart Noah Critics Video

Most of these people’s problems with Noah can be boiled down to either a misunderstanding of the film, a misunderstanding of the original Biblical text, or both. But in fairness, Stewart seems to do some misunderstanding himself here.

Kevin McCarthy, the critic shown in the segment saying that Noah is “not a documentary,” responded to Stewart’s segment during an appearance on Fox’s Washington, D.C. affiliate.

The strange part of what’s going on there — it’s a compliation of people basically hating on Noah. They’re calling it “Haters of the Lost Ark.” I loved Noah! I thought it was a great film. What I was talking about is the idea of artistic liberties. The filmmaker clearly took a 15-minute story in the Bible and made a two-hour-and-fifteen-minute film, so I used the term ‘it’s not a documentary.’ We’re not watching some literal translation of what’s going on. So clearly, it’s very out of context.

But McCarthy doesn’t sound too upset about it. “I’m honored to be made fun of on that show,” he laughed. McCarthy does have some support within the religious community for his pro-Noah view. Speaker Phil Cooke put together an entire featurette last month of quotes from various Christian leaders praising the movie and urging people to see it.

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’: Nightcrawler and Gambit to Appear

by Angie Han

X-Men Age of Apocalypse

X-Men: Days of Future Past doesn’t open for another few weeks, and its sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse, isn’t coming for another two years. Nevertheless, inquiring minds already want to know what Bryan Singer has planned for us in 2016, and the director is more than happy to deliver.

In a new interview, Singer and producer/writer Simon Kinberg revealed some new details about the film, including its relationship to the source material, its connection to X-Men: Days of Future Past, and which other mutants we might see. (Hint: Mystique won’t be the only blue one around these parts anymore). Hit the jump for more info.

Singer and Kinberg opened up in a chat with EW. Specifics about the X-Men: Apocalypse storyline are still scarce, but Singer teased that it would be “somewhat” based on the classic Age of Apocalypse comic book arc from the ’90s. “[The movie] won’t necessarily create an alternate universe, but there may be some swapping things that I’m playing with,” said Singer.

Although X-Men: Apocalypse follows X-Men: Days of Future Past, Singer suggests that the link between the two films won’t be too direct.

You won’t feel at the end of the movie that it set up Apocalypse. What it does is it sets up possibilities. But what we’ll discover in Apocalypse is that events in this movie made that happen… Apocalypse deals with ancient mutancy. What would humans have thought mutants were? What would mutants think humans were? You’re dealing with gods and things like that. And what if one survived and what if that found its way into our world?

Meanwhile, Kinberg emphasized the grand scale of the film. “From a visual standpoint it actually may be a bigger movie than Days of Future Past because there’ll be disaster movie imagery, like the title would imply,” he said.

What X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Days of Future Past will have in common are their leads, including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult. But we can look forward to seeing some other faces as well, including Gambit and Nightcrawler. “I’m excited because I want to start introducing familiar characters at different ages and also explore the ‘80s,” said Singer.

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens May 23, and X-Men: Apocalypse arrives May 27, 2016.

’22 Jump Street’ Red-Band Trailer: Spring Break, Motherf*ckers

by Angie Han

22 Jump Street Set

Most directors are lucky to have one smash hit in a given year. Phil Lord and Chris Miller are about to have two. Fresh off of the success of The Lego Movie, Lord and Miller are releasing 22 Jump Street, once again starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as a mismatched pair of undercover cops.

21 Jump Street was one of the funniest studio comedies in recent memory, and if the new 22 Jump Street red-band trailer is anything to go by, these guys haven’t lost their touch. This time around, Schmidt and Jenko pass as college students and head down to spring break — all in the name of catching baddies, of course. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Sony posted the video on YouTube. It’s not that rough as red-band trailers go, but it does contain some NSFW language.

Normally, a sequel to a comedic reboot of a half-forgotten ’80s show wouldn’t seem like anything to get excited about. But as we’ve noted many times before, Lord and Miller seem to excel at turning bad-on-paper ideas into cinematic gold. (Though even they didn’t want to touch Ghostbusters 3, apparently.) 22 Jump Street might not be as surprising as 21 Jump Street was, but it looks every bit as funny.

22 Jump Street opens June 13.

After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) when they go deep undercover at a local college. But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team, and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to question their partnership. Now they don’t have to just crack the case – they have to figure out if they can have a mature relationship. If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them.

Cool Stuff: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Bruce Lee, Aliens, and More by Craig Drake

by Germain Lussier

Craig Drake Die Hard

Most of you probably didn’t notice, but I took the day off last Friday. Why? Because I was so excited by the artwork of Craig Drake.

Drake’s work should be recognizable to most. He’s got a very distinctive, technical approach that blurs the line between minimal and expressive, with a heavy dash of graphic ’80s style. He places iconic images on a simple, flat background, and makes them explode off the wall. He’s had posters at Mondo, Bottleneck, Ltd. Art and others, but this week marked his first solo show. And as is the case with any artist finally given their own exhibit, he wanted to do something amazing. He succeeded.

Drake’s show, which is on display the Hero Complex Gallery in Los Angeles, turns his trademark style up to eleven. Not only is he tackling a ton of popular pop culture properties (Star Wars, Die Hard, Aliens, Cowboy Bebop, Lord of the Rings, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Escape from New York and others), he’s doing so with a newly found depth and passion. Each piece is better and more detailed than the last. Plus, Drake took many of the pieces and blew them up double the size of a normal poster. These “Mega Metals” make the whole show feel like an interactive experience.

Below, we’ve got images of all the art in Craig Drake’s show, which is on display through April 27.

Here are the posters from Craig Drake’s show. I’ve described each one in the file name, so mouse over for more info. Some are on metal, others are on wood and others are just screenprints. And while many of the posters (or at least versions of them) sold out over the weekend, there are still some available on the Hero Complex’s website.

‘Tucker & Dale vs. Evil 2′ Announced By Alan Tudyk, Tyler Labine (Video)

by The Movie God
Corey

I liked the first one. I kind of wanted to like it more, but it was fun.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

If you haven't seen Tucker & Dale vs. Evil yet, you're missing out on an extremely entertaining horror-comedy with plenty of big laughs and all the ooey-gooey carnage you'd expect from a slasher flick (watch the trailer here). The indie movie never really had a chance to shine for worldwide audiences on the biggest stage, but enjoys a faithful cult following thanks to home video, streaming services like Netflix (where you can still watch it right now; go on then!), and on demand.

It's been four years now since the movie was first released, and while fans have surely asked about a sequel, not much has come of it. Not until now. At a recent horror convention, stars Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine were talking about the movie when they announced that producers want to make Tucker & Dale vs. Evil 2.
