Wohnwagon tiny home can look after itself

by Stu Robarts

The Wohnwagon is built using natural and recycled materials

An Austrian company is building trailer homes that are designed not only to be compact, but with self-sufficiency in mind, too. Wohnwagon's trailers provide 25 sq m (269 sq ft) of living space and have their own off-grid electricity, water and waste systems. They can also be used as offices, guest rooms or cafes.

Scientists successfully crowdfund black rhino genome sequencing project

by Chris Wood

The project, which was hosted on the scientific crowdfunding platform Experiment, aims to sequence the genome of a black rhino named Ntombi

A team of scientists, led by the University of Washinton's Dr Chuck Murray, has successfully crowdfunded a project to sequence the genome of the black rhinoceros – a species that's been poached to near extinction. The effort is an important step in the conservation of the species, of which there are barely more than five thousand remaining.

Lego-compatible prosthetic arm lets kids' imaginations run wild

by Nick Lavars

After a fair bit of tinkering, Torres developed a functioning prototype of a prosthetic that lets kid use their imagination to build their own arm

For Colombian designer Carlos Torres, how to best tackle the low self-esteem and social isolation felt by child amputees is about more than finding the the most advanced prosthetic money can buy. His IKO Creative Prosthetic System is aimed at unleashing the creative expression of those with missing limbs, and to do so he's enlisting every child's favorite building blocks. The result is an artificial limb where kids can swap robotic grippers for laser-shooting spaceships whenever the opportunity arises.

Deep Visualization Toolbox

Open-source software developed by Jason Yosinski, Jeff Clune, Anh Nguyen, Thomas Fuchs, and Hod Lipson lets users see each layer a neural network produces when operating recognition of a subject:

Our paper describes a new, open source software tool that lets you probe DNNs by feeding them an image (or a live webcam feed) and watching the reaction of every neuron. You can also select individual neurons to view pre-rendered visualizations of what that neuron “wants to see most”. We’ve also included deconvolutional visualizations produced by Zeiler and Fergus (2014) that show which pixels in an image cause that neuron to activate. Finally, we include the image patches from the training set that maximally light up that image.

In short, we’ve gathered a few different methods that allow you to “triangulate” what feature a neuron has learned, which can help you better understand how DNNs work.

It’s a Plutopalooza!

by Iain

It really doesn’t feel like 9+ years since NASA launched the New Horizons probe on a mission to explore the dwarf planet Pluto and its system of moons. But now the craft’s closest approach is finally less than a week away, and NASA wants you to celebrate the occasion by throwing your very own Plutopalooza party! (Heads up: You’d better make the party last 16 months, because at 1kbps that’s how long the probe will take to transmit back all 64Gb of its data from the encounter)

Since several of my Brothers Bricks co-contributors are hopeless space junkies, I thought I’d mark the occasion by building the above LEGO model of the little probe …accompanied by targets Pluto and Charon naturally! A lot easier to do now that we finally know what color they are.

It’s an interesting milestone for me since my very first true MOC was of the Voyager 2 spacecraft, back in 1979 when it passed Jupiter. Armed with a clothes line, white bed sheet, length of string and basic film camera, I had no idea that the resulting images would be…. hopelessly out of focus! T_T

Tibetan Sword (Ral Gri)

  • Dated: 14th–16th century
  • Culture: Tibetan or Chinese
  • Medium: iron, steel, gold, silver
  • Measurements: overall length 34 7/8 inches (88.6 cm); blade length 29 ½ inches (74.9 cm); hilt length, 7 ¼ inches (18.3 cm)

This is one of the best examples from a small group of rare early swords from Tibet. The hilt of this sword, including its grip, is made entirely of iron that has been embossed, chiseled, and then damascened in gold and silver. The guard, just below the grip, is in the form of a stylized mask with teeth and fangs, representing a protective deity or guardian figure. Straight double-edged blades of this type are seen more often on Chinese swords, but they were also used in Tibet.

Deep Dream

Music video by Samim Winiger for Calista & The Crashroots employs the recent Google deepdream method, which makes it one of the first music videos to use artificial intellegence effects:

The recent release of deepdream has caused great excitement among machine learning researchers and artists alike. Deepdream is a image recognition neural network, turned upside down. It hallucinates images. I decided to take the system for a test run and explore. The following video is generated entirely with deepdream.

Keep in mind, this video was released just 10 days after the deepdream code was published online. It is an exploration of generative systems, not “Art” ;-)
