Great Job, Internet!: Here are some gorgeous, perfect, fake vinyl Bill Murray figures that you’ll never own

by William Hughes

Digital effects company A Large Evil Corporation is living up to its name, continuing to mercilessly taunt us with digital versions of gorgeous pop culture vinyl figures that we’ll never actually be able to own, because they don’t really exist. The company began its madness-inducing crusade with a series of figures based on Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s characters from Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy, which we foolishly shared with you last month, unaware that we were only playing into the company’s vile plans. Apparently the response to those figures has been great, so the group has taken the next logical step by teasing the hell out of us with even more figures, instead of just taking its designs down to the Vinyl Plant (or wherever figurines come from) and having them made.

So anyway, here are some more pictures of things that would look amazing ...

Childish Gambino has been in the news lately for making some grandiose claims, and now he gets his chance to back them up. Today, the former Community star released his STN MTN / Kauai mixtape. It’s part of DJ Drama’s Gangsta Grillz mixtape series, and thus a crucial rite of passage for any Georgia rappers. And on the tape, he raps over well-known Atlanta beats like Ludacris’ “Southern Hospitality,” Rich Kidz’ “My Patna Dem,” Future’s “Move That Dope,” and Maceo’s “Nextel Chirp.” He also sings Usher’s “U Don’t Have To Call.” Atlanta rapper Young Scooter guests. If you’re noticing a theme here, it is not coincidental. Check out the tape below.

Infographic: Chronological ‘Kill Bill’ Timeline

by Germain Lussier

Noah Smith - Kill Bill Timeline 1

Quentin Tarantino loves telling stories out of sequence. From his very first film, the director has written and edited his films with some pieces out of order, creating dramatic irony, shock value, heightened drama and more. He also makes the audience engage more with the film as we piece together the hows and whys of questions like when did Mr. Orange meet Mr. White, how does Vincent Vega know Mia Wallace, how did O-Ren gain power, etc. Viewing a Tarantino film multiple times then becomes essential, simply because once you know how things play out, you begin to see the layering he’s created throughout.

Designer Noah Daniel Smith knows this. He appreciates it. But he also appreciates how awesome it can look when you put the scenes in order. Two years after making a chronological timeline of Pulp FictionSmith has now put Kill Bill in chronological order for a new poster. Check out the full Kill Bill Timeline below.

Here’s the chronological Kill Bill timeline poster by Noah Daniel Smith.

‘Tak3n’ Trailer: Liam Neeson Is Now a Fugitiv3

by Russ Fischer

Tak3n trailer

Liam Neeson, special set of skills, daughter in danger, it’s all pretty familiar now. Time to shake things up just enough to bring audiences back. So for Taken 3, now officially called Tak3n, the Neeson character Bryan Mills is in Richard Kimble mode as he’s framed for the murder of his wife. Now a fugitive, Mills goes on the run to preserve his own freedom and watch over his surviving daughter (Maggie Grace) while trying to elude authorities. (Here Forest Whitaker seemingly stands in Tommy Lee Jones as the lead voice of authority.) Watch the Tak3n trailer here.

Taken 2 director Olivier Megaton returns to direct, with Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen once again scripting.

Tak3n opens on January 9th, 2015. Trailer via Fox.

Liam Neeson returns as ex-covert operative Bryan Mills, whose reconciliation with his ex-wife is tragically cut short when she is brutally murdered. Consumed with rage, and framed for the crime, he goes on the run to evade the relentless pursuit of the CIA, FBI and the police. For one last time, Mills must use his “particular set of skills,” to track down the real killers, exact his unique brand of justice, and protect the only thing that matters to him now – his daughter.

