Making Hellboy’s Right Hand of Doom

by Amy Ratcliffe

Hellboy hand

Hellboy has a distinctive right hand. Actually, he stands out in a crowd regardless of his hand. Mike Iverson of Blind Squirrel Props is a fan of the character and spent eight days creating a wearable version of the hand from scrap medium-density fibreboard (MDF). He started by laminating “a bunch of 3/4″ MDF discs together to form the forearm, all hollowed out EXCEPT for the ends.” He used the same process for the hand and then lathed it to smooth and shape the stack of MDF circles into Hellboy’s fist. Here’s how he approached replicating the stone texture of Hellboy’s right hand:

As most of the pieces were nearing completion, I needed to figure out how to replicate the ancient stone texture of the hand. On scrap of MDF , I started with a bullet-shaped grinding stone bit to rough up the surface. Next I used a round grinding bit to add pits. Then I used a fine grinding stone bit to add cracks. The final step was to spray some red on it just to see how it looked!

Home Depot Brand Boat Costs $29.18

by Rich Bremer

hdboat

It is a common belief (or fact, depending who you talk to) that boats are money pits. Surely, it is a fun past time even for the lucky person flipping the bill, but what if you could build a boat from locally found and purchased items. [Bill] did just this and he did it for a mere $30. His creation is affectionately called Thunder Bucket.

The overall design is a pontoon-based sail boat. You’ll notice from the photo that the pontoons are made from many 5 gallon buckets attached together. The wood frame and deck come courtesy of old pallets that were taken apart. The mast is a fence post and a standard blue tarp rounds out the resourcefulness as it is used for the sail.

Admittedly, this may not be the coolest boat on the waterways but it is a boat, it’s made from non-boat-like items and it works. Believe it or not [Bill] is a professional boat builder. Sometimes ‘why not?’ is the best reason to do something.

Fossil Poaching and the Black Market in Dinosaur Bones

Fossil Poaching and the Black Market in Dinosaur Bones

Fossils are amazing, so of course you want to own one. Not so much. Owning a piece of geologic history seems awesome, but the fossil trade is ethically dubious and can substantially harm science. Selling fossils into private ownership means they're lost to research forever.

The Most Outrageous Fashions of Star Trek: TNG Seasons 4 Through 7

Star Trek: The Next Generation kept boldly going to some pretty amazing places, fashion-wise, after its first few wild seasons . We never again saw quite so many bonkers glued-on costumes, but there was still a lot of WTF. Here's our tribute to TNG seasons four through seven.

The Military Is Shutting Down Its Weather-Controlling Death Beam

The Military Is Shutting Down Its Weather-Controlling Death Beam

Can a facility that has inspired global conspiracy theories be designated a World Heritage Site? If so, that might be the only way to prevent the shutdown of the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) in Alaska, which studies the ionosphere—or creates lethal hurricanes—depending on whom you talk to.

Isaac Newton: Not fit to be printed

It is quite something to say about handwritten notes by Isaac Newton: “Not fit to be printed. 25 Sep 1727” (top pic, near lower edge). The verdict is from the scientist Thomas Pellet, who was asked to review Newton’s work after his death: he deemed only five of the eight-one papers from Newton’s estate suitable for printing. The texts you are looking at are part of a notebook - the so-called “Trinity College Notebook” - that was put together in 1661-1665, when Newton was an undergraduate at that same college. It already shows the inquisitiveness the brillant mind would be known for. Of particular interest on these pages are Newton’s reports on some experiments he is doing. The half page, for example, shows an eye ball accompanied by a text that starts with the words “When I press my eye on the left side (when I look towards my right hand)…” Curiosities of a young mind, not fit for the printing press. How great, and ironic too, that the notebook now bypasses any press and can be viewed - every letter of it - online.

Pic: Cambridge, Trinity College, MS Add. 3996 (view the complete notebook here). About Thomas Pellet and the events at Newton’s death, see (here).

by George Dvorsky

Physicists say that slowly collapsing wormholes could be used to send messages through time. Calculations show that the tube-like shape of wormholes could remain open long enough to be safely traversed by pulses of light, and thus allow for faster-than-light communication.

Thousands of Seattle Homes to End Up Literally Underwater

by Timothy Ellis (The Tim)

If you followed the news this week, you probably read that the Antarctic ice sheet is has entered an irreversible melting phase, that will eventually lead to its collapse into the ocean and an over ten feet increase in the sea level.

Here’s an excerpt from the Seattle Times article about the melting Antarctic ice sheet:

“A large sector of the West Antarctic ice sheet has gone into a state of irreversible retreat — it has passed the state of no return,” said Eric Rignot, with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

That move by itself could increase sea levels by about 4 feet, Rignot said. But it also will help set in motion other changes that could cause the ice sheet’s contribution to sea-level rise to triple to 12 feet or more.

I was curious how a 12-foot increase in sea level might affect homes around Seattle, so I pulled up the handy Surging Seas simulator by Climate Central. Their simulator only goes up to 10 feet but even at that level you can see that the increasing sea levels will have a dramatic effect on Seattle.

Here are a few highlights:

  • 8,257 homes in King, Snohomish, and Pierce Counties will be literally underwater
  • Most of the Snohomish River Valley and the Duwamish River Valley will become ocean.
  • Lake Union and Lake Washington would both become saltwater bays.
  • I-5 through Fife would be submerged (along with 30% of the city of Fife)

Although thousands of homes would end up in the Puget Sound in this scenario, that only represents about one percent of all homes in the Seattle area. Still, the overall effects on our area would most likely be quite large.

Thankfully, we’ve got a while to figure out how to handle it (the article estimates 200-1,000 years), but unfortunately, if the scientists are correct, there’s absolutely nothing we can do to stop it.

Bottom line: Buy a waterfront home in the Seattle area for yourself and your kids to enjoy, but don’t count on passing it down to your great-great grandkids.

[Update]
Apparently the visualization tool at Climate Central fails to properly account for the 20-22 foot differential between the Puget Sound and Lake Union / Lake Washington that is maintained by the Ballard Locks. Thanks to commenter Brad for pointing that out below!

Applying Fiberglass Resin to Pepakura

by Amy Ratcliffe

resin covered armor

Pepakura is basically papercraft. It’s a model usually made from thick paper such as card stock or foam. Printing pepakura files for helmets and armor is one way to start a build, but it takes a lot of work to transform the material into the finished product. RPF user Cereal Killl3r documented how he did it for his Master Chief cosplay, and it’s simply incredible to watch paper evolve to a smooth piece of armor. I’m floored.

As he continued the Halo 3 build, he started making how-to videos. The first one is about applying fiberglass resin to the pepakura to harden it, and the video is packed with information.

More about the process including a ton of progress photos are over at The RPF. This is one of the most well-documented builds I’ve ever seen.
