‘Jimi: All Is By My Side’ Trailer: André Benjamin Brings Hendrix to Life

by Russ Fischer

Jimi Hendrix biopic trailer

André Benjamin, aka André 3000 of Outkast, does a solid job of playing Jimi Hendrix in the movie Jimi: All Is By My Side. The film isn’t your typical biopic, as it veers away from providing a top to bottom account of the guitarist’s life. Instead, it focuses on the year of Hendix’s life in which he went from being an unknown supporting player to a guy on the brink of stardom.

During that year, he meets Linda Keith (Imogen Poots), who dates Keith Richards and consequently has the connections to get Jimi’s career started. The film wanders through this strange, intense year in the man’s life with an odd rhythm that gives it a unique feel. Some of that is captured in the new Jimi: All Is By My Side trailer, which you can see below.

Written and directed by 12 Years a Slave Oscar-winner John Ridley, this movie is more about Hendrix evolving as a person than it is an account of his life as a performer. It isn’t entirely satisfying, but it is different, and Benjamin’s performance is definitely worth a look. You won’t hear any Hendrix music in the film, but Ridley sidesteps that by using tunes that Hendrix played as he was starting up his own band.

Jimi: All Is By My Side will open on September 26. Trailer via XLrator Media.

OutKast’s André Benjamin stars as Jimi Hendrix in this revealing biopic from Academy Award-winning writer-director John Ridley (12 Years A Slave). Covering a year in Hendrix’s life from 1966-67 as an unknown backup guitarist playing New York’s Cheetah Club to making his mark in London’s music scene up until his Monterey Pop triumph, the film presents an intimate portrait of the sensitive young musician on the verge of becoming a rock legend.

‘Horrible Bosses 2′ Trailer Wants to Take a Sequel on Jennifer Aniston’s Chest

by Scott Beggs
Horrible Bosses

Warner Bros.

The great thing about this Horrible Bosses 2 teaser is that it doesn’t tell you anything about the movie at all. It exists only to raise questions, show off some impressive physical comedy and to put dirty words in Jennifer Aniston‘s mouth. Familiar faces are flashed, and we learn that Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis and Jason Bateman are back to perpetrate a kidnapping.

But why? They wanted to murder their bosses in the first film because they were awful. Now, their criminal path isn’t so clear.

Yet, Aniston’s character’s proclivities are back in full force. See for yourself:

It’s good to see the old gang back in slow motion status, but Sean Anders (Sex DriveThat’s My Boy) has taken over the helm from Seth Gordon. Granted, their comic sensibilities aren’t exactly alien, and the trailer makes it look like they’ve captured the low stakes magic again.

Watching the three stars do that fantastic parking lot walk, I couldn’t help but wonder if Office Space‘s legacy has finally blossomed — providing a decade of nerdy guys acting like badasses while aping rap video swagger.

Them and Rose Byrne, right?

It’s also possible that it’s not used too often, but the last time a Cleveland Steamer joke really landed was, what, Not Another Teen Movie? If I’m missing something, it’s obviously the most egregious failure of my career.

Horrible Bosses 2 is out November 26th.

34 Things You Didn't Know about Breaking Bad

by John Farrier

Robin Edds of Buzzfeed dove into the production history of Breaking Bad and found surprising bits of information about the actors' lives and the composition of the show. Here's a sample:

1. After watching Season 5, Episode 14 — “Ozymandias” — George R.R. Martin called Walter White a bigger monster than anyone in Game of Thrones and vowed to “do something about that” in his next book. Eek.

2. Aaron Paul has never had any acting classes. During a Reddit AMA he said: “I always just thought, ‘Hey, pretend like you’re being someone else and that’s all there is to it.’”

3. Due to the success of the show, some drug dealers have actually started adding blue dye to their crystal meth in an effort to “brand” their product. [...]

5. Nearly two decades before landing the role of Walter White, Bryan Cranston was in Power Rangers! Below you can hear him as the voice of the evil Twin Man.

(Video Link)

Here's a video showing Bryan Cranston voicing that monster.

Cranston's involvement with Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers was surprisingly deep. One of the characters on that show, Billy Cranston, AKA the Blue Ranger, was named after him.

The title may seem like a foreign language, but it’s just a new SyFy film. Sharktopus, the combination shark-octopus, finds a new nemesis in a pteradactyl-fish hybrid. As with most SyFy creature films, we can expect that all the expensive shots of the actual creatures are here in the half-minute trailer. If you want to make sure, the movie premieres August 2 on SyFy.

