Video: Turning soda cans into liquid metal looks so fun

I'm not going to give my aluminum cans to recycling centers anymore. Instead, I'm going to melt them down to liquid metal and create awesome metal objects with them. All I need is a hair dryer and some charcoal to create this awesome mini metal foundry. It turns about 40 cans into a pound of aluminum.

84-Year-Old Metalworker Creates a Fire Pit That Looks Like the Death Star II From ‘Star Wars’ for His Grandchildren

by Justin Page

Death Star Fire Pit

For Christmas this year, a skilled 84-year-old metalworker created a fire pit for his grandchildren that looks like the iconic, half-finished Death Star II battlestation from Star Wars. According to redditor Bandia5309, her grandfather created the sci-fi fire pit by welding together two defective propane tank ends and then cut out the all of distinct shapes found on the Death Star II. Bandia5309 has shared more photos on reddit and Imgur of her grandfather’s amazing custom fire pit.

Google to FCC: If you go with Title II, don’t forget our favorite part

by Joe Mullin

The FCC is currently getting public feedback about the possibility of regulating Internet service providers under Title II of the Communications Act. Cable companies are stridently opposed to such rules, but a relatively new competitor in the space, Google, sees an opportunity.

In Google's public comment, filed yesterday with the FCC, the company emphasizes that any such regulation must be careful to confer the benefits of such regulation along with the responsibilities.

The benefit most interesting to Google? Access to utility poles and other infrastructure.

The FBI May Have Made An Embarrassing Mistake While Investigating The Sony Hack

by James Cook

Wolf Blitzer CNN

A confidential bulletin sent by the FBI to companies across the US warning of further cyberattacks by the Sony hackers may have been based on fake posts and messages created by a prankster.

Earlier today we reported that the FBI sent a bulletin on Dec. 24 that warned companies of further threats made by the Guardians of Peace hacker gang. That's the group that targeted Sony Pictures, but the FBI warned that it was threatening a media organization as well.

A cached PasteBin post revealed the threat the FBI was referring to was targeting CNN, and even included a reference to anchor Wolf Blitzer.

Here's the post that the FBI was referring to in its bulletin:

By GOP
The result of investigation by CNN is so excellent that you might have seen what we were doing with your own eyes.
We congratulate you success.
CNN is the BEST in the world.

You will find the gift for CNN at the following address.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiRacdl02w4
Enjoy!

P.S. You have 24 hours to give us the Wolf.

But hours after the story published, a journalist who writes about cybersecurity stepped forward and claimed that he wrote the threat to CNN as a prank, copying another message that he found online and simply swapping some of the words.

Mediaite reports that David Garrett Jr., a writer for Homeland Security Examiner, took to Twitter and posted screenshots which appear to show that he was the author of the threat to CNN.

Here's one of the posts that Garrett offered up as proof that he was behind the message:

More proof. pic.twitter.com/ZYy4ujAFB1

— David Garrett Jr. (@DavidGarrettJr) December 31, 2014

It's important to note that there's no proof that the PasteBin post mentioning CNN was a prank. Neither Garrett nor the FBI has posted definitive evidence about the threat.

The FBI issued the following statement to Business Insider when asked about the Dec. 24 bulletin:

As part of our commitment to public safety, the FBI routinely shares information with the private sector and law enforcement community. We take all threats seriously and will continue to disseminate relevant information observed during the course of our investigations, in order to help protect the public against any potential threats.

But if Garrett is to be believed, then the FBI may have been fooled by a simple prank. If the FBI published a security bulletin based on anonymous and unauthenticated internet posts, that's going to make it more difficult for people to believe its other claims.

Along with the threat against CNN, the FBI also mentioned another PasteBin post that mocked the bureau's own investigation. If the prankster is to be believed, that second post could also be fake.

Some security experts have cast doubt on the FBI's claim that North Korea was behind the hack of Sony Pictures. If the FBI has been fooled by an online prankster, that could make its claim that North Korea ordered the hack more difficult to believe.

BitTorrent Zeitgeist: What People Search for in 2014

by Ernesto

2014During December, all self-respecting search engines produce an overview of the most popular search terms of the past year.

These lists give insight into recent trends, and in 2014 Robin Williams, World Cup and Ebola were the top trending searches on Google.

But what about torrent search engines? With billions of searches every year it’s worth taking a look at the most-entered keywords on the dominant file-sharing network.

A few years ago we started the BitTorrent zeitgeist tradition with help from one of the largest torrent sites around. Based on a sample of hundreds of millions of searches, this list should give a decent overview of what people are looking for.

2014’s number one query is the same as last year’s. YIFY is the name of a popular movie release group that many people follow to see what new pirated titles are available.

The term 2014, often used to find recent movies, comes in second place, followed by 1080p in third. Last year “1080p” was in 42nd place suggesting that people were increasingly looking for high definition video. The sixth and eight place for newcomers YIFY 720p and YIFY 1080p confirm this trend.

In fourth place we find NeZu, another popular movie release group that is listed in the top 50 for the first time this year.

The first content related search query is Guardians of The Galaxy in ninth place. Other popular movie searches are Lucy and Dawn of The Planet of The Apes taking the 23rd and 24th spots respectively.

TV content is also popular with Game of Thrones in 12th and The Walking Dead in 16th place. Perhaps surprisingly, there are no searches related to music titles in the top 50. The only music related term is Discography in 11th place.

Finally, a game release group made it into the top 50 this year. The query Nosteam, referring to the ^^nosTEAM^^ group, is one of the highest newcomers and is listed in 15th place.

Below is the full list of the 50 most-entered search queries on one of the most popular torrent sites on the Internet.