Great Job, Internet!: “Under The Deep Sea” riffs on The Little Mermaid, explores terrifying sea creatures

by Caroline Siede

College Humor’s latest parody combines ’90s nostalgia for Disney Renaissance films, old fashioned learning, and terrifying sea creatures. The video reimagines The Little Mermaid’s ode to underwater living, “Under The Sea,” as a catalog of deep sea creatures called “Under The Deep Sea.” Instead of singing about carps, bass, and blowfish who can really blow, Sebastian now reminds everyone that colossal squids, ghost sharks, and giant spider crabs are indeed things that exist in our real ocean. Uproxx claims a fair chunk of the video is scientifically accurate which puts Ariel’s desperate desire to escape the sea into a whole new perspective.

Newswire: Pornhub wants musicians to release on its wide-open label

by Sean O'Neal

As evidenced by the hiring of Coolio to rap about masturbating, Pornhub Records is not some tossed-off lark. It is a growing enterprise that aims to attract and nurture musical artists, in much the same way it has attracted and nurtured fans of sex without all that tedious exposition. So today, PornHub has announced the official launch of its Pornhub Records label, which it will use to foster the careers of cutting-edge musicians besides Coolio. And like everything else about Pornhub, it’s entirely in your hands.

Whereas landing traditional record deals typically require a lot of A&R wooing and publicist glad-handing, Pornhub, as always, cuts out the foreplay. It’s devised a contest to find an official “anthem” for Pornhub, and any artist who has one can just shove it right in their gaping servers. One winner will receive $5,000 toward a music video to be featured ...

Newswire: John Oliver’s ratings have now surpassed Bill Maher’s

by Katie Rife
Corey

Good. Hate Bill Mahr.

Regime change is at hand at HBO, as America’s eccentric British neighbor, John Oliver, has edged out America’s pot-smoking uncle, Bill Maher, in the ratings. In the five months since its debut, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver has grown to an average 4.1 million viewers a week, just above Real Time With Bill Maher’s 4 million. These numbers include both HBO Go and DVR plays, eliminating the X-factor of people not being home when Real Time airs Friday nights at 10 p.m. (Although, to be fair, Last Week Tonight has an even crappier time slot—Sunday nights at 11 p.m.)

A major factor in Last Week Tonight’s success has been HBO’s strategy of posting the centerpiece segment from each week’s show in full on YouTube after the episode airs, generating huge amounts of media coverage and social media buzz for ...

Great Job, Internet!: Wakko’s states and capitals song from Animaniacs expanded, updated

by Joe Blevins

Animaniacs ceased production in 1998, but several clips from the show have enjoyed remarkable second lives as YouTube videos. Case in point: Wakko’s musical rundown of states and capitals, set to the tune of “Turkey In The Straw.” Presumably, the Internet has allowed an entirely new generation to use this instructional ditty as a mnemonic device during geography tests. And now, a YouTuber who self-identifies as “foundring” has uploaded his own updated, supersized remake of the classic tune. Cycling through the original song takes foundring less than two minutes. The remaining nine are devoted to foreign capitals, served with a smattering of political commentary. (“Baghdad’s in Iraq / The U.S. lied to go invade ya / Now we’ve covered all the countries and the capitals in Asia.”)

Despite its epic length, the clip is a modest affair from a technical standpoint. In one unbroken take, which foundring says ...

Laura Marling Covers Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone”

by Genevieve Oliver

Laura Marling may be from the UK, but she’s really good at making folk-y, blues-y Americana – so it makes sense that she and her friend, fellow Americana-inclined folk musician Eddie Berman, have taken on Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone,” for a cover that’ll appear on Berman’s upcoming LP Polyhymnia. You can watch a video of them performing the song together – not only do their voices sound fantastic entwined over Berman’s gently plucked guitar, but their affection for the track is palpable and guaranteed to give you chills. We just wish Marling could show off some of her guitar skills, too. Check it out below – Polyhymnia is out October 21st.