Wonderful Moments In Closed Captioning

by Zeon Santos

(Image Via The Mary Sue)

It must be tough to decide what to include when creating closed captions for movies and TV shows, because there are a lot of background noises, sound effects and character reactions that don’t really need to be included:

(Image Via Tumblr)

In fact, when you include these odd background bits in the captions it ends up making them really funny to read:

(Image Via Memeguy)

Having never consulted with someone who’s hearing impaired to find out if they like the inclusion of these sounds, I have no idea whether the folks who create the closed captioning include them because of popular opinion, because they’re trying to be as complete as possible, or simply to amuse themselves:

Newswire: Robin Thicke assaulted by Twitter users who knew he wanted it

by Sean O'Neal

Never one to believe that some things shouldn’t be made embarrassingly public, Robin Thicke promoted his new stalker musical Paula by opening himself up to a live Twitter Q&A. “Have a burning question for @robinthicke? Submit your ?s for tomorrow’s Twitter Q+A using #AskThicke,” VH1 tweeted yesterday, and as it turns out, plenty of people did have ?s. And indeed, they burned.

Of course, after months of “Blurred Lines” being called out for lyrics that make it the song version of Jodie Foster in The Accused, his irritating performance with Miley Cyrus at the VMAs, his preemptive lawsuit against Marvin Gaye’s family over a song he admitted up front he had borrowed from, his ugly separation from wife Paula Patton amid accusations of years of infidelity, and his even uglier subsequent attempt to win her back with an album dedicated entirely to making her (and ...

Newswire: Mattel created a Hot Wheels version of “The Homer” for Comic-Con

by William Hughes

Every year, toy manufacturers ply the nostalgia-loving, disposable-income-having hordes that attend the San Diego Comic-Con with exclusive merchandise. In the past, companies have offered some hard-to-pass-up stuff—like this gorgeous metal Pac-Man from 2013, or this figure of beloved Gungan Jar Jar Binks, frozen in carbonite, from 2012—but Mattel may have surpassed them all this year. The Hot Wheels producer has released a die-cast recreation of the only car ever designed with multiple bubble domes, shag carpeting, and enough horns that even the angriest of hands can find one when “La Cucaracha” needs to be unleashed.

Yes, it’s “The Homer,” the eponymous creation of Springfield’s favorite son, from the classic second season Simpsons episode, “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?”. It’s hard to tell from the pictures whether the car has the huge cup holders the design specs call for, but the giant fins, lime-green exterior, and ...

Sherlock Fans, You Will Be Getting A Fourth Season AND A Special

by Penn Collins
Corey

Nice!

American fans of British television are used to being jerked around a little bit. Entire series will run for a combined ten episodes, broken into two comically short seasons, with about two years in between. It makes Mad Men seem like it’s on a rush order.

Well, you can set your cynicism aside for Sherlock, which will be returning for a fourth season (of probably only three long episodes) and a special before that airs, or even shoots.

The special will adhere to the storyline and resolve some season 3 questions, so think of it more as an early first episode of season 4 than something standalone. You know, like you would normally think of a special.

The special begins filming early next year, and the season starts filming late next year. In the meantime, get reacquainted with the first 9 episodes. That should take you a day or so.

Yahoo Resurrects ‘Community’ for a Sixth Season

by Russ Fischer

community yahoo

#SixSeasonsandaMovie isn’t yet a dead idea. NBC canceled Dan Harmon‘s show Community earlier this year, but it seemed like there was still a chance that it would end up with a new home. Talks with Hulu didn’t go anywhere, but Yahoo wants a show — and now Yahoo has the sixth (and last?) season of Community. The deal was announced today just hours before the cast’s contract collectively expires. More details of the Community Yahoo deal are below.

Earlier, Dan Harmon tweeted something that was interpreted by some as a death for the show:

It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden. My love is stronger than my fear of death. #SixSeasonsAndAMovie

— Dan Harmon (@danharmon) June 30, 2014

But now we have this:

See you in the fall. #CommunityLivesOn pic.twitter.com/HSIzD0StT9

— Yahoo Screen (@YahooScreen) June 30, 2014

Yahoo has made a deal with producer Sony Pictures Television to stream a 13-episode sixth season of the show. Harmon will return as showrunner, and took a little swipe at NBC in his packaged statement about the Yahoo deal:

I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo. I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!

Vulture suggests that the move to Yahoo won’t dramatically reduce the budget for this upcoming season. And Chris McKenna is in talks to return as exec producer.

And so the wild tale of Community continues — three solid seasons, followed by Harmon’s ouster, and the limp fourth season, then Harmon’s return for the fifth season. With this move, Community goes to a home with little experience running a show of this size, but which certainly has a long reach. Now we’ll see if any previously departed cast members return, and where talk of a movie goes.

