DVD Review: Antonioni’s Le Amiche is an early gem that scarcely resembles his later ones

by Mike D'Angelo

When a director settles on a unique vision of the world and then sticks to it forever after, early movies that don’t reflect that vision sometimes wind up forgotten or undervalued. Too Late Blues, starring Bobby Darin as a jazz musician, ranks with John Cassavetes’ best work; it rarely gets mentioned, though, because it doesn’t fit what we now think of as the Cassavetes template. Likewise, discussions of Bresson rarely focus on the superb Les Dames Du Bois De Boulogne, an early film he shot using professional actors rather than the blank “models” he’d later favor. To their ever vigilant credit, Criterion released Dames on DVD (though they have yet to upgrade it to Blu-ray), and next week, in a similarly perspicacious move, they’re adding Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1955 feature Le Amiche to the collection, even though Antonioni doesn’t truly become “Antonioni” until L’Avventura ...

Music Review: After 6 years away, Holy Fuck returns more sinister but no less curious

by Kevin Warwick

When Toronto’s Holy Fuck released its self-titled debut in 2005 and its 2007 follow-up LP, it almost seemed like it was cleverly trolling (and exploiting) the hot-shit, very bloated dance-punk scene of the time. Similar to their more math-y brethren in Battles, head honchos Brian Borcherdt and Graham Walsh orchestrated an artful sound of electronic-rock with Holy Fuck, one that bristles with celestial noise and is laid out to feature a gauntlet of side entrances to jogging grooves. But the product was danceable and just cohesive enough to warrant inclusion on bills with totally uncomplicated bands of that era like, say, The Faint—which in turn probably compelled entire audiences looking on to collectively furrow their brows and cock their heads in bewilderment.

Following 2010’s solid Latin, however, Holy Fuck flickered out. The band didn’t break up, really—it seemed to just not be around anymore, similar ...

Newswire: USA orders Ryan Philippe’s Shooter show to series

by William Hughes

USA has pulled the trigger (sorry) on Shooter, the TV adaptation of a sort-of-remembered 2007 Mark Wahlberg military thriller. (No, not the one with Dennis Quaid and the multiple perspectives; that one was Vantage Point. Common mistake.) In any case, the network where characters are welcome is welcoming gun-hugging hero man Bobby Lee Swagger (a.k.a. Ryan Phillippe) into its ranks, having picked the show up to series.

Now, if it was us, we’d take advantage of the fact that no one remembers our show’s source material to go crazy, maybe throw in some space aliens or puppet romance or something. But it sounds like USA will be going with a plot that at least sounds like something that would happen in a show called Shooter, with Phillippe playing an “expert marksman living in exile who is coaxed back into action after learning of a plot to ...

Emily Blunt Explains Why The Female Shortlist For Action Movies Always Looks So Familiar

by Vivian Kane

Emily Blunt has been making the TIFF press rounds, talking about her new movie Sicaro, and in doing so, has been dropping tiny gender-based truthbombs all over Toronto. She gave a fantastic interview to Indiewire (which you should definitely read in full) where she talks at length about the weird implications of the "strong female role," and how strength as a descriptor for women doesn't usually mean strength of character, but strength of her fist in someone's face.

I have a complicated and mixed reaction being anointed action heroine, because I also feel that it's not quite right to associate toughness with wielding a gun in two pictures, which has sort of happened now, that's sort of the reaction. I don't think Josh [Brolin] and Benicio [Del Toro] are being told, "wow, you play such a strong role." The definition of strength to me is something that I'm interested in hearing, why people seem to think that gun-wielding and punching a guy is super-strong. I guess because we just don't see it in films, I think that's why there's the reaction to it.

Blunt also took the opportunity to crush the hopes of anyone who was hoping she might be attached to the upcoming Captain Marvel movie by saying straight up she hasn't heard anything about it. But she does think it's interesting and indicative of larger trends that people keep bringing up her name. Because her name, along with a few other women, are the names that always come up for these roles. And if you've ever wondered why the action heroine shortlist always seems so familiar, it's because it is.

I think it's because the list is very short, because we don't see women in these kind of roles. So I think as soon as you do a role like that, like Charlize did or I did, or Rebecca's done -- there's like four of us or something. And Jen Lawrence. So I feel like us four, we get talked about -- and Angie, Angelina. So it's a list of like, four women who are going to be considered for those kind of roles. So I think that's why the rumors happen, because they're like, "who else? Surely not another girl can wield a gun," you know what I mean? "A woman doing push-ups? There's only one who can do that."

