True Color Of An Exoplanet Discovered For The First Time

by Francie Diep
Illustration of HD 189733b

Looks a bit like home!

Looks a bit like Earth, doesn't it? You wouldn't find this planet very comfortable, however. Called HD 189773b, it's 1,000 degrees Celsius on its surface and it rains glass. Sideways.

HD 189773b looks like Earth because it's blue. Astronomers have determined its true color, a first for an exoplanet, or a planet orbiting a star other than Earth's own sun.

Using data from the Hubble Space Telescope, a team of European and American astronomers measured the light reflection off of the exoplanet. The team had to isolate light reflecting off the planet from light from its star (the exoplanet orbits the star closely). The researchers used measurements from before, during and after the planet appears to go behind its star, in relation to Earth.

In general, HD 189773b has been well studied by Hubble and other telescopes because it's relatively close to Earth, 63 light-years away.

The blue color is thought to come from silicate particles in the planet's atmosphere, which scatter blue light. Because of the planet's surface temperature, the particles could condense to form glass. These glass grains would then fly around in the planet's 4,000 mph (7,000 kilometers per hour) wind. Ouch.

Toddler Accidentally Buys Vintage Car While Playing With Dad's Phone

Kids love to play with smartphones, but sometimes it's bad news to let them do so. They might start texting your ex-girlfriends, post nonsensical baby gibberish to your Facebook page, or buy you a random beat-up old British roadster on eBay.

Rumor: Steam Summer Sale starts tomorrow

by Ian Birnbaum

Psssst. Hey. Hey buddy. I got a sweet tip for you. Were you followed? Are you sure? OK, good. Now listen: Steam Summer Sale.

Yeah, you heard me. I got word from the Russians, you know how those guys are. Couldn’t keep a secret if the Kremlin depended on it.

Don’t look so surprised. We all knew it was coming, we just didn’t know when. Then one of my operatives, a guy by the name of vexos, left a dead drop under a bench in the park. In it, I found a picture with some hastily translated Russian code: The Steam Sale starts July 11.

Our analysts have noted that no new games are being released on Steam between now and July 23, which seems to be a nice window for a lot of deals, and Valve has been consistent: no new games come out during the sales. Looks like they’re keeping their people in check for the big event.

One of our new guys—you know, the one with the hair?—he spotted that the Midweek Madness deals are ending six hours earlier than usual, like they’re getting out of the way for something bigger. He’s got talent, that kid. Keep an eye on him.

We’ve all been preparing for this. I hope you’ve been stockpiling your supplies.

This message will self destruct by spending too much money tomorrow. Good luck, and godspeed.

Update: VG24/7 reports that their agent (Codename: Anthony) intercepted a communication from Valve itself, confirming that the Steam Sale begins tomorrow. This is not a drill, people.

Diogene: A Cabin Designed by Renzo Piano for Vitra

by Caroline Williamson

Diogene: A Cabin Designed by Renzo Piano for Vitra

Celebrated Italian architect Renzo Piano, of the Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) designed a tiny cabin on the Vitra Campus called Diogene. The architect has been obsessing over minimalist housing since he was a student and creating such spaces is a study in “self-moderation,” not a way to pinch pennies. So, the two by two by two meters (6’6″ x 6’6″) living space was born, which is just enough space for a bed, a chair, and a small table. This certainly fits the bill for our backyard offices trend.

Roughly ten years ago, Piano began hashing out his minimalist housing ideas and worked through various prototypes along the way. It wasn’t until 2009, when his final version “Diogene” was published, that Rolf Fehlbaum, chairmain of the Vitra AG, took notice. It took three years of development to create a new prototype, the one that sits on the hill between the VitraHaus and the Dome on the Vitra Campus. While it’s not a finished project, it’s an experimental arrangement to test the waters of its potential.

The structure is very much built as a retreat and one that could function in various climates. It supplies its own power with photovoltaic cells and solar modules, and the needed water is collected in a rainwater tank, and cleaned and reused.

The house is meant to provide you with what you need and nothing more, and that’s just what it does. The front space is the living room with a pullout sofa on one side and a folding table on the other underneath the window. Behind the partition is a shower and a toilet, along with a kitchen.

A mathematician and a physicist were asked the following question: Suppose you walked by a burning house and saw a hydrant and a hose not connected to the hydrant. What would you do?

P: I would attach the hose to the hydrant, turn on the water, and put out the fire.
M: I would attach the hose to the hydrant, turn on the water, and put out the fire.

Then they were asked this question: Suppose you walked by a house and saw a hose connected to a hydrant. What would you do?

P: I would keep walking, as there is no problem to solve.
M: I would disconnect the hose from the hydrant and set the house on fire, reducing the problem to a previously solved form.

San Fermin Festival – Running of the Bulls

by Jonco

The deeply religious festival of San Fermin, in honor of a 3rd-century Christian convert, and the famed Encierro, the running of the bulls, have been held in Pamplona, Spain, since the 1400s. The latter began as a non-religious fair centered on the arrival of cattle merchants in summer. Hurrying their livestock through the streets to market eventually evolved into a competition — now, what we know as running of the bulls.  More info

Colorado Recall Election Over Gun Laws Unprecedented

Colorado Recall Election Seeks To Replace Pro-Gun Control Politician

A Colorado recall election has been called against the state’s Democratic Colorado Senate President, John Morse.

This effort could result in an unprecedented situation if Morse is successfully removed from office. More than that though, the recall election could become ground zero for an ongoing debate across the nation regarding gun control.

The push to recall the Colorado Democrat comes from ire following new restrictions passed and recently enacted in the Southwestern state. According to LA Times, this includes a high-capacity magazine ban, universal background checks within the state, and an increase in gun fees.

Critics seeking to depose State Senator John Morse believe the new registration violates their constitutional rights. They argue that Morse and other gun control supporters in Colorado have acted against their democratic wishes.

Whether this is true or not will be proven when the Colorado recall election is most likely held in late August.

The Denver Post reports that Colorado Republicans will most likely choose former Colorado Springs City Councilman Bernie Herpin to run against Morse for the El Paso county seat.

John Morse, who may lose his position as Colorado State Senate President next month, says he does not regret what he did regardless of what happens. For him, the horrific Newtown massacre and the Aurora theater shootings, in his own state, forced him to consider his responsibility as a leader.

He asks whether it is responsible for someone in his position, after these incidents to say “’I'm really sorry that happened. I’m not going to do anything about it.’ I mean, if you’re not going to lead in those kinds of moments, why are you in this role?”

The Colorado state senator believes that the recall could have profound repercussions across the nation, having “a chilling effect.”

Morse says that, if the unprecedented Colorado recall election succeeds in replacing him, it sends the message that “if you can take out the Senate president … you can take out any legislator anywhere in the country.”

Mosaïcultures Internationales de Montréal is an international mosaiculture competition held in Montréal, Canada. According to their website, mosaiculture “is a refined horticultural art that involves creating and mounting living artworks made primarily from plants with colourful foliage (generally annuals, and occasionally perennials).” The 2013 competition and exhibition opened June 22 and runs through September 29 at the Montréal Botanical Garden and features some 22,000 plant species and cultivars distributed throughout 10 exhibition greenhouses and 30 themed gardens.