Update: THR talked to Sony Pictures Television president of programming and production Zack Van Amburg, who said the entire cast is returning, and explained, “We try so hard and have a pretty decent record now of saving and/or rescuing some of our favorite shows, whether it’s Damages or Unforgettable.” He went on to say,

We had a series of conversations with NBC and finally Bob, as nicely as he could, said, “Stop f—ing calling me about Community!” [Laughs.] We pushed that one too much and we started to reach out to some of our other partners and networks. I saw it speculated in the press that there was decent interest from Hulu. That was true. We had a pretty advanced conversation. They have been an amazing partner; the show has done great things for them and their support has been beyond appreciated. It made sense that between Hulu and Comedy Central — who both currently carry the show — that maybe that was going to be our savior. We were in pretty advanced conversations with Hulu and we had made a half-dozen or so phone calls to other places. Then out of the blue — and this never happens — I got the best phone call in the world from Yahoo selling us on why Yahoo would be great destination [forCommunity]. To be honest, we were so far down the path with Hulu that, hopefully not arrogant but [we were], maybe a little bit dismissive of their overture, which made them that much more committed to explaining to us and to Joel McHale and Dan Harmon why this was going to be a cornerstone of the new Yahoo that they’re about to unveil to the world.

Finally, the exec joked “there’s no way we’re not making the movie now!” before going on to say,

I’d be lying if I told you that we have not had some very early and preliminary conversations that are very exciting about what a potential movie could be and who might direct it. It’s early but it’s completely in our thought process.

If the film happens, will it be a digital stream, or a theatrical release? That’s a question we can’t answer just yet.

First Look: Denis Leary as a Washed-Up Rocker in New FX Series ‘Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll’

by Russ Fischer

denis-leary

Denis Leary and FX are teaming up once more. Leary’s show Rescue Me (above), which he co-created with Peter Tolan, ran for seven seasons on FX, ending in 2011. Now the channel has ordered a ten-episode first season of Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, in which Leary stars as Johnny Rock, a would-be rock star who nearly became a sensation in the early ’90s before torpedoing his career my making terrible choices.

The new series will premiere in 2015, but we now have the first image of Leary and co-stars John Corbett, John Ales, and Robert Kelly as a paunchy rock band with attitude and some horrible hair. Check it out below.

Here are The Heathens, the band that Leary’s character fronts.

Denis Leary in Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll

Elizabeth Gillies and Elaine Hendrix also feture in the show. Leary wrote the pilot, which was directed by Michael Blieden.

FX provides some info on the show:

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll is centered on Johnny Rock (Leary), a middle-aged rock ‘n roller who desperately wanted to be rich and famous. So far, he’s 0 for 2. As the magnificently talented lead singer of New York’s legendary early 90?s band The Heathens, Johnny was on his way to the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. His best friend Flash (Corbett) was being called the next number one lead guitar player on planet earth. The critics loved them. Their live shows were selling out.

But Johnny had a problem with booze. And coke. And weed. And pills. And cough medicine. And oh yeah — he slept with Flash’s wife. And his bass player’s fiancé. The band broke up the same day their first and only record was released. 25 years later Johnny is trying to get the band back together. Why? Because as his soon-to-be-ex manager Ira Feinbaum tells him: “Johnny, you’re 50, broke and completely anonymous. In rock ‘n roll you know what that makes you? A bartender.” 25 years later the sex might be harder to find, the drugs might be Luvox and Crestor and Cialis — but rock ‘n roll will never die. It just has a bigger prostate.

Leary told Variety

I am extremely elated at the opportunity to once again be working with John Landgraf and the fine executive talent over at FX. They have a great platform for comedy, an award-winning marketing team and an amazing new Nespresso machine in the conference room. The Gran Maestria C520 Platinum? Get this: it heats the cup! Also, doing this show with FX will allow me to live one of my last show-business dreams: Emmy-winner Peter Tolan will be playing my gay stepdad. I know what you’re thinking – isn’t Peter just a few years older than Denis? In fact, we are the same exact age. I’m just prettier.

Newswire: Pacific Rim 2 to officially punch more giant monsters in 2017

by Sam Barsanti
Corey

I actually really liked this movie.

Pacific Rim is one of those movies that—whether people ended up liking it or not—everybody in the world wanted to like it. Giant robots punching the shit out of giant monsters! Overly dramatic speeches! Idris Elba! Movies like Pacific Rim are pretty much the reason movies were invented in the first place, and now Guillermo del Toro is getting another chance to blind us all with super-awesome monster-smashing robot punches.

As del Toro revealed in a special YouTube video, he’s officially making a sequel to Pacific Rim with Travis Beacham (who wrote the original’s screenplay) and Zak Penn (who is rewriting the Ready Player One adaptation). The film will be distributed in the United States by Universal, and it’s set for release on April 7, 2017.

In case anyone is worried that del Toro will get too clever and try to do something new with ...