So do we think it's any coincidence that Rachel McAdams was confirmed today as being cast in the Doctor Strange movie? We don't know what her role will be yet, but it wouldn't be surprising to hear she's been added to the list of Women Who Can Be Marketable As Actiony now that she's played with knives and stuff on True Detective. She may not have done major stunts, but she at least proved she could grow her roots out, put on some tight jeans, and be seen as both tough AND impossibly beautiful-- the perfect intersection of the female action Venn diagram. It's definitely a weird catch-22 that major studios don't think a woman can be believably sold as an action star until she already IS one. Add to that the fact that by the rules these studios have set up, the woman in question has to be youngish, gorgeous, usually white, and already a big enough box office draw, and it's no surprise that there are only five women on that list.

Thom Yorke grava banda sonora com 18 dias de duração

by Mariana Monteiro

Hunger Games, Mad Men studio partners with Telltale

Mad Men 1

Film and telly producers Lionsgate announce that they've made "significant investment" in Telltale games, with CEO Jon Feltheimer joining Telltale's board of directors.

They say the partnership will allow both parties to "explore opportunities to co-develop existing and original IP into episodic games and television".

That means we'll likely see episodic adventure games based on Lionsgate's hot properties, which include the Hunger Games films and Mad Men. A few fans on the PCG crew relish the idea of roleplaying a terrifying Kelsey Grammer in an interactive Boss spinoff, but we'll be waiting a long time for that one. They're also linked to the Saw horror series, Orange is the new Black and, of course, Paris Hilton's my new BFF.

Interesting times for Telltale. Press release quotes from Peter Levin, Lionsgate's president of interactive ventures and games suggest that "the convergence between premium filmed entertainment brands and original game properties is a natural direction in which to continue diversifying our content business." Stop it Peter you don't know what you're doing to me.

My mind's already whirling with Lionsgate/Telltale game pitches. What do you think they should do first?

Animated ‘Animal Crackers’ Adds Sylvester Stallone, Danny DeVito and Ian McKellen

by Germain Lussier

Sylvester Stallone

Unlike live-action Hollywood films, animation isn’t star-driven. Stories are the stars in animation and, if you don’t believe it, look at the biggest animated film of all time: Frozen. Talented actors and singers in every role, none of which can yet sell a movie wholly on their own. Still, having big stars in your animated film doesn’t mean it’s bad. Pixar regularly gets some of the biggest names in the world to voice their characters.

Which is to say, the newly announced cast members for the animated film Animal Crackers are a mixed bag. But it’s a great cast none the less. Produced by Blue Dream Studios, Animal Crackers will feature the voices of Sylvester Stallone, Danny DeVito, Ian McKellen, Patrick Warburton, Gilbert Gottfried, Raven-Symoné, Harvey Fierstein and others. Read more about the Animal Crackers movie below.

The Wrap reported on the Animal Crackers movie cast, which also includes James Arnold Taylor, Tara Strong and Lydia Taylor.

Animal Crackers follows a family whose life is turned upside down when they inherit a rundown circus and a mysterious box of Animal Crackers, which magically change the person who eats them into the animal they have eaten — including monkeys, giraffes, lions, tigers and bears.

You know, I like that idea from directors Scott Christian Sava and Tony Bancroft. The possibilities are pretty endless and the human/animal transformations is something that demands animation. Here’s the poster:

Animal Crackers movie poster

Sava said this about getting this cast for the as yet unknown film:

When I was writing ‘Animal Crackers’ I had specific voices in my head. Certain characters I wrote with actors in mind. Horatio was always Sir Ian McKellen. Brock was totally Patrick Warburton. Bullet-Man could be no one else but Stallone! To find out that each and every one of these actors have agreed to come on board this film and bring these characters to life… I’m flipping out.

Animal Crackers is on track for a Summer 2016 release, but it does not yet have a domestic distributor.

Watch This: ‘The Raid’ Director Gareth Evans List His Top 5 Action Scenes

by David Chen

In the past five years, director Gareth Evans has seen has status grow from relative unknown to one of the best action directors alive. His film, Merantau, introduced the Indonesian martial arts form of Pencak Silat to the wider world, and his two follow-ups, The Raid and The Raid 2: Berandal (out in theaters right now), expanded on Silat’s usage and featured some of the most creatively shot and choreographed action/fight scenes in recent memory.

I had the chance to chat with Evans recently about the making of his Raid 2 teaser trailer. We also spoke about his five favorite action scenes, and in the below video essay, Evans breaks down exactly which films they are from and why/how each has influenced him.

Newswire: Fake Prince Harry and real Gordon Ramsay push Enlisted off the Fox schedule

by Erik Adams

The spring and summer schedule announced by Fox this afternoon reads like a TV British Invasion, with three Gordon Ramsay franchises returning to their traditional occupied territories beginning April 11 and the dating series I Wanna Marry “Harrypremiering May 27. Such moves can only be interpreted as a retaliation to BBC America’s brash Declaration of Comedic Independence—if the two networks were at all related, and not just having their programming decisions conflated in an effort to extend an already strained comic metaphor. But Kitchen Nightmares is about to seize the Friday-night timeslot of Enlisted, a sitcom about life in the U.S. Army, so why not indulge the make-’em-ups for just a little bit longer?

