Pick’s Theorem

by Greg Ross

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gitterpolygon.svg

Georg Alexander Pick found a useful way to determine the area of a simple polygon with integer coordinates. If i is the number of lattice points in the interior and b is the number of lattice points on the boundary, then the area is given by

pick's theorem

There are 40 lattice points in the interior of the figure above and 12 on the boundary, so its area is 40 + 12/2 – 1 = 45.

junodog asked: Yo, I heard a while back that a good response to problematic ‘humor’ is to just be like “I don’t get it” and watch them try to explain why it’s funny. Either they completely out themselves as racists or they squirm trying to make themselves *not* seem racist.

I SUPPOSE YOU COULD TRY THIS

canu - corporal violet

When Napoleon left France for Elba, his supporters wore violets as a secret sign of their allegiance. This 1815 colour print by Jean-Dominique Etienne Canu, Le Secret du Caporal La Violette, conceals images of the exiled emperor, his wife, and his son. Where are they?

The towns of Dull, Scotland, and Boring, Oregon, became sister cities in 2012.

“One of the things our communities share is the weather,” Boring journalist Jim Hart told the BBC. “We get a lot of rain and snow every year.”

144-Hour Candle

by drew

candle-week

A candle that burns for 144 hours, the wick end rotating as it pulls the coiled candle up from below, seems like a neat idea. Except:

1. Unattended flames (primarily candles) cause over 1/3 of the house fires in the USA annually.

2. According to one of the two reviews, the wax drips down onto the coil as soon as the candle burns a little bit, ruining the whole thing immediately.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Thure_de_Thulstrup_-_L._Prang_and_Co._-_Battle_of_Gettysburg_-_Restoration_by_Adam_Cuerden.jpg

Meade brought his troops to this place where they were to win or lose the fight. At noon all was in trim, and at the sign from Lee’s guns a fierce rain of shot and shell fell on both sides. For three hours this was kept up, and in the midst of it Lee sent forth a large force of his men to break through Meade’s ranks. Down the hill they went and through the vale, and up to the low stone wall, back of which stood the foe. But Lee’s brave men did not stop here. On they went, up close to the guns whose fire cut deep in their ranks, while Lee kept watch from the height they had left. The smoke lifts, and Lee sees the flag of the South wave in the midst of the strife. The sight cheers his heart. His men are on the hill from which they think they will soon drive the foe. A dense cloud of smoke veils the scene. When it next lifts the boys in gray are in flight down the slope where the grass is strewn thick with the slain. … Oh, that there were no such thing as war!

Is terrorist racially charged? I feel like for enough people terrorism indexes a certain race and culture and religion to a point that maybe we shouldn't use it.

I think the fact that we have to say “Domestic Terrorist” as code for “White Terrorist” means that this shit is inextricably linked to a racist-ass worldview, yes.

People who think Eminem is the best rapper of all time aren't necessarily racist, but are definitely wack. Everyone knows it's Marky Mark.

WHAT ABOUT MACKLEMORE

15 Apr 14:53

She lists Mein Kampf as one of her favorite books. Is there any chance she's not racist? Is that something you can, like, just enjoy for the writing or something? I have not read it so I would not really know.

Yeah, she’s, like, a Nazi, but only for the fiscal policies.

I sincerely regret not going from bar to bar on St. Patrick's Day and shouting at white people, "If you love IRELAND so much, WHY DON'T YOU GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM?!" Maybe next year.