Pauly Shore Stands Alone Trailer: The Life Of A Struggling Aging Comedian

by Peter Sciretta

Pauly Shore Stands Alone trailer
Showtime has acquired the independent documentary feature Pauly Shore Stands Alone about the life of a struggling and aging comedian. The Pauly Shore film was produced by a /Film reader and recently won Best Documentary Feature at the Downtown Los Angeles Film Festival, and is now set to premiere on the premium cable channel on December 4th 2014. Unlike some of Shore’s recent efforts, Pauly Shore Stands Alone is not a fake documentary or mockumentary and actually seems to be an interesting look at a comic trying to run back into the spotlight after his 15 minutes of fame had ended. The Pauly Shore Stands Alone trailer can be watched after the jump.

The Pauly Shore Stands Alone trailer comes via Deadline, who broke the acquisition news:

‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ Trailer: The Most Dangerous Job Interview in the World

by Angie Han

Kingsman The Secret Service

After the success of Kick-Ass, director Matthew Vaughn and Mark Millar are teaming up again for another action-packed comic book movie. Kingsman: The Secret Service stars Colin Firth as an ultra-competent spy who recruits a troubled but talented street kid (Taron Egerton) for his top-secret organization.

Like Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service takes on familiar genre tropes with wit and verve. We’ve seen well-dressed, well-mannered James Bond figures before, but probably never quite like this. Hit the jump to watch the new Kingsman The Secret Service trailer. It also features a new Iggy Azalea and Ellie Goulding track, if that’s your thing.

Fox unveiled the new Kingsman The Secret Service trailer on YouTube.

Much of the footage is the same stuff shown at Comic-Con, CinemaCon, and WonderCon, but hey, it still looks really good. Well — aside from that one weird moment at the end where one of the characters clearly has a CG face. Maybe that’s explained in the movie.

Meanwhile, Millar continues to prove about as popular with Hollywood as any comic creator can be that isn’t called “Marvel” or “DC.” There are adaptations of his books StarlightSuperior, MPHNemesis, and Kindergarten Heroes all currently in various stages of development. And of course, he’s already seen his books Kick-Ass and Wanted turned into movies.

Kingsman: The Secret Service opens February 13, 2015. Also starring are Samuel L. Jackson as the villain, Michael Caine as the head of the spy organization, Mark Strong as another Kingsman officer, and Mark Hamill as some guy not named Mark Hamill.

Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men First Class), Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

Paramount Developing Key and Peele ‘Substitute Teacher’ Movie

by Russ Fischer

Key and Peele Substitute Teacher movie

Between them, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele have a growing movie resume, but the success of their comedy show Key and Peele is bringing them new opportunities on the big screen. Key and Peele are producing the new Police Academy reboot, and seem to have a great degree of creative control on that film. They’re also working on a film with Judd Apatow. And now, as the fourth season of Key and Peele premieres they’re working with Paramount on a Substitute Teacher movie, bringing the show’s Mr. Garvey character to the big screen.

EW talked to the duo, and Key said of the Mr. Garvey movie,

We’re in negotiations at Paramount to make a Substitute Teacher movie. Two of our writers are penning it. Well, they’re not penning it as we speak — it’s getting there.

Here’s the Mr. Garvey sketch that got a lot of attention:

Key and Peele Substitute Teacher Movie

How to make that into a movie? Obviously that’s just one comic idea, but if the writers expand the idea of the guy who persistently misunderstands the culture around him into a bigger idea, there could be a lot of ground to cover.

They also talked about the new Police Academy movie they’re producing. Peele explained,

We were brought on to take the creative lead with it. We got two of our friends, Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen [The Mindy Project] — brilliant, funny men. They’re going to be penning the script. When we start working with the script and seeing it, we’ll make the decision [of whether or not to be in the film]. Is Key and Peele a distraction from Police Academy? We’ll figure it out. Either way, we’ll make the best call for the movie.

The Judd Apatow movie is starting over with a new idea, with Key saying “There was an idea with Judd, [but] we’re not doing that idea anymore. Now we’re going to start from ground zero and start all over again.” And Peele is developing a horror film with Darko Entertainment that he wants to direct.