Yes, the news that goes unannounced within the press release from Fox involves Ramsay temporarily shouting Enlisted off of the network’s schedule, though that show’s creator Kevin Biegel has ...

Damon Lindelof Talks Set-Up, Vibe, and Ending of New HBO Show ‘The Leftovers’

by Germain Lussier

Damon Lindelof

Since Damon Lindelof left Twitter, he’s noticeably less a part of the public dialogue about entertainment. Which was the point after the venom he received for contributions to Prometheus and Star Trek Into Darkness. Part of his absence, too, is that he’s working on a brand new show for HBO called The Leftovers. Now he’s ready to share some details about it.

Based on a novel by Tom Perrotta, the show takes place in a New York town three years after 140 million people worldwide mysteriously disappeared. Was the disappearance based in science? Was it religion? How will it change how people live their lives? Lindelof talks about all that and more below, as he describes the show saying “if Lost and Friday Night Lights had a baby and then that baby was severely neglected, that would be The Leftovers.”

Lindelof’s quotes come from the new issue of Entertainment Weekly. There’s lots more there, including how he first got the idea to make the book a series, but here are some highlights.

Describing the set-up of the show:

You’ve got this big, crazy, supernatural — potentially spiritual — idea that informs every episode of the show that we’ll ever make, which is that this thing happened, this sudden departure of 140 million people which depending on what side of it you’re on, could be the Rapture. There could be some yet-as-undetermined scientific explanation for it, but still it’s miraculous. The traditional way of telling this story is you’re in immediate aftermath of this event. It’s all that anyone can talk about. Dropping into these people’s lives three years later and saying ‘This is the moment in which they get back to their lives as they were or they decide that they can’t get back to their lives as they were,’ that’s a much more interesting idea. So all decisions that the characters are making is informed by a supernatural idea, but the show is not presenting ongoing supernatural phenomena. You’re not looking at the sky seeing dragons like you are in Game of Thrones.  Mulder and Scully are are not showing up and knocking on doors. But this idea of the elephant in the room of the Departure informs everything that’s happening on this show, and I felt that that was a fairly unique thing that I hadn’t really seen before on TV.

The vibe of the series:

This is going to be a show about sudden and abrupt loss and more importantly, what will at least in its initial presentation seem to be one that you can’t receive closure from. If someone dies, that’s a horrible thing and they must be mourned. But in this instance, you don’t even know if you’re supposed to mourn who’s been departed because they could be walking through your door tomorrow, or you could be zapped up or down or sideways to wherever they are. So this lack of understanding as to what just occurred is the most pervasive feeling, not just in the moment that it happens but certainly three years later when the story starts.

And, of course, the quintessential Lindelof question. Does he have an ending?

The answer is yes, but I think that there is a fair amount of hubris in planning too far ahead, because we don’t know if anyone’s going to watch the show or if there’s going to be a second season of the show. If the first season works and we like it and the audience likes it — and most of all, HBO likes it — then it will be time to start having conversations about how long this story should be, and in parentheses I would put: Not as long as you’d think. I don’t want to go into this with the attitude of we’re just going to keep writing this show until we don’t want to write it anymore. Particularly with a premise like this one, I really do feel that it should be finite. What that means exactly is a conversation for another day, but everybody involved agrees with that idea creatively. It’s not a show that can go on for many, many, many years.

Head over to EW to read more from the writer/producer, including how The Leftovers will borrow from The Simpsons and Peter Berg directing the pilot. The Leftovers will premiere Summer 2014. Also, here’s our first look at star Justin Theroux in the series.

Ben Stiller Explains Deleted Opening to ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’

by Germain Lussier

Secret Life Of Walter Mitty camera

One of the biggest Hollywood releases this Christmas is Ben Stiller‘s remake The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a family-friendly tale of a lonely man whose day dreams inspire him to go on a globe trotting adventure. In the end, he’ll try to become the best possible version of himself.

When you see it, you’ll realize not only did Stiller (who directed and stars) have a lot of story to tell, he had a ton of different tones to balance, which is an incredibly difficult thing for any director. To manage the task, he was forced to cut an entire alternate opening of the film. At a recent Q&A presented by Film Independent at LACMA, he explained what the scene entailed and why he cut it. It’s a pretty awesome look inside the directorial mind of a man best known for being a humorous actor.

