ESA uses cosmic lens to explore the secrets of a distant black hole

by Chris Wood

The new observations were only possible thanks to an effect known as gravitational lensing

ESA astronomers have turned the Fermi, Swift and Integral telescopes towards a distant supermassive black hole, using an opportune gravitational lens to make observations that would otherwise have been impossible. The findings represent the first time that gamma rays have been observed using a cosmic lens.

Water-Reacting Architectural Surface

Impressive project by Chao Chen, product design student at the Royal College of Arts, who has created a prototype for a building material (laminate) that shape shifts when it rains. It’s inspired by a similar mechanism found in pinecones.

The water-reacting surface is an architectural exterior material. Installed outside the building, it brings bright colour to residents in dim rainy days, especially in cities usually rains (London, Nanjing, Wuxi, etc.). On sunny days, the tiles of the surface are dry and lie flat. On rainy days, the tiles get wet and bend automatically, gently opening and showing the colour hidden beneath the surface to bring vitality to the space.

There’s a lot of potential in sensing, reacting and shape shifting materials out there. Hope to see more ambient and invisible technology like this one in the near future. You have to love the simplicity and elegance of the approach.

Puppy Slug Ball Games

Just when you think #deepdream has settled down, it got a lot more creepy. Put together by peteashton (and watch in HD):

Putting a video of my rabbits chasing a (banana-chip dosed) ball through the Inceptionism Deep Dream machine.

To Paint a Sparrow

by Caylin

This caught my eye, and I felt ya’ll needed to see. Anthony Pinder has shared with us this lovely little sparrow, inspired by LEGO Ideas 21301 Birds Model Kit. I think it’s an adorable build, but paired with the minifig painter and the sketch adds another level to the presentation.

Incremental Forming

Video from Robots in Architecture documents a workshop session exploring digital fabrication form using an industrial robot and sheets of plastic:

During this highly experimental workshop we explored the potential of incremental forming of plastic in an architectural context. Over a week-long workshop we went at the very limits of both material and machine, finetuning the fabrication strategies in the process. All final exhibits were designed by the participants themselves within Grasshopper and KUKA|prc. The relative high speed of the process allowed us to iterate very quickly, using parametric programming to quickly react on and improve on the result of the previous experiment.

Niagara be Dammed

In 1969 the US Army Corps of Engineers shut down the American section of Niagara Falls for maintenance. Parts of the rock had been breaking off, putting Niagara’s grandeur in jeopardy.

A 600 foot (180 m) temporary rock dam was erected to divert all water to the Canadian side of the falls, leaving the ordinarily enormous and awe-inspiring American Falls dry. For about six months tourists flocked to the falls to seize the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stroll along the sheer stone drop off.

In November 1969 the Corps of Engineers finished their erosion-prevention work and blew up the temporary dam, reinstating the misty, roaring American Falls majesty.

This animated GIF shows the 1969 dry falls in contrast to the typical flow. For reference, the distance from the ledge to the top of the rock pile ranges between 70 to 110 feet (21–34 m).