The McDonald's Cocaine Spoon Fiasco

by Miss Cellania

If you were around in the 1970s, you might remember the McDonalds coffee spoon, which was nicknamed the McSpoon. It was small, well-designed, perfect for stirring coffee, with a scoop about size of a nostril, and could hold exactly 100 milligrams of cocaine. Of course, most people used the disposable spoon to stir sugar in their coffee, but it was the Model Drug Paraphernalia Act that brought the minority use of the spoon to the general public. Under the act, which was only enacted at the state level, innocuous items such as baggies and straws could be labeled a “drug paraphernalia.”

Just prior to the creation of the Model Drug Paraphernalia Act, then-Senators Joe Biden and Charles Mathias held a hearing in Baltimore, where the Paraphernalia Trade Association (who represents headshop vendors) could voice their concerns. The PTA swiftly went about arguing that, under such a broad definition, anything could be deemed “paraphernalia.”

According to minutes from the hearing, one PTA representative attempted to make a mockery of the proposed law. “Look at this,” he facetiously told the panel, thrusting a McDonald’s coffee stirring spoon above his head. “This is the best cocaine spoon in town and it’s free with every cup of coffee at McDonalds.”

His intention was to highlight how vague and overreaching the act was, but it set into motion a storm of controversy for McDonalds and the demise of the McSpoon. Oh, you can still get one, but they’re collector’s items now, and will cost you. Read the story of the little spoon that was a casualty of the War on Drugs at Pricenomics. -via Metafilter

7 Incredible Natural Phenomena You May Have Never Seen

by RemyCarreiro

Weather is a fairly compelling spectacle. Not just weather itself, but some of the weirder weather phenomena that occurs throughout the world. The stuff we hear about, but never see. Truthfully, in regards to some of the things mentioned on the following list, you may not even HEARD of them.

While everyone can say they have seen a particularly tumultuous rainstorm before, what about when it rains fish in Honduras? That is one we might not as familiar with.

Witnesses of this phenomenon state that it begins with a dark cloud in the sky followed by lightning, thunder, strong winds and heavy rain for 2 to 3 hours. Once the rain has stopped, hundreds of living fish are found on the ground. People take the fish home to cook and eat them.

I am not even sure what is weirder. The fact that the sky rains fish semi-regularly in Honduras, or the fact that the natives take the strange fish, cook it, and eat it. To them, it is a gift from the Gods. To us, it is science.

This list over at Oddee of strange natural phenomena is well worth checking out, as raining fish seems to be the tip if the iceberg. Don't worry. It is not all weather related. One of the entries is about goats who climb trees.

Yup. You just read that correctly.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Streaming Now on Vimeo

Corey

Still love this show.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Streaming

In the mood to watch two aliens and a human verbally eviscerate some of the worst movies of all time? Yes, Mystery Science Theater 3000 is now available to stream online. Vimeo recently uploaded 80 episodes of the hilarious show and the company is still working on clearing rights for the remaining episodes to bring them online, too. Read more about Mystery Science Theater 3000 streaming below.

Variety broke the news of the MST3K streaming deal. According to their story, besides the 80 episodes that are on there now, at least a dozen new episodes are just waiting to be cleared for the service.

Unfortunately, the episodes aren’t free. You can purchase all 80 episodes for $300, which is a savings considering each episode is $2.99 to rent and $9.99 to purchase. In all, there are almost 200 total episodes of the cult comedy series.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 hit the air in 1988. Comedy Central most famously aired the show for seven seasons before it moved to the Sci-Fi Channel. It was then made into its own movie in 1996 before going off the air in 1999. The premise featured two robots and a man, played by different actors over the years, stranded on a space station and forced to watch terrible movies. Their silhouettes were superimposed on the screen as they wisecracked about how bad each film was.

Basically, it became a cult sensation because the characters did what friends do when they watch a bad movie: make fun of it. Odds are though, Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo were funnier than your friends.

At the moment, some episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 are available on certain streaming services but this is by far the most comprehensive collection yet online. Here’s the trailer from Vimeo, and you can click here to get all the episodes.