The final film, which hits theaters December 25, stars with Walter Mitty (Stiller) sitting at his kitchen table, balancing his check book. Here’s what Stiller said about the original opening:

We used to have an opening to the movie I ended up cutting. A little montage at the beginning of the movie of Walter’s morning routine. And it started out with him on this exercise bike – I like talking about this because I miss it – the first image was the LED screen on his exercise bike was in the shape of a mountain and he’s biking up this mountain and eventually he ends up going up this mountain. But it’s him on this exercise bike and I thought it showed him as a guy who took care of himself, was ready to go, but was having a real life and is on a fake bike. That idea is, to me, very important that he’s not somebody that’s sort of odd or weird. He’s just a guy who, like a lot of people, isn’t quite the full version of what he wanted to be.

Throughout editing the movie I was really having to balance the pacing of the movie and I felt that, ultimately, it was a nice, kind o,f artful little sequence that was maybe too much of that. My producing partner said it was celebrating the movie too much. Ultimately, the reason I cut it was it made him feel a little more lonely then I wanted him to feel in the beginning. And also the movie is about a guy just trying to get through everyday life, so to open with a guy trying to balance his check book is more to the point. And it’s also what Steve [Conrad] wrote in the script. I came up with this whole sequence, we shot it, sort of fell in love with it and then ultimately I ended up cutting it. Then when I looked back at a draft of the script and said ‘Oh [the check book] is what Steve wrote.’

Stiller also talked about another scene/storyline that got cut involving Walter’s sister, played by Kathryn Hahn. Minor spoilers follow.

There was a storyline we ended up cutting out that his sister really starts to see Walter for the first time. I had to cut it for pacing and focusing the story. There was a scene that was really good. Kathryn Hahn, who I’m a big fan of – I saw her and Adam Scott in Step Brothers and became obsessed with that movie. So Kathryn meets Walter when he comes back from the airport from Iceland and he’s all sort of torn up from the shark fight and they go to the impound lot because she was in charge of the piano and the piano got towed. And so they have to get the piano from the impound lot and she looks at him and says ‘What happened to you?’ And he said ‘I got into a fight with a shark, whatever it was for work,’ and she’s like ‘You got into a shark fight?’ He’s like ‘Yeah I’m okay whatever,’ and then she sort of sees for the first time that he’s, wow, like doing stuff. And she says ‘You know what? I’ll take care of this. I got this. Go do whatever you have to do.’ So it’s this subtle shift in her that, you know, was a little bit of a progression for her character and unfortunately the movie couldn’t bear it but that family dynamic was important.

Read Anthony Hopkins’ Glowing Letter to Cast and Crew of ‘Breaking Bad’

by Germain Lussier

Cranston Hopkins

Sometimes it’s hard to imagine having something in common with famous actors and actresses. Though they make their living entertaining us, often playing larger-than-life characters, they’re still human. Simple pleasures like a fantastic TV show dazzle them as much as it does us.

With that in mind, here’s a crazy story. Recently, Anthony Hopkins binge watched the entire five seasons of Breaking Bad, buying the newest episodes on Amazon to finish the series. Afterwards, he was so inspired, he wrote a letter to Bryan Cranston praising the show, and calling Cranston’s performance as Walter White “the best acting I have seen – ever.”

It’s a beautiful letter coming from, himself, of the best actors ever. Read it below.

The letter was posted by Gomey himself, Steven Michael Quezada, on Facebook. Thanks to Vanity Fair for the heads up. Here it is:

Dear Mister Cranston.

I wanted to write you this email – so I am contacting you through Jeremy Barber – I take it we are both represented by UTA . Great agency.

I’ve just finished a marathon of watching “BREAKING BAD” – from episode one of the First Season – to the last eight episodes of the Sixth Season. [Ed note: There are in fact five seasons of Breaking Bad.] (I downloaded the last season on AMAZON) A total of two weeks (addictive) viewing.

I have never watched anything like it. Brilliant!

Your performance as Walter White was the best acting I have seen – ever.

I know there is so much smoke blowing and sickening bullshit in this business, and I’ve sort of lost belief in anything really.

But this work of yours is spectacular – absolutely stunning. What is extraordinary, is the sheer power of everyone in the entire production. What was it? Five or six years in the making? How the producers (yourself being one of them), the writers, directors, cinematographers…. every department – casting etc. managed to keep the discipline and control from beginning to the end is (that over used word) awesome.

From what started as a black comedy, descended into a labyrinth of blood, destruction and hell. It was like a great Jacobean, Shakespearian or Greek Tragedy.

If you ever get a chance to – would you pass on my admiration to everyone – Anna Gunn, Dean Norris, Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt, R.J. Mitte, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Steven Michael Quezada – everyone – everyone gave master classes of performance … The list is endless.

Thank you. That kind of work/artistry is rare, and when, once in a while, it occurs, as in this epic work, it restores confidence.

You and all the cast are the best actors I’ve ever seen.

That may sound like a good lung full of smoke blowing. But it is not. It’s almost midnight out here in Malibu, and I felt compelled to write this email.

Congratulations and my deepest respect. You are truly a great, great actor.

Best regards

Tony Hopkins.
